Heaven

scent What’s hot in high-end fragrance? We turned to scent expert Ainslie Walker to find out the bottles you should seek out for Valentine’s Day

- 33 -

Think famous brand perfumes are the height of luxury? Think again, as the lady (or man) in your life deserves a rarer vintage. We’re talking about small batch, ultra exclusive scents from fragrance houses that only those in-the-know are buying from. Read on to find out the best of the bunch. Designer brands have been extending the boundaries of luxury and exclusivity with higher positioned couture fragrance collections for some time now. Prada Exclusives launched in 2003, Dior Collection Privée, Armani Prive in 2004 and Chanel Exclusifs in 2007, now relaunched as parfums in 2016.The majority of designer brands have followed suit, jumping on the bandwagon of luxury, exclusive and niche. Tom Ford became one of the first fashion designers to create a niche-inspired fragrance collection, ‘Private Blend’, in 2007 bringing unusual ingredients to the mainstream. Before this, on a smaller scale, came ‘designer niche’ fragrances from Comme des Garcons (1994) and Helmut Lang (2000).

- 34 -

Pioneering niche brands including Santa Maria Novella (1612), Creed (1760), Diptyque (1961), L’Artisan (1976), Annick Goutal (1980), Serge Lutens (2000), Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle (2000), Maison Francis Kurkdjian (2009) and Le Labo (2006) were thrust into the spotlight and grew in popularity exponentially, catching and riding the ‘niche wave’ at varying stages of its advancement towards the mainstream fragrance market. These houses are, more often than not, now commonplace in major luxury department stores, airports and have multiple boutiques globally. Larger companies are procuring niche brands left right and centre – it’s believed niche and artisanal brands are capturing up to 15% of the annual market share in global fragrance sales. Estee Lauder has acquired Le Labo, By Kilian, and Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle. LVHM owns Acqua di Parma and Guerlain and Shiseido recently acquired the Serge Lutens trademark. The race to cash in on niche is on.

- 35 -

These brands have become highly accessible, no longer as exclusive and thus not strictly niche as they once were. No doubt you’ve smelt, seen or even own some niche or designer niche by now? And that’s the point - where do you go from here to ensure you smell as individual as you are? What’s next in the world of olfactory delights? What should you be in the know about? Where should you be looking? Don’t worry, there is much to find with a little investigation beyond ‘the norm’ and on to the road less travelled. The phenomenal rise in niche fragrance and high-end luxury offerings in recent decades, paved the way for the emergence of ‘haute parfumerie,’ an even more luxurious genre from smaller independent labels. Smart, enigmatic founders with creative, intelligent ideas are behind these brands, which are now the top of the game. Some of the world’s finest perfumers are employed and budgets are blown choosing the finest raw materials for their brews. Not only is the juice good, a small fortune can be spent on packaging designs, which look impressive on the dresser and feel gratifying in the hand. The resulting product may have a heftier price tag, however in this case, money can buy you love. Want to get the latest from the fragrance world? Check out Ainslie’s insights at the following sites. scentsmith.com.au and ainsliewalker.com

Five of the most exclusive fragrance houses and the scents that best represent them

- 38 -

Atelier des Ors

The craftsmanship on the faceted-glass bottle design and real 24-carat gold flakes within the bottles indicates your life might just be about to change forever. All six fragrances in the collection are seriously good. One may think initially the gold flakes are a little gauche, however after one spray you experience the full effect of the aroma and see the fine gold particles melting into your skin and you want more, just like the alchemists who inspired the brand. Ingredient focuses are rich and decadent, nodding to the exotics of the Middle East and include leather, spices, roses and amber.

Pick of the collection: Cuir Sacre

Mimicking that all-encompassing scent of a soft luxurious leather bag or car interior which has you yearning to crawl inside and stay there. One of the best unisex fragrances on the market.

New from the brand: Iris Fauve

Released February 2017, exclusive to Selfridges and just in time for Valentine’s Day, is a delicious, warm, soft and sensual skin-hugging blend of rich musks and iris accords. Owner of the brand Jean- Claude Philippe describes it as “a tender caress, draping the skin in a soft, powdered cocoon.” Divine. Available from Harrods in the Black Hall, Selfridges and online atelierdesors.com

- 39 -

Naomi Goodsir

Naomi Goodsir is a milliner, designer and creator of couture hats, bags, body accoutrements and parfums. Originally from Australia, she now resides near the perfume capital of Grasse in France. Working alongside some of the finest local raw material producers and renowned perfumers she created her collection of four opulent and decadent parfums. These are produced in small batches following the lineage of traditional, independent French perfume houses. “We simply are not able to produce them in big batches.” says Naomi of the very hands-on approach of the company. “Each pouch is hand stitched and the black tissue paper ‘insert’ is hand-pleated.”

