I have a tendency to over-think sometimes. In putting together this F1 special issue of Tempus I’ve been kept awake at night wondering why people who love watches are generally also passionate about motor sports. Is it because both are feats of incredibly complex mechanical engineering? Or is the link something psychological; to do with defying death at high speeds - basically sticking two fingers up to time? Or perhaps the common thread is due to the simple junior school equation; that speed equals distance, divided by time. My quest for knowledge led me to stop armchair theorising and embrace Google search. The simple truth was revealed to be much more mundane. Watch brands have enjoyed a long association with motor racing since the times when drivers literally used to strap stopwatches to their wrists in order to see how long it took them to get from A to B. Then watch manufacturers created special watches with angled faces so that drivers would not have to take their hands from the wheel, and today no doubt on-board and in-ear computers do that for Lewis Hamilton and co. Nevertheless, the relationship between watch brands and racing continues, and long may it do so. If you’re going to the Monaco Grand Prix do come and say hello to the Tempus team. We have partnered with the elite event Amber Lounge so you will find us (hard at work, of course) there. Also in this issue as we race towards summer, we embrace the great outdoors. Patek Philippe brings historical timepieces to London gallery Patek Philippe is putting more than 100 historical watches on display at the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition, which is running at the Saatchi Gallery in London from May 27 to June 7. Visitors will be able to see iconic historical timepieces such as the Antoine Norbert de Patek’s watch; the Patek Philippe Duke de Regla, a minute-repeating pocket watch

with Petite Sonnerie and Westminster Chime on five bells; the first ever Swiss wristwatch made by Patek Philippe in 1868, which was sold to a Hungarian countess; and a.1830 table clock in the shape of a cage featuring five singing birds. These watches will be in the Grand Exhibition in the Patek Philippe Museum

Rolling gnomes Daphne’s restaurant in Chelsea has produced a line of luxury garden gnomes to coincide with this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The restaurant is taking advantage of the notorious banning of gnomes at the annual event, showing solidarity with these eccentric garden creatures. Customers have the chance to re-home these much-misunderstood beings by buying them at the restaurant from May 19. Unlike their Bavarian counterparts, Daphne’s gnomes come in an array of spring-inspired colours, and for every purchase a donation will go to Thrive, a charity that uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health across the UK.

Room, which recreates the company’s museum in Geneva. Like the museum, the room will be divided into two sections. The first will feature some of the greatest timepieces spanning the last five centuries, including the earliest portable watches ever made from the 16th century. In the Temple to Watchmaking section, historic Patek Philippe timepieces dating back to the when the company began will be on display. The exhibition is free and will be open from 9am to 7pm weekdays and Saturdays, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. No bookings or tickets are required.

Savoy to-go? You can now enjoy food from the Savoy to takeaway. Melba at The Savoy – a gourmet takeaway counter – serves pastries, sandwiches, drinks and its speciality, éclairs. Flavours will change seasonally, but the range currently includes flavours such as passion fruit and milk chocolate; lychee, rose and raspberry; salted caramel; lemon meringue; and the Melba – the gourmet counter’s namesake.

atches and racing cars have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship ever since Sir Malcolm Campbell wore a Rolex Oyster to break the land speed record in 1935. It ran “splendidly” throughout, he told onlookers. And it’s no wonder that Hollywood stars are drawn to motor sports; they deliver a high-octane reality check, which is the perfect antidote to all that tinsel. Professional racers Paul Newman and Steve McQueen are perhaps the starriest and most accomplished of this select band, but they’re not alone; other actors with a weakness for speed

include Gene Hackman, Patrick Dempsey, Bruce Jenner, Eric Bana, James Garner and, famously, James Dean, who competed professionally before he died at the age of 24 when his Porsche 550 was hit at an intersection. Newman and McQueen epitomised the apparently effortless masculine cool of the 1960s. Swagger wasn’t required; Newman’s four national Sports Car Club of America championships did all his bragging for him. His quiet machismo found its horological expression in the Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona, a watch

made in homage to him in 1967 and which now sells at auction for up to $100,000. McQueen, meanwhile, wore a Tag Monaco chronograph in motorsports movie Le Mans, but favoured a Rolex Submarine when off-duty. Of course, motor sports finds its purest expression in Formula 1, which came into being at Silverstone in 1950 with the first ever world championship race, won by Italian Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo (note for non-petrolheads: ‘formula 1’ refers to the criteria by which all competing cars must abide).

