by Bernhard Kellner and Hendrik teNeues
It is a pleasure to introduce our Autumn Program 2019, focused on planet Earth in all its facets. The World by renowned photographer Michael Poliza is a weighty publication available in two special and one collector’s edition, showing the beauty of our planet from a very personal perspective. The XXL format book presents previously unpublished pictures from Poliza’s travels around the globe. The first 500 numbered copies come as a signed collector’s edition, complete with an original Michael Poliza print. In Heroes of the Sea—A Marine Journey with the Protectors of our Great Oceans, York Hovest accompanies those acting and campaigning to protect our oceans, both above and below water. The result is a fascinating work of breathtaking ocean photography as well as a startling document of the grave threats to our largely “blue” planet. The world’s most distinguished wildlife photographer, Pedro Jarque Krebs, also shows the fragility of the natural world in Fragile: a uniquely beautiful, painterly, and moving portrait of wildlife around the world. Water—A Journey through the Element is the result of 17 years of work during which photographer Rudi Sebastian explored the essential substance of water. The result is a truly unique book, filled with amazing images of water in all its diverse forms and locations, enriched by a wealth of facts and information about this life-sustaining compound.
pictures and expert contributions from biologist Gunther Willinger, this is an instructive overview of the planet’s green lungs—from the boreal forest to the Amazon tropics. Dutch native Pie Aerts is regarded as a shooting star of the photography scene. Suspenseful animal photography and personal portraits of people he encounters on his travels characterize his work. Tales from the Roads Less Traveled is the Instagrammer’s first illustrated book, taking readers along on his journeys to beautiful corners around the globe. From landscape and wildlife to the body’s beauty, Stefan Rappo’s nude photography is an extraordinary balancing act between distance and intimacy. With a foreword from his former mentor Peter Lindbergh, Nude presents Rappo’s most successful and striking images of the female form. Driven by the belief that art and beauty transforms how people think about conservation and nature, Argentinian photographer Guadalupe Laiz undertook an extraordinary, 5-year photographic project to capture and celebrate the pastoral beauty and pure grace of the unique and magnificent horses of Iceland in their natural habitat. At over 350 pages, the Horses of Iceland is a stunning and vivid photography book providing inspiring and thrilling glimpses of these beloved creatures in the dramatic backdrop of their native Iceland. Thank you for your interest in our autumn editions!

HEROES OF THE SEA
A MARINE JOURNEY WITH THE PROTECTORS OF OUR GREAT OCEANS
“A unique portrait of our oceans in all their beauty, fascination, and power—but also their immense problems, which we urgently need to face.” York Hovest
PHOTOGR APHY
HEROES OF THE SEA Humankind has always been fascinated by the magic of the ocean, its power and unpredictability. The open sea awakens a desire to set forth and sail, but also the urge to step back in awe and fear. Today, however, our oceans are more threatened than ever before. Worldwide plastic waste pollution and industrial fishing threaten the existence of countless ocean species. Global warming and the resulting climate change are leading to ever greater damage of the marine ecosystem. York Hovest, a photographer, adventurer, and author, has set himself the task of countering this development. The regular National Geographic contributor has joined “heroes of the seas”—scientists, activists, and visionaries—around the globe to explore and document the most inventive solutions and promising projects to save our oceans. In parallel to a rich documentary film, this book charts Hovest’s journey to help save the seas, capturing the beauty of the ocean as well as its extreme fragility. Hovest’s pictures span the azure blue seas of the South Seas to the cold waters around the Arctic Circle. They show whales, sharks, and colorful reef inhabitants in their natural habitat. In breathtaking splendor and scope, they remind us of the immense diversity and beauty of marine life and urge us to protect the abundant life forms for whom the ocean is home.

In his two great books, Africa and Eyes over Africa, as well as his single volumes on South Africa, Kenya, and Namibia, Poliza opened our eyes to the diversity of the African continent. In AntArctic, the WWF ambassador created a sensitive double portrait of the polar regions. And in his characteristic aerial photographs, he even opened up new perspectives on well-known places like Mallorca. In this new limited edition, The World, Poliza opens his digital treasure chest to reveal previously unpublished images from all seven continents. Like a true photographic world tour, we travel with him to Australia and New Zealand, to Vietnam and Myanmar, to the west of the USA and north to Canada, to the Galapagos Islands and Bolivia, across the Antarctic and the many lands of Africa. No matter how different the regions he explores, the photographer always captures extraordinary images, instilling both the beauty of our planet and an urgent need to protect the natural world. Life has always shown Michael Poliza new paths: from actor to entrepreneur, from professional photographer to travel designer. After a career in the IT industry, Poliza launched a three-year multimedia expedition on a ship around the world. In 2002, he settled in Cape Town, traveled across Africa, and quickly became a worldrenowned nature and landscape photographer. When he is not out and about, he lives in Hamburg, from where he organizes adventure trips with Michael Poliza Private Travel. The World is the WWF ambassador’s tenth book with teNeues. Sophy Roberts is an award-winning writer based in West Dorset, England. She holds two degrees from Oxford University, and an MSc in Journalism from Columbia University.

