M AY 2015

T HE WAY I SEE IT Spring is about putting a fresh new spin on tried-and-true menswear classics ‒ shedding the weight of winter, loosening up, and remixing your wardrobe in a way that’s directly your own. And never before has there been a better time to give your head-to-toe look a jolt of life. Why? Because this spring, menswear’s most dependable designers are charting a new course. They’re cuting workday staples into relaxed, lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton, and using breezy, sun-kissed color palettes in sandy tans and watery blues. They’re looking to old Hollywood and the tropics when it comes to casual wear, working traditionally fall shades like burgundy, dark green and navy in on everything from short-sleeve shirts to sport coats. And they’re rethinking what it means to be ‘prep.’ I’m confident you’ll find everything you need to know about spring right inside this issue of The Blueprint, our map to menswear’s new landscape ‒ and the coordinates you need to navigate in style.

THIS SEASON 6

IN COLOR...

SHARP CHARTREUSE

Lime supersedes yellow as the choice bright hue of the season. Fresh green shades can vary between sweet and sour for a hit of uncompromising color.

MIDNIGHT INKS

Dark blues move ever closer to black. Stepping away from the very classic French navy, color drifts down into a deeper, darker world of black iris and indigo ink.

GOLDEN SUN

Rich, golden-tinted tones warm up the palette. Ranging from amber to buckthorn, the season feels as though it’s basking in the haze of the summer sun.

CLASSIC GREYS

Grey returns as the essential neutral. Stony grey is the bedrock of the season, while sleet tones and steel blue bring beautiful depth to concrete neutrals.

EDIBLE BERRIES

Purple becomes the new pink. Having been emerging quietly for some time, beet, purple and plum burst beautifully onto the scene this season, and become key colors for S/S 15.

STRIPES

One of the most prevalent trends to emerge from this season’s catwalks has been stripes in a medley of permutations. Whether vertical or horizonatal, in chevrons or spliced together, stripes continue to have an impact at all levels of the menswear market. Top-to-toe styling continues to push the use of print for the summer season.

15

POST - INTERNET ART

At the more premium-streetwear end of the menswear market, the internet continues be influential. Vaporwave-inspired graphics, digital manipulation and clashing modern references gave a youthled attitude to directional modern sport and streetwear styles. All-over print continues to be important, highlighting the intensity of this trend.

DOODLES Menswear continues to embrace the inner child, with doodle and sketch designs seen across a variety of runways this season. Playful handcreated narritives such as tattoos, portraiture and scribbled florals featured in collections. All-over print is important with big and bold motifs for a dramatic statement.

TROPICAL The tropical print continues to be a favourite for menswear, with vintage Hawaiian reference still playing an important role in pared-back tones for smart-casual looks. Vibrant styles inject a tropical heat into resort and holiday looks.

18

DOTS & SPOTS Dots and spots return this spring/ summer, with oversized dots giving this simple motif a refreshing update. Classic black and white is still the colour combination of choice, especially on smart-causal looks across trousers, shirts and outerwear.

19

BLACK & WHITE FLORALS Monochrome florals in an abundance of styles offered an unseasonal colour direction on the spring/summer runways. Hawaiian, tropical, painterly and intarsia techniques were all seen with a distinct lack of colour. To give this trend impact, oversizing and scale is important, giving life to tailoring and knitwear pieces.

20

BADGES PATCHES

&

Continuing the trend for multiple placement branding, badges placed all-over garments reinforced summer themes such as travel, safari and outdoor pursuits. Designs were also digitally printed as repeat patterns, or appliquĂŠd on garments in random playful placements for an anything-goes-attitude.
