Words from upstairs Peter Jenkinson – Editor and aspiring astronaut Look, I am well aware that my ambitions to take myself through the stratosphere are unlikely to pass, but does that mean I should take it off my bucket list? There are desires, cravings and pursuits a plenty in this month’s magazine, a word of warning, this could be a good month for your credit card company. As some one pretty notable probably once said, life is out there so go and grab as much as you can of it and enjoy yourself. Let’s get together Two teams, equal ambitions, might we have created the perfect partnership?

T

he MJS group takes advantage of many exclusive and private trade programmes that generate high yield returns with greatly reduced risk which are generally restricted due to large minimum investment requirements, most typically available only to institutional investors. “We’re investing in Tempus as we believe the readership is the perfect target market for both our existing financial products and also the new ones we have been developing for many months. Our sponsorship of Tempus is being financed from profits created after our investors have been paid, we think the Tempus product is perfect for our ambitions and are excited about offering its readers new and innovative financial instruments ahead of the wider market” Martin Westney, Director of MJS Capital added “We’ve plenty of plans afoot for the development of the Tempus portfolio during 2017 and believe the synergy of our group and that of the Tempus readership offers the perfect platform for our expansion plans”. Jay Boisvert, publisher of Tempus Magazine says “The sponsorship of Tempus by MJS Capital really solidifies what we’ve been working towards for many months, finding a partner such as this with high ambitions to create access to the luxury market mirrors our own passions”. Over the coming months we’ll be expanding our investment sections and bringing exclusive offerings to Tempus readers, if you want to have a behind-the-scenes view of the luxury market Tempus is absolutely the only read you’ll need.

We’ve caught up with Martin Westney of MJS Capital to find out more about his company and their profitable operation: Q: How long have you been operating as MJS Capital? A : We’ve been set up with our new operation since 2015 after a number of years stress testing our new investment opportunity. The investment of our initial bond offering closed successfully earlier this year and we’ve now launched a new updated version currently being well received in the market. Q: Your bonds offer very attractive yields compared to other similar products, do you get people questioning these impressive returns?

- 16 -

A: Well, most bonds borrow from their investors and repay them with the lowest possible interest whilst making them still appear attractive. We aim to pass on the maximum return, establish longer term relationships and carry a bond portfolio with very low overheads. We’re passionate about creating long term partnerships with our clients and all enjoying the rewards. Q: So there must be an element of risk somewhere? A : Our investment products carry a very low risk. Not only are our bonds insured but the method by which we create capital growth is that of arbitrage. This simultaneous purchase and sales of assets is the basis on which our retail

- t ea m wo r k -

bond operates. We have access to private trade programmes who operate on an arbitrage basis but can only make a purchase of any security if we have a contract with an already agreed buyer through regulated traders. Q: Ok, so there must be a restrictive level of investment needed to get involved? A: No, far from it. These private trade programmes do carry a large minimum investment requirement and this by default allows less people to profit from them. One of our aims is to create an entry level that is accessible to a wider audience. Our retail product however is open from an initial £5000 investment. Q: What does the future look like for MJS Capital? A: After a successful take-up of our first fixed income secured bond we’re continuing with the ethos of making luxury products much more accessible. Currently we’re looking at creating

several styles of yacht bond, fine art bonds and classic car bonds, each of which allows differing levels of financial access for potential purchases and, as with our existing portfolio of financial instruments, very attractive returns on investment. Q : Is your partnering with Tempus part of a long term strategy? A: Very much so. Our sponsorship of this luxury publication allows us access to a readership we know do, and continue to wish to, make their money work hard for them. We’re using a percentage of our allocated profits to support businesses within the UK economy with whom we see mutual benefit and look to invest in them and further speed their growth. Tempus is the first of many such investments we’re making and believe this to be both very strategic and innovative one. The Tempus team share our ambitions and our plans for 2017 and beyond are taking great shape.

Ship Shape A leader in the bespoke build and refit of superyachts, the Pendennis Shipyard is a British success story, a place filled with heart and soul On entering their ‘Yacht Club’you know you’ve arrived in a very special place. Images of oceangoing crafts of all ages, and in various states, adorn the walls. The huge dark wood boardroom table at the centre is a relic from the old deck planking from 1903 schooner Adela when she was restored in 1996. On the wall is a signed guitar given as a thank you from a world famous rock star whose yacht had a refit here. There are many more impressive accolades and awards that sitting quietly proud in this aged dockers building.- fully heated and weatherproofed now of course. The company has much to feel proud of; From the world’s largest privately-owned sailing catamaran Hemisphere, custom built by the yard and subsequently launched in 2011, to

the Malahne, a 50m classic motor yacht from 1937 Pendennis relaunched in 2015 following a two-and-a-half year programme of restoration to return it to its original Art Deco glory. The variety of work undertaken here in Falmouth, Cornwall, is vast and how they manage to attract some of the best craftspeople on the planet. Pendennis invested in its future launching an apprenticeship scheme back in 1998 and since then has added another dozen apprentices to the scheme every two years (they welcomed the 200th apprentice this year). A further apprenticeship specialising in surface finishing skills was added in 2005. “The vast majority of those who finish the course end up working for the company. We’re

keen solution seekers you see and its why the apprentice scheme is so very successful, its full of committed and passionate people who want to learn and look to pass on their own skills to the future people in the business” said Toby Allies, Sales and Marketing Director of Pendennis. Back in 1993 Pendennis saw a management buy-out of the yard originally founded by the famous yachtsman and entrepreneur Peter de Savary in 1988. Pendennis Shipyard now has 30 bespoke yachts and over 200 refit projects under its belt and, in the last few years, has invested over £22m, helped with money from the European Regional Development Fund, to keep up with the evolving super yacht market. Back in 1988, a 50m yacht was considered large, but now that’s the average size and so they’ve rebuilt shore side facilities and added a non-tidal wet basin plus have acquired a 640-tonne travel hoist to transport yachts up to 60m inside to undergo works of all kinds - from regular service sessions through to major refits. If you’ve a need, be it with your yacht, super yacht or mega-yacht Pendennis Shipyard is more than ready.