Grand Prix now take place all over the globe – this year in a record-breaking 21 locations from Mexico to the UAE, with Austria and Russia new to the party. But there can be no doubt that the season reaches its apogee of European sophistication and glamour in Monaco on May 21, where the cars will be driven by daring young men negotiating the most famous and demanding course in the world, from Casino Square to the notorious Fairmont hairpin. Watching them from yachts moored in Monte Carlo’s azure waters will be the filthy

In 2014 no fewer than eight different watch brands stepped up to the plate to sponsor this formidably expensive pastime

Add to the fact that Formula 1 remains one of the most widely televised and watched sports in the world, and it’s no surprise that in 2014 no fewer than eight different watch brands – Rolex, Richard Mille, IWC,TAG Heuer, Hublot, Casio, Oris and Armin Strom – stepped up to the plate to sponsor this formidably expensive pastime. Rolex was the title sponsor for the season’s curtain-raiser, the Australian Grand Prix, while current world champion Lewis Hamilton continues to have a ‘personal relationship’ with IWC Watches, instructing visitors to his website to ‘Check out my dope new watch – IWC Aquatimer Perpetual Calendar! #IWC #geneva #ill #timepiece #swag’. Fellow Brit and 2009 world champion Jenson Button is sponsored by Tag Hauer. Hamilton’s 2.71 million Twitter followers and Button’s 2.08 million are testament to Formula 1’s popularity here and abroad. Then again, Britain has always produced a very special breed of racing driver. British Racing Green’s dominance began with Mike Hawthorn, world champion in 1958, and continued with legendary figures like Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss (aka ‘the greatest driver never to win the title’), James Hunt and Graham Hill, the only driver in history to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport (Le Mans, the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix). His son, Damon, won 22 F1 races and

was world champion in 1996, while fellow Brit David Coulthard won 13 races, the last of which was the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2008. Needless to say, a playboy lifestyle – James Hunt once claimed to have 5,000 notches on the bedpost and tragically early death – Hunt died at 45 and Hill senior perished at 46 when his light aircraft crashed his light aircraft at 46 – by no means diminished the allure of these 1970s racing titans. The period also saw the rise and rise of another Englishman, one Bernie Ecclestone, the man responsible, some say, for turning Formula 1 from a sport of daredevil privateers into a multi-billion dollar business dominated by the ‘Big Four’teams of McLaren, Williams, Renault and Ferrari. As president of the Formula 1 Constructors Association, Ecclestone inaugurated ‘collective bargaining’ with circuit owners, securing a far better deal in the process – in particular, trackside advertising. Lucrative sponsorship and television deals were then just a matter of time. Today, the reckless abandon of the 1970s has been replaced by something safer. There has not been a driver fatality since Ayrton Senna’s death in 1984, though, rather horrifyingly, three track marshals have died since the millennium – the last in Canada in 2013 – while Frenchman Jules Bianchi of the Marussia team is still in a coma after crashing at the Japan Grand Prix in October 2014.

And racing drivers remain as glitzy, with a watch sponsorship as crucial an accessory as a model girlfriend (or in Hamilton’s case, the force of nature that is on-off love Nicole Scherzinger). While Formula 1 is still big business, industrywatchers warn that the staggering expense of recent technological advances are putting competition out of the reach of many of the smaller teams (28 have withdrawn since 1990), since running a team now costs a mind-boggling £200m a year. Lewis Hamilton has gone on record, saying: ‘You’re hoping that it’s a bit of a better year for the likes of McLaren and Ferrari so that we have more people to race.’ For the future the big question among F1’s team principals, owners and investors is: where is the money coming from? F1 currently receives $1.5bn a year in TV rights – a tidy sum, until you compare it to the English Premier League’s £5bn over three years in the UK market alone. Ecclestone’s solution? Along with flashier cars, noisier, more powerful engines and the return of the notorious double points scheme, why not a women-only championship? Interestingly, that’s an idea dismissed by both male and female drivers. ‘There’s no reason a woman can’t race against guys,’ responded Button. ‘These days, with the way the cars are, it is mentally taxing and demanding but not physically.’ Button, a triathlete, added: ‘I can’t run a marathon at the same speed as Paula Radcliffe so I’m sure a woman with the right skill set could be as competitive as any guy in F1.’ For Williams test driver Susie Wolff ‘it’s most definitely not the way forward. First of all, I don’t know where you’d find a full grid of female drivers who are good enough. Second, I have raced my whole career in motorsport as a normal competitor. I can, hand on heart, say it would not interest me at all to win such a race.’ How Formula 1 keeps the spirit of competition alive remains to be seen. One thing is for sure; in Monaco later this month, the drivers tearing through that infamous tunnel and along Monte Carlo’s lovely waterfront will be channelling a primal impulse we all share: risking death to feel alive – and have the whole experience recorded, minute by unforgiving minute, via the minimasterpiece on your wrist.