LIONS
LAURENT BAHEUX
9 783961 712342
The French photographer Laurent Baheux dedicates his new book to the “King of the Animals”—the lion. Breathtaking black-and-white images create a powerful portrait of one of the most majestic and endangered species in the world. Think of lions and one might think of the powerful member of the “Big Five,” with a roar that echoes across the planes, and a merciless pursuit of its prey. One might think of the pack animal, surprisingly playful and affectionate within its pride. Or one might think of the endangered lion—long the target of hunters and trophy collectors. In this new photo book, Laurent Baheux journeys across Africa to capture the lion in all its intricate facets. The result is a sensitive and intimate photo portrait that shows the big cat in all its nuance: at once powerful, fragile, and tender. Baheux’s stunning black-and-white lion photographs show this feline animal with the precision and texture of a studio portrait—its many different movements, postures, behaviors, and expressions captured with startling intimacy. Playing among the pride, out hunting its prey, or eyeing us directly from the page, Baheux’s lion photography is as much a tribute to the lion’s character, power, and feeling as it is a haunting reminder that this most impressive of animals is also among the most endangered wildlife on earth. For over 15 years, Laurent Baheux has been creating a collection of monochrome wildlife photographs, characterized by a contrasting, condensed style. With a unique approach that overrides the laws of nature photography, Baheux seeks to capture the character of each animal as an individual. He is actively involved with environmental organizations, including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Jane Goodall Institute. In 2013, he served as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP) in the Wild & Precious campaign against poaching. His photographs are shown in galleries and exhibitions in his native France and abroad and are the subject of numerous books and publications. FRAGILE
PEDRO JARQUE KREBS There are few things more fascinating than the diversity of the animal kingdom—and it’s a wonder under immense threat. The latest figures estimate that 60 percent of all animal populations on our planet have been wiped out in the last 50 years.
9 783961 712229
Pedro Jarque Krebs, a multi-award-winning wildlife photographer, focuses his lens on this fragile natural world to draw attention to its precarious situation. His photographs aim to break down the psychological and emotional barriers that separate us from our fellow creatures, capturing every animal—whether a bird, a reptile, or a big cat—in an atmosphere of breathtaking intimacy. Beautiful and humbling, his images give the animals their full and due dignity. They remind us that we are not the center of the universe, and that our most important project is to protect the intricate ecosystem of which we are just a small, constituent part.
Pedro Jarque Krebs was born in 1963 in Lima, Peru, and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. One of the most celebrated photographers, his numerous awards include the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award.
“My goal with these images is to raise our awareness of the beauty and diversity of the natural world, but—even more importantly—its dreadful fragility and endangerment.” Pedro Jarque Krebs

WATER
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE ELEMENT RUDI SEBASTIAN Water. The origin of life. The stroke of luck among cosmic coincidences. The chameleon of molecules that makes all the difference. Every living entity depends on its existence. Yet in and of itself, water appears rather modest. Colorless and tasteless, it is only in its environment that water comes to life, receiving color through the reflection of the sky, and dynamism in its movement along rivers, over mountains, oceans, and plains. Photographer Rudi Sebastian has dedicated his photographic life to water in all its forms. For the last few years he has traveled the globe to capture every imaginable facet of this essential substance in all its liquid, gaseous, and solid forms. The result is an exquisite photographic book that presents an unprecedented spectrum of this miracle substance—from a pond to the endless expanse of the Pacific, from the ice of the polar regions to the salt-encrusted lakes of the great deserts. Taking stylistic inspiration from Monet and classical modernism, Sebastian’s images ripple with texture and ever-moving colors. His waterscapes are as vivid as the substance itself, a rich tribute to the planet’s life force. Accompanying texts reveal the natural history and wonders of water on earth. Where did it come from? What role has it played in the emergence of life? This photographic journey takes us all over the truly blue planet to remind us that water is never just water but a whole universe of diversity and beauty.
9 783961 712212
Rudi Sebastian, born in 1960 in Rüssingen in the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany, dedicated himself to photography after many years primarily spent in the advertising industry. His main interest is water and landscape photography, influenced stylistically by Monet and classical modernism. He is particularly interested in the transfer of the space onto the surface, whereby what is shown often loses its point of reference and becomes an interface between the tangible and abstract.

