Santa Train
& The Magic Village in the Mill Field
I
t was a rather frosty November night last year, while making his way home to the North Pole, Santa who had been practicing high speed roof landing manoeuvres with his new Sleigh, noticed his pouch of magic-flying-reindeer dust was not closed tightly. At that moment as he took his reindeerthrough an 820 degree loop at 500 miles per hour, out of his magic pouch streamed the special dust made from millions of Christmas dreams & wishes.
Santa had been flying over the Mill Field which sits beside Amber Park in the Amber Springs Hotel. As Santa flipped his sleigh back to normal flight mode he watched as, far below in the Mill Field an enchanted village of peculiar looking houses began to grow up from the ground as if they were plants springing through the soil. As each house popped up Santa saw a flickering candle light appearing in the icy windows and what looked like very brightly dressed little people tottering about this new little village. Now Santa had never seen anything like this before and not having any of these houses or people on his list he had to get a closer look. Santa took the sleigh down to 1500 feet and hovered over the village and as he did this he realized that these houses were North Pole houses & the people were elves! The magic dust from his pouch must have reacted with the Wexford Soil and created this new world behind the Amber Springs. Happy to see his faithful elves Santa landed his Sleigh in the middle of the village. All the elves were so excited to see Santa. Every last elf came out to welcome the red suited visitor. Santa went around visiting all the houses and meeting all the elves enjoying cups of piping hot chocolate, chocolate covered marshmallows and stacks of other sweet treats. When he got to the last house he was surprised that it was empty. Enquiring about the inhabitants the Head Elf told Santa that this would be his house any time he wanted to visit. Santa was so happy to be told this he promised to return every year and spend lots of time with his new family of elves. He even said he would bring along some friends including Mrs Claus because he would miss her too much. Most importantly Santa promised to bring lots of presents for all the really good children who could come and visit him in his new Christmas village in the Mill Field. Santa Claus will be Meeting Children in his magical new village in the Mill Field this December. Tickets will very soon be available from the Amber Springs Hotel 053 9484000. It promises to be a wonderful family day out for all ages.
Redmond Farm Newsletter
T
he concept of producing a food product to give a better quality and consistency to the kitchen is not a new one, but it is the most common under used ethos in most food establishments. The fundamentals of food products must be revived and followed by the mantra of better cooking practices and back to the basics. At Redmond farm the Angus Heifer Herd is the key source of quality beef for both the Amber Springs and Ashdown Park Hotels going forward and with the added introduction of our Vegetable garden and two 40 meter tunnels, we hope to give a good supply of Beef, Vegetables and Fresh Salad products. We are trying to create a seasonal garden with a lot of various small leaf salads throughout the year and Vegetables grown seasonally. With the beef products we have set aside a cold room to hang and dry age our strip loins, fillets and wing ribs. The process takes between 14 and 21 days after slaughter in a controlled environment. The fillets need very little hanging whereas the strip loins and ribs need the 21 day ageing. To make sure we have full traceability, we stamp our processed cattle with our R stamp and trace it from farm to fork.

History of Gorey The historic Market House which is on Main Street Gorey, is a Victorian style building which is now the local government administrative centre and houses the unique chiming clock. This old 18th century building was rebuilt in 1709 and is currently used as the meeting place for the Gorey Town Commissioners. It is also the location of the Gorey Tourist Office. During the 1798 insurrection prisoners were held here. The building is listed as a place of regional historic interest. The historic Market House which is on Main Street Gorey, is a Victorian style building which is now the local government administrative centre and houses the unique chiming clock. This old 18th century building was rebuilt in 1709 and is currently used as the meeting place for the Gorey Town Commissioners. It is also the location of the North Wexford Tourist Office. During the 1798 insurrection prisoners were held here. The building is listed as a place of regional historic interest. The street has many old fashioned shop-fronts - Browne’s Pub, Myles Doyle, Hughie Doyle’s, French’s Premier House and McGoverns Lounge are among the shop-fronts listed for protection. Take note of the Eco Restaurant whose fine premises are protected for regional interest. At the top of the Main Street is the Court House. Built in 1819, it was burned down in 1922 but was rebuilt shortly afterwards. Beside the Court House is the Church of Ireland. Christ Church was erected in 1861, and boasts some magnificent stained glass windows. The structure of the Church with its tower is beautiful and this is highlighted when it is illuminated at night. The Church is listed for preservation for the national interest. Beside Christ Church is the old Erasmus Smith School House. Built in 1834, the architecture is worth noting; it is now the Social Services Centre. If you travel on up the street, you will see The Monument of the 1798 insurrection, with its cannons facing down the Main Street. These guns are an added feature of recent years. In the Market Square, Gorey’s designated casual trading area, you will find the Methodist Church. Built in 1834, it’s the towns oldest church. Also in the Market Square is the Old Cemetery where the remains of Bishop Thomas Ram are buried, who’s family were responsible for Gorey’s fine layout. The location of the Irish Permanent offices on the Main street was the site of Bishop Ram’s Palace, which was built about 1620, but has long since gone. It was Bishop Thomas Ram who constituted a corporate town under a charter dated 19th October 1619 called The Town of Newborough. This was the foundation of Gorey, although there was a nucleus of a town here since 1296. The Ram family determined the Administration of Gorey affairs for three centuries. Looking down Rafter Street, you can see Rynvanney House, built in 1814 which was a former R.I.C. Barrack and a nursing home. Ashdown park, Wexford