Born in Geneva, Romain Grosjean drives for the Lotus F1 team. He races under the French flag and holds Franco-Swiss dual nationality. Here, he talks exclusively to Tempus magazine about his love of the sport, his style and his inspiration Have you always loved Formula 1? Formula 1 has always been a part of my life, though I don’t pretend to know every race in history by heart. My father was a great fan of motor sports and I grew up watching legendary drivers such as Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, and later Michael Schumacher. What inspired you to drive? It all started when I was a kid. My dad offered to take me go-karting one day and I enjoyed it so much I didn’t want to stop. I was a pretty bad pupil at school and dad made a pact with me: boost my grades and I could drive at weekends. So I did everything I could to improve at school, leaving him no choice but to help me to achieve my goal. I’m really lucky that the right opportunities presented themselves at the right time. I was able to move up in my early driving competitions when I was young and was fortunate enough to continue to win all the categories in which I was competing. What is it like being a driver at the top of your game? It’s amazing. Wanting to be on top is part of who we are – we are born competitors – not only in my job but in everything that I do. But it’s only the beginning of the story; I want to win races and become world champion. Does Monaco feel special and why? It is special in two ways for me. First, because it’s a fantastic, legendary track. Driving at the maximum speed through the narrow streets is an extraordinary feeling. One mistake and

you’re out. It takes firm nerves and your full focus. It is also my national Grand Prix because it is the closest one to France, so the reception I get is fantastic. Which watch do you wear? I am a great admirer of watches and am fortunate to be in partnership with Richard Mille. Of course, I’m a huge fan of the RM50 Lotus F1 team/Romain Grosjean as it represents both the highest technology of watches and the spirit of racing. Why do you think watches and F1 form such a close partnership? They both target the same things: excellency and precision. There is no place for error in either. Is style important – you have formed other partnerships, including one with luxury brand Felio Siby? Style is important if I want to keep up with my wife. More seriously, I don’t spend hours considering what I’m going to wear, but it’s part of my job to represent brands and to be an example to the future generations. I’m fully aware that there are many children who want to do what I do, so it’s important to take care of every detail. ore often than not these days, it isn’t the elements or the terrain that defeat us when we confront the great outdoors, but our own wardrobes. The Edwardians and the Victorians understood the two basic principles of venturing outside the metropolis. Whether that meant a trip to the beach, a mountain, a desert or even Antarctica, their attire had to be fit for purpose. They also understood that, generally speaking, the human body looks a lot better wrapped than it does unwrapped. Alas, modern society has still to come to a consensus about what is acceptable to wear outdoors and what isn’t. It has none of the innate sense of style – or simple good taste or indeed modesty – that characterised the generations that preceded it. Our society is also, I need hardly add, in the midst of an obesity epidemic. A walk along Bournemouth beach, the banks of Loch Ness or a hike across Dartmoor can therefore be pretty traumatic experiences: sandals and socks, Lycra packed full of cellulite, octogenarians in Speedos, big men in little shorts, little men in big shorts. Every sartorial sin is broken, with what sometimes appears to be wilful abandon. The British weather scarcely helps matters. Heavy waterproofs might well have seemed like a good idea in the morning,when it was overcast and pouring with rain. But in the afternoon, in the blazing sun, their over-cautious wearers look like crumpled, wilting wrecks, sweating fit to flood the Gobi. Shorts on a sunny morning can, for precisely the same reason, be equally hazardous.

The company ought to have paid Nigel Farage not to have worn its merchandise quite so often during the winter. Only time will tell what damage he has done to the brand. As a general rule, clothing that is uncomfortable to wear is, by and large, uncomfortable for others to contemplate. In what other context but the great outdoors would it be considered acceptable to show off so much stomach? Such skinny white chicken legs? Middle-aged men who bend over in shorts that might have fitted them when they were in their 20s would, in any other context, rightfully be liable for prosecution for indecent exposure.There is, in this one area of our national life, absolutely no sense of moderation. Anything seems to go in the Great Outdoors and it is that which has a lot of us yearning for the winter months and the big jackets, scarves, hats and umbrellas which give visitors from overseas a sense that the British might be a little bit easier on the eye than – en masse – than they actually are. At weddings, funerals, black-tie dinners and Royal Ascot – not to mention the office so long as it is not the dreaded ‘dress down Friday’ – the rules about what to wear and what not to wear are quite clear.That is a matter of huge relief to all concerned.The great outdoors, by contrast, present us only with visions of terror; we see ourselves at our very worst. Let us all now resolve as individuals and as families to set an example. Let us be among that small band of Britons who, when they venture out, dress to impress, not to depress.

