Doug Peninger: SEPPA President ncdoug01@triadbiz.rr.com

Change, Change, Change I hope everyone is having a great summer, well, early summer. Time is marching forward and believe it not, we will all be looking at the holiday schedule soon! As we approach the busy summer schedule, the SEPPA Executive committee is planning its next meeting. At the end of July, we will searching for a new home to host our biennial convention. With 2015 in mind, we will be turning our eyes to Atlanta. Yes, we are returning to the metropoilis for what promises to be a bright future. With this move coming, 2013 will be our last event planned for Athens. While we have enjoyed the tremendsous hospitality and beautiful walking districts, the challenge of transportation and vendor needs has spoken very loud and clear. We hope you will join us in this change as we set into plan the continued success of our organization. We have all gleaned great education, friendships and lasting bonds from our great association. As we move into a new chapter, I hope you will be re-energized and ecxited.

The SEPPA Board of Governors, at the 2010 meeting in Franklin, TN, approved the all new SEPPA Degree Program. The Southeastern Photographic Fellowship is now a reality! You can earn your new SPF Degree in two categories. The orange ribbon is earned with a concentration in print credits, the purple ribbon with a concentration in service to the organzation. The requirements for both options are completed with education and/or service credits. You may also achieve both Degrees, signafied by a purple and orange ribbon. SEPPA will post the Credit Chart and submission forms at a later date. Be sure to check back. All events, beginning April 1, 2010 will be eligible to submit for credit.

The P Word Forgive me...I’m going to use the “p” word...and share with you that I’m passionate about education. I’ll be the first person to stand up and say that webinars, DVDs and road shows have their place in the educational lineup. But if you feel like there’s just something missing... consider a PPA Affiliate School. Did you know that there are over 20 PPA schools across the United States, Canada and the Bahamas? This month I’m going to talk about one that’s near and dear to my heart...the East Coast School Photographic Workshops. ECS offers a week of intense, in-depth education every summer. Our classes begin on Sunday afternoon (unless you’re doing a Super Sunday class)--and finish at mid-day on Thursday. I’ve been involved with ECS for more years than I have fingers--first as models chair and for the last 2 years as director. It’s a daunting task---developing a slate of instructors that will appeal to a wide range... (a year in advance, no less!) spending late hours brainstorming new events...matching class assistants to instructors...and working with our board to be sure we’ve crossed every “t” and dotted every “i” so that each student who attends ECS has a “wow” experience. (Just so you know--I’ve been working on our 2012 session since September of last year!)

We’re doing some new things this year--we’re still offering our Super Sunday classes--the fabulous Tony Corbell is doing a class on HDR processing with NIK software. We’ve partnered with Photobiz to offer our students a oneday class to learn everything you ever wanted to know about your website presence, SEO and tying it all together.

We’re starting off Sunday nite with our traditional barbecue dinner...and getting the week started with our cornhole and hula-hoop tournaments... (remember the “late hours brainstorming” I mentioned earlier?) Monday night is our new “PJs and Popcorn” event...be sure to pack your Grated jammies for this one...we’ll have beverages and prizes for the best evening “look”. Tuesday night is...well...frankly...a surprise. And Wednesday night is our Vendor Marketplace, this year bigger than ever. Victoria continues on page 22

Ah...our fabulous vendors. My summer just wouldn’t be complete without seeing Stu from Midwest...Harry from MorePhotos...Keith from Litho-Krome...Dean from Magnolia...Danny from Photobiz and of course we always have wonderful goodies to use in our classes from Wicker by Design, David Maheu and Larson. And then we have the lighting lab, four fully-stocked bays with every light modifier you can think of...and then some. Each bay has a coach...so if you’re learning a technique you want to “anchor” before you leave school, the lighting lab’s the place to be.

(As a reminder...the 2012 session of ECS is July 29 thru August 2...visit our website at http://www.eastcoastschool.com for course descriptions and online registration.)

We even have our own image competition...we offer prizes for several categories...and “Best of Show” wins a free tuition to ECS the following year. Did I mention food? Your tuition at ECS covers all your meals except one. If you’re counting, that’s breakfast, lunch AND dinner plus 2 snack times a day. (I’m a firm believer that one learns better on a full tummy. I know I do.) My years at ECS have given me the opportunity to study with some of the best instructors in the industry: Joseph and Louise Simone, Doug Box, Tony Corbell, Don and Nancy Emmerich, Greg Daniel, Tim Kelly-and every year I look forward to the end of July--ECS is the reward I give myself for a year of hard work-my “golden ticket” to learn something new. So consider spending your summer vacation with us at ECS--I guarantee you’ll make new friends, eat some great food, pick up a new photography trick or two...and you’ll be singing to yourself that nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina! (As a reminder...the 2012 session of ECS is July 29 thru August 2...visit our website at http://www.eastcoastschool.com for course descriptions and online registration.)