Pick of the collection: Iris Cendre

A magical unisex, iris centred composition. Iris fragrances are usually powdery and aimed at women – think Chanel’s No 19 – however here we experience an interesting statement fragrance suitable for men and women alike. Within Iris Cendré, an ashy iris is presented which had the entire perfume world to attention on its release and was quickly nominated for a Fragrance Foundation Award. The fragrance has fresh citrus and floral aspects, rich smoky incense and violet and iris in its heart. Cistus, tobacco and amber add a sensual hint of leather – for serious fragrance connoisseurs. Available in the UK from anatomie.london and epitomeofedinburgh.com

- 40 -

Arquiste

A superb and thoroughly considered brand, founded in New York, which encapsulates historic moments and places in time. Creative director and founder Carlos Huber was originally an architect specialising in historic preservation, and also worked for Polo Ralph Lauren creating interiors. Of the moment perfumers Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Yann Vasnier were handpicked to create the collection. There is something in this collection for everyone. Fragrances are immediately desirable and yet take you on a journey further than you’d first expect. As Carlos says: “They transport us to another place in time.”

Pick of the collection: Boutonniere 7

An award-winning gardenia based scent inspired by the foyer of the Opéra-Comique, Paris in May 1899, where men cleverly wore gardenias on their lapels to attract women. By no means girlie, this unisex fragrance is rounded with a green freshness and woody base.

New from the Brand: Ella

Part of a his (El) and hers duo released late 2016 and a perfect gift this Valentine’s Day. Inspired by sexy, flirty decadent days and nights of Acapulco in the 1970s. The scents capture a chic ‘from the beach/poolside to the dance floor’ vibe. Ella is bold and beautiful, naughty and nice, purring gently with animalic notes and smoke whilst the focus is all about rose, jasmine, cannonball flower, champagne and honey. Available from: Bloom Spitalfields and Convent Garden, Fortnum and Masons, Fenwick’s, By Appointment Only Design and www.arquiste.com

- 41 -

Lalique

This fragrance is placed under the sign of infinity, a symbol in the shape of an “eight” which was already hinted at by the Art Nouveau scrolls of René Lalique’s jewels. Now this symbol of the eternal feminine is translated into a scent. A celebration of sensuality, it’s been crafted to honour the strength and beauty of women and the perfumer behind it, Richard Ibanez, selected a refined palette of delicate natural ingredients to achieve this. Notes of pure bergamot light up the flesh of rose-scented lychee combining with freesia, which blends the nectar of fruit with the heady

tones of jasmine. All this combines to offer the floral heart of Rêve d’Infini. From the elegant rose overtone they’ve cleverly softened it with a peach and strong cedar wood. Together with a silky dry-down of vanilla, musks and sandalwood, this scent has a subtle yet impactful nose. The Art Deco-inspired jewel bottle of Rêve d’Infini is a true ode to female beauty – its curves adorned with a satin finish create a product that scores high on the desirability scale. Available from Harrods, Selfridges and London’s Lalique boutique, lalique.com

- 42 -

Ormonde Jayne

This was created from the fragrant childhood dreams of Londoner Linda Pilkington. The fragrances are handmade in a studio in London’s Regent’s Park and the flagship store is in the Royal Arcade. The collection is large and beautiful enough to capture most hearts, with each fragrance focusing on rare and exclusive ingredients. Linda was utilising rare and exotic raw materials years before Tom Ford put them firmly into the mainstream.

Pick of the Collection: Ormonde Woman

Featuring a mesmerising and bewitching heart of black hemlock, jasmine and violet with fresh top notes of coriander and cardamon. All set on a seductive woody base of vetiver, cedar wood, amber and sandalwood. The chypre genre of fragrances was a trend in 2016 yet ever the trendsetters, this fragrance was actually released in 2002.

New from the brand: Ambre Royal

Exclusive to Harrods from March 2017 and worldwide from September, this features an accord of rose, osmanthus, orris butter, orchid and jasmine spiked against orange blossom and bergamot. Depth comes from patchouli, cedarwood and hypnotic amber molecule. Spellbinding. Available in Selfridges London, Harrods and the flagship store in The Royal Arcade ormondejayne.com

A Russian romance By Peter Jenkinson

The Faberge brand is synonymous with sophisticated watches and jewellery and, of course, its famous eggs. But it began with a story of passion, secrets and incredible wealth

The artisan at work: Peter Carl FabergĂŠ

T

he success of Fabergé, arguably one of the world’s most iconic artist-jewellery brands, began as a simple - if lavish - love story. Tzar Alexander III decided to create a bespoke jewelled egg for his wife, Empress Maria Fedorovna, in 1885 to celebrate Easter – and their 20th anniversary. Maria had often told her husband how, as a child, she had fallen in love with a jewelled egg owned by her Danish aunt. In secret the Tzar commissioned Peter Carl Fabergé to create the romantic gift – and the first Imperial Easter egg was born. Easter was the most important occasion of the year in the Russian Orthodox Church and

a tradition of bringing hand-coloured eggs to church to be blessed and then presented to friends and family, had evolved through the years. Among the highest echelons of St Petersburg society, the custom developed of presenting valuable jewelled Easter gifts. Yet this first Imperial egg was by far the most exquisite. Known as the Hen Egg, it was crafted from gold, its opaque white enameled ‘shell’ opening to reveal its first surprise, a matt yellow gold yolk. This in turn opened to reveal a multi-coloured gold hen that also opened to reveal a minute diamond replica of the Imperial Crown from which a small ruby pendant egg was suspended.

