The Yorkshire Critters comprise over forty furniture makers working in the tradition of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson, many of whom trained in his Kilburn workshop. Increasingly popular, the most well-known of them include Stan ‘Woodpeckerman’ Dodds, Wilf ‘Squirrelman’ Hutchinson and Colin ‘Beaverman’ Almack.
Numerous important private collections of Mouseman have been sold at Tennants over the years, including the Library from Leeds Girls’ High School, the Boardroom from Grattans in Bradford, the contents of St Hilda’s Priory in Whitby, and property from Marco-Pierre White’s Rudloe Arms Hotel in Wiltshire.

Eileen Cobb, née Darwood, was born in Blackheath in 1932, the only child of William and Gladys Darwood. Brought up in Kent, she was educated at Dartford Grammar School for Girls, which she credited for her work ethic.
Going on to study medicine at St Mary’s Hospital in London, she was a pioneering example of a woman in a world that did not encourage women entering the medical profession, let along rising to consultant status. She was a force to be reckoned with, and was known for her courage, fortitude, commitment and determination.
Having worked in several posts, including as a Houseman at Bournemouth and Poole Hospital, Eileen rose to Senior Registrar at Sussex County Hospital in Brighton before moving into paediatric anaesthesia at Great Ormond Street Hospital. She then went on to become a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in paediatric anaesthesia at Northampton General Hospital in 1969, where she worked with many surgeons, who included orthopaedic surgeon Nigel Cobb, who she went on to marry in 1972. Nigel was the surgeon who pieced back together the face of British motorcycle racing, Barry Sheene, following his horrendous Silverstone crash; Eileen was the ‘on call’ anaesthetist that day.
Nigel and Eileen were known amongst their more traditional colleagues for doing things in their own particular way, and Eileen went on to buy her own house near the hospital following their marriage, so she could be close when she was on call.
Eileen had a love of cars, driving, and Formula 1 racing, and was often on call for race days at Silverstone. Indeed, in the 1960s she commissioned a special, fast car to be built for her by Porsche.
Having retired from practice in the early 1990s, Eileen and Nigel had time to devote to other interests; they were members of the Northampton Food and Wine Society and are well remembered for hosting lavish parties. The pair were also avid collectors of furniture, furnishings and decorative items for their numerous homes, and Eileen had a special interest in Chinese porcelain and cats. Their tastes and collecting habits reflected their love of travel, which they were able to enjoy in retirement.
Eileen loved jewellery and brooches in particular, and loved to read, never throwing away any books; she and Nigel were very much collectors!

Tennants is delighted to include a fascinating group of Arts & Crafts silver in this sale. The majority of the items, offered as lots 250-292, are sold as part of the Lion Collection, the endeavour of one man, John L. Davis. John is renowned for his collections of tobacco-boxes, caddy-spoons, buckles and contemporary silver, each collection having been carefully curated, researched and published by the owner.
The group presents a cross-section of some of the greatest makers and designers working in the first half of the 20th century, including Archibald Knox for Liberty; Henry George Murphy and Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr. These famous names are complemented with a further offering of the work of some more obscure designer silversmiths working at the same time.
While including a wide range of holloware the sale also includes a strong selection of napkin-rings, just a selection from a much larger collection which will be offered by Tennants in the Antiques & Interiors sale on 7 March and in the Fine Jewellery, Watches and Silver sale on 16 March.
Among the highlights of the section is an early biscuit-box by Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr, previously in the David and Vivian Campbell collection and a stunning Archibald Knox Cymric vase for Liberty & Co. Among the napkin-rings is a set of four by Henry George Murphy and rare examples by the Keswick School of Industrial Arts.
It is rare for such a collection of such breadth and quality to appear on the market but as the collector enters his eightieth year, we are delighted to have been asked to assist with finding these items new homes.

Omar Ramsden (1873-1939) & Alwyn Carr (1872-1940): An Arts & Crafts Silver and Enamel Biscuit-Box, London 1902, tapering oval, the sides chased with foliage scrolls and flowers, the pull-off cover enamelled with a scene of a windmill within a landscape, hallmarked London, 1902, maker’s mark Rn&Cr, further stamped ‘Designed and Made by Ramsden & Carr London’ 18.2cm wide, 12.2cm high, gross weight 22oz 12dwt, 703gr
Provenance:
The David and Vivian Campbell Collection, Christie’s, London, 20 April 2005, lot 3. The Lion Collection.
Comprising some 85 lots the collection of David and Vivian Campbell was one of the most extensive collections of the work of Omar Ramsden, both working on his own and working in partnership with Alwyn Charles Ellison Carr, to have yet be offered for sale by auction. Much of the collection was published by Eric Turner and Lynn Springer Roberts in their catalogue English Silver, Masterpieces by Omar Ramsden From the Campbell Collection, David A. Hanks & Associates, New York, 1992, which was published to accompany an exhibition of the pieces of the collection which has been assembled by 1992. The collection was exhibited in Chicago, Montreal, Nashville, Williamstown and Toronto. As the present biscuit-box was not included in either the book or accompanying exhibition it presumably joined the collection after 1992. The collection was sold by Christie’s in London on 20 April 2005.
The biscuit-box offered here represents an early example of their work, having only registered their first mark working in partnership in 1898, the same year they produced a mace for the City of Sheffield. By 1902, the year of the hallmark on the biscuit-box, there were already making extensive use of enamel panels such as the one featured here. As with other examples of their work, such as a vase offered as lot 4 in the same auction at Christie’s which is decorated with pomegranates, the biscuit-box offered here shows the strong influence of the French Art Nouveau movement on their production during the early years of their partnership.

