PRESS HUB BY ONGL DESIGN+MAKE “Tent is growing up.” They said. “That must mean that Tent’s more of a glamper than a camper these days then?” We said. With a bag (van!) packed full of materials characteristic of tensile structures Ongl will be pitching up at Tent London 2015 with their design for the Press Hub at the Old Truman Brewery. Using white polypropylene rope to weave, respond and engage with the architectural features of the host building, the installation is envisaged as a semi-permeable shelter within which Journalists, Exhibitors and VIPs can gather, work and take a breather. Beneath the shadow play of the structure; with grass underfoot; and furnished with selected pieces that share the same honest, contemporary aesthetic that we do at Ongl Design+Make; the Press Hub strikes a comfortable balance between urban and countryside; between work and play – for those using it and for us designing it. From their studio in Cardiff and our workshop in Carmarthenshire Ongl combine Interior Architectural Design, Carpentry, Joinery, Painting and Digital Fabrication to design, make and fit complete solutions for interiors, exhibitions, popups and custom-made features; a skillset they have put to good use for the Press Hub.

Stack is a subscription service for independent magazines – you never know what they’re going to deliver next, but you do know it will be a beautiful, intelligent magazine you probably wouldn’t otherwise have seen. This year they’ve brought a selection of their favourite titles to share with visitors to Tent London, so stop by, have a flick through the magazines on show, and geek out about the finer points of independent print.

‘The Mixer’ is a tectonic and tactile temporary installation sponsored by Cemento for Tent London 2015 Project Spaces that celebrates the work of contemporary concrete creators and the emerging ‘concrete revolution’. The collaboration with architects Russ + Henshaw, takes the form of a bar that encourages ‘punters’ to interact with materials in a hands on way on both a sensory and practical level. The sculptural back bar, envisaged as a cabinet of curiosities for material experimentation, forms a dramatic backdrop for the activities.

The pieces are well-designed, aesthetic objects, as well as vessels which contain the secrets of the creative process itself. Each piece involves a particular philosophy inextricably linked to its creation. All items on display do, however, have a common denominator: they are all examples of great design from Poland.

LONDON DESIGN GUIDE of minds
All eyes are on London as a centre of finance and global affairs. But the capital’s popular allure comes from the strength of its creative industries. With tourists, students and young professionals pitching up in the millions to participate, the city has developed a spirited, multicultural creative clout. And it never stands still.

LONDON DESIGN GUIDE 4th edition, edited by Max Fraser
London
LONDON DESIGN GUIDE focuses on the capital’s thriving design scene: its boutiques, vintage dealers, design galleries and creative workshops. We’ve plucked out the destinations that best reflect that scene and reviewed them by neighbourhood, devising user-friendly maps to help navigate the city’s sprawl. Of course, behind every venue are talented individuals who implement their vision with gusto. In this edition, we’ve also interviewed personalities from Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic to veteran retailer Zeev Aram, from Marylebone trailblazers to East London mavericks. And we’ve gained access to private studios run by Barber Osgerby and Fredrikson Stallard. No other London guide boasts such widespread coverage or such entrée.
Buy a copy of the guide and tackle each area by foot, to savour the local flavour. Allow yourself to get lost and remember to look up – the city’s peculiarities are often above head height. When you’re running low on energy, enjoy a coffee, cocktail or meal at one of the restaurants or bars we recommend in each chapter. Even die-hard devotees of design will discover something new. CREATIVEPOOL Talking 2015 trends with entrepreneur and founder of Creativepool, Michael Tomes
At the core of Tent London, we thrive on showcasing the work of top design from around the globe, to help people expand their network and build healthy businesses. So, when we discovered Creativepool, we knew it was the start of a great friendship. Guardians of the creative industries, the Creativepool community bridges the gap between the professional online and offline worlds we live in. From social media management to filling a job role, this hardworking team is out to save you time and money, so you can get on with the next groundbreaking project. Everyday, thousands of designers flock to their site to stay updated on the latest industry news, trends and new job opportunities. But the best bit is uncovering inspiring creative work from across their community. And with a rapidly growing community of over 160,000 creatives, they really are the heartbeat of contemporary creativity. We sat down over a coffee with founder, Michael Tomes. From the unique advantage of analysing new work being uploaded to the site, reported on and judged in Creativepool’s 2015 Annual, he lent his expert insight to show us what we expect to see pop out at Tent London this year: “2015 has been a very interesting year for design so far, we can see designers really exploring new areas – whether looking to the past or future. There is a lot of beautiful work out there today; we love to share our appreciation for that. And with our office in Clerkenwell, a hub for interior and architecture industry, it is always exciting see what’s next in the windows of leaders like Vitra, Fritz Hansen, Zaha Hadid, and Tom Dixon.”
www.creativepool.com/annual
Connected Craft With technology and innovation constantly moving forward, it’s not surprising to also see the immediate rise of the opposite. Which means this year we’re really noticing a return to “the craft”. Designers have been sharing with the Creativepool community exclusive behind the scenes imagery, giving their followers insight into how they create their work. Take a look at textile designer Karin Carlander’s site, where she posted a lovely photo story on how she created the designs for Tent. Ceramicists are also an excellent example of a return to craft, and they have really taken over the home accessory market this year with their tactile practice. Check out some of our favourites: Sisal Studio, Tortus Copenhagen, and 573degress. Minimal Playground Minimalism has been seen across the creative sectors for a few years, permeating interiors, fashion and even the web. Seemingly quite a mature topic, it has taken a surprising turn in 2015 where we see designers injecting exuberance and youth into their collections. Assemble Studio’s playground for RIBA is a sublime example of this. Also check out our coverage of artist, Przemek Pyszczek who’s been influenced by Plattenbauen playgrounds. Looking at Tent we’ve found; Primary Grey, RForm, Tabanda, Galula & Malafor are all “playing” around with this trend.
Raw Brutalism Across the creative industries we can definitely see a return to the 70s. Not only psychedelic graphic design and festival fashion, but also another movement from the era: Brutalism. It’s impacting areas of architecture, interior and product design…not to mention Instagram hashtags. Just as rose gold permeated a few years ago, concrete as a material and texture is getting its moment in the limelight. Phillips Studio, Concrete Jungles, Charlie Crowther-Smith & Colin Parker are all experimenting with it. We think more designers will be exploring this medium through to 2016, too. Making New Waves Think you’re setting the next trends? Submit your work into Creativepool’s 2016 Annual to get featured in front of industry influencers across their various design sectors. Just giving you a heads up, submissions will be opening in October.

A radical change in direction from anything Moroso had done in the past, Arad’s collection overcame widespread scepticism to become a celebrated milestone in design history. At Tent 2015, the two pioneers discuss the origins of their partnership – from its first collection in 1991 to its latest in 2015. Chair: Jonn Elledge, Editor of CityMetric Panel: Patrizia Moroso & Ron Arad 18:00—19:30hrs Tapio Wirkkala: Eyes at the Finger Tips Finnish Form Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) is a legendary Finnish artist, craftsman and designer, who worked in various materials and media from the scale of a postage stamp or a piece of jewelry, to household and art objects, all the way to architecture and a piece of land art the size of a Lapland field. The objects that Il Laboratorio dell’Imperfetto designs and creates in its workshop in Italy are both unique and exclusive, characters which are implied by the brand name’s allusion to the imperfect. Fibreglass is the main material they have chosen for the creation of these works because it is light and resistant to any weather conditions, so suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Imperfettolab is founded by Verter Turroni and Emanuela Ravelli. Contact Via Viole 128/130 Gambettola (FC) 47035 ITALY info@imperfettolab.com www.imperfettolab.com