We have to cast our minds back to the dark days of the mid 1970s to remember the last Aston Martin Lagonda saloon. A breathtaking piece of design, striking in looks and using the very latest technology, it came to be seen as an iconic car for the brand. The same can be said for the latest offering from the newly revived Lagonda marque, with the stunning Lagonda Taraf.

Its name translates as ‘ultimate luxury’ and Aston Martin had originally planned for it to be produced in strictly limited numbers for the Middle East. However, it has revised its position and the Taraf will now be available throughout Europe. The six-litre V12 engine produces 565bhp and has a top speed close to 200mph. Word on the

Bring the noise Oulton Park Circuit in Cheshire provided a superb backdrop to what turned out to be an exciting opening round of the UK’s premier racing series – the British GT Championship. Glorious sunshine, a hot track and even hotter drivers keen to make their mark in this exceptional field of supercars provided the fans with full-on excitement from the very start. Drivers battled to get to the head of the pack, but some of these battles cost more than others, with the crowds watching the GT 3 class Mercedes AMG from the Preci-Spark Team taking a shunt and crashing sideways into the barriers. But they weren’t the only causalities in this determined field; the McLaren 650S from Von Ryan Racing found itself crashing out in spectacular style in the first round, only to be frantically rebuilt by an exceptional race team. Their efforts were applauded by the eager spectators – who were very much up close and personal – watching the team engineers’ heroic efforts when the car drove out of the pit garage for the second round with only minutes to spare. Remarkably, the team finished in a very respectable ninth place overall. High-speed shunts and spin-offs aside, the racing was almost brutal as the drivers gave no quarter in the first race of the season, which saw the reigning GT 3 class champions Beechdean Aston Martin,driven by Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam, continue their winning ways, with the GT 4 class being dominated by the stylish Lotus Evora GT4 from Issy Racing, driven by Oz Yusuf

and Gavan Kershaw. Between races we strolled up and down the pit lane, watching the teams furiously preparing these amazing supercars. Before the next round we nipped into the SRO Club hospitality suite to enjoy a nice glass of wine with our buffet lunch in the elegant racing lounge surroundings,where we had enjoyed the perfect start to the day earlier with a champagne breakfast. The second round took place at the Rockingham circuit as Tempus went to press, and on May 30 the championship moves on to Silvertone. It promises to be another exciting round. Bring on the noise.

Fab Four Volkswagen created a stir by presenting its own ‘Fab Four’ Beetles,without a single mop-top in sight, at the New York Motor Show. The Beetles were the latest models to join the iconic range and included two convertibles and the stylish Pink Edition,which features a range of pink accessories. T

he Jaguar marque holds a special place in the British drivers’ psyche, secured either by the images of stunning cars from the past, or in my case from memories of driving one in the past. Back then, mine was a super-sleek black XJS, which had a rare manual gearbox, sumptuous cream leather, polished beech veneer dashboard and all the toys a boy could wish for. Fast-forward 20 years and the thrill of getting behind the wheel of a Jaguar is just as intense, although gone is the stuffiness of the overblown armchairs and wood. Now, in the cockpit of this latest incarnation of its massively successful F-Type, the stunning R AWD is a lean, mean high-tech driving machine. This Jaguar is something of a beast and taking the convertible version for a spin through (which city) in glorious sunshine was something of a treat.

And it achieved a first for me in my driving career: a chap pulled alongside and shouted for me to rev the engine, just so he could listen to the exhaust notes. I couldn’t blame him. When you hear the imposing, throaty roar it is almost orchestral in tone, but also lets you know that there is something serious going on under the bonnet, even when you’ve stopped at traffic lights. So what is going on under that bonnet? A super-charged 5.0 V8 550PS engine takes this wild animal from 0-60mph in under four seconds and delivers 680Nm of torque, which in layman’s terms means this beauty will sprint off the mark like the proverbial scalded cat. Combine that with the all-wheel-drive system and you have the power and grip that gives you the confidence to really enjoy driving this sports car to the limit. The stiff chassis, coupled with the Intelligent

