J. Culme, The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, Woodbridge, 1996, vol. I, p. 102.
J. B. Hawkins, “Alexander Crichton - Through the Drinking Glass”, published online, p. 2.
Alexander Crichton was a Scottish silversmith who found fame creating charming novelty silver items such as the present claret-jug. He is believed to have been born in Edinburgh to a family with close connection to the silver industry but was to make his career in London where he is recorded as winning a £25 prize from the Goldsmiths’ Company for ‘presentations for designs, etc.’ (as recorded in the Art Journal, 1870 and quoted by J. Culme, The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, Woodbridge, 1996, vol. I, p. 102.). Though he is known to have made interesting items through the 1870s, it must certainly be his whimsical novelty silver-mounted claret-jugs and scent-bottles which are his most famous legacy. By the time he started to imagine and produce these zoomorphic items, Crichton was in partnership with another silversmith called Charles John Curry, trading as Crichton & Curry, ‘designers, modellers and silversmiths’ at Rathbone Place, Oxford Street, London.
The production of these claret-jugs was to be very shortlived as the demand for them collapsed in the early years of the 1880s due to a financial downturn, so most of the known extant examples date to 1881 or, like the present example, 1882. Only 34 different forms are recorded by J. B. Hawkins in his online article “Alexander Crichton - Through the Drinking Glass”. Hawkins notes that most of the designs are registered with the Patent Office but the squirrel is not.
The squirrel must rate as among the rarest form of these zoomorphic claret-jugs, Hawkins notes only two examples, one with a silver tail, previously owned by the Late Queen Mother (Hawkins, op cit., pl. 18) and the example sold at Sotheby’s, Belgravia in November 1977. While it is almost certain that the present examples and the one sold in 1977 are one and the same, unfortunately the family records do not confirm where it was acquired. It is clear that the 1970s was a fruitful time in the development of the family’s collection so it seems likely that they acquired the jug either directly at the Sotheby’s sale or through the trade not long after the sale.

2322 (19th Century Engraving of the Warwick Vase)

The Warwick Vase, now in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow, was discovered in the late 18th century by Gavin Hamilton, a Scottish art dealer, at Hadrian’s Villa in Rome. The vase was found on the villa’s extensive grounds, which Hamilton had been permitted to excavate. It was in pieces when discovered and sold by Hamilton to Sir William Hamilton, British envoy at the court of Naples, and passed from him to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick. The celebrated engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi made two etchings of the vase once its restoration was complete and published these etchings in his 1778 publication Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi, (Vases, candelabra, grave stones, sarcophagi, tripods, lamps, and ornaments designed and etched by Cavalieri Giovanni Battista Piranesi) which will undoubtedly have added to the fame of the vase.
The Earl of Warwick had intended to sell the vase to the British Museum but the sale wasn’t to come to pass so he kept it at Warwick Castle where it remained until 1978 when it was sold to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Before it could leave the country however it was declared to be of national importance and so an export license was denied and the funds were instead raised for it to stay in the country. In the decades since it was discovered it was to prove a popular form for silversmiths to copy with many examples known from the beginning of the 19th century and through into the 20th century. Another example, though just under half the weight of the present example, by the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths, Co. Ltd. passed through these rooms in 2023, selling for £11,000.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale.
Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.
We offer an online bidding service via our own platformTennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT.
By completing registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit/bank card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with us, you;
(a)authorise Tennants, if they so wish, to charge the credit/bank card given in part of full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via www.the-saleroom.com; and
(b)confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.
We do not accept any liability for any losses, however arising, as a result of a prospective buyer’s use of www.the-saleroom.com. Use of www.the-saleroom.com is subject to separate terms and conditions which do not form part of these conditions.
Requests for telephone bidding must be registered at least one hour prior to the close of the View Day. We will not accept requests on the Day of Sale. Telephone Lines are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to a minimum lot value of £500 for Fine Art Sales and £200 for all other sales.
Whilst reasonable endeavours will be made to execute absentee bidding up to the Day of Sale, Tennants will not be liable for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the Prospective Buyer’s risk.
Value added tax or any equivalent tax chargeable in the UK or elsewhere.
We conduct appropriate Due Diligence checks to comply with current Anti Money Laundering regulations for any buyer exceeding the threshold of £8,000. We reserve the right to withhold the purchased lots until such checks have been completed.
We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.
Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity.
Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.
It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from:
