Born in Staffordshire to a physician father of Dutch descent who had recently emigrated from New York, de Wint served his apprenticeship with engraver John Raphael Smith before settling in London. Here he became established as a drawing master and spent most of the year teaching and painting in London, but in the summers he travelled to the countryside where he taught wealthy families and painted his much-loved landscapes. He particularly favoured the North of England, spending much time in Yorkshire, Cumberland and Westmorland; his paintings can be found in the National Gallery and the V&A.

1036 Circle of Francesco Zucarelli RA (1702-1788) Italian Extensive Italianate landscape Oil on canvas, 54.5cm by 83.5cm Provenance: Private Collection, UK From mid 18th century onwards, Francesco Zuccarelli’s arcadian landscapes became popular throughout Europe and particularly in England, where he lived for extended periods. However, while Zuccarelli remains one possible attribution so too does Giuseppe Zais (1709-1784), another talented Venetian landscape painter of the same period. Zais was relatively unknown in England, and the often close similarities in their work led over time to many of his paintings entering English collections as by Zuccarelli.

George Lambert (1700-1765) Italianate River Landscape (c.1755) Oil on canvas, 31cm by 38.5cm
Hogarth’s close friend George Lambert was a founding member and later chairman of The Society of Artists, established in 1760 – one of Britain’s first professional artist associations and an important forerunner of The Royal Academy. Though now less known than his younger contemporary Richard Wilson, Lambert too is considered, in Luke Herrmann’s words “One of the pioneers of landscape painting in Britain… and one of the first British – born painters of ‘natural’ landscape”. As with Wilson, his work was often influenced by the Classical landscapes of 17th century French artists such as Claude Lorrain or Gaspard Dughet – whether in depictions of Britain or, as here, in a pastoral vision of Italy.

1088 Studio of Louis-Jean-Francois Lagrenee (1725-1805) French The Education of the Virgin c.1773 Oil on canvas, 40cm by 31.5cm Provenance: Anthony Barbieri London (12.06.71) Private Collection, UK The original canvas and paint surface of the present work support a date from the second half of the 18th century, not long after the original version on, copper, was executed for Mme Geoffrin in 1773, when Lagrenee was Professor-Rector of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris. This fully attributed version is listed in Lagrenee’s manuscript “Recueil de sujets”, and was exhibited at the Salon in 1773. It is likely that the original is the work auctioned at Villanfray & Associes at Drouot on 30.03.2009 (lot 15) and at Sotheby’s Monaco on 20.06.1987 (lot 401). Comparison with the fully attributed painting indicates that the present work on offer is a faithful and competent copy, with many features consistent with an attribution to Lagrenee’s studio. Based on images provided, this attribution has been confirmed by Alastair Laing and Jamie Mulherron.