Torque Vectoring system, redistributes the torque to where it’s needed via the braking system, so if it senses under-steer there is no danger of having the rear stepping out when your putting this cat through its paces. You can even set your preferred driving dynamics, while the onboard display will tell you about your g-force throttle control and even your lap times. The F -Type R AWD is truly a man’s sports car, if it’s not too Clarkson of me to say so. Of course, women will also enjoy taming this beast, but given its size, masculine styling and downright presence, for my money this is certainly a toy for the boys. Clearly the branding people think so too as they have lined up a trio of British screen villains – Tom Hiddleston, Mark Strong and Sir Ben Kingsley – to act as ambassadors. After all, it’s good to be bad.

he stunning McLaren 570S was unveiled last month at the New York Motor Show, and Tempus was there to see it. This British offering comes straight from McLaren’s success on the racetrack – it is the first model presented in the much-anticipated sports series range following its success in GT racing classes around the globe The McLaren 570S is a race-bred sports car and features much of its racing technology. It is set to challenge Italy’s motor racing pedigree, which until now has been unrivalled in the supercar sector. These specialist sports cars feature 30% of McLaren’s bespoke racing components and the 570S coupé follows classic lines, with a midmounted, rear-wheel drive engine nestled within the super strong but super light carbon-fibre chassis, which weighs in at just 80kg. This super structure, coupled with the mighty M838TE twin-turbo V8 engine with its sevenspeed SSG transmission delivers 562bhp and 600Nm torque, giving you a blistering racing performance of 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed in the exclusive 200+mph club. All this performance – at a positively frugal 25mpg – is achieved through McLaren’s understanding of aerodynamics and its use of unique dihedral doors – a key design feature harking back to the company’s iconic F1 supercar made famous during Sting’s heydays of the 1990s. The stunning interior is also more geared to the functionality of driving, with enhanced visibility and better stowage, plus a striking floating centre console which houses all the usual supercar refinements, including Bluetooth, video screen and instrument dials. However, McLaren has gone even further by offering clients ‘By McLaren’ bespoke interior options, allowing owners to truly personalise their cars using a range of leather finishes and colours, which if I’m not mistaken is not an option found on its racing cars. kouzu Hitting the Japanese jackpot ByAshleigh Whitfield I’ve said it on more than one occasion when writing reviews of London restaurants – fine dining isn’t just about the food. It’s about the entire experience, soaking up the ambience and atmosphere, indulging the senses, really enjoying every sip of wine or every bite of beautifully presented food. Japanese dining is high on my list when it comes to ticking off those ‘experience’ boxes. It’s such an elegant ritual. Art-gallery worthy dishes demand the flash of a camera before you dig in, so you can capture their beauty before you devour them with your chopsticks. And the sake. Ahh … sake. It’s fast becoming my drink of choice, so fresh, palatable and complementary to the food. Kouzu caught my eye this month. The cool clientele of the culinary world are whispering about this secret treasure chest of charm, but not so loud that anyone would hear unless they want you to know about it. I absolutely want you to know about it, because I’d rate it as one of the best, if not the best, restaurant I’ve been to in a long time. Yes, Kouzu in Belgravia deserves a lot of attention. It just seems to have gotten everything right. From its stunning Grade II listed building location just a few minutes from Victoria to the

amazingly understated designer décor … its sweeping staircase leading to the omakase sushi bar. All it needs now is a superstar chef. Check. Throw Kyoichi Kai, former head chef of Zuma and Suntory, into the pan and you’ve hit the Japanese jackpot. The staff are amazing. They’re fun, attentive and know exactly what you need and when you need it, without being over-fussy. Sitting at the omakase bar, watching the theatre of sushi and sashimi preparation unfold while enjoying a glass of Dewazakura Izumi Jyudan (an absolutely amazing sake), feels as relaxing as your favourite massage. Using the finest ingredients, Kouzu maintains its dedication to high standards by buying in only the freshest produce. It means that every delicate morsel of eel, tuna or sea bass has been plucked straight from the water and brought to your table. And it tastes that way too. From the new stream sashimi menu, highlights include the ceviche-influenced lime-cured seabass with salsa and green pepper sauce, and the French-influenced pan-fried foie gras with spinach and teriyaki wasabi. It’s the first time I’ve tried foie gras sashimi – a fantastic combination of rich deep foie gras with the sharp wasabi kick to cut through the richness. The chef ’s selection sashimi consisted