The Empress’s delight at this intriguing gift with its hidden jewelled surprises was the starting point for the yearly Imperial tradition that continued for 32 years until 1917 and produced the most opulent and captivating Easter gifts the world has ever seen. The eggs were private and personal gifts, and the whole spectacular series charted the romantic and tragic story leading up to the end of the mighty Romanovs. Each egg, an artistic tour de force, took a year or more to make, involving a team of highly skilled craftsmen, who worked in the greatest secrecy. FabergÊ was given complete freedom in the design and execution, with the only prerequisite being that there had to be surprise within each creation.

Dreaming up each complex concept, FabergÊ often drew on family ties, events in Imperial Court life, or the milestones and achievements of the Romanov dynasty. The Fifteenth Anniversary Egg of 1911 commemorated the fifteenth anniversary of Nicholas II’s accession to the throne and the Romanov Tercentenary Egg of 1913 celebrated 300 years of the House of Romanov, showing portrait miniatures of the Russian dynastic rulers. Of the 50 eggs made for the Imperial family from 1885 through to 1916, 43 have survived and are exhibited in museums and privately all around the world. The Queen owns three Imperial Eggs as part of the Royal Collection. One is the Mosaic egg, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II for Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, for Easter 1914.

Inside the diamond and ruby-encrusted egg, is a miniature medallion painted on ivory with the portraits of the five children of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. It was purchased by King George V for ÂŁ250.

The Fabergé name lives on as one of the world’s most revered jewellery and timepiece brands. Current collections – often inspired by the past – are available at Fabergé boutiques in New York and London, as well as at Harrods. And still men and women buy their creations – as a token of love.

The aesthetic of the Fabergé Visionnaire DTZ is bold and contemporary but also reflects the renowned grandeur of Faberge’s historic legacy. Fabergé has taken the masculine design of 2015's Fabergé Visionnaire I flying tourbillon and expanded it with dual timezones. The self-winding DTZ adopts a logical and intuitive method of displaying two timezones simultaneously and employs a slim bezel, complex lug construction, multi-layered dial construction, fluted crown and a linear, decorative motif radiating from the centre of the dial. Two versions of the Fabergé Visionnaire DTZ – one in titanium and 18 karat rose gold and the other in black DLC-treated titanium and 18 karat white gold – are offered by Fabergé. Both are presented on an alligator strap with matching gold and titanium folding clasp. Price from £23,500

The Lady Compliquée Haute Horlogerie ladies’ collection upholds Peter Carl Fabergé’s tradition of surprise and meticulous execution with a time display exclusively developed for Fabergé by Agenhor Manufacture, which won the prestigious 2015 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) – the Swiss watchmaking industry’s highest honour – in the ‘HighMechanical’ category. The display of the collection features a fan at the heart of the watch. The display in the Lady Compliquée Winter timepiece pays homage to the famous “Winter Egg” of 1913; the Lady Compliquée Peacock pays homage to the famous “Peacock Egg” of 1908 and offers four colour variations and feature emeralds, rubies, sapphire and diamonds. The land of smiles

Thailand has got its glam on and is shaking off its backpacker image with a host of new luxe hotels and high end villas. Scott Manson selects some of the best for those seeking to take their partner on a romantic trip for some winter sun in a tropical paradise

I

t’s a cliché but, like most clichés, it’s a cliche because it’s true. Thailand is a country of contrasts. From the buzz of Bangkok to hammock days by its beaches to the unmistakeable smell and slow lurch of an elephant ride taken in the Golden Triangle, this is a beautiful and bewitching country that rewards return visitors time and again. Little wonder, then, that it’s become the gateway to south east Asia for many travellers, with the westernised feel of places such as Bangkok or Pattaya providing a comfortable introduction for those new to the region. The more intrepid traveller, though, should push on a little further, to the venerable walled city of Chiang Mai in the north, or the resort town of Hua Hin, where the Thai royal family like to spend their weekends. Elsewhere, nature lovers revel in the forests of the Koh Samui or the snorkel through the crystal waters off Phuket. And, if you look very carefully when you’re taking one of those jungle treks, you might even spot that rarest of sights – an original 70s hippie travelling to one of the area’s spiritual retreats. The marine paradise that runs around the Andaman Sea coastline is also worthy of your attention, from the sheer limestone cliffs and outrageously good dive spots of Phang Nga to the emerald sea surrounding the twin islands of Koh Phi Phi. What follows are three truly romantic spots that offer a more relaxed, unspoilt take on the ‘land of smiles’– a sensory whirlwind awaits you…