FORESTS IN OUR WORLD
HOW THE CLIMATE AFFECTS WOODLANDS GUNTHER WILLINGER Forests are the green lungs of the world, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They filter our air, provide drinking water, and help stabilize our climate. They also vary greatly by region, providing a home to a rich diversity of animal, plant, and tree species around the globe. Wherever you find a forest, it’s sure to be a place of beauty, stillness, freshness, and replenishment. Today, more and more people are discovering the forest as a space in which to recharge their batteries but at the same time, more and more forest areas are being damaged or destroyed by human activity. Global deforestation is not a doom-laden future hypothesis, but a reality. Every year, forest areas the size of Austria are lost to the cultivation of crops, livestock, and the expansion of cities and infrastructure. This book is a tribute to and exploration of forests at a time when we urgently need to understand and protect them. It explores different forest types and their development according to local climate and soil conditions. It takes us deep into the Amazonian rain forest and looks at why this area is both particularly precious and highly vulnerable to damage. It maps the largest contiguous forest areas and examines why a mixed forest is more resilient than a monoculture. A rich source of information for all those concerned with the natural world, climate change, and environmental protection, this illustrated book is also a beautiful immersion in the arboreal refuges of our planet. From the vibrancy of the tropics and subtropics to the mythical

Pie Aerts is a Dutch photographer based in Amsterdam but typically on the road, documenting his travels around the world. He loves long road trips, the cosmos, sunlight, and bygone days, but above all else, telling stories. As a child, there was nothing he loved more than drawing. It taught him to use his imagination and create stories within the four corners of a canvas. Years later, he uses that visual storytelling as a photographer in an attempt to connect viewers with whatever he sees, whether it is people, wildlife, or landscapes.

The Peace Warriors of Karamoja A single dirt track leads through dried-up grass and thorny plants. Dust. Savannah. The last warmth of the sun disappears, signaling the return of the boys, the men, and their livestock. A relentless wind chases them inside a makeshift shelter for their cattle, sheep, and goats. A complex of corrals with little to no shelter for humans. A place where boys as young as three years old start working alongside their fathers. A place evolving around livestock. Where dinner consists of nothing but fresh milk, blood, and tobacco.

LIVE FROM F*CKING EVERYWHERE ADAM KATZ SINDING
Reporting live from “everywhere,” photographer Adam Katz Sinding (formerly known as Le 21ème) travels around the globe to document the fashion zeitgeist. An Instagram hit, @aks’s lens captures fashion weeks, runway idols, the next big trends, tastemakers, and—in particular—street style. His first teNeues book This is Not a F*cking Street Style Book featured a curated collection of some of his best images, taken both backstage at the shows and of the style-setters on the streets. In this new publication, Sinding widens his scope and explores culture and landmarks with the same sophisticated eye he uses to photograph fashion. In the last year, he has traveled through over 35 countries across the globe, snapping a breathtaking number of beautiful photos that capture the essence of a place as only he would recognize it. Along with his pictures, the book includes contributions from Errolson Hugh and offers a unique insight into the peculiar mind of Adam Katz Sinding himself, his obsessive exercising habits, and the cultural phenomenon he has become over the years.

