FRONT COVER Lot 2301 BACK COVER Lot 2078
An Elizabeth I Silver Communion-Cup and Paten, Maker’s Mark IP in a Shaped Shield, London, 1573
the bowl tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot with central knop, the bowl engraved with bands of foliage strapwork, the foot and knop with textured bands, the detachable cover with central tapering foot, engraved with a similar textured band and dated ‘1574’ 16.6cm high, 5oz 5dwt, 164gr
Provenance:
Sotheby’s, London, 10 June 1993, lot 396. Christie’s, 1 December 2004, lot 719 (£7,170).
Nicholas Shaw Antiques, Petworth, 1 March 2005, where acquired by the present owner.
The maker’s mark on the present communioncup and paten is that recorded in Jackson’s Silver and Gold Marks of England, Scotland and Ireland, p. 95. While the silversmith who used the initials has not been identified it would seem that they specialised in the making of communion-cups like the present example, with others recorded dating from 1563 and 1579. A very similar, though slightly larger, example was sold by Woolley and Wallis, 25 April 2006.
£3,000-5,000
A Queen Anne Silver Tankard, by Thomas Farren, London, 1707 tapering cylindrical and on slightly spreading foot, the hinged flat cover with scroll thumbpiece, with scroll handle, engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliage cartouche 17.6cm high, 25oz 1dwt, 779gr
Provenance: Nicholas Shaw Antiques, Petworth, 8 May 2004, where acquired by the present owner.
The arms are those of Ogilvie quartering Sinclair of Deskford quartering Grant. This coat-of-arms was used by the family of the Earls of Findlater and of Seafield, though as there is no engraved coronet or mark of cadency it is impossible to say for whom the engraving was actually done. Perhaps most famous in the line was James Ogilvy, 4th Earl of Findlater who was created Earl of Seafield in 1701.

A Russian Gem-Set Silver-Mounted Sandstone Match-Holder in the Form of an Elephant, by Fabergé, St Peterburg, Workmaster Julius Rappoport, Circa 1890 humorously modelled, the ovoid sandstone body mounted with silver trunk, legs, ears and tail and with a central well for matches with gadrooned rim, with two garnet cabochon-set eyes 11.5cm wide
Provenance:
by family tradition gifted to a member of the Cullingworth family, who were working at Clifton Castle, Masham, in the mid20th century, by Lieutenant Colonel Assheton Penn Curzon-Howe-Herrick and his wife, Joan Henrietta, daughter of James Windsor Lewis, and by descent to the present owner.
The Curzon-Howe family were remarkably well connected through the 20th century. Lieutenant Colonel Assheton Penn Curzon-Howe-Herrick (1898-1959), who likely previously owned, by inheritance, the present elephant, was the son of Sir Assheton Gore Curzon-Howe K.C.B., C.M.G., C.V.O. (1850-1911), the celebrated British naval officer who was, for a time, the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet. Sir Assheton in turn was the son of Richard William Penn Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe (1796-1870) and counted the 2nd and 3rd Earls Howe as his brothers through his father’s first marriage.
The extensive nature of the network of the family is perhaps best illustrated by reviewing the list of the invited guests to Sir Assheton’s wedding in 1892, at St Mark’s church, North Audley Street, London, to Alice Anne Cowell, daughter of General Right Hon. Sir John Cowell, of Clifton Castle. The invitees, as recorded in a contemporary report published in the Yorkshire Herald on 27 February 1892, include a veritable who’s who of European royalty and British aristocracy. The report further shows the event to have been a lavish affair, noting:
“The bride looked very handsome in her bridal costume of rich white corded silk, draped with fine Brussels lace and trimmed with sprays of orange blossom. Her veil was fastened to the hair by a large diamond star and was surmounted by a wreath of orange blossom. She wore a magnificent diamond and turquoise bangle, a present from her Majesty, who also sent the bridal bouquet of choice exotics. Her other ornament was a diamond cross, the gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were Miss Marie Cowell, sister of the bride, Lady Alexandra Hamilton and Lady Gladys Hamilton, nieces of the bridegroom, Miss May McNeil, and Miss Frances Whyley. They were attired alike in charming gowns of white bengaline edged in white fur and trimmed with silver embroidery with hats en suite.”
The report goes on to provide a list some of the wedding gifts given to the couple, presented, as the guest list would suggest, by royalty and the aristocracy:
“Her Majesty presented the bride with a handsome Indian shawl, a turquoise and diamond bangle, and the bridal bouquet of choice exotics; the Prince of Wales and Prince George of Wales gave a travelling clock to Captain Curzon; the Grand Duke of Hesse sent an embossed silver box; the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, silver bowl; the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, a tortoiseshell clock; the Marchioness of Lorne, a jewelled spray; Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg, a jewelled pin; the Duchess of Albany, silver mounted inkstand; the Prince of Leiningen, silver coffee pot; Prince Louis of Battenberg, pair of silver candlesticks; the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn, diamond pin and ring.”
Sadly, no mention is made of the present elephant, though the list does go on to note ‘The other presents were numerous.’ It is of course also possible that the elephant was purchased by Sir Assheton, the St Peterburg hallmark is that used from 18821899 which fits in with his wedding, or given to him as a gift on another occasion.
The wider family were well aware of the firm of Fabergé, particularly its London branch, which opened in 1903, through the role of Richard George Pen Curzon, 4th Earl Howe (1861-1929) as Lord Chamberlain to Queen Alexandra. Around this time Henry Charles Bainbridge, Fabergé’s agent in London, instigated a project that has become known as the Sandringham commission. This saw Fabergé send to London the artist Boris Frödman-Cluzel who prepared wax models of various animals on the Sandringham estate. These wax models were translated in the workshops of Fabergé into, mostly, hardstone models which were then sold either directly to the King and Queen or to members of their inner court to be presented to their royal highnesses. The only two examples not made in hardstone were the models of Vassilka, the borzoi, and Persimmon, one of Edward VII’s racehorses, which were produced in silver, presumably as their long legs made them unsuitable for carving in hardstone. The model of Vassilka was purchased by Earl Howe on 5 November 1909 from Fabergé to be given as a gift to the Queen. The model remains in the Royal Collection to this day.
The connection between Earl Howe and Queen Alexandra seems to have been close, and the gift giving reciprocal. Following his death in 1929 the 4th Earl Howe lists of number of items in his will which had been given to him by the late Queen.
Humorously modelled silver-mounted sandstone match holders in the form of animals, such as the present example were made in various forms. Perhaps the closest to the present elephant was one previously in the collection of His Royal Highness the Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and which was sold by Christie’s 25 November 2013 as lot 225. Another example, formed as a rhinoceros was sold by Bonhams (26 November 2014, lot 156) and one formed as a pig was sold by Sotheby’s (12 June 2008, lot 653).