Provenance: Bonhams, London, 26 April 2017, lot 339, where purchased by the present owner. The Lion Collection.
The mazer-bowl, perhaps named after the German màs, meaning ‘a spot’, in reference to the grain of the maple that was most often used to make them, is a traditional form of drinking vessel. English silver-mounted examples from the 14th to the 16th century are known and would have been available to view by Arts & Crafts artists in the early 20th century. As such they were a popular item for silversmiths, including not only Henry George Murphy as with the present example, but also Omar Ramsden whose name is perhaps more associated with the revival of the form. An example with very similar ornament to the present example, though lacking a cover and raised on a spiral-fluted foot is illustrated by P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin in their book on the artist (Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 95).

Paul Atterbury and John Benjamin describe the years after 1932 as ‘a highly productive period [for Murphy]’ and ‘... [a] period defined by a significant change in style, particularly in the field of silversmithing, with a new emphasis on line engraving and the modernist and geometric forms of Art Deco...’ (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 30), which is certainly an apt description of the present beaker. It has seemingly not been determined who was responsible for the engraving on these types of objects but George Taylor Friend, an accomplished engraver, was certainly known to not only be a friend of Murphy but also to have undertaken engraving work for him.

The Lion Collection. Niello is a traditional technique which Murphy himself describes as ‘... dating back to the 1st century A.D.’ (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 168), in the working notes for a lecture he presented at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1935. He describes the process in some detail and his recipe in particular as using ‘3 parts silver, 2 parts copper and 1 part lead. The copper and silver are melted together in a crucible and when properly mixed the lead is added’

Gifted to the vendor’s late husband by his uncle Thomas Bond Worth (from the family of William Henry Worth carpet manufacturers of Kidderminster).
Charles Robert Ashbee (1863-1942) founded the Guild and School of Handicraft in 1888. Based on the model of the medieval workshop, the Guild operated as a cooperative. Its style and aesthetics followed the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Guild produced leather, furniture, silver and metalwork, jewellery and books, with much of the work based on Ashbee’s designs. Revival of traditional techniques, education of working people and encouraging satisfaction through work were key principles of the Arts and Crafts movement and the Guild. In 1902, the Guild (150 people, the Guildsmen and their families) moved from East London to Chipping Campden. Ashbee believed that living a simple, collective life in rural surroundings would add to the health and well-being of the craftsmen and consequently, the work they produced. Although its work was widely exhibited, increasing financial difficulties from 1905 eventually resulted in the voluntary liquidation of the Guild in 1908. In 1909, Ashbee published his book on “Modern English Silver” in which a comparable piece to this example is illustrated as plate 17.
In 1850 William Henry Worth’s three sons, Thomas Bond, William and Joseph started a new Brussells Weave factory at Stourport. They were amongst the first to appreciate the importance of powered looms. By 1866 a purpose built factory was beginning to take place at Severn Valley Mills and in 1888 Lower Dudbridge Mills at Stroud in Gloucestershire was purchased for the weaving of Jacquard carpets. In 1896 the company was incorporated as a Limited Company and following the death of Thomas Bond Worth his sons became joint Managing Directors. Their joint leadership continuing for nearly fifty years.

Lots 405, 406 and 407 were commissioned in the 1930s for Tudor Croft, an Arts and Crafts house on the edge of Guisborough, was built by Ronald (Ron) Crossley in 1935.
Following the closure of their family brickworks in 1885, the Crossleys emigrated to the United States where Ron was born in 1891. However, the family returned to their homeland just a few years later and bought back the site of the brickworks and the whole neighbouring village of Commondale. Having re-established the brickworks to great success, by the 1930s the family were very wealthy.
Ron, along with his wife Lilian, built Tudor Court on the edge of Guisborough, and the house was constructed using the speciality 'Tudor' bricks made by the family firm, which were hand-made and sand-faced to give the bricks a textured surface.
Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson was commissioned to help furnish the house, including panelling the living and dining rooms, fitting and inglenook fireplace, beams, and front door as well as free-standing pieces of furniture. Indeed, there was even a Mouseman beam, carved with 'RGC 1935' supporting the loggia on the southern face of the house.
In tandem, Ron Crossley built an extraordinary garden, with built features made with both his own bricks and stones that were once part of the fabric of Guisborough Priory, which had been dissolved in 1540. Following the sale of the house in the early 1950s, the new owners reinvigorated the gardens, which are still beautifully cared for today by the family and are frequently open to visitors in aid of charity.