Four Seasons, Koh Samui Thailand is blessed with several Four Seasons outposts, and Tempus has been lucky to stay in several of them – from the far-flung ‘tented camp’ in the Golden Triangle to their property surrounded by lush gardens in Chiang Mai and, of course, the beautiful city bolthole that is Four Seasons Bangkok. From the moment you arrive at Four Seasons Koh Samui, to the sound of a giant crashing gong no less, you know you’re in for something special. The view from the small check-in area is an astounding start to your stay. Perched high on the edge of a cliff, the hillside terrace looks out across the jungle and down to the resort below – a jewelled constellation of discreet pool villas nestling among the palm trees. The villas are smartly designed, subtle but with a sense of understated opulence. Equipped with a pool big enough for a few laps, a day bed and, crucially, a well-stocked wine fridge. Indoors, the bathroom and changing rooms are

spacious, and the glass doors next to the bath open up completely to allow you access to your pool or to gaze out at the stars whilst bathing. Top tip – get the staff to fill it with petals and to run you a bath before dinner – it’s a heavenly way to start the evening. In terms of dining, there’s KOH Thai Kitchen & Bar for Thai à la carte, with magnificent views of the resort, great service and delicious cocktails. Try the whole spicy sea bass and fresh mango sorbet. Beach-side there’s Pla Pla (meaning ‘many fish’) for casual Mediterranean lunches, and the Beach Bar for lazy cocktails and snacks. If you’re wondering – the most Instagram-friendly libation is the pineapple cooler which, of course, is served in a huge hollowed-out pineapple. Oh, and another essential Instagram opportunity can be found near the water’s edge, where a string of iconic hammocks are sat neatly within the ocean. phone do not work well with a swaying net. I speak from experience. It’s not all sybaritic lounging though. By far the most fun experience I had was a two hour Muay Thai (Thai boxing) lesson with the resort’s resident instructor. An English chap, he’d originally come to Thailand to learn Muay Thai from the masters and, several fights and championship belts later, he was in the hotel’s purpose built ring with me. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t look too worried. This lesson proved to be the perfect end to a perfect trip. As we sparred at sun-up, with dawn breaking over our cliffside boxing ring and the rich smell of the jungle’s flowers and plants all around me, I felt as if I had truly got in touch with the country’s culture – albeit through a very glamorous lens. And that, surely, is what we’re all looking for when we check into a top international hotel. fourseasons.com/kohsamui

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and accessible via a well-maintained road that snakes through the surrounding jungle, this villa is both handsome and beautifully appointed. Energetic types can learn the martial art of Muay Thai – courtesy of a champion fighter – in the villa’s Thai boxing ring or take a swim in one of two infinity pools. A tennis court and

sizeable gym will also help address any holiday weight gain, made trickier by the gastronomic feasts served up by a personal chef – one of 20 full time staff. served here, from the exceptional Pacifica restaurant and the split-level terraced Kinnaree Bar to Asian specialities at Orient Asia and the sumptuous Brazilian churrasco El Gaucho. My personal recommendation would be to indulge in the tasting plates offered by Orient Asia – this way you can experience various Thai dishes, including a unique dessert of flavoured water chestnuts in coconut milk. Quiet luxury – or stealth wealth – is the name of the game here. Relax and enjoy. movenpick.com

Muay Thai

Thai boxing is to Thailand what football is to Britain – a widely followed national sport – and is regarded as the most practical stand up martial art in the world. It uses not just kicks and punches but also knees and elbows as striking weapons together with the standing grappling of the clinch, to create devastating battles. No visit to Thailand is complete without a visit to a local fight night at a Thai Boxing stadium. On entering the buzz and noise fill the air, drawing you in to the stand, with cheering, shouting, gasping and screaming all compete with the sound of Thai classical instruments playing in the background. It’s a truly authentic night out and one that’s perfectly sums up the curious paradoxes of the country. Like the mix of sweet and sour that is their culinary hallmark, Thais combine the calmness and serenity of Buddhism with a passion for one of the world’s most ferocious fighting forms.

Jai yen (keep a cool heart)

Jai yen is a Thai saying which literally translates to “cool heart” (jai meaning heart or feelings, and yen meaning peaceful). The term means to approach any situation pleasantly and in a non-confrontational manner. Thai culture regards keeping calm and composed as an admirable quality, perhaps informed by the fact that 95% of people in Thailand are Buddhist. So keep that in mind if your waiter is slow or a taxi driver seems to be taking an unusually long route. While demonstrating anger can be interpreted as a sign of strength or power in Western culture,Thai people see it as the sign of a weaker, less honourable person.

Blakes, Kensington

I

’ve enjoyed more romantic-hotel breaks than most. Not because my profession is the world’s oldest or due to developing a penchant for married men, but because it’s my job to review sexy stylish bolt holes. No really, that’s my job. (Easier for me to explain at border control than my friend’s job which is social media for a juice brand. That passport guy in Marrakech could not grasp her getting a salary for creating Facebook posts using funny fruit pics.) Career hotel reviewer: tough gig, but someone’s got to test those bed linens and minibars, so you don’t get duds for precious weekends away. What do you mean you still use TripAdvisor? Would you go to the supermarket and canvas bargain-browsing strangers on where to have your honeymoon, then book from that? Since you probably have a job that involves allocating less of your professional time to lying in bed, I’m going to share my hardearned intelligence on where best to be supine. You’re welcome. First off – don’t be fooled by a hotel’s website. Top tip: go to the

