Let Our Dialogues Begin

I

My Tzedakah Fund M

t’s time to begin the first of several open forums – vision dialogues about our future. The topic of our first dialogue: Whatt h happens iin th the Sanctuary (while we’re waiting for the oneg to begin)? In 1997 Rabbi Janet Marder (now Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth Am in Los Altos Hills) wrote an article for Reform Judaism Magazine (Spring edition) titled, “Worship That Works.” In it she advocates for worship that is “joyous, dynamic, and spiritually alive.” The Ritual Committee and I want to explore how we, as a community, can develop meaningful and compelling celebration and prayer experiences for one another; how we can increase our engagement and joy during services. Whether or not you are an active participant in our Services and Celebrations we want to hear from you. Please join us for our first dialogue: Sunday, December 12 2-4 PM in the Social Hall In addition to anything that is on your mind, we’ll discuss topics as diverse as: ^ What’s working, what’s not ^ Our expectations, our fears ^ Prayer is not a spectator sport ^ How to use our sanctuary space ^ Stumbling blocks to meaningful, warm, compelling prayer experiences ^ Prayer that derives from the heart and speaks to the soul ^ Music & Singing ^ Prayer for the non-believer ^ Next steps

True or False: Tracy Bartlett is in charge of Onegs? The answer is: FALSE. Tracy’s job on Friday nights as our Shabbat Shamash is to unlock and lock the Temple and to turn on the lights on the memorial boards in the Sanctuary. Nothing more. If you wish

I

was very surprised by a phone conversation I had with a congregant a few months back. She was calling about making some donations to the T Temple and wanted to know why we didn’t have any kind k of fund to help congregants who had financial needs. I was surprised, because we do have such a fund: the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund. The congregant thought this fund was for tzedakah projects outside the Temple. I let her know—and I want to let you know—that the purpose of my Discretionary Fund is to help members of our congregation as well as to support outside causes which I deem worthy. My Fund is here to help pay rent, medical bills, veterinary bills, and to provide food gift cards. It’s here for scholarships to Jewish camps or trips to Israel for our youth. It’s here to help fund special projects at the Temple. I do make donations to organizations such as the Nevada Food Bank and other worthy causes in the area, but the fund is primarily here to help our Temple Sinai family. The word tzedakah means righteousness and justice. As Jews, we are obligated to help those in need. That’s why my Discretionary Fund was established. If you, or someone you know, needs some financial assistance please contact me. Rest assured, all conversations and disbursements from my Discretionary Fund are confidential. And for those of you who make donations to my fund—thank you for this mitzvah. L’shalom, Rabbi Appleby

to use her services, she needs to be paid for them. So, who is in charge of Onegs? US: each of us at the Temple. But without a volunteer to coordinate Onegs, we may find that some Friday nights we don’t even have bread and juice to say prayers over. We need a volunteer to coordinate our Onegs. Duties may include checking that people sign-up, purchasing the challah and juice (if supply is low),

providing a timely reminder for those who sponsor the Onegs and reviewing procedures with them, including set-up and clean-up. Consider serving as an over-all coordinator and finding four people to serve as “quarterly coordinators” and then everyone has only one-fourth the work! Please volunteer by calling or emailing Mike at the Temple office at temple.sinai@pyramid.net or 747-5508.

T

emple Sinai has been blessed with generous donations during our High Holy Day Capital Campaign Drive, enough to retire our building loan, but we also face challenges ahead. These are the two clouds; as we celebrate the passing of one, our loan, we must quickly turn to the next on-coming cloud, the need to maintain our membership dues pledges. Hopefully, with your help, this second cloud will pass as well. First, the good news… The sun is indeed shining thanks to the 63 families in our congregation who made generous donations to our Capital Fund during August and September. With the 50% matching contribution from an anonymous donor, we raised $70,069 over the two months, enough to retire the loan. There will even be capital funds remaining, we expect about $10,000. This is one big cloud of debt we will soon put behind

us. I want to thank all who don nated. If you still have an outstandiing pledge, please continue to ffulfill this pledge and contribute tto our Capital Fund so that we m may undertake future capital iimprovements. With regards to o our facilities, remember there are tw two funds: the Capital Fund, for major improvements and additions, and the Building Maintenance Fund, for the routine and periodic maintenance of existing grounds and facilities. Now, for the not-so-good news. As of the end of September, our membership dues income for the 2010-2011 fiscal year is only about 75% of what we expected based on responses our congregation made to the dues pledge drive earlier this year. This 25% deficit in our General Fund amounts to about $13,000. While this may not seem significant now, it is only the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year, and we depend on membership dues for most of our operating expenses, for paying our Rabbi and administrative assistant and for keeping “the lights on.” Remember that you may contribute to our General Fund