TIME SENSITIV
FRANK OCKENFELS 3 As a highly visual, astute, and rapid observer of the world around him, photographer Frank Ockenfels 3 takes in an abundance of images that serve as artistic stimuli for his creative mind. A process of collision, collusion, and collaboration is the genesis of his creativity, leading to the transformation of a photographic image into something else, a “re-presentation” of what he saw through the lens. It becomes a new form that communicates a new message, a new meaning; often conveying a more powerfully emotional visual statement. The works of Ockenfels 3 in this book provide a window into his visual thinking, the internal world of imagery and emotions in his mind. Subjected to ink, collage, or paint, the images are no longer just photographs of an individual, but become a more personal statement of who the artist is, of his psyche and as such, creative artistry in its purest form. The erotic, the sublime, and the violent collages are blended with portraiture that seamlessly complement each other. The photographic creations become tactile, bringing another dimension of sensory experience. FWO3 is propelled by a drive and curiosity to discover an image that is not yet known, at the same time he creates a visual language that speaks from the most primal and dark corners of his mind. He creates waking dreams, images that represent the darkest, least-illuminated aspects of his unconscious projected on the person he has photographed. He has the courage to go way beyond the expected and the obvious to the breaking of boundaries of traditional photography. Ockenfels 3 does not play it safe, and as a result, he is very effective at evoking from the viewer aspects of their own psyche of which they may or may not be aware. One cannot help but feel a resonance with the chaotic vibrancy of his mind. He leaves the imprint of his unconscious on the photographic image.
9 783961 712298
Creativity: that wonderful intersection of dream, fantasy, and art is not just an opportunity to express a concept or an emotion, but an occasion to open up an experience in both the artist and the viewer. This can result in a disquieting, yet aesthetically pleasing moment in time. Frank Ockenfels 3 is an American photographer, artist, and director. He is renowned for his portraiture and incorporating non-photographic elements in his work. Ockenfels applies techniques like collage, painting, and drawing to his photographs. His career began working for magazines such as Rolling Stone, Spin, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, and Vogue. He photographed over 200 album covers for various musicians. Additionally, he has created countless campaigns for major television and movie clients. Other advertising clients include Nike, K Swiss, Reebok, and Hennessy. Frank Ockenfels 3’s work has been in demand for over three decades.
The overlaying of photography, writing, and drawing – the ultimate collage A journal reflecting daily encounters in the creative world A volatile mixture of energy and imagery with dark traces

SELECTED WORKS VINCENT PETERS
9 783961 712281
Over the last quarter century, Vincent Peters’s photographs have graced the pages of Vogue, Glamour, and GQ and defined fashion campaigns from Dior to Hugo Boss to Yves Saint Laurent. One of the most sought-after portrait and fashion photographers, Vincent Peters prints also have a significant following in the fine art market. Vincent Peters’s photographs are defined by their precision, love of detail, and an exquisite lighting that lifts his images beyond fast-moving trends into something timeless and iconic. With an aesthetic reminiscent of Jeanloup Sieff or Herb Ritts, Peters manages to capture even the most photographed of faces—whether Scarlett Johansson, Monica Bellucci, or Penélope Cruz—with previously unseen nuance, creating a new sense of intimacy with each subject. Vincent Peters’s work has already appeared in The Light Between Us and Personal. Now, in parallel with the major Vincent Peters solo show at Fotografiska in Stockholm, this compact and affordable Vincent Peters photo book presents a selection of his best black-and-white images, including portraits of Charlize Theron, John Malkovich, Laetitia Casta, and Emma Watson. It’s a vivid overview of a photographic artist who is always evolving, while remaining true to his principles.
Vincent Peters, born in Bremen, Germany, in 1969, is one of today’s most active fashion photographers. At age of 20, he moved to New York, where he worked as a photo assistant. NUDE
STEFAN RAPPO “Stefan Rappo is the photographer of emotions. He creates subtle and inconspicuous images without ornament or demanding staging: a return to the natural state and the primacy of emotions.” —Normal Magazine Stefan Rappo’s nude photography strikes an intriguing note between intimacy and distance. At first, the viewer feels a certain distance, and in the next moment they are entangled in the picture’s tangible tensions and emotions. A longtime assistant to Peter Lindbergh and a renowned portrait photographer, Rappo has found his own nude pictorial language that focuses on the female form—at times drawing on the studio tradition and at others reveling in the body in motion. Nude, Rappo’s first publication, brings together some of his favorite nude photographs, indispensable for those who love nude photography.

Born in 1972 in Friborg, Switzerland, Stefan Rappo is a photographer. At the age of 30 he quit his job making heavy forestry equipment to study photography in the South of France. INDIA
ANDREAS H. BITESNICH A new edition of Andreas H. Bitesnich’s classic portrait of India, a timeless photographic masterpiece capturing the breathtaking beauty and complexity of the world’s largest democracy. India is constantly on the move. It moves sideways, backwards, upwards, and forwards. It is a nation of both past and future, where time seems to pass by its own laws, and extraordinary tradition coexists with hyper modernity and ever-booming construction. For many, India is as much a state of mind as a country. Through this photographic journey of discovery, Andreas H. Bitesnich creates a fascinating book about India, revealing many facets of this intricate, populous country. In color, black-and-white, and sepia, his stunning photographs show Indian culture, food, faith, heritage, landmarks, cities, and wildlife, as well as its daily interactions and centuries-old monuments. The images do not shy away from the complexity and raw hardship of Indian life. With honesty and respect, Bitesnich documents the country’s ongoing struggles as much as its vibrancy and growth. We see India’s temples and mosques, its wild Indian elephants, its extraordinary architecture, and its deep spirituality. And we see its urban sprawl, its squalor, its street poverty, and suffering. The result is a photo book immersed in the Indian present and complexity, while steeped in the texture and gravitas of a bygone travel album.