Omega: A Rare British Military Royal Air Force “Thin Arrow” Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed Omega, ref: 2777-1, issued in 1953, (calibre 283) manual wound lever movement signed and numbered 13056698, movement dust cover and inner retention ring, black dial with Arabic numerals and Thin broad arrow, case with fixed bars between the lugs, screw back with broad arrow and military numbers 6645 101000 6B/542 1504/53, inside back cover stamped Omega Watch Co and numbered 2777-1 SC 37mm wide
Omega watches were issued to the RAF, which are today often appropriately nicknamed “53 Omegas”. Designed for use in combat, they were built to a very high standard, they were waterproof and had the 283 calibre shockproof movements finished in rose gold, and a soft iron inner casing to make the watch less magnetic, thus reducing the risk of interfering with an aircraft’s instruments whilst not altering the efficiency of the watch.
The first of this consignment of watches were issued with ‘Thin Arrow’ radium dials, like this present example. However, there was concern within the MoD that the radium might be a safety issue when the watches were all stockpiled; the watches were recalled and re-dialled with a safer alternative – the tritium ‘Fat Arrow’ dial. The vast majority of the original radium dials were replaced by the MoD, and it is thought that only a few hundred of the Omega ‘Thin Arrow’ watches escaped the upgrade, and few still survive today, particularly in good condition.

Hanhart: A Rare Second World War German Luftwaffe Pilots Single Push Chronograph Wristwatch, circa 1938, (Hanhart calibre 40) manual wound lever movement, original black dial with radium finished Arabic numerals and outer fifth of seconds minute track, two sub dials for seconds and 30 minute register, cathedral luminous hands, nickel plated case with a single button in the band to operate the chronograph, large crown, rare original rotating bezel with aligning arrow marker, fixed bars between the lugs, the typical form Hanhart screw back with three notches and stamped to the centre Wassergeschutzt Stossfest and numbered 104746 40mm wide
This present example is a rare German military Luftwaffe pilots wristwatch made by the Hanhart company and housing the high quality calibre 40 movement which was produced by the factory in 1938. This example has the rare pilot's feature of having a rotating bezel and early original feature of the aligning arrow. The bezel was aligned with the minute hand to record a given flying distance and also gave a second precise time intervals of up to 30 minutes on the dial register. Another calibre 40 example very close to the present examples serial number is recorded in the book "Military Timepieces" page 361 by Konrad Knirim. This is one of the rarest Luftwaffe pilots wristwatches on the watch market and a great opportunity to add this original watch to your collection.

Pink diamonds are exceptionally rare. Historically, they have largely been discovered in India, South Africa, Tanzania, and Borneo, amongst other places. Some estimates suggest that as few as 1 in 10,000 gem quality diamonds produced worldwide show any noticeable colour. Of that small number, a similar percentage (approximately 0.01%) have a pink tone. In more recent times (the latter part of the 20th century into the early 21st century) the most prolific producer of pink diamonds in the world was the Argyle mine in Australia. Only 1 in 90,000 diamonds mined there tended to be of gem quality pink colour. Furthermore, Argyle diamonds tend to be in the lower clarity range, unlike this example.
How coloured diamonds are formed varies depending upon the colour. Some diamonds obtain their colour from plastic deformation. This is caused by dislocations in the diamond structure, which happens when the diamond is deep within the Earth, under great pressure, and subject to very high temperatures, when atoms are more mobile. The word plastic indicates that this deformation is permanent. This structural anomaly allows free bonds to react with light, and cause absorption in the blue end of the light spectrum, which can create a brown colour. In pink and red diamonds, the phenomenon is not yet fully understood, and it is possible that the aforementioned plastic deformation occurs in combination with another impurity, or defect, to create these incredibly rare colours.

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.
It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
