Tennants is the UK’s largest family-owned fine art auctioneers, with a well-deserved reputation for delivering unrivalled service and results. Twenty-seven specialist departments offer an outstanding range of depth and expertise that, combined with the company’s strong traditional values and personal approach, have won Tennants widespread respect in the international marketplace. Each year Tennants holds over 80 auctions and handles in excess of 40,000 lots covering all major disciplines, making it one of the UK’s busiest salerooms.

NATURAL HISTORY AND TAXIDERMY DEPARTMENT

Tennants is thought to be the only UK auctioneers to hold dedicated Natural History and Taxidermy sales. The auctions cover a wealth of collecting areas, from prehistoric giant clam shells and mineral specimens, to Victorian collector’s cabinets and historic full mount pieces.

The company has a strong reputation in the field and a global client base, and has been instructed by internationally recognised collectors such as Jacques Henrijean, John Willett and Raymond & Annie Hutchison to sell their collections, as well as the Historical Collection of Natural History and Taxidermy from Hodnet Hall and the James Harrison Collection of Birds. The department specialises in Victorian and Edwardian taxidermy by the leading firms of the era, including:

• Rowland Ward

• Van Ingen of Mysore

• John Cooper

• Peter Spicer

Once dismissed as being out of fashion, today Natural History and Taxidermy is appealing to a new generation of collectors and interior designers, appreciated and sought-after for both its academic interest and its visual appeal.

YOUR SPECIALIST

Robbie Bright is the specialist in charge of the Natural History and Taxidermy sales programme. He joined Tennants in 2007 as a porter in the saleroom and on the transport team, having previously worked in his family’s fine art and antiques delivery business.

Robbie has had a keen interest in taxidermy and the natural world since childhood. His father was an amateur taxidermist and dealer, and Robbie spent many hours helping with the finishing of cased specimens with naturalistic detail. After assisting in the Natural History and Taxidermy department for several years, Robbie was appointed as the specialist in 2015.

FRONT COVER Lot 126

Giles Sim’s life has been deeply intertwined with the rhythms of the countryside and the wonders of the natural world. From a young age, he was drawn to the outdoors, cultivating a profound love for hunting, horse racing and, most notably, birdwatching. This passion for avian life sparked a remarkable journey over 25 years ago, when he began to collect taxidermy birds - a hobby that quickly grew into an obsession.

Giles set out with a clear and simple rule: to collect only those birds he had personally observed in the wild. This led him on countless expeditions across the globe, from the sunlit plains of Spain to the dense forests of Romania and from the lush rainforests of Costa Rica to the vibrant shores of Tobago. Eventually, his zeal extended beyond the limits of his initial rule, and he began to acquire birds from even the most far-flung corners of the world, whether or not he had the opportunity to see them in person. His collection became a testament to the diversity and beauty of birdlife across the globe, encompassing species from every continent.

Giles’ beloved and long-suffering wife, Penny, who has sadly passed away, took on the meticulous task of cataloguing each bird, ensuring that each was properly documented and preserved. The collection stands as a tribute, not only to the wonders of nature but also to an adventurous life well lived. Now, as some of these birds come to auction, it offers a rare opportunity for others to own a piece of this extraordinary collection.