Are Yachts a good investment? There are many reasons people invest in boats, for the lifestyle, the love of the sea, the freedom to roam the ocean, the ability to sail across to private beaches, even just to get from A to B in some style. They also invest looking for a financial return, either through buying a run down boat in winter and doing it up for resale in the summer or aiming at the charter market. Some companies even invest in boats as water taxis. So are boats a good investment, well it really depends how you measure it and what you are looking for? Boats depreciate roughly at around 10% each year, especially true for mass produced boats. So they are more akin to a car in that an average model will depreciate with time, however a well-known brand, a particularly prized make, or a limited edition with great heritage, unique provenance and perhaps celebrity association can do very well. The last few years have seen the price of some classic cars sky rocket upwards, and with a classic boat that is rare, then you will see it keep its value and in some cases even rise if the prevailing market is good. With a little clever thinking a boat can be a useful source of income, with the charter of a good luxury yacht ranging from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of dollars a day for the larger super yachts, even the super-rich have delved into the charter market since 2008. Now everything is considered an asset and put to work raising capital. Many boat owners were relieved to have a physical asset such as a yacht that did not fall as calamitously as shares in the market crash of 2008. Boats must be well maintained and looked after to prevent the usual wear and tear that occurs on the water. A professional yacht management

company is often the best way to preserve the boat in good condition and keep its value as you can show that it has been properly serviced and they can even save you money when it comes to dockage and other operational costs. Of course if you really want to make a huge return on your investment, don’t just buy the yacht, buy the yacht company! In 2010 FL Partners invested in Sunseeker on behalf of their clients and then Wang Jianlin, the chairman of Dalian Wanda, bought Sunseeker for £320 million in 2013. This obviously made FL Partners’clients very happy. Golfer Rory McIlroy is reported to have made around £2 million on his investment. Wang Jianlin was originally looking at buying around thirty Sunseeker boats for a series of marinas he was building in China. So he figured it would be cheaper to buy the company. FL Partners are said to have made 10 times their original stake in the deal. This is clearly the way to go if you really want to make the big bucks. British brands are particularly well regarded in China who admire British engineering and innovation and their consumption of luxury goods is still growing in the aviation, boat and car sectors. In the end the real investment return on a yacht is the peace and serenity you get on the water, the pleasure in driving an incredible piece of engineering, and the joy in the sheer speed, exhilaration and experience that such a boat brings. The purchase of a boat is very much a lifestyle choice and you only have to attend the proliferating boat shows to see how passionate people become once they join the yacht owning community. A community that is a private wealth network in itself, often used for business as well as leisure!

Rulebook rewritten Italian styling with intelligent thinking – the latest update to the Avanti EVO is set to be a soaraway success For three decades this aeronautical powerhouse has served an eclectic customer base, its style and craftsmanship in the category unsurpassable. With the launch of the new Avanti EVO they’ve retained all the core values that have always impressed yet gone that extra mile, quite literally, to redefine the private jet rulebook.

Not only the fastest twin turboprop in the world, its running costs can cause considerably less bother to your bottom line. While better for your budget this craft maintains impressive in-air performances up to its 41,000 foot ceiling with a cruising speed of 402kts (463mph, 745kmh) and ranges of 1720nm (1979 miles, 3185km). Compared to others

- 35 -

in this class of private jet, the results offer a two-fingered salute. Business aviation is under scrutiny as ever, yet with its ability Avanti EVO’s remarkable airfield performance brings runways of under 1000m into scope, a steep approach and climb certification opens up new airfields and destination options which are closer to final destinations.

On-board it is impressively comfortable and aches with Italian styling, even sat in motion on the tarmac it was a joy to be on board. In the air the whisper-quiet cabin impressed us enough to ask for another quick spin across the London skyline. Gabriella Somerville, managing director of Connect Jets said: “I am delighted to be the sole sales agent for the Avanti EVO in the British Isles and Channel Islands to be demonstrating this luxurious aircraft at London City Airport. Never has the pressure on aviation to lead the way in reducing the impact of transport on the environment been so high and with this in mind the introduction of the EVO to the UK Aviation market could not be more timely. connectjets.com Piaggioaero.com

Business takes off Cruise at altitudes of 41,000 feet, enjoy speeds at Mach 0.85 over 900 kmh and travel up to 9,360 km in a single journey. The Bombardier Global 5000 is certainly leading the way in the business jet market.

- 39 -

It was an absolute joy to take to the skies in the Global 5000 on a recent trip, although the pilot could’ve warned us about his decision to show off his skills with a performance take-off. We only spilt a little of our drinks - and frankly it was worth it. We were at a smooth cruising altitude in no time, well above the weather. The configuration of the Global 5000 can be manipulated into many different styles dependent on your travelling and business needs. The outstanding WiFi access means there’s no need for a fixed desk in one global locations. Instead the jet can house a sky high boardroom. Perfect for the most impressive client meetings. businessaircraft.bombardier.com

The evolution of left-turn luxury Ever increasing competition in the left turn sector means airlines are having to continually up their game to attract passengers and increasingly turning to outfits such as Acumen Design to assist.

T

wo decades ago the first lie flat bed for BA was a First Class only product. Today most long haul business classes include this, so how will airlines compete in the future to create even more luxurious travel? Anthony Harcup from Acumen Design Associates, the company responsible for Etihad’s super VIP cabins, outlines the future of luxury air travel. More space and privacy Strange things are happening in the luxury commercial aviation space. As many as ten airlines have jettisoned First Class altogether, preferring to focus on a business

class offering that provides a flatbed for a long haul flight – traditionally the nirvana of airline travel. Meanwhile other airlines, such as Etihad, have created a new level of super VIP travel experience to compete with private aviation. The manifestation of this is the three room personal apartment in the sky that Etihad launched in 2014 called The Residence. It offers a sitting room, private shower and a double bedroom in this luxury experience at 39,000 feet. It also comes with your own personal butler for the entire trip. Etihad is the primary innovator in this space, but we expect other airlines to follow. The two critical objectives when designing a VIP aircraft experience are to create privacy

