Samuel Casey was born around 1724 and worked in Little Rest, now Kingston, Rhode Island. His work would appear to have been of a good quality with a number of pieces known. Of his porringers Alice H. R. Hauck, editor, notes ‘.. the porringers are typical of the period, having nicely shaped convex bodies, domed centers, and keyhole handles. Casey’s superb craftsmanship can clearly be seen in the perfect form and careful finish of these simple pieces.’
(A. Hauck, editor, American Silver 1670-1830 The Moore Collection at Providence College, Providence, Rhode Island, 1980, p. 70. The Moore collection includes five examples with at least one having a seemingly identical handle to the present example (op. cit., pp.70-71 and pl. 54). Two other examples are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, each again has the same piercing on the spatulate handle. Both entered the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a bequest of Alphonso T. Clearwater in 1933 (museum numbers 33.120.333 and 33.120.334).

Eileen Cobb, née Darwood, was born in Blackheath in 1932, the only child of William and Gladys Darwood. Brought up in Kent, she was educated at Dartford Grammar School for Girls, which she credited for her work ethic.
Going on to study medicine at St Mary’s Hospital in London, she was a pioneering example of a woman in a world that did not encourage women entering the medical profession, let alone rising to consultant status. She was a force to be reckoned with, and was known for her courage, fortitude, commitment and determination.
Having worked in several posts, including as a Houseman at Bournemouth and Poole Hospital, Eileen rose to Senior Registrar at Sussex County Hospital in Brighton before moving into paediatric anaesthesia at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She then went on to become a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in paediatric anaesthesia at Northampton General Hospital in 1969, where she worked with many surgeons, who included orthopaedic surgeon Nigel Cobb, who she went on to marry in 1972. Nigel was the surgeon who pieced back together British motorcycle racing legend, Barry Sheene, following his horrendous Silverstone crash; Eileen was the ‘on call’ anaesthetist that day.
Nigel and Eileen were known amongst their more traditional colleagues for doing things in their own particular way, and Eileen went on to buy her own house near the hospital following their marriage, so she could be close when she was on call.
Eileen had a love of cars, driving, and Formula 1 racing, and was often on call for race days at Silverstone. Indeed, in the 1960s she commissioned a special, fast car to be built for her by Porsche. Having retired from practice in the early 1990s, Eileen and Nigel had time to devote to other interests; they were members of the Northampton Food and Wine Society and are well remembered for hosting lavish parties. The pair were also avid collectors of furniture, furnishings and decorative items for their numerous homes, and Eileen had a special interest in Chinese porcelain and cats. Their tastes and collecting habits reflected their love of travel, which they were able to enjoy in retirement. Eileen loved jewellery and brooches in particular, and loved to read, never throwing away any books; she and Nigel were very much collectors!
Much of Eileen’s collections, which will be sold across several sales in early 2025, will be sold in aid of various charities.

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity.
Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.
It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