History of Gorey The third church in Gorey is located on Saint Michael’s Road at the bottom of the Main Street. Saint Michael’s Church is a beautiful and spacious structure, distinguished by its massive square tower. The Church was designed by the famous Pugin. About half a mile from the town, Clonattin has a burial ground dating back to the fifth century and the remains of a small monastic church are still evident. Due to the cholera outbreaks during and after the famine it is recorded that many of the paupers who died were brought from the old Gorey union workhouse and buried in communal graves at Clonattin. Some old workhouse buildings still stand in Ramstown, also the site of Gorey Leather Factory (1936 - 1979). The beautiful entrance hall of the old work-house has recently been restored as a dwelling house and Gorey business park is now located on the remaining site. Also in the district is the home of the notorious Hunter Gowan at Mount Nebo, as it was then called. It was later re-christened Mount Saint Benedict as the Benedictines founded a college there where many of our former politicians were educated. The college closed in the early 1920’s

Nostalgia Talking of times past ...... North Wexford has always been a holiday and “out of town” destination for Dubliners and further afield. Many people have fond memories of Gorey and Courtown, its characters, streetscape and its place in their past. That probably explains just why so many people who visited here in the past, come back, time and time again with many settling here full time. Nostalgia is not the sole preserve of the tourist, many of us wistfully look back at olden times with great fondness. Nostalgia is a potent force in all our lives as the rosy glow of the past leaves us all in much, much better form.

Owner Marian’s sharp and impressively diverse buying skills are well known and she goes that extra mile to bring her clients the best in style and choice each season. Set over two floors and stocking 68 Irish & International labels in sizes 10-24, this is one shop that never fails to impress. Whether it’s the perfect statement dress, a once in a lifetime special occasion outfit, stylish trousers or that perfect pair of shoes, La Crème has the stock to satisfy. Trends and Style Tips At La Crème Boutique, we take your style seriously. Marian McKenna, proprietor, and our staff have invaluable expertise and training in dressing various body shapes to accentuate and highlight a customer’s best features, while detracting from those areas we dislike. Marian’s own style is quirky, different, colourful and fun and she is a natural when it comes to dressing people with less than perfect body shapes. We have also trained and worked with The Style Personality, which works with the principle of each person having an individual taste in fashion, clothes and styling. This ensures you leave the shop feeling comfortable and confident and looking truly wonderful. Our style tips will help you to choose the best look for your figure on that special occasion. General Style Tips • Pleasing yourself is a rule number one. If you feel great in what you are wearing, that positive feeling will radiate out. Wear a good bra that is properly fitted before you chose your outfit. • Women are often more concerned about what size is on the label than how well the clothes actually look in the mirror. Sometimes going up one size can visually make you look two sizes smaller. • Nobody has the perfect body and there are many ways of disguising specific areas that you would rather not show. If you have great legs, be sure to show them but compensate by bringing your neckline up. • Empire line dresses are great for those of us trying to hide a tummy. If you have a great waist but bigger hips, go for the prom dress-style nipped in at the waist and flowing loosely over the hips. • A ‘V-neck’ is always better if you have a large bust. Introduce some classic pieces into your wardrobe. Items that transcend the seasons such as a jacket that can be worn with white linen in Summer but works equally good with black in Winter. • If you are self conscious about your arms, think three quarter or chiffon sleeves. • Use our expertise when shopping. We have the tips and tricks to make a difference. • The right shoe is vital to complete the overall look, while the wrong shoes can ruin an outfit. Buy a shoe with a heel you can walk in comfortably for a realistic period of time. Renowned for their expertise and attention to detail, incredible customer service, honesty and friendliness stand out at La Crème Boutique. Arts & Culture If you are looking for a vibrant artistic community, look no further than North Wexford and Gorey – its artistic hub. Whether you are looking for links to the past from the architecture of its most historic buildings including St. Michaels, etc. to the Fringe Summer Festival or Gorey Little Theatre – Gorey has a world of Arts second to none. Gorey Little Theatre has developed a purpose built Theatre on Pearse Street. Being home to the Gorey Musical Society it also stages the Summer Play during July and August in addition to hosting the Drama Festival each year. Live Opera performances are offered on the big screen with a full season on offer from movies@gorey if that floats your boat. North Wexford also has a very active Art Circle and they annually exhibit. A recent innovation in the Art World has been the development of Gorey School of Art. Recognised both nationally and internationally, Gorey School of Art is at the forefront of the development of the arts in Gorey. Gorey School of Art has been offering quality education programmes for over a decade with its FETAC education course provider, Gorey Community School. With its full-time courses based in the Gorey Business Park in Ramstown, Gorey School of Art now offers qualifications at various levels, with active plans for a new third level degree being progressed. Outside of these respected courses, GSA is also actively developing an annual exhibition programme. Couple this with its existing artist residency programme, free public seminars/ workshops and plans for a creative kids clubs, GSA will certainly get your creativity juices flowing. With the house of story telling at Ar mBreacha in Ballyduff and an active Photo Club the Arts is very much alive. Hopes are high that the historic Market House, which is currently vacant will be developed as a centre for the arts over the coming years. It is the focal point of the Gorey Market House Craft and Design Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend with a focus on quality national and international craft workers and designers. Using the Civic Offices and VEC premises on the Avenue to stage some of the exhibitions the festival is recognized by the Craft Council of Ireland. Of course it isn’t only just exhibitions as the Town buzzes with activities for all the family. Amber Springs, Wexford 41

