Harbin is a city in Manchuria, in northeast China. During the Russian revolution many Russians fled by train to the east, ending up in Harbin, indeed by 1921 something like a third of the population of 300,000 were of Russian extraction. As the Russian currency the emigrees brought with them was now worthless their worldly possessions were instead often converted to wrought silver wares to allow them to carry their wealth with them. This was accommodated by a group of silversmiths who had also fled to Harbin and used their skills to produce items in traditional Russian styles. As there was no assay office for them to turn to and as they also had no marks to use on their wares they instead cast into the articles they produced silver marks resembling the prerevolutionary Kokoshnik marks that they were familiar with.

The Arthur Burrell Trophy: A George VI Silver Sculpture of William Shakespeare, by Sir John Cass Institute, London, 1948, Designed and Modelled by Edward Bainbridge Copnall realistically modelled, on turned ebonised base with applied silver plaque engraved with an inscription and further metal shields engraved with recipient’s names and dates of presentation 56.5cm high including plinth, the figure 47cm high, 185oz 12dwt, 5,772gr
Literature:
‘To Hull Actor’ and ‘Shakespeare’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.
The Arthur Burrell Trophy was made to commemorate Flight Colonel Arthur C. Burrell who had volunteered for the RAF in 1939 and was killed in action over Sicily in 1943. He was described as ‘... a sincere artist and an actor of great promise who will be remembered for his performances in Hull with the Playgoers’ Society in “The Yellow Jacket”; in “Will Shakespeare” with the Sharrah Drama Club and “Fantastic Flight” for the Drama League”.’ (‘To Hull Actor’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.). The article goes on to note that ‘His friends and admirers are commemorating his work by the provision of this trophy to be competed for annually by teams in the Hull area. It is a figure of Shakespeare designed and modelled by Bainbridge Copnall and will be finished in silver. The statuette will cost 150 guineas.’ (‘Shakespeare’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.)
The ‘Bainbridge Copnall’ noted in the article refers to Edward Bainbridge Copnall, M.B.E. (1903-1973), the noted British sculptor and painter. Copnall was born in Cape Town but moved to West Sussex as a child after the death of his mother. Both his father and an uncle were artists so it was perhaps inevitable that Edward would also pursue an artistic career, studying at both Goldsmiths Art School and the Royal Academy. While his initial interest was in painting he turned to sculpture in 1929 and was to receive an early commission, still among his celebrated works, to design the external sculptural scheme for the Royal Institute of British Architects headquarters in Portland place. At the time he designed the present work he was head of the Sir John Cass School of Art, a post he held from 1945 to 1953.
Andrew Penny M.B.E., the President of the Festival said “Whilst it may appear we are literally selling off the family silver, it makes much more sense to realise this statue as an asset than to present an extremely weighty trophy to a young person who might worry about the security implications of holding it for a year at home. We can do a great deal with the funds raised to achieve the great aims of the founders of the Festival Movement; “to pace each other on the road to excellence.”
The Hull Musical Festival was founded in 1906 to provide competitive classes in sections for Instrumental Music, Singing, Dance, Speech and Drama. It became a registered charity in 1978 (charity no. 507766) with the aims of ‘the advancement of the education of the public in the arts of music, dancing, literature and acting in all their branches’.The Arthur Burrell Memorial Trophy was presented to the Festival in 1948, to be awarded annually as a prize in the Speech and Drama section. The Festival continues to provide a well-supported music festival and a highly over-subscribed dance festival in Hull each year, but sadly, the Speech and Drama section fell out of fashion and has not been held for some years. The Festival awards a mixture of certificates, medals, trophies, cash prizes and bursaries to performers in music and dance, in addition to providing valuable feedback from professional adjudicators. In the coming months, the trustees will be carefully considering how to use the funds realised by the sale of the Arthur Burrell Trophy to further the aims of the charity and to best support the education and development of young performers from the local area.
Tennants are grateful to Deborah Roberts from the Goldsmiths’ Company library for her assistance in identifying the maker’s mark.

The Collection of the Late Captain Edward Cazenove (1923-2000) (Lot 2367-2369)
Devoted hunter and art collector Captain Edward "Teddy" Cazenove was born on 11 June 1923. He was brought up by his New York-born mother, Edith, at the family house of Cottesbrooke in Northamptonshire. Cazenove was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he took every chance he could to hunt.
Shortly after graduating from Oxford, he joined the Army and served diligently throughout the Second World War. He was taken prisoner in France in 1944 and was wounded attempting to escape. After the war, instead of following in his father's footsteps and joining the family firm of stockbrokers, which had been established in the 1820s, Cazenove chose to do what he loved best. He settled in Pytchley, Northamptonshire, to hunt. Highly skilled and consistently enthusiastic, Cazenove became Master of hunts in England, Scotland and Ireland. He died aged 77 in 2000.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale.
Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.
We offer an online bidding service via our own platformTennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT.
By completing registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit/bank card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with us, you;
(a)authorise Tennants, if they so wish, to charge the credit/bank card given in part of full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via www.the-saleroom.com; and
(b)confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.
We do not accept any liability for any losses, however arising, as a result of a prospective buyer’s use of www.the-saleroom.com. Use of www.the-saleroom.com is subject to separate terms and conditions which do not form part of these conditions.
Requests for telephone bidding must be registered at least one hour prior to the close of the View Day. We will not accept requests on the Day of Sale. Telephone Lines are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to a minimum lot value of £500 for Fine Art Sales and £200 for all other sales.

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity.
Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.
CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.
It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from:
