Your Street THE OFFICIAL FUNDRAISING NEWSLETTER FOR TEMPLE STREET CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Help Us Put Children First.
Fundraising is part of Temple Street’s life saving team
WELCOME & THANK YOU
Luke Concannon, age 8. Dialysis is part of Luke’s life. He is part of ours.
It is only at the end of the year when you look back and take stock that you truly appreciate everything that we have achieved together for this wonderful hospital. In the past year we have taken on 6 marathons, cycled 6,000 kms and trekked through India – that’s a lot of mileage for one hospital! I know from personal experience how hard it is to train for a marathon having completed the Berlin Marathon for Temple Street in September. I know it´s not easy to find the time and energy to train and then fundraise on top of that. It can be gruelling. But somehow you draw strength and cross the finish line because you know you are doing something amazing. In the last 12 months you have supported our delicious Lindt chocolate bunny campaign, you have hosted spooktastic ‘Trick or Treat’ parties and you have baked up a storm and raised lots of ‘dough’ by taking part in the Great Irish Bake. Thanks to your wonderful support we have now been able to totally renovate our oldest and busiest ward, St Joseph´s Top Flat. This Ward will be back open in the next couple of weeks and I couldn’t wait until our next newsletter to share the pictures with you. On page 11 & 12 you will see what is possible with your funds – St Joseph’s has been completely transformed. Words cannot describe the difference these improvements will make to our little patients and their families. Our goal is very simple – to make sure the hospital is as extraordinary as the children that come through our doors. We need to ensure that we stay up to date with medical standards and we need to deliver world-class medical care. To do this we need to fundraise €15 million over the next three years. No mean feat I´m sure you´ll agree. But we are confident with your help we will achieve our goal. You will notice some pictures of our patients throughout this newsletter. They are some of the children who are benefiting greatly from your help and support. You have helped us put these children first. You have been more than generous with your time and your support and I hope that you will continue to support us in 2014. Our work is not done. We still need your help. Today´s children cannot wait on the promise of a new hospital. I want to sincerely thank you for everything that you have done to keep our hospital magical in 2013. We really couldn´t do it without you. Wishing you all a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

With your help THIS HAS BEEN possible Our main aim for 2013 was to redevelop one of our oldest and busiest wards and have it open in time for Christmas. We did it!
Pictured from top to bottom are images of St Joseph’s Top Flat, including one of the desperately needed isolation cubicles and en-suite, the fully refurbished corridor and one of our new multi bed wards.
St. Joseph’s Ward ‘Top Flat’ before it was renovated
St Joseph’s, affectionately known to many as Top Flat, is the ward where children with serious injuries are admitted through Accident and Emergency; the ward where children suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as Cystic Fibrosis often call home; and it’s the ward where children under-going surgical procedures are admitted while their anxious parents wait in the wings. However it is also a ward that until now had not been renovated since 1960. The physical environment did not match the level of care required to make our little patients better. 11
Bernie Priestly, mother to 14 year old Triona Priestly who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, a life limiting illness said,
“Temple Street staff are wonderful and the level of care is not questioned at all in our minds but children with Cystic Fibrosis need isolation units with en-suite facilities and at the minute that is non-existent in the hospital. It is an old building and children can’t wait around for the new children’s hospital to be opened.”
Until now, this ward consisted of 22 beds with just 3 bathrooms, cramped work stations and no isolation units for children who are desperately ill. Through your support of campaigns such as the Great Irish Bake and our Christmas and Spring Raffle, through the support of our Corporate Partners like DID Electrical and community groups like Frosses we have been able to raise the €2.5million that has made all of this possible.
YOU, our supporters, have allowed us to completely transform what was a cramped and outdated space into something extraordinary.
WHAT WE NOW HAVE - 1 Bathroom per room - 4 Isolation Units, each with their own en-suite - A Satellite Class Room for children who are missing out on school - A Treatment Room - A Consultation Room to discuss a child’s prognosis in private

Fundraising in the community A Phenomenal Community Fundraising Effort Eoin Burke, a little boy from Tubercurry, Sligo, spent a number of weeks in Temple Street’s Saint Gabriel’s Ward.
We would like to say a huge thank you to the Burke family and the community of Tubercurry and beyond for this wonderful community fundraising event. Before
Following Eoin’s stay in hospital, Martin & Jean, Eoin’s parents, decided they wanted to give something back and focused their efforts on raising a phenomenal €39,037.21.

Congratulations! From all of us in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital, we’re so happy for you and your achievement. Your determination and spirit inspired throughout the day, and brought a lot of joy to our hospital.
We are so lucky that we have the support of extraordinary people who take part in gruelling challenges like Dublin Marathon and who go the extra mile in aid of someone in need. You are a true champion for sick children.
Martin, a mechanic, spent many days, evenings and weekends over 9 months repairing an old Masey Ferguson, transforming it into a true beauty! The tractor was then raffled to hundreds of folk who bought raffle tickets from far and wide.

Before many of you took the Airtricity Dublin Marathon this October you spent months training and raising vital funds
for our hospital – we want to sincerely thank you for that effort and for raising over €50,000 for the hospital.
This year we were very fortunate to have 250 inspirational people cross the finish line for Temple Street on 28th October – our biggest team yet!
All funds raised will go towards essential needs such as highly specialised incubators for premature and seriously ill infants, high spec monitoring equipment and respiratory machines to help babies keep breathing.

Lots of parties to raise much needed funds for Temple Street This year with the help of Neil Delamere and lots of our little patients, we asked the country to ‘have a party and help sick kids’! And that is exactly what you did! The Trick or Treat for Temple Street campaign proudly supported by MiWadi is an important fundraising drive which asked all families, schools, crèches, workplaces, pubs, restaurants and individuals to sign up and host a Halloween party to help raise much needed funds for sick children.
With nearly 1000 parties across Ireland during the Halloween season it is hoped that this spooktastic campaign will raise lots of funds for the hospital. The money raised will go towards providing facilities such as satellite classrooms on wards where children cannot access the main hospital school. Thank you so much to our witches, ghosts and ghouls that got in the Halloween spirit and did something truly amazing for our hospital!

In BOD we trust
Brian O’Driscoll is truly an inspirational Ambassador and a great friend to everyone in Temple Street. For the past 10 years we have watched him from the sidelines, hoping and praying for the right result – as we do for every parent that passes through our doors. Brian has visited Temple Street many times, taking time out to chat to our little heroes and their families. Very often it’s the simple things that make all the difference; a comforting hand shake or a warm and friendly smile. His presence on the wards has lifted spirits, given our young patients hope, and left long and lasting memories.
€670,000 and donated the funds to Temple Street and to the ISPCC. Brian’s involvement and support of our hospital allows us to strive for the best and we are so lucky to have him at the helm of Team Temple Street!
He was instrumental in raising almost €2,000,000 to establish the National Neurosurgery Centre in our hospital and he has helped on a number of different fundraising drives over the years but he still continues to go that extra mile time and time again. Through his Testimonial Dinner in November, Brian raised over