- 40 -

and space. Many first class offerings are now more like personal pods than simple seats and we expect this trend to continue. As wireless technologies and miniaturisation take hold in aviation, many of the historical restrictions to aircraft design will disappear, providing more opportunities to create personalisation, privacy and peace in the air. The return of supersonic Since the demise of Concorde in 2003, the search for a supersonic successor has been underway. Currently there are around ten projects in development that could see supersonic aviation return to the air by 2020. The focus is almost exclusively on private jet travel, with eight to

- fu t u r e fli g h t -

twelve passengers enjoying one of the most exclusive experiences in the air. Designing a contemporary supersonic interior is a very different brief from that of contemporary commercial or even private jet interior. The purpose of a commercial flight is to entertain people with movies, music and food, whilst trying to distract them from the concept that they are in the air at all. However supersonic flight IS the experience. Like being a passenger in a Formula One racing car, you are part of an elite club – experiencing flight at not only twice the altitude of a Jumbo, but faster than the speed of sound. The environment needs to enhance this proposition.

Supersonic travel – accentuating the experience In a private supersonic jet, the seating could allow face-to-face dining but also rotate towards the window for a view of the curvature of the earth and a cocktail. Touch-sensitive display glass could engage the passenger in a more immersive experience – you may want to explore a virtual 3D model of the aircraft and its features? Or maybe choose from a range of interactive maps laid over the viewable landscape, such as cityscapes, geographical terrain, transport links, points of interest? With developing organic OLED technology, it might be possible to create a living interior – imagine a 360 degree view of the curvature of the

- 41 -

earth from 60,000 feet – a flying planetarium! The private jet of the future – for work, rest and play Private jets will become more optimised for the needs of passengers, reducing downtime for the individuals that fly in them. Expect to see something akin to a luxury boutique hotel suite with dedicated work areas, high end entertainment zones, rest areas and a cocktail bar stocked with the travellers’ favourite brands, all delivered in an understated but supremely elegant way. Traditional stereotypes about luxury are being eroded: the days of large leather chairs, walnut and cedar tables and gold trim are old-hat. Luxury is evolving.

delivery Some survey somewhere probably said that most men dislike shopping. What is there actually to like? Well, the end result of new clobber can be pretty pleasing but how can we cut out the actual shopping bit? On a mission to revolutionise the male shopping experience is DAPPAD’s founder Erika and her team of crack stylists. It’s a big and bold mission statement but I’m only into my first hand-picked box of clothing and am absolutely hooked. I was lucky enough to speak to founder Erika and it is entirely likely she nodded off as I explained, in much detail, my preference of socks, why I believe belts are important and the reason I am moving to a white only shirt collection – I am sorry! DAPPAD London is a fully personalised online shopping experience; fill in some straightforward questions and stylists will prepare a box and send

it to your door. The stylists curate according to your lifestyle and simply get better as a rapport is built, you get the box, try your new gear on and send back what you don’t want. Shipping is complimentary both ways. Look good without leaving the house, and when you’ve decided on your outfit for the day you can step out in style, inspired by the bespoke nature of Saville Row together with Scandinavian style. DAPPAD is on a mission to make sure men feel safe, styled and inspired with less effort. So far as I’m concerned mission accomplished.

Mclaren Track Day Hot laps and adrenaline pumping horsepower By Anna Beesley Driving under the bridge onto the hallowed tracks of the Goodwood circuit you can’t help but get a tinge of nervous anticipation about what you’re about to experience. Steeped in history and nestled at the foot of the Sussex Downs, the track is the only classic circuit in the world to remain in it’s original form after being lovingly restored in preparation for the now-famous Goodwood Revival in 1998. I had never driven a supercar before and after a short safety briefing (‘what do to if the car spins out of control’… ‘What’s most important is your lives’ etc) its safe to say that I was actually quite apprehensive about getting behind the wheel of a 650 horsepower death-machine. As soon as I opened up the slick dihedral door to the new McLaren 650S, I couldn’t wait to get the pedal to the metal. On the first lap my expert guide instructed on the smoothest racing lines and optimum breaking points and by the third time round my inner speed demon came out (or so I thought). After parking up and plugging in the XD chip from the car into the analysts

- 63 -

laptop I was told that I was using about ten percent of the car’s throttle and brake power. Embarrassing. Round two was a whole different story that made me understand why people become speed freaks. Feeling the engine turn from a purring kitten into a full blown beast when I put my foot down was breathtaking and soon I was ripping down the home straight at almost 130 mph with a Cheshire cat grin on my face. The fact that this car can go up to 207mph is just astonishing. The gear changes were almost unnoticeable and it’s stability on the track surprising. On the second round of analysis I was told I used a hundred percent of the throttle and break power and beat my previous best lap by 1 minute 20 seconds. The ‘Hot Lap’ was definitely the pinnacle of the experience when my instructor, Mike took to the wheel to show what the car could really do. I don’t even know what the lap time was but the adrenaline rush of approaching a right-angled corner at 174 mph is definitely not something I’ll ever forget.

Golf Upgraded Take this great walk along the Scottish East coast. Even if your round is under-par the views and surroundings are breathtaking enough for you to forget about your scorecard. If you’ve not landed into Edinburgh airport it is a real treat (weather permitting) incredible views of the city and glimpses of the Scottish landscapes further afield. We arrived to look at the Renaissance Club, a gated members club offering selected opportunities for all to sample their hospitality and marvel at the course designed by the renowned US golf architect Tom Doak. This 18-hole championship course is a

link course of note and rather than disrupt an ideal walk as someone one said, you’d not get to go on this spectacular hike if you weren’t with your clubs. A challenging course than runs along the coast, you play from a lighthouse escarpment across the beach below, discover spectators of the seal variety as you pass and even get to use your 9 iron as a beater and watch the grouse take flight from the undergrowth – Its is a truly jaw-dropping experience to play