gallery and eyeball the bedrooms to test an address’s sex appeal. Even the most illustrious luxury hotels wow with grand marble lobbies with dazzling chandeliers, then let you down. Sweeping staircase hero shot on the homepage? It may not lead to aphrodisiacal accommodation, but a beige box built for business time. And I don’t mean that kind of business time. A multi-pin plug socket, Bloomberg in widescreen and a trouser press are all very well, but they won’t light your fire during time away as a twosome no matter how much champagne they have on ice. For an amorous ambience, more-is-more interiors work wonders. For the full fantasy, you can’t go wrong with a luxe canalside palazzo amid centuries-old balconied townhouses and domed Baroque churches. Remember how the world swooned as George and Amal Clooney stepped out of Aman Venice? Exactly. Blakes in Kensington is no slouch in the style stakes either; this decadent den is redolent of a Golden Age of travel. The lavish décor whispers sweet

nothings in seductive Arabian and Asian accents and four-poster beds are layered with the finest linens. Sumptuous fabrics don’t always signal glamour, though. I’m remembering an awkward bathroom situation. A first-ever weekend away to Brighton was going to plan till I realised all that separated the bed from the loo was a velvet drape. The fact I’d drunk a 2L bottle of water on the car journey there quickly felt distinctly unglamorous. The suite also had a freestanding tub as its centrepiece. Claw-footed and cute, sure, but unless you’re a supermodel, you may prefer to preserve a little mystery when it comes to ablutions in the early days. Then there are the design hotels that surprise you with glass walls. Voyeurism is appealing in the right context – the floorto-ceiling windows of The Standard, High Line provide a mighty lookout over NYC’s world-famous skyline as well as give insight into what you get up to for walkers on Manhattan’s west side. Baccarat; the size of hammams, there are at least shutters so you can choose whether to put on that show from the shower. Outdoor bathtubs are a different matter – alfresco in the tropics is always a winner. For the ultimate in open-air escapades, the spine-tingling suites at Jade Mountain in St Lucia expose you to the elements. Its canny architect-owner dispensed with walls on one side; the Piton-facing spaces set into the hillside boast private pools on the terrace and there’s only a railing between you, your sanctuary and the fresh Caribbean Sea air. Hotels with heart-stirring views can mean memories-to-last-a-lifetime. For butterflies-in-stomach paradise landscapes, make for the Maldives. Nine out of ten marriage guidance counsellors would surely recommend snorkelling at Baros. Just be sure to choose an Indian Ocean resort which

keeps you both happy – desert-island ennui can test a relationship rather than enhance it. History and culture float your boat? Hotel Grand Bretagne in Athens promises a rooftop vista which is a postcard come alive. Tick off the Acropolis, the Parthenon and the Temple of Olympian Zeus from your sightseeing list as you enjoy breakfast. For dramatic Greek-island panoramas guaranteed to inspire declarations of love, hop over to Santorini and get thee in a private plunge pool at Canaves Oia. This honeymoon-worthy Aegean escape lays on star-scattered skies and private dining away from prying eyes. Best enjoyed with a glass of the island’s excellent mineral-rich wine – but don’t blame us for spontaneous proposals – that caldera lookout is powerful stuff. Provence is another destination generous with its vineyards and views. Journey to

Crillon le Brave and this medieval village north of Avignon has terraces aplenty from which to toast coupledom over a Côte du Rhone. Hilltop hideaways in the South of France are especially appealing for cyclists – just leave the Lycra at home. Skin-tight polyurethane is a hard look to pull off at the best of times, let alone when you’re with a lover. The real trick to romantic diversion? To unplug and switch off. Can’t get to that offthe-grid eco-resort in Costa Rica? Inventive cocktails also do the trick. The Experimental Cocktail Club has an intoxicating city B&B formula – their boutique ‘bed and beverage’ hotels include the intimate Grand Pigalle Hotel in Paris and the new Henrietta Hotel in Covent Garden. Bottoms up. You may not be able to put a price on love – but you can splash out on a stylish escape.

By Conor McNicholas

F

Few can fault the original E-type – way ahead of its time in many respects. It’s hardly surprising, then, that when one E-Type owner took theirs for a modern day upgrade a new chapter in this classic car’s history would begin. Eagle started off in 1984 as a traditional restoration business, buying, restoring and selling original E-Types to customers. Engineer Paul Brace joined the shop in 1989 and helped Eagles founder Henry Pearman transition it into an outfit creating high-calibre “restomods”. Engineer Paul

Brace joined the shop in 1989 and helped Eagles founder Henry Pearman transition it into an outfit creating high-calibre “restomods”. The kickstart to the story that leads us toward this newly launched GT model started when in 1991, best-selling thriller author John McLaren came to Eagle. He wanted to keep the exhilarating experience his original E-type offered yet achieve heightened performance and reliability – Eagle E-types were born. Twenty years after launching their successful Eagle E-Type restomod series, the Sussex outfit

