DOMINIQUE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD THE WORK OF DOMINIQUE KEELEY WORDS: LAUREN ABINERI
Dominique Keeley’s practice centres on the fabulous yet faltering realm of the celebrity. Keeley’s controlled painterly realism pops and fizzes and we see cottoncandy coloured portraits of celebrities from the past and today; from Paris Hilton and Tara Reid living it up in the clubs in ‘01 to the squeaky clean pop duo, Jedward* (particularly favoured subjects). Underneath the saccharine colours lies a hint of the dark fascination we have with fame, and oh yes, plenty of fan-girl-flavoured excitement. Here, hyper-consumerism meets hyper-colour.
TEO: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE CELEB/TRASH CULTURE? DOMINIQUE: For something that’s so superficial, it’s very complex. I’m in two minds about it and that’s essentially how I make work; I’m being curious and trying to understand and explore things that I have a love-hate relationship with or things that work together that are opposed to each other like tragicomedy or the guiltypleasure. I’m always trying to focus on both sides at once without taking a stance on being for or against. I’m very much in the Oscar Wilde ‘Art for Art’s sake’ camp, I don’t think art should be moral or didactic. It shouldn’t tell people what to think, it should start people thinking. I think that’s really what art is: something that evokes feeling and thought and conversations – an invitation to look deeper into ourselves and the world around us to find your own conclusions. The whole celebrity trash tabloid industry I find quite disguising but deeply alluring. It’s a guilty pleasure. I certainly take a very humanist approach to celebrities – I know they’re just normal people going about their lives with this whole huge industry of illusion built up around them, and I know there are worse things in life that can happen to you than being famous but I’d find being in the public eye appalling. Being open to that much scrupulous attention, the pressure of global-scale bullying that teases you about your weight, paparazzi trying to provoke you into lashing out or having a breakdown – it’s fucked up, no question. And yet if someone offered me fame, I’d take it. Who wouldn’t? It’s that weird conflict. 13
T E O M A G
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE PAPARAZZI? THEIR ROLE IS A LITTLE BIT LIKE FORCING THE PUBLIC EYE! I find paparazzi to have a really fucked up job; it’s professional stalking! Anyone who’s watched TMZ can tell that it’s ravenous and aggressive mobbing, or they try and intimidate and provoke to take the most dramatic, unflattering photo possible. Yet it’s those photos I find so fascinating. That raw vulnerability is so beautifully human. And I hope there is a difference between my tabloid paintings and the tabloids themselves. I paint it because it makes that connection to the human experience while tabloids try and disconnect it with headlines and stories that turn them into products and caricatures. But those headlines are interesting in themselves and some of my work removes the human side all together to leave just the headlines and the language. ‘My ass is out of control!’, ‘Young, wasted and addicted to surgery!’ and ‘10 million dollar scab fest’ are some of the ones I have up in my studio. It’s finely tuned language, every single word is as provocative as possible and the aesthetics too; bold fonts and fluro oranges and pinks. It’s hyper consumerism, made to push all your buttons all at once. It’s absurd and ridiculous but kind of genius. In my Non Threatenting Boys exhibition I looked at the consumer language that teen magazines use to sell teen idol boys to young girls; so silly and sugary like ‘Summer Crush Special!’ and ‘Which 1D boy would date you?’ – it’s nonsense, but I say that with nostalgic
14
affection. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with consuming celebrity and pop and boy bands. But it’s so important to have an awareness.
I LOVE YOUR PORTRAYAL OF JUSTIN BIEBER. HE LOOKS SO GLAM!
I did some work of Justin Bieber before he turned all bad boy bizzle, when he was still seen as that really saccharine, floppy-haired sweetheart. It’s kind of interesting how differently the same work is seen now he’s associated with the whole child star gone wrong shtick. But a lot of my work about pop idols and boy bands isn’t about them or the industry. I was focused on fandom and especially fan girl culture, less on how a media is put out there (like with my Non Threatening Boys show and the tabloid works) and more on how that media is consumed by the individual and fandom subcultures. Fandom just gets me so excited! It’s punk. Geek punk.