here – The bunkers can however be brutal. Luxuriate after your game in their bijou spa, take to the Clubhouse Bar and then savour fine cuisine prepared by chefs trained in Michelin-starred restaurants. The rooms are truly sumptuous and the ideal resting spot before you rise for another on-course adventure, we highly recommend taking out a forecaddie – They’re both entertaining and informative on both the surroundings and on your shots. By Emma Oliver An unspoilt haven of beauty, Athos, the right leg of Halkidiki in North East Greece, is home to Eagles Palace, the only five star hotel on the entire peninsular… Landing in Thessaloniki, the onward journey was a pleasant surprise. Expecting a dry landscape, the transfer delivered lush green hills, beautiful flora and fauna and picturesque views with added dramatics on our arrival with leaden skies overhead. After around 90 minutes we’d arrived at our five star ‘Small Luxury Hotel of the World’ Eagles Palace Hotel & Spa, just outside the coastal village of Ouranopolis. Next morning, heavy skies gone, the horizon dawned blue all around and as I looked out to a perfectly painted Aegean sea view, sat atop our private pool took an espresso to help me drink it in (and wake up after an incredible nights sleep). Every room here is a one with a view, but, and excuse the near poetic verse here : The serenity of the location is heightened by the lapping shallows below, add bird song and olive trees which further expands the chorus. All this contained within a cool breeze that whispers down from the majestic Mount Athos - the relaxation is near unrivalled. It is no surprise then that tranquility, wellbeing and relaxation is what really grips guests here. The combination of endless delicious food options, exceptional hospitality and that this hotel is in the hands of a third generation of a family give you

Greece

is the word Halkidiki’s best kept secret the genuine feel that they care passionately about delivering an outstanding standard of holiday. All the guests I talked to felt they’d struck gold finding this place, positive comments all round, and rightly justified. Eagles Palace is positively enchanting. The personable staff each take pride in their place of work and deliver to the high standard that the Eagles Palace has set. Well, the prestige label of ‘Small Luxury Hotel of the World’ is indeed a huige accolade and one worked hard for. As are its other awards, a blue flag beach accreditation and several Green/Eco accolades, all proudly hang out together in the entrance, making a grand entrance even grander. The interior is classy. I particularly loved the courtyard with its colour, candles and cushions. The elegant bedrooms and bathrooms in the main hotel are highly recommended to consider staying in, however, you’ll perhaps prefer one of their private bungalows with its own pool.

- 69 -

Eagles Palace is a five-star haven offering solitude and quiet corners, each allowing you to indulge in its charm. That said, families are welcome. There’s a great kids club catering for all ages from four months up. One of the best I’ve witnessed - and being a trained nanny in a former life; there’s been a few. The older kids were out scuba-diving, the younger kids engaged in arts and crafts. Relaxing in the luxurious spa is a must, and if you don’t fall apart at the prospect of paper pants, I can recommend the lime and ginger exfoliation as a treatment. Should you tire of relaxing you can take up their diving and water sports offerings, but please don’t get up if you don’t want to. A sunbrella located bell can cater for your every whim whilst remaining horizontal, more towels, a G&T or whatever might be. Like any holiday it takes a day to relax, but you will feel at home here. I’ll most certainly be returning here, many of the guests we had the pleasure of meeting had done just that – repeatedly. If you’re after some well deserved downtime, then the trick of getting some should be to have the Eagles Palace Hotel & Spa up your holiday list sleeve. Offering secrecy and solace together with family fun, one thing though; try and keep it to yourself ? eaglespalace.gr

We’ve assigned ourselves the task of introducing the latest arrivals on the ABV scene, consider us your guides to the spirit world and beyond. Wild Turkey Rare Breed Enjoy your flavours big and bold then wet your whistle with this arrival, its first visit to the UK. Already the number one barrel proof bourbon in the USA, Rare Breed has been carefully crafted by Jimmy Russell, the 82 year old Master Distiller legend of Wild Turkey (aka the ‘Bourbon Buddha’). They’ve achieved an easy-drinking bourbon at such a high alcohol strength (56.4% ABV) and this is no easy feat. The advice is to keep it in the freezer so you can serve it chilled without ice diluting it.

Kraken Spiced Rum

Launching this special edition bottle with priority given to the the mysterious Kraken Black Ink Society – a membership programme we’re told that brings it members “untold goodness, perks and privileges to all”. This drink is a strong and rich rum fused with eleven spices including cinnamon, vanilla, cherry and coffee aromas combining to create a peppery finish. The Kraken is 40% abv. proof and pairs perfectly with ginger beer for The Perfect Storm – Hold tight!

The Botanist

This dry gin from Islay, the first and only of its kind. Handcrafted and distilled on the Scottish island The Botanist is a gin that is quite unique, nine classic gin botanicals are amplified by 22 herbs and flowers, local to the distillery and all foraged by hand from the hills, shores and bogs of the Hebridean Island by botanical scientists. It holds a rich, mellow taste and a citrus freshness to boot – Its heart and soul is from the very place it was created, a taste bud sensation.

Bourbon Street

Three of the best

Over the centuries, Bourbon has proven itself to be one tough cookie. Its survived Prohibition, wars and countless other challenges over the years. It’s proven to be resilient and even though production can be traced back to the late 1700s, never has it been as popular as it is today. But why now? First up, modern culture. The reputation of American TV shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire have sparked increased popularity of the spirit and made ‘classic’ styles like the Old Fashioned and sipping neat whiskey ‘cool’ again. Secondly, its accessible flavour as a barrel aged spirit. Bourbon is a distilled spirit primarily made from corn, which means it has a sweeter profile than other world whiskies made from barley. Unsurprisingly, we have a much sweeter tooth than our ancestors which makes the whisky approachable to a wider market. Finally, there is simply a much bigger range of bourbon to choose from. From entry level, to the popular flavoured bourbons, or older aged whiskies to drink neat like any fine single malt. There is a bourbon style to suit everyone. Now, bartenders across the UK embrace Bourbon and increasingly recommend the spirit ahead of others. You’re hard pushed now to find a cocktail bar without at least one bourbon cocktail on the menu. Lucky us!