wanted to further ensure the E-type legend lived on and created the E-Type Speedster. A couple of years later Eagle followed up with a hard-top grand tourer, the Low Drag GT. And now the Spyder GT completes their impressive trilogy. The often savage circle of motoring critics have been roundly and repeatedly uttering words starting at gorgeous and moving through beauty and into jaw-dropping. It is as if they’ve all taken a collective intoxicant. Or perhaps not, we didn’t have any and are totally smitten. And so to the specifications. It is more than a pretty face ( a very pretty one at that) and for its near £700k price-tag you’d expect quite a bit under the hood. We have 330bhp on offer thanks to a custom-built, 4.7-litre straight six engine with power enough to propel the Spyder GT from 0-60mph in under five seconds, and on to a top speed of over 170mph. And that, in a roof down ride is most certainly going to blow those cobwebs away and score high on the thrill factor. Each ride begins life as an original E-Type ready for the long process toward GT glory. Each and every element is bespoke, from the aluminium gearbox to the engine block. The vehicle’s entire monocoque structure is also made up of the lightweight metal with deeper sills, a lower floor pan and wider wheel arches with custom 16” wheels and tyres On the inside the hand crafted interior features sumptuous leather and a delicious sweeping centre console – the attention to detail is an absolute joy. This car isn’t just establishing new levels in automotive excellence, it is redefining driving. From £695,000 eaglegb.com

Drophead

GORGEOUS The Rolls-Royce Dawn deserves its place in the sun – but a break in the clouds will do just fine

T

he mistake you can make with a soft top is to only see it as a car for the summer. Certainly the Dawn comes into its own when the temperatures rise, but when the mechanics under the hood are this good then even with the roof up, it’s the drive of your life. Very much at home cruising the boulevards of balmy Palm Beach-type resorts, this stunning saloon is equally as head-turning eating up the asphalt of any city street. Car pundits have accused it of looking like the Wraith with its top chopped off yet in

actual fact 80 per cent of its body parts are unique to the Dawn. It also doesn’t opt for fancy techy tricks. Forget on-board WiFi or Apple CarPlay compatibility, this ride is somewhat old-school in this respect and that’s no bad thing. But back to its looks. With the top down, the Dawn has a spectacular shape and offers a sail-like silhouette from the six-layer cloth top. It boasts, confidently, a twin-turbo 6.6litre V-12 engine which allows a decent 563 horsepower. Top end, it can reach 155 mph and get from

- 90 -

standing to 60 in under five seconds. Add the wind-in-your-hair-factor and it feels even more fun. The entire interior is utterly exquisite and there’s plenty of room inside for four full-sized passengers (in fact, they can all recline to quite a degree without imposing on one another). As you’d expect from Rolls-Royce there are a multitude of interior and exterior options. There are also further opportunities for bespoke and personalised specifications to allow you to add your own stamp of elegance. Charisma, however, comes fitted as standard.

Simplicity is golden CEO and Founder of Acumen Design, Ian Dryburgh, discusses the ingredients that make up an iconic superyacht design

- 95 -

T

he best piece of advice you can give designers looking to create a truly timeless exterior, is that less is always more. The more you over-style a design the quicker it will date. For makers of high-end luxury yachts, this will have a detrimental effect on resale price and onward appeal. If you frame a painting in a cluttered room it will not shine. If you remove the visual clutter, people are more likely to appreciate what is there. The same principle applies to not only superyachts, but all forms of premium transport design. The best yacht designs resonate with people on an emotional, functional and aesthetic level.

- 96 -

It is the combination of these core objectives with creative and original thought that enables designers to produce true market differentiation and create an appreciation for the product that endures over time. A design has to find the unique balance between conceptual luxury and real-word functionality. At times this can be a fine line to walk, especially as all new designs need to comply with strict regulatory requirements; but designs that can make this work have the potential to truly revolutionise the industry. Acumen is famous for challenging the paradigm to create truly original and disruptive

design solutions which have achieved market leadership across a number of industries. By adopting an empirical approach and by exploring the multi-functional use of space, Acumen has created iconic award-winning designs for the likes of Sunseeker International, Lewmar and Brookes and Gatehouse. Acumen’s specialist expertise in creating premium interiors – such as the invention of British Airways’First ‘Bed in the Sky’ – has helped set the benchmark for luxury airline travel. Most recently, Acumen’s design work on Etihad’s VIP ‘Residence’(which includes a personal butler) has redefined luxury within the confines of a commercial aircraft interior.

- 97 -

The same rigorous approach to space utilisation applies to the challenges of superyacht interiors. In a similar vein to the way in which the aviation interiors industry has evolved in recent years, the yachting world can benefit from an injection of fresh ideas at a fundamental level. Premium aircraft passengers are incredibly discerning, so interior designers have had to transform almost every aspect of the cabin to satisfy heightening passenger expectations. With high-net-worth owners of superyachts often owning a private jet too, they therefore carry a common set of expectations regarding quality of the design and build, with furnishings, materials and space utilisation playing an essential role in the success of a design. This has resulted in a need for original and innovative designs to create a ‘wow-factor’

that enables luxury brands to differentiate themselves from the competition and protect their market position. Designers of premium environments, whether on a plane or yacht, need to understand the DNA of the owners, not only in terms of lifestyle expectations but cultural and stylistic predications. At one stage gold-plated taps were considered luxury, but the very definition of luxury has changed – premium designs need to move beyond individual furnishings to consider the cabin as a living 3D environment, and the next generation of yacht designs will be built on this. Founded in 1981, awarding-winning consultancy Acumen Design Associates has a long-standing reputation as the world’s foremost transport design consultancy.