Fishing Sea Angling in North Wexford The village of Cahore in North Wexford has over the years, earned a reputation for being the premier venue for Sea Angling on the East Coast of Ireland. This achievement is due to large stocks of fish and the vast variety of specimen fish recorded off the Cahore coast. Cahore itself is a great competition venue with annual events being held for members of the Irish Federation of sea Anglers. Indeed many of the top anglers in the country fish from Cahore. Other noted areas along the coast are Courtown and Castletown. The most popular types of fish caught along this coast are toperays, smooth hound, bull huss, sper-dogs and bass, while the recommended baits to use are mackerel, herring or ragworm
Shore Angling in North Wexford For shore anglers the North Wexford coast line stretching from Castletown to Morriscastle has numerous beaches, all of which are very accessible by road and have proven to be very popular beaches for catching specimen fish such as bass, while the recommended bait to use is crab, lugworm or ragworm. The Wexford Coastal Path
An Sli Charman, Wexford County Council If you are an energetic walker and would also like a chance to see most of the beaches mentioned in our beach guide, why not follow An Sli Charman which takes in most of them. An Sli Charman, the Wexford Coastal Path, was established in 1993 by Wexford County Council. An Sli (The path) extends for 221 kilometres from Kilmichael point in the North East corner of County Wexford to Ballyhack, a picturesque village in the South West of our county. Along the way you will encounter sandy beaches, eroding clay cliffs, durable rocky headlands, areas of exceptional natural beauty and interest, historic towns and monuments. Sli Charman is indicated along the path by signs bearing the “Man on Water symbol. Information signs at various points along the path carry maps of the area and describe the main points of interest along that section of the walk. Leading off over the headland at Kilmicheal Point, An Sli crosses Clones Strand, around the foot of Tara Hill and along the North Strand at Courtown. The high, soft claycliffs which first appear at Ardamine are a continous feature of the walk southwards through Cahore Point and Blackwater head to Ballinesker. WARNING: Sli Charman brings you as close as possible to the shoreline. You may have to walk along steeped, narrow paths, over rocks, across streams, over stiles, along narrow streches of shoreline. Always have respect for the power of nature - rocks may shift, streams may flow in spate, sea waves may surge unexpectedly.

Additional support is from the Gorey Town Council to re-engage with the domestic and international audiences and place Gorey as a “must visit” destination. There will also be an online commercial business directory which will give each participating business the opportunity to have a full page web promotion allowing them to reflect the best their business has to offer. At the top tier of the directory businesses will also be able to link to their own sites, encourage bookings and provide real time news updates. “As locals we know the richness of activities that Gorey, Ferns, Courtown etc has to offer, however our view is that many visitors stay in self-catering, guest houses or local hotels and don’t venture outside of the beach and accommodation circle. We want to encourage new visitors and entice repeat visitors to not alone enjoy everything we have to offer on and by the sea but to explore the richness of our historic sites, embark on our coastal & inland walks; discover an array of mouth-watering restaurants and cafes and fill up their homes and wardrobes by visiting the fashion boutiques, food and craft shops” said David Minogue, Gorey Town Council.