Jim Beam Double Oak The newest expression from the world’s number one bourbon. Double Oak is a new take on their signature Kentucky Straight Bourbon, matured in not one, but in two charred American oak barrels for double the depth of flavour. Excellent whiskey for an Old Fashioned or on the rocks. Those wellversed in whiskey will note aromas of vanilla and hints of toasted wood that lead into deep char and oak flavours with rich caramel and toffee notes. It has a distinct spiced oakiness which lingers on the palate.

- 74 -

Signature Craft This beauty is aged for twelve years; it’s a hand-crafted bourbon made from the finest ingredients carrying notes of caramel, deep vanilla and oak. Never compromised, this spirit should be savoured neat or on the rocks. Maker’s Mark Created by Bill Samuels in Happy Hollow, Kentucky. Maker’s Mark is apremium Kentucky straight bourbon that is sought after for its smoothness, which comes from its unique recipe made with red winter wheat instead of rye. It is also appreciated for the master craftsmanship that goes into the creation of Maker’s Mark and its distinctive look. Each bottle is created in an old-fashioned, hand crafted way to provide an authentic taste of Kentucky with exceptional quality, and as a final touch hand-dipped in red wax.

satan’s whiskers

The Ward 8 is a delicious alternative to the classic ‘Whiskey Sour’. The drink was created in the late 1800s by bartender Tom Hussion of Locke-Ober Café in Boston (which sadly closed its doors just last October). He created it in honour of the cafe owner; Martin Lowmasney who was running for Election in the voting district of Ward 8 at the time.

Satan’s Whiskers in East London has a great American whisk(e)y selection, some of the best cocktails in London and a hip hop playlist to die for. See if Andy Louden the bar manager is about, he will make you one of the best Manhattans you will ever drink.

Liquid Mercantile

I recently found a hidden gem of a bar in Gardiner, Upstate NY. Liquid Mercantile opened its doors a few months back. The proprietor, Gable Enzo, is the former Chief Distiller at Tuthilltown Spirits Distil ler y, Ne w York’s first whiskey distillery prohibition. They produce their own spirit and all the ingredients you’ll see at their Farm Bar are hyper local.

- 75 -

Bourbon and food pairings you’ve probably never thought of:

Try chargrilled oysters alongside a flavoursome bourbon like Signature Craft from Jim Beam. It will change your life. My sweet tooth calls for banana bread, vanilla ice cream and Makers Mark. Decadent? Yes. If you want to get truly adventurous, I’ve eaten insects (ants and grasshoppers) with my bourbon. The nutty, citrus notes go well with the flavour profile of the Bourbon.

Quo Vadis Reopens Charm and character aplenty in this exclusive eaterie I have to admit, I was slightly nervous to revisit Quo Vadis after it’s brief hiatus this summer. The Dean Street behemoth hadn’t made a penny for the Hart Brothers since 2008 and an expired lease at their Michelin Star tapas bar Barrafina gave them an opportunity to wedge it into the vast Quo Vadis ground floor. Quo Vadis itself has now downsized to only six tables in what was once just the bar area Sitting down with a QV Negroni, I soon realised that nothing has changed apart from the shrinkage of the room. The playfully illustrated menu still features chef Jeremy Lee’s famous Smoked Eel Sandwich, smothered in blow-your-head-off horseradish and wedged in between crispy fried bread. Proper ballsy stuff. Baked Salsify is another Lee classic, which transforms the little-know root vegetable into a decadent present, brushed in butter, rolled in parmesan and gift-wrapped in filo pastry. Onglet with pickled walnut, watercress and horseradish was perfectly pink and punchy for an autumnal main. For pudding, the chocolate and almond prune was as rich and hedonistic as an F. Scott Fitzgerald character. This was, of course, all interrupted by the Scottish chef ’s customary turn about the dining room to wish all of his darling customers a good evening, a tradition I wish more chefs would still pay homage to. What Quo Vadis has lost in size, they have gained in exclusivity and I would definitely recommend membership to take advantage of the larger dining area in the luxurious club upstairs, and maybe some kisses from Jeremy. quovadissoho.co.uk

Dine high in the Asiatic Oasis Everyone enjoys Chinese cuisine, perhaps not the entire menu but we can all locate something it offers that has a positive on our palette. The perfect place to eat it however can be trickier to find, I think I might however have found one, and I’ll let you into my secret. Step out of the lift on level 32, I was ready for my first experience dining in The Shard. Developer Irvine Sellar set out to design an architecturally striking vertical city that would help to build a diverse vibrant community, which is depicted by the types of restaurants on offer. With this as our backdrop, our expectations were high. Hutong offers a small private dining experience, and the interior is so superb that if it were not for the breath-taking views of some of the capitals most iconic buildings you could transport yourself Northern China with all its rustic furniture and traditional lanterns lain on every table. There are a limited number of tables on offer, but this ensures that everyone can enjoy the breathtaking view of London, even on a miserable day. The service could not be faulted. I like attentive yet relaxed and this is exactly what I received – Perfect. The set lunch menu explains what you will be receiving; however the description does not do justice to the exquisite food I was presented with. Before we tasted, their sommelier appeared to choose some wine for us – Fleur de Lotus, Domain Josmeyer, Alsace, a dry but flowery wine created

- 79 -

to emphasise the harmony of Asiatic spices. My guest, a rare drinker of wine, enjoyed the bottle with me and proved the sommelier knew her facts; it was the perfect accompaniment to the array of flavours. First to arrive at our table was a bowl of monkfish and enoki mushroom soup, simple, elegant and the perfect opener to our initiation into real Chinese cuisine. Following this were four beautifully presented vibrant dumplings; scallop and kai lan, vegetable and bamboo pith, xo sauce crystal prawn and ma la Chilean sea bass and shrimp, complemented with chilli sauce and balsamic vinegar on the side. Piece of advice… the chilli sauce is not for the faint hearted! The main course proved to demonstrate the intricacy and aromatic flavours of Chinese food. A plate of delicately wok-fried kai lan (Chinese broccoli) in a ginger sauce – which is sure to become my new favourite green, a spicy dish of guaiwei prawn and cuttlefish and yangtze chicken with string beans, king oyster mushrooms and soy to sit on crisp lettuce cups. To end we both chose the special: a cheesecakelike treat, mango flavoured on top of a light biscuit base with coconut ice cream on top. It was a great finale – light and tasty. The view was impressive enough, the food knocked it out of the park. hutong.co.uk