of melt-in-the-mouth salmon, yellowtail, scallop and eel, and we devoured every last tender, fresh piece in one go, careful not to spoil the artistic way in which it was presented. Exquisite main dishes followed – each as perfect and balanced as the last. (It’s worth noting that the portion sizes were perfect.) The best, although it was hard to choose, was the roasted black cod, marinated in miso and served with a fennel and celery salad. It was a buttery, almost non-fishy tasting fish which came coated in a beautiful thick miso glaze – the silky texture of the cod worked perfectly with the crunch of the celery. Absolutely to die for. Now, Japanese desserts … usually a bit hit or miss for me. Not this time. Pretty macaroons in palatable pastels again showcased Kouzu’s quirky French influence, but if you’re having these, then you absolutely must leave room for the black sesame ice cream. It was the perfect combo of sweet and savoury, with a creamy consistency which coats the spoon and keeps you going back for more. Simply divine. Kouzu. Remember where you heard the name, you’re going to be hearing a lot more about it. And get booking. Those spaces around the omakase sushi bar are filling up fast. kouzu.co.uk

zinnia Sumptuous sushi – VIP style By Ashley Whitfield No expense has been spared on this sophisticated new bar and eaterie. Zinnia reminds me of the Manhattan Bar in the fabulous Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore. Set across three floors in a huge, beautiful Georgian building in Chelsea, the bar on the ground floor is a stylish, comfy area with leather banquette seating, opulent black and gold decor, and a stunning long bar with a stone counter that is ready to serve up any kind of cocktail you want. Literally anything, because if what you fancy isn’t on the menu, then the handsome bartenders will be sure to rustle up something – just tell them which spirit you like and whether you fancy sweet, sour or something in between, and leave the magic to them. Or if you want to get right into the Japanese fusion vibe, then go for a Japanese whisky or a sake cocktail, which is what they

specialise in. Go through the bar and to the back of the building and you reach the restaurant – a gorgeous dining area with just the right amount of atmosphere and ambience, wonderful lighting and quality furnishings. Serving up amazing Japanese cuisine, it’s Hakkasan-esque with an edge. The basement is a huge area and bar space, where you can book VIP pre-club tables – perfect for groups to relax and chill out. It has the air of a hidden speak-easy or private members bar and would also make a fantastic late-night club – lucky there’s a DJ booth down there then. Upstairs, more restaurant space, mezzanine sty-lee, so all tables and booths fitted around the balcony overlook the main bar. Soak up the ambience below with a great view of the bartenders doing their thing – it’s great for people-watching too. Zinnia is an all-day affair. Bento boxes and sharing platters at lunchtime, cakes and pastries in the afternoon and then dinner and drinks in the evening. It’s fast become

my favourite haunt. But as with all swanky venues, the food has to deliver. I’m pleased to report that beyond all the opulence comes exceptional fusion cuisine and impeccable service to match. To start, a stunning plate of sushi and sashimi. Scottish salmon, ahi (yellowfin) tuna and yellowtail was served up nigiri style – clumps of rice with the fish pressed on top. Smoked eel, which tasted absolutely divine, came layered on top of rice parcels with a cheese, avocado and teriyaki filling. Reminding me somewhat of smoked bacon, the eel was packed full of flavour, meaty without being too tough – definitely one of my favourite dishes. Prawns and soft shell crab coated in tempura batter came next, followed by a mouth-wateringly amazing chicken teriyaki from the robata grill – slow cooked and barbecued, marinated in an absolutely delicious thick sweet soy teriyaki sauce. I easily could’ve eaten another plate of this, until the miso-glazed black cod came out served with mash and tiny asparagus spears., that is. This was followed by roast duck breast, miso carrots and a maple-flavoured sweet and sour sauce. Of course, no Japanese dinner would be complete without a few glasses of sake to bring out the flavour of the dishes. We started with a Tamon Sawayaka Honjozo, which has a light, delicate taste and was easy to drink with our sushi and sashimi, before moving on to a Shindo Uragazanryu, with refreshing notes of pear and pineapple on the palate, which made a great accompaniment to some of the stronger flavoured dishes. ondon isn’t short of restaurants with a view. From those dotted around the Shard (Hutong is the one to check, by the way) to Galvin at Windows and the Duck & Waffle, elevated dining is a cinch in the capital. It’s fitting, then, that in the heart of the towers of power that make up Canary Wharf sits a restaurant that offers a panoramic view of the buildings that house the ‘masters of the universe’, to coin a Tom Wolfe phrase. The aptly-named Plateau sits on the fourth floor of Canada Place, with its triple-height ceilings giving those lucky enough to secure a window seat a view that feels like a little piece of Manhattan on the Isle of Dogs. Internally, it’s an impressive space too. From the iconic furniture – marble-topped white Eero Saarinen Tulip tables and matching chairs, and Arco floor lamps – and a buzzing bar that was packed with local workers unwinding when we arrived at 7pm on a Friday. My dining partner is vegetarian, so she was delighted to discover a separate veggie menu – a rarity in a restaurant that is ostensibly French – while my a la carte offering was sufficiently

