HALLOWTHANKSMAS Once again, the great season of Hallowthanksmas is upon us. Of course, if you have been in any type of home decorating store, Christmas has been here since August. YIKES!!! I remember, as a child, we always celebrated each event (Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas) as a separate holiday. With great anticipation, my brothers and I would select out costumes so we could knock on the doors of complete strangers all for the sake of a piece of candy. Then, the feast of Thanksgiving would come. After being the in the Charlotte parade with my high school marching band, the family would gather for the feast. If you are like me, you had to come up with something you were thankful for. We have so much to be thankful for, really. Then, we would turn our eyes to Christmas. Putting up that tree was always a day of wonder and enchantment. All of the fragile ornaments, wrapped so delicately, were unveiled once again as they found their spot on the tree. All of the holiday television specials would be viewed once again. Admit it, you know you love the “Charlie Brown Christmas Special.” As we enter into this season, I wish each of you the very best. Don’t forget to make your hotel reservations for the 2013 convention. It will be here soon. On that topic, we will include different aspects of the convention from this point on. For the complete convention issue, please refer to the October 2012 Southern Exposure magazine.

See you in Athens,

Doug Peninger SEPPA President Editor

Professional Photographers of Georgia NE Area Seminar Intermediate Lightroom 4 with Stephen Jones, PPA Certified November 5, 2012 10:00am - 3:00pm Now that you have a basic understanding of how to use Lightroom, from our Beginning Lighroom class on Ocoter 22nd, we will turn our attention to squeezing the most out of this deceptively powerful digital photography software package. With each version release, Lightroom has gotten more and more featured packed, making trips to Photoshop less and less necessary. Adjustment brushes, gradient filters and camera profiles give you unprecedented control over the final appearances of your images, while never altering your original RAW files. While not required to attend, it is recommended class members bring a laptop loaded with Lightroom 4 to maximize their learning experience. About the Speaker Stephen Jones, CPP is a Certified Professional Photographer and a Director at Large with the GPPA. He has been studying photography for 25 years and holds a BFA in Photographic Design cum laude with General Honors from the University of Georgia. He has continued his photographic education by regularly attending classes and seminars such as The Georgia School of Professional Photography and others. Location: Dennis Echols Studio 1533 Dunlap Rd Winterville, GA 30683 (706) 338-0061 Download PDF Directions Due to limited space registration is required for all attendees. As a membership benefit, local area GPPA seminars are free to all GPPA members in good standing. We invite non-members to these local seminars for a nominal fee of $25 each. If you decide to join GPPA, the $25 fee will be deducted from your membership fee. Joining GPPA now will carry your membership through December 2013. Click here to register. Apps for Everyone & Everything As with many Apple products, the iPad was a hit from its introduction. Its first weekend just a little over 2 years ago saw long lines that eventually led to a short-term supply shortage. As of September 2012, sales numbers for the iPad are roughly in the 84 million range. Now that Apple has introduced the newest iteration of the family, the iPad 4, I thought it time to review with you my favorite apps and why my iPad is like my American Express: I never leave home without it.. My use of the iPad in my business life has completely changed the way I pursue some tasks. I can show samples of my work and book appointments, swipe a credit card, monitor an incoming flight or take a telephone call, all with one device and regardless of whether I’m in the studio, on location or picking up my morning tea from my favorite Starbucks. Now THAT’S what I call efficient!. Here’s a quick rundown of my “Big 3”: Line2: I completely did away with the landline in the studio over a year ago. I ported my studio telephone number to Line2 which uses VoIp technology to give me the flexibility of having the studio phone with me whenever I’m away on location. The good news? I dropped the cost of my studio phone service over 60%. Square: If you aren’t using the little white square reader for your credit card processing, maybe it’s time you gave it another look. There’s no monthly contract, no machine to keep in compliance and no tiered fees--just a flat fee for every credit card, even AmEX! (You should note that there is a slightly higher fee for cards keyed manually instead of swiped.) Square isn’t for everybody, though, so do your research before making the switch. Portfolio: I keep samples of my current work here...I can brand this app with my logo and show/hide galleries depending on who is viewing. If a bride is looking at my wedding samples she can even make notes on favorite images--I can email her the notes she’s made so we’re sure that none of the images she wants gets missed.

