“Fold It Up! is thought as a modular installation composed of interchangeable elements made from flat sheets of material. Each of the modular elements is folded to shape, and joined with paper clips. These singular units then connect with each other to build up an organic and flexible architectural structure which can in itself assume very diverse shapes. Thanks to the flexibility granted by their folded nature, parts of the structure can be manipulated (ie, opened and closed) resulting in an interesting dynamic effect. This interactive dimension invites audience participation and allows the installation to mutate and present itself differently each day of the event. My idea is to not only to let people see an original object, but also let them discover and understand the great value and simplicity of the folding technique.

Reinventing the traditional craft of upholstery, Second Sitters brings together a new generation of contemporary upholsterers, their skills, methods and materials used rooted in upholstery tradition. Second Sitters presents an upholstery installation workshop. A sensory discovery of the skills, techniques and materials of the upholsterer. Evolving over the duration of Tent a single live collaborative piece will be upholstered by a different second sitter everyday. Each bringing their own contemporary take on the traditional craft. Launching at Tent: the Second Sitters Memory Chair – an opportunity for visitors to contribute to a very special ongoing upholstery project.

Heineken® unveils the Pop-Up City Lounge for a taste of the unexpected during the London Design Festival. The latest initiative from Heineken® explores innovative design concepts with the launch of the Heineken Pop-up City Lounge. This cutting edge pop-up concept will be making its debut at the 2014 London Design Festival before it disappears on a worldwide tour. This exciting new space is Heineken’s latest iteration of ‘social design explorations’: design to facilitate a great lounging experience. “We went back to the essence of what a lounge bar should be and asked people what they were looking for. The response was amazing. Over tens of thousands of crowdsourced Instagram images were submitted. This has certainly been a fantastic challenge, to create a visionary concept inspired by insights from all over the world, with a global team of emerging design talent”, says Mark Van Iterson, Heineken’s Global Head of Design.

The current interest in the integrity and development of materials in design is clearly indicated by the many surface & material exhibitors at Tent & Super Brands London this year. Exciting new directions in a comprehensive and diverse collection of material solutions will be revealed on stands throughout. Tent London has decided to take this a step further and has introduce a Concrete Focus Area within the show; this curated areas will focus specifically on the one material; giving our audience the opportunity to see a collection of pieces from different designers who are all using the same material within many different processes and outcomes.

In each of four ‘Nooks, Niches and Crannies’ throughout the Tent and Super Brands venues a pioneering architectural material with a unique story will be showcased. These beautiful materials – impartially selected by Materials Council – include historic British marble, once quarried by the Romans and since forgotten by time, and a lowenergy recycled glass material made chiefly from site-sourced waste. Each day the Materials Councilors will be on hand to give a guided tour of the trail.

About Materials Council The London-based Materials Council are independent materials consultants to the architecture and creative industries. We are the specialists in the research, comparison and selection of materials for architectural applications. Materials Council caters to creatives and manufacturers by supporting the architectural design process and informing the communication, implementation and development of architectural materials and new technologies. It was established in 2012 by Ian Hunter and Brad Turner, former materials researchers at Foster + Partners architects, and founding partner Architonic. www.materialscouncil.com

Britannicus Stone British marble and hard limestones Britannicus Stone supply over 20 exclusive varieties of British hard limestones and marble, offering a unique appearance and heritage. Their renowned Derbyshire limestone Hopton Wood can be found on the floors of Chatsworth House and the Houses of Parliament. Quarried across the UK, founder Orlando Boyne has rediscovered and resurrected stones first extracted by the Romans. Despite largely falling from fashion in favour of imports from continental Europe during the 19th century, the stones display colouring and figuring to rival any other. Extracted from Cornwall to Cumbria, some of the stones are incredibly rare, with only a couple of blocks remaining, while others are available in commercial quantities. www.britannicus-stone.co.uk

Oltremateria by Surfaces and Design Water-based, mineral surfacing material Supplied in the UK by Surfaces and Design, Oltremateria is an innovative and versatile waterbased surfacing material with a low environmental impact and a wide range of completely customisable decorative finishes. Made from crushed minerals and applied with a trowel, Oltremateria is incredibly flexible. It can be used internally or externally, continuously across all horizontal and vertical surfaces and even in direct contact with water. Oltremateria can be seamlessly applied directly to any substrate, including ceramics and glass, and is entirely recyclable. Requiring only a thin coating, just 1–3mm, it is ideal for projects that require limited structural loads, transportation interiors and furniture. www.surfacesanddesign.com

Richlite by Surface Matter Distributed exclusively in the UK by Surface Matter, Richlite is a paper composite offering a more sustainable surface material. Introduced over 70 years ago to the Aerospace industry, Richlite was brought to the UK for use as skateboard ramps and chopping boards, before being adopted by the A&D community. Many layers of high quality decorative paper from recycled or sustainable sources are layered, pressed and bound with resin into a dense, durable material. Worked in a similar way to wood, Richlite performs like the densest hardwood and will develop a natural patina over time. Richlite is commonly used for worktops, cladding, signage and furniture. www.surfacematter.co.uk

Trash Glass by Golondrina Design Low-energy, recycled glass material Trash Glass is the outcome of product designer Diana Simpson’s research into closedloop waste usage. The results are tiles, surfaces and objects produced by upcycling glass waste as the primary raw material. Empty glass bottles are collected from businesses in close proximity to the project, minimising transportation and engaging the community. They are then cleaned, crushed and moulded (using a bio-resin as the binding material) creating new glass products without the massive quantities of energy required to melt glass. Trash Glass is the first material in a series of products being developed by Golondrina Design under the Trash brand, using reclaimed waste materials as raw ingredients. www.golondrinadesign.com

Studio TILT are presenting the first ever codesigned Press Office. Here is a glimpse into the collaborative workshop and initial design stage of the process. Our codesign approach can be applied to any brief so we thought that working with Tent and the journalists and exhibitors that use the space will create a unique opportunity to explore the scenario of a well briefed, designed and functioning Press Office.

Tent London is the first event world wide to implement the artcode as a unique creative interaction experience for the visitors to the event. The aestheticodes design team have created a series of interactive artcodes across the event that can be scanned with an Aestheticode/Tent app. Easy to draw, playful and poetic, the artcode puts the human back into Computer Human Interaction.

Visit the Aestheticodes stand at T5 J06 to experience the artcode first hand. The Aestheticode design team will be demonstrating the technology, teaching visitors to draw their own artcodes, showcasing experiments and prototypes and offering in depth artcode workshops in illustration, papercutting, screen printing and more.

This provides the ideal backdrop to a wide-ranging exhibition focused on the themes of curiosity, experimentation and innovation. The products on display will represent the finest and most exciting examples of new Norwegian design, combining pieces already in production with prototypes of the products of tomorrow, with an emphasis on furniture and space.