impressive that I had to send our server away twice while I ruminated. Our friendly and knowledgeable waiter steered me towards a half dozen beautiful, wobblingly fresh Colchester oysters and a handsome hunk of fillet of Angus beef, served with snail persillade and lemon. Cooked perfectly medium rare and served with some heritage carrots (smaller, tastier, if you’re wondering), this was one seriously fine piece of meat. While I didn’t get to taste any of my partner’s dishes – so protective was she of her veggie delights – she pronounced her starter of asparagus, crisp egg, morels and parmesan, and a main course of ricotta and spinach ravioli with rosemary emulsion “a triumph”. I know, there’s clearly something about fine dining that turns her into Michael Winner. When we left late that evening the vibrant bar was still busy and it was easy to see why this restaurant – part of the acclaimed D&D group – has been such a hit. Do believe the hype The latest vintage of the Italian classic has got everyone going nuts – it’s one of the best vintages ever and it’s a fantastic investment – if you can get hold of it, that is. Ever since I tasted the now-legendary 1997 vintage I’ve been hooked on Brunello di Montalcino. This 100% sangiovese that hails from a hilly town in Tuscany is almost quintessentially Latin. It has elegance and charm on the surface, but a deceptively powerful muscularity within its brownruby looks. Not as famous as a Bordeaux or Burgundy, or indeed a Barolo, this is all about to change thanks to a ‘vintage of a lifetime’, the justreleased 2010. This vintage has had the critics struggling for superlatives and wine-lovers straining their plastic as the prices spiralled overnight. I had one email from a supplier that literally said: “Pssst, do you wanna buy some 2010 Brunellos?” as if he was selling something bordering on the illegal. The wine region was the first to get DOCG status in 1980 and is tightly regulated, with an insistence on a long maceration in oak and also in the bottle before it can be sold. With prices of Bordeaux and other ‘safe bankers’ in wine investment falling, it could be argued that investors and the trade have been dying to get a new contender in the ring, but there is no denying the quality of this wine. Thankfully, almost all of the wines in the region are showing well, with a few of particular note. Brunello 2010 is spectacular … let’s just hope you can track some down.

Something to Crow About

Fattoria Poggio di Sotto, Brunello di Motalcino The standout of a 63-bottle tasting, this clear, light wine looks old on first inspection and then bursts open in the mouth with an explosion of cured meat, rose petals, wood and spice. You could drink it happily now or wait and drink over the next 20 years; it will be fascinating to see where it goes. The last vintage from legendary vintner Piero Palmucci before he sold the winery on. foxyvintner.com, £595 (case of six) Gianni Brunelli, Brunello di Motalcino Second favourite on the night, this has a beautiful balance between a strong structure and subtle use of oak. Tastes of grilled and cured meats mix with cherry and orange in a gorgeous depth of flavour. A comparative steal at the price. frw.co.uk, £301 (case of 12) Biondi Santi, Brunello di Motalcino The winery that first put the region on the map makes another outstanding wine. Like the rest of this vintage, the wines are approachable now but are clearly built to last. This ruby, almost Burgundian beauty, is tightly coiled with firm tannins that will need half a decade to open out. Well balanced, elegant with the power of 13.5% alcohol searing through the clear, deceptively light colour. frw.co.uk, £359 (case of six)

Loving the new luxury range of single malt whisky from The Macallan – the 1824 Masters range – which comes in pure Lalique crystal decanters.There are three in the range and they vary according to the age, size and rarity of the sherry-seasoned French and American oak casks. The series ranges from Reflexion (£900), to No.6 (£2,800) to the apotheosis of the Macallan range, M (£3,300) all a fitting tribute to Bob Dalgarno, the master whisky maker.