Shangri La Sitting in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, and offering fabulous views of the iconic monument, this former palace of Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the city’s most stunning luxury hotels. The Shangi-La’s careful restoration of the property has returned the rooms to their former glory. The Roland Suite – for example – is also listed as a French Heritage site. It’s a little like sleeping in a museum, albeit a beautifully appointed one, with gold leaf mosaics, bronze wall reliefs of Napoleon and elaborate wall and ceiling carvings adding to its drama and grandeur. And what about its potential for passion? Well, the rooms feature marble bathrooms, heated floors, rainfall showers, high thread count bedsheets, and gorgeous décor – think classy cushions and elegant wall art – making for a boutique bolthole you’ll be reluctant to leave. shangri-la.com

Hotel Vernet Set in a 1913 building off the Champs-Élysées, the 50-room Hotel Vernet reopened in 2014. The original post-Haussmann building is the work of French architect Albert Joseph Sélonier, who designed just under 300 buildings in the capital. Contemporary Parisian style abounds in the spacious rooms and suites at Hotel Vernet. The Presidential Suite, the largest of the accommodation options at 100 square meters, is the height of luxury with a large living space and two bedrooms. Oh, and the location couldn’t be better as the hotel sits smack in the middle of the city’s ‘Golden Triangle’, just steps away from the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe. In other words, it’s perfectly situated to explore the most important historic sights in the City of Love. hotelvernet-paris.com

Hot dinners By Adam Coghlan

Discover 2017’s biggest trends in dining 2016 was not a normal year. 2017 looks to be as unpredictable. Thank god for food. It’s interesting to observe that as chefs become more cerebral and guard their bottom line, consumers become more discerning. In short, food has improved dramatically in recent years and a more open dialogue between producers, cooks and diners is a contributing factor. This year we can look forward to an embrace of Mexican street food, more co-operation, a triumph in common sense, a return of real pasta and the re-invention of past masters. That feels like progress to us.

Taco time

In London, the past half-decade has seen a fascination and embrace of what we call ‘gourmet fast food’. Burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza have all undergone a credible reinvention. The mentality runs that if they’re made by top chefs with quality ingredients then there’s no guilt. It’s just the latest in a long line of imports from the States and to complete an arbitrary quintet, there are now tacos. Not just any old tacos, but real tacos. The kind you might find, with house-made tortillas from Oaxacan corn, in Mexico City or in New York or LA. The best of the new crop in London is El Pastór, but interesting iterations of Mexican street food can now also be found at Breddos, Corazon, Temper and Bad Sports.

Chef collaborations

In a new spirit of togetherness, a network of international chefs are collaborating – notionally, intellectually and literally. It represents a departure from the traditional model of fine dining: one that dictated exclusivity, formality, closed-mindedness and an unwavering self-confidence, which

not only stymied creativity, but could also suggest a fundamental insecurity manifest as culinary protectionism. Fraught chefs and stressed cooking made for bad food. A milieu broadly united around the idea that sharing is good and who have crossed paths in the world’s most innovative kitchens – from Noma in Copenhagen to Per Se in New York – are cooking together in shortterm residences or at events that place great importance on ingredients, minimal intervention and a keen awareness of time and place. So where will you find this cross-pollination of cuisines? Head to Lyle’s in London, Hija de Sanchez in Copenhagen, Lysverket in Bergen, Norway, Brae in Birregura, Australia; and Daniel Burns, NYC, USA.

Clean eating backlash

One of the biggest food trends of the past few years has been stopped. The merits of so-called ‘clean eating’ – a lifestyle subscription dominated by green juice and courgetti – has felt the full force of facts by actual doctors. It might not mean a return to the decadent days of butter-rich and wine sodden preparations, but it will it least caution against the hype that’s overstated the medical benefits of ingredients such as spirulina, virgin coconut oil and goji berries. Even its chief proponents have back-pedaled, distancing themselves from the term ‘clean’. Unfortunately ‘having a balanced diet’ or ‘eating high welfare meat, sustainably caught fish and seasonal fruit and vegetables’ doesn’t quite have the same neatly packaged potential for marketeers. #KaleMornay, anyone?

Pasta masters

Fresh pasta’s elemental beauty and delicious simplicity is being rediscovered. In the UK at Padella – a fantastic and cheap pasta-only

counter bar place in London’s Borough Market – and Luca, the follow up ‘Britalian’ restaurant from the team behind The Clove Club. In the States, as Eater’s Bill Addison observes, a renaissance has taken hold, evidenced in the likes of Brooklyn’s Lilia, Monteverde in Chicago and Storico Fresco Alimentari in Atlanta. The modern sensibilities and best traits of young chefs bring updates and quirky innovations to sauces where cooking is according to the fundamental principles of Italian cuisine as much as it is in the exercise of recreating dishes verbatim.