beyond your dues to help us cover our operating expenses and fight this current deficit in membership dues. I ask you please to ensure that you are current with your pledge commitment. Let’s not let the bright news of retiring the new-building loan blind us into complacency. Our ability to properly operate to the standards you expect is in jeopardy unless we maintain our membership pledge contributions. In order to encourage dues payments, the Board of Trustees is offering members a Fall Sale. Pay your pledged dues in full by the end of the calendar year, and you may deduct 5% from what you pledged. Here’s a chance to honor your membership pledge AND gain the full tax advantage of your dues pledge this year. Most importantly, be a part of Temple Sinai’s many activities and programs, attend services, sponsor an oneg after Friday services or help with planning activities. Volunteer. Temple Sinai is here for you, but all of us need to be there for it. Have a great Fall, and I’ll see you soon at Temple Sinai. Sincerely,

FROM SINAI’S BOARD PRESIDENT – JAKE MARGOLIS

i, My name is Jen Briggs and I grew up in a suburb in Chicago, Illinois called Glencoe. Fortunately, I was able to grow up with many Jewish kids and families. I attended Religious School and Hebrew school until I became a Bat Mitzvah at North Shore Congregation Israel. After my Bat Mitzvah, I continued to be involved in the temple youth group and was eventually confirmed with many of my friends. Eventually, I met my husband, Dave, and we had two amazing kiddos, Julia & Sam. We love the Sierras and spend as much time outside as possible. We have lived in Nevada about 10 years and are pretty much here to stay! I have a BS in psychology, a Masters in Outdoor Therapeutic Recreation, and a Masters in Social work (I am currently a LSW). However, I am now at home with my kids, relishing the opportunity, and good fortune, to be with them full-time.

his year Temple Sinai will once again open its heart and its doors to host homeless families during Christmas week. Family Promise is a nationwide non-denominational, philanthropic organization that houses homeless families in houses of worship throughout the year, provides them with food and a safe place to stay, and helps them find work and a place to live. Temple Sinai performs this mitzvah, this good deed, during Christmas week so the churches that host during the year don't need to do so during their holiday. In her sermon on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Appleby challenged us to try to become a more caring, compassionate, and dynamic community. What greater mitzvah can there be than helping our fellow men and women at the most desperate time of their lives? We need volunteers to host meals, stay with the families for a few

hours on Christmas day, bring food and non-food items, help clean out and then reset the classrooms, wash the linen at week's end, and stay overnight. We also appreciate cash donations (to buy gifts and items mid-week) if you can't give time. Please… consider what the Rabbi said to us and volunteer for Family Promise. Thank you. Lake Tahoe Community College Theatre Dept. presents

Kindertransport by Diane Samuels

Kindertransport was the name of a rescue effort which brought thousands of refugee Jewish children, under the age of 17, to Great Britain from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1939. Nine-year old Eva ends up in Manchester.

November 13, 18, 19, 20

~ 8:00 p.m.

A Commemoration of Kristallnacht will be held on opening night, November 13 at 8:00 p.m.

November 14 & 21

~ 2:00 p.m.

Tickets: $10 general admission $7 seniors $5 children under 13 $5 students with a current student body card

It was understood at the time that when the “crisis was over,” the children would return to their families. Parents could not accompany the children. Infants were tended by other children on the transport. The first Kindertransport arrived in Harwich, Great Britain, on December 2, 1938, bringing some 200 children from a Jewish orphanage in Berlin which had been destroyed during Kristallnacht. In all, the rescue operation brought about 10,000 children, some 7,500 of them Jewish, from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland to Great Britain. When Eva’s parents fail to escape Germany, the child changes her name and begins the process of denial of her roots. After the war, many children became citizens of Great Britain, or emigrated to Israel, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Most of these children would never again see their parents, who were murdered during the Holocaust. It is only when Eva’s own daughter discovers some old letters in the attic that Eva is forced to confront the truth about her past. Combining theatricalism and naturalism, past and present are intertwined throughout the play as themes of mother-daughter relationships, survivor guilt, and loss of identity are explored.