Here are the apps that round out my business arsenal: Dropbox: This app is one that I have on both my iPad and Mac. Any file that I need to access on the iPad I can drag into my Dropbox on my computer. In fact, when I finish this article, I’ll drop it into the “Southern Exposure” folder in my Dropbox for our editor to pick up. GoodReader: I stopped looking at PDF readers when I found Good Reader. More and more businesses are going green and choosing to distribute PDFs for reports and such instead of printing hard copies. The executive director for our state association sends PDFs for us to review before each board meeting. I load the documents into Good Reader via Dropbox and I have each close at hand for referral. SignNow: This is a recent addition for me: how many times have you needed to sign a document but didn’t have access to a printer or a FAX machine? I can import from Dropbox or email, sign the document with my signature that I’ve saved and email it to wherever it needs to go. Remote: I use Keynote on my Mac to prepare presentations for use when I’m speaking or teaching. Using Keynote Remote gives me the capability of accessing the presentation on my iPad to change screens without being tethered to the front of the room where the computer is cabled to the projector. PhotoSync: I use PhotoSync to transfer images from my computer to specific albums on my iPad. It works beautifully--and fast!

it’s FREE!)

Evernote: Definitely one of the best-kept secrets around--I have it on all my devices: iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro--knowing that whatever notes I make will be synced across all of them. I can include web clippings, documents, photos...and have as many notebooks as I need. (And the best part? Splashtop: This simple little app does one thing extremely well: it allows me to access my Macbook Pro remotely--if you’re using ProSelect to show images you might want to check this one out. Easy Release: As models coordinator for the SEPPA convention in 2011 I used this little gem to customize releases for each model-I could fill in the speaker’s name, model information and email a copy of the release to the model’s email address. FlightBoard: Many of our instructors arrive by plane for East Coast School. I can track each flight’s arrival and know when to cue the driver to head to the airport for the instructor pickup.

Snapseed: I absolutely LOVE playing with Snapseed! Those great little happy snaps I’m making with my iPad or iPhone get transformed into quaint art pieces with Snapseed. (I even have a gallery with my personal art in Portfolio.)

Protofo 1D Air Monolights Make for A Speedy Exit I want to share with you how technology helped me create a location portrait in a speedy fashion. While on location creating a bridal portrait at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond VA, Mary, business partner extraordinaire, booked me a headshot that would take place, just after my bridal, in the home next to the hotel on a Friday afternoon in which I only had a minimum amount of time to complete the task. I have really enjoyed working with the relatively new Profoto Air Monolights, so much so that I keep 4 strobes with stands and an umbrella packed and ready to go just for situations like this one. The beauty of these monolights is that you can control many of the features of these strobes from the camera position, I was able to adjust the power and modeling light of each light which allowed me to get in an out in an extremely short period of time. Here is what I did. First, I selected the camera angle, one that was more conducive to a wide angle length composition. This was to be just a head shot but when I walked into the old home, turned Junior League of Richmond Association headquarters, I knew that I wanted to showcase the magnificent interior details of the columns and rooms that opened up to the foyer area. (see overview) Once I had the composition selected, I adjusted the shutter speed to show detail in the windows and allow the wall sconce bulbs to be present in the final image. (see Ambient ) Next, I grabbed the only umbrella light modifier that was packed in my awesome Tamrac Super Rolling Studio Case. This one case holds all four monolights, stands, cords, tripod, grids and light modifiers and it’s on wheels so transportation is a breeze, even with all of this gear. I can’t imagine using any other case for location work; it’s simply the best! I feathered the main light umbrella toward the wall behind me so as to create a flattering light pattern on the face of the subject and bounce a little light off the wall acting as a fill light to lighten the shadow side of the face. One light acting as two and adjusted form the camera position with the Profoto Air Remote! Cool and fast! (see Main Light)

Next, I proceeded to add light into the room directly behind the columns by bouncing the light off of the ceiling, again adjusting the intensity of this light from the camera position. This created a soft large area of light that looked very natural to the room. (see Room Light) Then, I moved to the dining room area directly behind the subject’s head. I accomplished this by bouncing another strobe off the ceiling, aimed at the wall directly behind her head. I bounced this light to match the contrast and look of the light that I used in the other room. (see Dining Room) Finally, I added a 5 degree grid to the fourth light, to highlight her hair and separate her just a little from the background, giving her hair a little more pop and detail. (see Accent Light) I removed this light in Photoshop during post-processing because no matter which angle I positioned this light, I was visible in the mirror. Arghhhhhhh! I also straightened the edges of the image. Sometimes you have no choice! The beauty of this session is that I was able to set up, meter and adjust each light remotely and complete the entire job in under 30 minutes, in and out, without an assistant and still make happy hour!