Mixing it Up Discover cocktail secrets in the basement bar and take a look through the mixologists book and recreate some of its ambience at home. - 83 -

Over the last few years a new generation of mixologists have helped the London bar scene undergo a huge renaissance, an overhaul that was well overdue, menus have had what can only be called massive refits. One of those at the forefront has been Oskar Kinberg. Having spent the last four or so years at the helm of Oskar’s Bar (downstairs at Michelinstar restaurant Dabbous) he is unleashing some of his secrets. Over seventy brilliantly creative cocktail recipes, each one invented and tested at his destination drinking den, Oskar also lifts the lid on how to create bar ingredients – From nettle cordial and olive oil-infused gin to kiwi and avocado purée. You’ll find cocktail of all shapes and sizes inside, each a real measure of Oskars intimate knowledge of flavour combinations. We’ve tried the Peas & Mint, a seriously refreshing mix of gin, Cocchi Americano, fresh lemon, pea shoots & mint, shaken together and then served straight up – An absolute taste sensation. Oskar enjoys the credit of introducing London to the delights of beer cocktails with Cocktail Cookbook featuring his Beer Grylls - white rum, banana liqueur, fresh lime juice & honey syrup topped with wheat beer - or, as the man himself likes to describe it, “shandy on steroids”. So buy the book, take a trip down to the bar, book a table upstairs – Whichever order you decide to partake you’ll be glad you did.

What a catch Against the traditional backdrop of Portobello market this Sushi spot is establishing itself with a worthy reputation right across the capital By Shaun Prince

- 84 -

Ukai (oo-kaaee) is the ancient tradition of catching fish using cormorants. That single quiz worthy fact is very likely to stay safely stored in the grey matter if you pay this sushi serving spot a visit, but you really don’t need any incentive to go. Upon our visit the founder and hugely talented Ian Bell, founder of Ukai in 2006, we took our places and offeried our first entry into the extensive food menu, the starters began to arrive and the first bite of the rock shrimp tempura with spicy mayo, told me we were in for a real treat, the invited people offering their thanks for taking them along, a couple of bites in! Over the next hour we were presented with dish after dish of extraordinary food, an absolute feast of fresh ingredients cooked to absolute perfection - black cod, pan fried seabass, tuna tartare, scallops and the list goes on, and on. The Kampachi Salad, crispy chilli squid and the Beef Kushiyaki were all stand-out for me from what was an altogether outstanding eating experience – it would be fair to say it was some of the best Japanese food we’ve ever had. I’ve been back three times in the past month and if Japanese is on your radar then Ukai will very much hit the spot. Excellent food, knowledgeable and spot on service, this place lacks nothing – Well, apart from a fish catching avian display team.

Members only Bang in the heart of the West end this members club is a real oasis. Well worth a read.

T

his intimate hotel and private members club is just tucked away off Trafalgar Square bang in the heart of London’s west end. Combining old world glamour and sophistication the designers have managed to subtly blast this place with modern hints and we love it. Inside you’ll find zero pomp you may have encountered at more traditional members only places in the capital, this one is laid back yes but you do still feel that exclusivity too. Of course there are books, a lot of them, all by the owner’s favourite authors and a fair few titles you grew up with, it all adds to the library look. Inside you’ve St. Luke’s Kitchen restaurant with a dedicated wine and whisky tasting room and the stately Room Seven with a vintage oak boardroom table. The venue features a spectacular member’s club lounge – with

a double mezzanine, stage and four-metre floor-to-ceiling bar with a drinks selection that’ll keep you there a while. Singer Kelis, the iconic Faithless, jazz notable Roy Ayers, Soul Diva Angie Stone and dance experimentalist Sebastien Tellier have played live on the members’ club stage. They’ve five bedrooms, simply stunning, offering a perfect bolthole from the West End madness with complete privacy courtesy of sheer curtains and black-out blinds. he guys behind Boujis, Raffles and Mahiki have opened up this splendid joint Albert’s just a couple of months back and it is already enjoying enormous success. Located on the Old Brompton Road, it takes its name from Prince Albert and the fact that that area of London is nicknamed The Albertropolis due to the landmarks that bear his name. Bringing a touch of old-world glamour to London it is home to a mahogany wood panelled whisky and martini bar, a place which historic and unique spirits call home, including a whisky from 1819 and one from 1861, the year of Prince Albert’s birth. The interior is a marvel, Colefax and Fowler have created the wallpapers; the staircase features Balmoral tartan and you’ll find Prince Albert’s

love letters to Queen Victoria, a nod to the romance and heritage at this clubs core. Alessio Piras heads up the kitchen, serving up a menu which brings together classics and new favourites, think steak tartare prepared in front of you with white truffles from Alba. If you’re looking to host a private dinner or party then you can make the most of the private dining room. Helping them out is a committee that brings together, fashion, food and film; the likes of Jodie Kidd, Sam Sangster, Piers and Henry Beckwith, Roger Daltrey CBE and Eddie Spencer Churchill. Performances from internationally renowned artists and world famous DJ’s are on their way. Give them a shout and pop down, you’ll be rather glad you did. albertsclub.com

Vintage on the outside, cutting edge on the inside, the latest and greatest audio kit ensures nostalgia doesn’t negate ‘up to date’. By James Day

If David Bowie taught us anything it’s that visual reinvention can keep you timeless, with the Starman’s dramatic changes of appearance ensuring he remained ahead of the game right until the end. Audio tech is arguably the opposite, where constantly updated innards married with iconic external design will keep you hunky dory. Step forward brands like Bang & Olufsen, Technics and Ruark Audio – masters of the reverse-Bowie.