Craft spirits are now part of every good night out and are stocked in all the world’s best venues. Good news then that new, awardwinning Sussex dry gin, Blackdown, has been chosen to be one of the specialist craft gins in the Crow’s Nest bar, one of the ritzy hangouts in the world’s new superliner, the Britannia. The largest ship in the P&O fleet has a British feel for food and drink, including the involvement of celebrity chefs Marco Pierre-White and James Martin. Apt then, that this all-British gin has been honoured so soon after its inception. The secret ingredient that adds creaminess? Why silver birch sap, of course, which is becoming quite the trendy botanical to have in your gin these days.

rom the glamour of its 1960s heyday to the moneyed-metropolis-in-the-Med it has become, Mark Southern discovered Monaco still has it, just a different kind of it. Monte Carlo of the 1960s equated to classic chic, while the Monte Carlo of the 2010s is a playground to the rich. When Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III in 1956 she represented the final jewel in Monaco’s undisputed crown of global glamour. Nowhere else on Earth had the splendour, reputation and style of the Mediterranean principality. Popular culture followed, with Ian Fleming and Cubby Broccoli’s Bonds frequently found shaking not stirring Monte Carlo, while the world’s elite had only one location in mind when seeking a few days in the lap of luxury amid boulevards of palm trees.

However, as the 1960s turned into the 1970s, the fashion faded, as global trends are wont to do, before the wealth surge of the 1980s re-energised Monaco into a playground for new money, as well as old. This is the Monaco we find today; still sun-drenched and glamorous, but awash with high-rise luxury to cater for all needs, no matter how niche. It’s a more inclusive place, insofar as one percenter places can be, where anyone is welcome if they can afford it. The phrase ‘if you have to ask how much, you can’t afford it’, was made for Monaco, but equally there are no Pretty Woman-esque expectations about what money looks like either. A world away from most of the south coast of France, Monaco remains a must-visit destination, but for different reasons than when Princess Grace was gliding around.

Situated on the famous, eponymous hairpin bend, the Fairmont looks over the startling blue of the bay, providing a higher kind of luxury you rarely see. From its impressive lobby to its relatively spacious rooms, the decor is exquisite, and a recent €46m refurb has made a special place even more so. On glorious summer days you’ll most likely want to get out of the high-rise and explore the stunning Riviera, with its perfect beaches and chic cafés. r r i v i n g a t t h i s h a n d s om e Buckinghamshire country house in a Rolls-Royce Ghost – not mine sadly, but on loan from those kind folk at Goodwood for the weekend – gave me a flavour of what many visitors to this historic property must experience. A couple of years back, for example, saw a convoy of super-luxe cars draw up as Hartwell House was the setting for 2013’s annual G7 meeting. Indeed, I’d like to think that when they weren’t debating the levers of power that control the world, the likes of Obama and Cameron took time to splash about in the spa or go for delightful country walks around the hotel’s magnificent grounds. Although not billed as a family hotel as such – Hartwell House is aimed more at couples looking for a weekend retreat – our six-year-old daughter took great delight in strolling the vast manicured grounds with us. It’s impressive from the start, with visitors arriving via a gravel driveway past the old coach-house – now a spa and business centre – and a beautiful octagonal church before coming to a stop next to a statue of King George

III’s eldest son, Frederick, Prince of Wales. We struck out further and took a stroll around the lake before heading down the tree-lined Lime Avenue around the eastern perimeter.This gave me the rare opportunity to showcase my schoolboy knowledge of mythology, pointing out statues of Greek god Zeus and Roman goddess Juno to my daughter. A roll of her eyes, and her spotting a rabbit hopping through the undergrowth, showed that my arcane wisdom was no match for the fun that could be had in this awe-inspiring natural setting. The rest of the property is similarly impressive, from the Great Hall, an antique-filled symphony to English baroque – to the morning room, drawing room, library and bar. Our room, which was situated in the 17th-century section of the hotel, also has an illustrious history. It was the royal bedroom of Louis XVIII’s niece, the Duchesse D’Angoulême, the daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Furnished in a period style and dripping with antiques, it verged on the chintzy but, frankly, when you’re

staying in a place like this the last thing you’re looking for is high-tech mood lighting and iPadcontrolled curtains. Dinner that evening was taken in the grand Soane dining room, which has a dress code for gentlemen at dinner. The menu was a classic offering that included twice-baked Cornish crab and cheese soufflé, beef bourgignon with savoy cabbage and herb-crusted potatoes, and a historic baked hazelnut and cherry tart, served with tonka bean ice cream. As is always the case with a fine hotel, though, we were already thinking of bed by the time the coffees arrived. The idea that we could just float upstairs and flop into that four-poster bed, perhaps nibbling on a couple of the home-made chocolates that had been left in our room, was a far greater draw than drinking dessert wine by the open fire downstairs. We’ll leave the late-night carousing to the titans of high finance. A good night’s sleep in a superb room is the perfect end to a day spent at this beautiful Buckinghamshire gem.