MORE IS MORE
MEMPHIS, MAXIMALISM, AND NEW WAVE DESIGN CLAIRE BINGHAM Pump up the postmodernism! Instantly recognizable and never, ever boring, Memphis is one of the most important design movements of the 20 th century. Founded by Italian architect and designer Ettore Sottsass, the Memphis Group put forward a visionary new approach to design, defining the ’80s with its rad ical combinations of shapes, materials, and patterns. Serving up kooky design that’s eclectic yet tightly cu rated, the Memphis look is exuberant, outrageous, and entertaining. Who doesn’t want a bit of that? Spanning the worlds of interiors, furniture, fashion, and graphics, this new design book explores how the rule-breaking Memphis aesthetic continues to shape the modern creative scene. It started with Millennial Pink. Now the sweet shop colors, terrazzo floors, and curved cartoon shapes have been given a black outline and made graphic and cool. In More is More, editor Claire Bingham curates iconic Memphis designs and interiors alongside contemporary projects steeped in the effervescent Memphis mood. Step inside stunning, postmodernism-loving homes, studios, and hotels, capturing the Memphis spirit with their hello-there hues, vive la différence mindset, and flamboyant creativity – all hopefully, in the teeth of good taste. And along the way, hear from fashion-forward creatives embracing the Memphis look, as well as from Memphis Group founding member Peter Shire—a man who knows that stripes make you happy. Shire shares the stories behind the signature high-energy style and tells us how the ’80s vibe has impacted his life and work. For both the leaders and followers of the New Wave, Memphis is more than a style. It’s an attitude.

KIMON’S GREEK TABLE
HOW TO COOK, CHERISH, AND REINVENT CULINARY CLASSICS KIMON RIEFENSTAHL A culinary journey through Greece and a treat for all slow food fans—with more than 80 Mediterranean recipes and entertaining stories from life on the Aegean coast. Kimon Riefenstahl always carries the sun of Greece in his heart and its flavors on his palette. A passionate hotelier and gourmand, he knows exactly why the best Greek salad keeps its ingredients minimal, why high-quality olive oil makes all the difference, and why a proper Greek mezze can be the making of lifelong friendship. In Kimon’s Greek Table, the passionate chef shares a very personal recipe collection—a mixture of culinary childhood memories, experimental cooking adventures, and Greek cuisine classics. The grandson of an experienced fisherman, the slow food lover is not just interested in a great Greek meal in friendly company; the careful selection and origin of individual ingredients are just as important as the results. From breakfast to evening mains, the majority of his dishes are sourced from small local farms and markets, or indeed from his own vegetable garden and chicken coop. For experienced cooks and curious beginners alike, Kimon’s Greek Table is a beautiful cookbook of Aegean flavors and a rich inspiration for greater culinary pleasure, mindfulness, and deceleration.

GOLDBECK
9 783961 711802
Throughout Europe, GOLDBECK stands for elementary construction with a system. In its 50-year history, the Bielefeld, Germany–based construction firm has set benchmarks in the construction of logistics halls and multi-storey car parks, the development of office buildings and construction-related services, in building management, and as a front-runner in digitalization. This book presents not only the extraordinary range of the GOLDBECK portfolio, but also the impressive story of this second-generation family business. For company founder Ortwin Goldbeck, “Building is one of the supreme disciplines, because it shapes people’s perceived environment.” In other words, the buildings in which we live inform our everyday experience. GOLDBECK also applies the inverse rule: the experience and requirements of users and residents are the guiding principle for planning and construction. GOLDBECK excels in realizing highly individual buildings with the system components of its own production. This GOLDBECK book presents a selection of the most remarkable GOLDBECK buildings through outstanding photography. Up-to-date image spreads and interviews provide first-hand insight into the people and values behind the firm. Discover the innovative solutions that have characterized the company’s history and explore the concepts and technologies that will determine the future of building.

„AN EINEM SONNIGEN, ABER KALTEN ERSTEN NOVEMBER HABEN WIR DEN GRUNDSTEIN FÜR EIN GANZ NEUES WERK AN DIESER STELLE GELEGT. SO ETWAS HATTE ES IN UNSERER FIRMA NUR EINMAL GEGEBEN: 1969 BEI DER GRÜNDUNG UNSERES UNTERNEHMENS.“ Ortwin Goldbeck