1 VPI Prime The VPI Prime – or should that be VIP given it’s shaped like a bow tie? – has been dubbed a ‘superdeck’ because it follows the same criteria as a supercar – throw the rule book out the window and avoid design compromises at any cost. However, don’t let the audacious appearance fool you, because the beauty of the Prime is in it’s simplicity. This is a record player that does nothing out of the ordinary operation-wise, yet the end result is a spellbinding sound full of intricate detail and warmth. The curved MDF chassis is reinforced with a 3mm steel plate and includes a mammoth 24-pole AC motor, which ensures that just like 70s prog rock, it’s heavy, man. £4,000 renaissanceaudio.co.uk

PrimaLuna ProLogue Premium CD Player While we’ve been waxing lyrical about the enchantment of the vinyl renaissance, the much maligned CD has been unceremoniously reduced to a ready supply of drinks coasters. Odds are, though, that a large chunk of your digital music collection remains on disc and sounds better than the downloadable or streamed alternative. Celebrate your CDs, make playing them a goddam occasion, with the outrageous ProLogue Premium from PrimaLuna? This glorious combination of old and new tech is not only valve-powered, but two triode vacuum tubes at the centre of the digital circuitry reduce internal interference and increase organic sound output. Plus there’s a USB input just in case anyway. £2,950 hifilounge.co.uk

Technics means more than discerning DJ decks and bomber jackets these days (albeit still available on Amazon). As part of the impeccable Reference Class R1 Series of hi-fi components that announced the brand’s comeback, is the wallet-watering SE-R1 Power Amplifier, flaunting modern digital amplifier technology in a minimalist frame and featuring old school power meters. Our favourite bit of wizardry? Looking like the lovechild of the VPI Prime and Ruark R7, the LP160 is an all-in-one loudspeaker with a hidden turntable and extensive wireless streaming. Conceived in La Boite’s Basque country laboratory in France, the LP160 caught my eye at the recent Maison & Objet design show in Paris thanks to a gorgeous mix of wood and aluminum, and an epic orchestral sound that took three years to develop. The LP160 also doubles as a desk when the turntable cover is closed thanks to an anti-vibration leather laptop plate on top. Aston’s new generation The arrival of a new Aston is never anything short of special but this one marks a new era. While James Bond got the DB10 just to himself, Aston has finally unveiled its much-anticipated DB11. More than just a model upgrade, the new DB11 is the first car in Aston’s bold new ‘Second Century’ plan and births a new platform that will underpin a raft of future models including an SUV. At the heart of the new car is a 5.2 litre V12 putting a nice round 600bhp through to the rear wheels via a ZF auto gearbox. Performance figures promise 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 200mph. The design of the DB11 takes traditional Aston visual cues and pushes them to the extreme. The nose is sharper, the headlights stretch back

Continentcrusher

into the wings and silver roof struts float above gloss black panel details. Smart aero dynamics include an ‘aero blade’ spoiler that channels air through vents to the rear of the car to create downforce without having a physical spoiler to spoils the car’s sleek lines. The DB11 is a car that Aston hopes will put them at the forefront of performance and technology. Customers should start receiving cars at the end of 2016 and prices will begin at £154,900.

Small is beautiful Tempus was wowed by many cars at the New York Motor Show but the star was universally acknowledged to be something away from the traditional luxury marques. Mazda’s MX-5 is one of the finest driving cars on sale and the company took the opportunity to unveil a new folding hard-top version that promises it will now also be one of the prettiest cars on the road. Channeling the spirit of classic 60s roadsters, the MX-5 RF (‘retractable fastback’) has daring buttresses forming the roof at the rear and a Targa-style top that automatically stows neatly away. It also boasts an interior that would embarrass cars four times its price. The MX-5 RF is a playful indulgence that won’t disappoint on any level.

Ferrari’s ‘family’ four-seater GT, the FF, raised eyebrows when it launched in 2011 but it’s gone on to earn its place at the toptable. Now a refresh has arrived with a new name – the GTC4 Lusso. Pitched into the traditional shooting break space, the four-wheel-drive (and now four-wheel-steer) Ferrari still stands out among the line-up as the most practical way to enjoy Ferrari ownership. It’s aimed very much at those wanting something special to get them to the slopes with full ski gear. As well as fine-tuning the mechanicals, the GTC4 Lusso gets a fresh look. There are new headlights from the recent 488 GTB and now four circular lights at the rear – a nod to classic Ferraris of the past. The updated infotainment system has an expanded 10.25” screen and power is boosted from 651bhp to 680bhp meaning 0-62mph in 3.4sec and a top speed of 206mph. Prices will be around £230,000.

Super

T

he rise of the SUV is an automotive story without compare. From estates to limos, all models before it are being sucked in and transformed into a 4x4 box like some kind of alien automotive black hole. And now it’s the turn of the supercar. Unthinkable a few years ago, the super SUV is now firmly a thing and Range Rover, as the company that invented the luxury off-roader, are staking a claim for this Sport SVR to be the most super of the super SUVs. The standard Range Rover Sport is no slouch. One of the finest cars on the road, its combination of practicality, off-road ability, driving manners and luxury feel is unparalleled. But this new version has taken all that to a very special place. That place is the SVR Studios at Jaguar Land Rover. SVR is a new label from JLR that seeks to produce extreme performance versions of regular cars for limited runs. There are exterior and interior tweaks a plenty to define an SVR Sport, such as special sports seats, as you would expect from a near £100k super SUV, but it’s the road engineering that defines this car. The SVR packs the range-topping 5.0 litre petrol V8 with an extra power output to 542bhp. The chassis and the suspension have also been upgraded for extra responsiveness and an active exhaust added. The changes make the SVR capable of 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 162 mph. For a car that weighs 2335kg, it’s nothing short of extraordinary. There’s a moment in the SVR when you’re almost seduced into thinking you’re in a standard SUV, a kind of calm before the storm. It’s a moment to savour when you know of the coming apocalypse. Just drop your right foot to the floor and all hell breaks loose. This is, let’s not forget, a car weighing well over two tonnes that Newton has told us wants to remain at exactly where it’s at. To get that weight to accelerate forward takes a breath-taking amount of physics. A whole 680 Nm of torque is unleashed through the 8-speed auto gearbox to

- 103 -

- d r i v en -

all four wheels and the Sport simply disregards the world around it and hurtles forward at a rate that defines belief. It’s an event so thrilling that you can’t help but go back again and again to savour. Traffic lights become fanciful starting gates, overtaking opportunities tease you on winding roads. This is a car that will challenge a Porsche 911 for performance but happily take four adults and their weekend baggage through forests, snow and sand dunes to get to your place in the country. (Probably some other country.) But choose to cruise round the city and the car will also calmly drift, closeting you from the dramas of the outside world.

