Each year over 1,200 International & UK lifestyle press visit, and this year we want to give them something special and unique.

This year Tent London & Icon Printing teamed up to offer a unique opportunity to create a limited edition design to be printed on a tote bag, which will be distributed during the London Design Festival.

This opportunity was open to designers from all backgrounds – from illustration, product, lighting, graphics, architecture and ceramics – we were overwhelmed by all the amazing designs that were entered into the competition.

2015 Winners are: Kate Farley, Jess Gray, Thom Lambert, Matt Lewis & Adrian Zorzano.

PRESS HUB

BY ONGL DESIGN+MAKE “Tent is growing up.” They said.

“That must mean that Tent’s more of a glamper than a camper these days then?” We said.

With a bag (van!) packed full of materials characteristic of tensile structures Ongl will be pitching up at Tent London 2015 with their design for the Press Hub at the Old Truman Brewery.

Using white polypropylene rope to weave, respond and engage with the architectural features of the host building, the installation is envisaged as a semi-permeable shelter within which Journalists, Exhibitors and VIPs can gather, work and take a breather.

Beneath the shadow play of the structure; with grass underfoot; and furnished with selected pieces that share the same honest, contemporary aesthetic that we do at Ongl Design+Make; the Press Hub strikes a comfortable balance between urban and countryside; between work and play – for those using it and for us designing it.

From their studio in Cardiff and our workshop in Carmarthenshire Ongl combine Interior Architectural Design, Carpentry, Joinery, Painting and Digital Fabrication to design, make and fit complete solutions for interiors, exhibitions, popups and custom-made features; a skillset they have put to good use for the Press Hub.

‘The Mixer’ is a tectonic and tactile temporary installation sponsored

by Cemento for Tent London 2015 Project Spaces that celebrates the work of contemporary concrete creators and the emerging ‘concrete revolution’.

The collaboration with architects Russ + Henshaw, takes the form of a bar that encourages ‘punters’ to interact with materials in a hands on way on both a sensory and practical level. The sculptural back bar, envisaged as a cabinet of curiosities for material experimentation, forms a dramatic backdrop for the activities.

FINNISH FORM 35

With its iconic classics, Finland has a long history in furniture design.

Finnish Form, created by Tent, aims to showcase the future form of Finnish design; illustrated through a curated presentation of 18 designers, brands and manufacturers, building toward Finland’s centenary celebrations in 2017.

Finnish design shows its new form at Tent London. The Finnish Design Pavilion alongside eleven other country showcases form a cross section of the international field of design. With its iconic classics Finland has a long history in furniture design. Finnish Form brings the new and the interesting from the Finnish design scene to the London Design Festival.

In addition to the makers of 2015 the Finnish Form pays tribute to a legend. Juhani Pallasmaa, architect, professor and writer, will give a lecture as a part of the Super Talks programme. The talk is about the famous Finnish artist, craftsman and designer, Tapio Wirkkala. Wirkkala (1915–1985) worked in various materials and media, clients including world known companies in Finland as well as Italy, Germany and Mexico.

Ó: THE DESIGN & CRAFTS COUNCIL OF IRELAND The Design & Crafts Council of Ireland presents ‘Ó’, an exhibition of new work from Ireland’s designers and makers at Tent London as part of London Design Festival 2015. ‘Ó’, meaning ‘from’ in Gaelic, presents the story of Ireland as a source of creative ideas and making and explains how its craft heritage inspires new and contemporary design. The exhibition will feature the latest work from contemporary Irish designers such as Snug, Ceadogán, Aodh Furniture, Donna Bates and Hennessy & Byrne.

Three ateliers will be set up as micro-production spaces within the exhibition and designer makers from Ireland will demonstrate their making techniques throughout the four days of Tent. The ateliers will include leading Irish companies such as Mourne Textiles who will also have work in the exhibition.

KCDF (Korea Craft and Design Foundation) will be presenting Constancy & Change in Korean Traditional Craft 2015, at Tent London.

The traditional Korean crafts, a body of creative disciplines more than five thousand years old, will be presented in a major art exhibition at a major venue of the internationally-acclaimed London Design Festival.

Under the theme of ‘Su-su Deom-deom Eun-eun’ (Simple, Calm, Subtle), this exhibition will feature one hundred ninety works, in six categories, by twenty-three artists, merging the graceful, classical beauty of traditional Korean crafts with modern aesthetic sensibilities.

These artists are perpetuating and extending Korean craft traditions in metal, ceramics, paper, textile, bamboo, and lacquer.

Connected Craft With technology and innovation constantly moving forward, it’s not surprising to also see the immediate rise of the opposite. Which means this year we’re really noticing a return to “the craft”.

Designers have been sharing with the Creativepool community exclusive behind the scenes imagery, giving their followers insight into how they create their work.

Take a look at textile designer Karin Carlander’s site, where she posted a lovely photo story on how she created the designs for Tent.

Ceramicists are also an excellent example of a return to craft, and they have really taken over the home accessory market this year with their tactile practice.

Check out some of our favourites: Sisal Studio, Tortus Copenhagen, and 573degress.

Minimal Playground Minimalism has been seen across the creative sectors for a few years, permeating interiors, fashion and even the web. Seemingly quite a mature topic, it has taken a surprising turn in 2015 where we see designers injecting exuberance and youth into their collections. Assemble Studio’s playground for RIBA is a sublime example of this.

Also check out our coverage of artist, Przemek Pyszczek who’s been influenced

by Plattenbauen playgrounds. Looking at Tent we’ve found; Primary Grey, RForm, Tabanda, Galula & Malafor are all “playing” around with this trend.

Raw Brutalism Across the creative industries we can definitely see a return to the 70s. Not only psychedelic graphic design and festival fashion, but also another movement from the era: Brutalism. It’s impacting areas of architecture, interior and product design…not to mention Instagram hashtags. Just as rose gold permeated a few years ago, concrete as a material and texture is getting its moment in the limelight. Phillips Studio, Concrete Jungles, Charlie Crowther-Smith & Colin Parker are all experimenting with it.

We think more designers will be exploring this medium through to 2016, too.

He worked for numerous Finnish companies as well as in Italy (Venice), Germany and Mexico. His designs were often inspired by nature, but his work is also frequently based on geometry.

The lecturer, a close friend of Wirkkala’s, analyses his personality, design themes and sources of inspiration, and presents his exceptionally wide and varied production.