Big-hitters back in business, but restyled

Clare Smyth, Monica Galetti and Claude Bosi are three chefs who we might associate with an outmoded style of cooking in dining rooms from yesteryear. But in London, much in the same way that Philip Howard left The Square to open Elystan Street last year, three icons, from Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Le Gavroche and Hibiscus, respectively, are set to open new restaurants in 2017. The suspicion is that they will take cues from the world’s most voguish operators: a wholesale realisation that moderating the pomp and ceremony and concentrating on sending out thoughtful and delicious plates to expectant diners might well be sufficient to register as a top restaurant. It will be interesting to monitor the developments by Jean-Georges Vongerichten at the Connaught and Tom Kerridge at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower too. Galetti will open Mere; Bosi has taken over Bibendum and Smyth’s restaurant is as yet unnamed. Adam Coghlan is a food, restaurant and travel writer based in London. Tape London An exclusive nightclub offering an elegant party experience for an elite, global crowd in one of the best places in London to party. Everyehing begins with music here and Cîroc vodka features heavily on the menu alongside live sessions, which presents new talent to showcase themselsves, an exlusive nightclub experience for an elite ‘OnArrival’ global crowd and a private members lounge. Cocktails a plenty!

A clear favourite

Try this

Vodka has always been a spirit everyone can relate to. First of all it can be made from just about anything that contains a sugar. Secondly it mixes with just about anything you throw at it. Finally it fits just about any occasion. I haven’t really ever met anyone who has said they don’t like vodka. I’ve heard a lot of people say they prefer other spirits, but as far as vodka goes it is a staple for any club, bar and any home and fits any party. I mention parties because that is exactly where Ciroc fits among the vodka boom that continues to this day. Despite the unshakeable deniability they have some big names attached to the Ciroc label, the rise of Ciroc vodka among the best clubs in the UK and US is undeniable. It has skyrocketed and there isn’t much that is going to stop it. It really fits the bill for me though because it has a nice French background and is made from grapes. It has that appeal of being something of a quintessential brand. It isn’t. Like its current master distiller Jean-Sebastien Robicquet, Ciroc is the life and soul of the party. It has its story but it is adaptable to all its guests. It has a range of flavours that are also becoming second to none. As for cocktails I believe the evolution of vodka stemmed from the adaptations following the Kamikaze to the Cosmopolitan to every fruit, syrup, juice, sweet we want to chuck at it. Vodka is immovable object meeting every unstoppable force. If you want a flavour to be delivered vodka is the Uber spirit. Delivered exactly where you wanted, on time and efficiently and dare I say it at a good price.

Cirque le Soir This place has gained its reputation as a truly unique, immersive experience and word has spread far and wide since the 2009 launch of its London location. This set it on the path to becoming one of the most talked about clubs in the world. While many guests, from high profile celebrities to the biggest party animals in town, make Cirque Le Soir their regular destination on a night out. The vodka list is world-class with Cîroc served until the early hours!

A cocktail for all occasions My cocktail of choice with Ciroc has to be something that harks to France, is classy but suitable for every time, season and occasion. Therefore I’m happy to say I think Champagne fits this with a splash of cranberry and lime. Cosmopolitan meets Champagne cocktail. Ciroc Cosmo 40ml Ciroc 10ml lime juie 45ml cranberry juice Top with Champagne Shake first 3 ingredients and strain into a champagne flute and top with Champagne. Garnish with the zest of an orange. Another favourite and certainly fits into a beautiful alpine setting, although can be enjoyed all year round is our signature Ciroc Blue Stone. Subtle, yet highly refreshing. 40ml CÎROC vodka 20ml Fresh pressed lemon juice 10ml Vanilla syrup Soda water Shake the vodka, lemon juice and syrup together. Strain into an ice filled glass and top with soda water.

girl power Giving tech the feminine touch used to mean dumbing things down and dousing it in pretty colours, but not any more By James Day There was a time in the not so distant past when ‘gadgets for girls’ amounted to something underpowered, unnecessarily pink, patronising, imitative pastiche and borderline sexist. Rewind a decade and Girls Aloud were going up against the Sugababes not just in the pop charts, but by launching rival purple mobile phones from Samsung and Sony Ericsson. You didn’t need a Women’s March to realise things needed to change and manufacturers have taken note, because the market is filling up with desirable devices for the fairer sex that don’t scrimp on style or spec.

Garmin Fenix S Not to be confused with Force Fox Five, the fictional TV pilot featuring Pulp Fiction’s Mia Wallace, Fenix 5 is a smart range of compact GPS watches from Garmin. Aimed squarely at adventurers who are slight of stature, the watches’ svelte size makes them perfect for skinny wrists and the 42mm Fenix 5S has been designed specifically with women in mind. Cosmetically inoffensive, the small but mighty 5S packs a tech spec that belies its tiny proportions and possesses the power to track data for pretty much any sport you can think of, including trail running and open-water swimming. £499.99 garmin.com

But really, it’s the super comfortable ergonomics and sound isolation that makes them a girl’s best friend on the move. £149 eu.audio-technica.com

Dyson’s high-end entrance into the haircare market may have raised a few bushy eyebrows, but a dryer priced at six times that of a regular model boasts innovations to make your hair stand on end. Spinning at five times the standard speed – 100,000rpm to be exact – the Supersonic uses the same digital motor found in its robotic vacuum cleaners, only the thrusters have been reassuringly set to reverse. The motor has been stealthily housed in the handle to stop it from being top heavy and aid smoother air flow, while a temperature sensor stops needless heat damage. £300 dyson.co.uk