The more you look at the Range Rover Sport SVR, the less it seems to make sense. Here is a car that should not exist by any reasonable measure of what’s right and yet here it is being brilliant at everything and doing so with tie-straightening style. As a car tester you’re simply forced to ask yourself, has any car ever been produced that excels so completely at every task that could ever be levelled at it? Yes, we’ll grant you, it could be more economical, but if you’re looking for those sorts of figures you’re looking in the wrong place. Living with the Range Rover Sport SVR you are left with the feeling of a bar being raised, a duelling glove dropped to the rest of the world. It’s a magnificent beast. Long may it reign.

Electric dreams?

- 106 -

- d r i v en -

T

By Conor McNicholas

he modern world presents us with many dilemmas. A new one to add to the list is electric vs internal combustion power - never more acute then when you’re shopping for your next supercar. Virtually since the birth of the automobile the dream of any petrol-head has been to have to biggest, most powerful internal combustion power unit money could buy. But the realisation of efficient battery technology has changed he rules of the game. Now, blistering performance is available instantly at the touch of a button, no sparkplugs needed. But in the jump to electric power, have we lost something? The noise, the organic energy? Have we lost the horses in the race for horsepower? To explore the tensions of the modern sports car you can’t do better than to pitch a Ferrari

- 107 -

against an electric supercar. We ran a drop-top California T back-to-back with a BMW i8 and sought out long drags, winding country roads and tunnel noise. The California is powered by a newly bi-turbocharged rumbling 3.9 litre V8. In contrast the BMW takes its power from a combination of an in-line three cylinder 1.5 litre combustion engine (that you’ll find in the current Mini) and hearty 7.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. That gives the Ferrari 552bhp, a 0-60 time of 3.6sec and a 196mph top speed. The BMW gets 357bhp, 4.4sec 0-60 and a limited 155mph top speed. On paper then, the Ferrari monsters it. But there’s a drama about the i8 that seduces you. From the scissor doors to the extravagantly sculpted exterior, this is a car majoring on visual impact.

- d r i v en -

- 108 -

- d r i v en -

Put your foot down and you’ll experience power and handling to thrill. But you can’t escape the knowledge that the throaty roar of the engine is being artificially delivered through the car’s internal speakers. The Ferrari, however is all real. Dial up the V8 with the hood down through a tunnel and you know the noise that encompasses has been tuned by Maranello’s finest. This is a car that will flatter you with it’s handling and poise but it’s still a beast

- 109 -

to be tamed on an open road. A like-for-like comparison proves impossible. The California is real organic power from your foot to the tarmac and that direct purity is always beguiling. But the i8 proves that driving joy is taking on new dimensions and kerb-side drama and future tech can make up a lot for smaller engine capacity and a fat battery pack. The supercar battle of the future promises to be a fascinating contest.

omething felt not quite right. As we crept downstairs we, at first blamed the rum that had been liberally drunk the evening before, or perhaps our heightened awareness was merely a symptom of jet lag. Our villa felt somehow different. We examined the evidence. A patio door was slightly ajar allowing drapes to billow as warn air entered the lounge. A fruit bowl had been over-turned and the contents of a box of cereal were left strewn across the kitchen. The culprits’ identity was soon discovered – the polished marble kitchen counters revealed footprints (or were they handprints) and banana skins littered the pool-side terrace. “Dem monkey rascals” was the conclusion of our housekeeper, who laughed off – and cleared up the slight disarray left by our primateburglars who had indeed taken advantage of the fact we’d left the doors open the night before. And who could blame the island’s famous green monkeys from wanting to share our slice of heaven. From their usual hang out in the shade of the palm trees at the Royal Westmoreland Resort, they must have often witnessed homeowners and visitors lapping up the pure luxury and best of what Barbados has to offer.

And if you yearn for the sea, the properties are a stone’s throw from arguably the finest beach on the island. Just down the hillside, Mullins Bay with it’s inviting warm waters and pristine beach has private loungers and for residents and there’s a private beach bar where they can enjoy a local cocktail and catch up with neighbours. By far One of the best ways to see West and South coastlines are by catamaran and Cool Runnings Catamaran Cruise offers a fabulous morning cruise with the chance to snorkel with turtles and the abundance of brightly coloured fish. There’s a fabulous lunch, the bar is open all day and, on the way home, the music is turned up and the crew can put on quite a dance show if encouraged (coolrunningsbarbados.com) And for restaurants the west coast of the island is awash with them. Perhaps the island’s most famous is the Cliff with its theatrical torch lit decks.

Perched above an idyllic cove where stingrays swim in the floodlit water, the cuisine is divine with service and a wine list to match. It’s more casual sister opened in the summer of 2015. Right next door to The Cliff, The Cliff Beach Club also boast an amphitheatre-like four levels, and facing out to sea and there’s live music a few nights a week. The island offers something for everyone and while I’ve visited a few times in the past I’ve always stayed in hotels, rather than staying in a residence. Financially the figures also make sense if you’re looking for a holiday home that’s also an investment. Part of the British Commonwealth, investing in Barbados’ property has clear advantages such as the stable currency, favourable tax laws and a British justice system. And the market remains buoyant with Barbados weathering the global recession well, fighting back with improved infrastructure, well managed beaches new upmarket restaurant and shop openings. All details of course lost on the island’s friendly green monkey population. They’re the lucky ones who get to experience the island year-round for free – and, when the occasional homeowner leaves a door ajar, there’s also free fruit and cereal.