HOW WOULD YOU TIMELINE-WISE SITUATE YOUR SUBJECTS? Nostalgia is such a big thing with my generation right now, and of course with me too – 90s nostalgia and childhood nostalgia. I think I deal with nostalgia in a different way by including subjects from the here and now. I just wanted to be looking at what was going on in the 2000s and cyber space but use that nostalgia for childhood. It’s so prevalent on the internet in aesthetic choices.

TELL US ABOUT JEDWARD. IS IT AN OBSESSION? Jedward, oh my gosh, I love them so much! I first saw Jedward on Eurovision in 2011 and I remember the moment just so clearly: my jaw dropped and I just spent the whole day with my mum looking up Youtube videos of them. They were so funny and so cute, these ethereal twins with their huge blonde quiffs and glittery outfits, singing and dancing to Britney spears just jumping around and loving life with boundless energy and optimism. It was literally like discovering unicorns exist. I started making work about them straight away but it was almost like I wasn’t making work about them because they were this perfect embodiment of my work; everything I had been thinking about and studying – camp vs kitsch, pop, sexual ambiguousness, the double and the female gaze etc. They were this perfect manifestation of everything I wanted to communicate with my work. It’s like I imagined them into existence. When I took a gap year in London in 2012 I was privileged enough to meet them, spend time with them and so much of their fan base, while experiencing a lot of the complexities and comradery of a fandom community. It was so much more of a fascinating and wonderful experience than I ever even thought. But whether I’m obsessed with Jedward is kind of hard to answer, which is ironic considering most of my work over the years is about being a Jedward fan girl. I came into the fandom knowing I wanted to make work about them so it’s hard to know where my work starts and fandom begins. But that’s
not to say anything I’ve made featuring Jedward wasn’t sincere, because it was. I do wonder if I’d have done something like go on live TV with them dressed in posters if I wasn’t making work as this ultimate fan girl artist image. Probably yes. Or I definitely would have wanted to. That’s what art allows me to do: let go of those inhibitions. I’m a closet exhibitionist.
YOUR PRACTICE ENGAGES WITH A GREAT DEAL OF FAN GIRL CULTURE. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW? I’m trying to capture an idea, a fan identity. The obsession comes from [the celebrity’s] image, their twitter and the fandom’s perception of it, including my perception. It’s sort of separate from them; it’s its own identity. Even though my studio and my Tumblr and Instagram can look like a crazy psychedelic rainbow shrine to Jedward, I only have a couple of Polaroid shots of us together in my house. How I feel about them as individuals I guess I keep more close to me but then it’s not exactly a secret that I totally adore them. I’ve always wanted them to sit for me for a painting – just a deadpan portrait as John and Edward for maybe the Moran prize. But I find that idea incredibly daunting. It’s like I’d rather wear the mask of this insane obsessed fan girl than face the vulnerability of just straight admiration. *Jedward is a pop band consisting of two Irish male singers, twins John and Edward, who rose to fame during the 2009 UK X-Factor season. They both feature heavily in Dominique’s work.

HOW TO HAVE YOUR BURRITO
/AND EAT IT TOO
FEBRUARY ISSUE #5
51
T E O M A G
A CHAT WITH A HIGH ACHIEVING, BURRITO EATING, FUN LOVING LADY! If you’ve been with TEO from the beginning, the name Phebe Rendulić might ring a bell, but you may not know that she’s more than just our contributor and photographer. In addition to having worked for South Australian print and online publications and having her work published in RUSSH, Phebe also sings, plays keyboard and was once in a musical duo called Radio Spectacular. She’s also been commissioned to create artwork using embroidery and has won a stack of competitions! Phew…tired yet? I know we are! TEO sat down with Phebe to find out about what makes this burrito-loving, high achiever tick.
TEO: PHOTOGRAPHER, SINGER, KEYBOARDIST, EMBROIDERER AND COMPETITION WINNER; I’M SURE THERE’S SOMETHING WE’RE MISSING?
PHEBE: Well, burrito-freak is definitely missing from that list.
YOU REALISE YOU’RE A HIGH ACHIEVER, RIGHT? I’ve honestly never thought of myself as a high achiever, actually. But I guess when I look back at all the things I’ve done over the years it certainly looks that way. I think I’ve just been fortunate enough to surround myself with other creative people, which is what keeps me motivated.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE TIME TO DO ALL THESE CREATIVE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE? You make the time, really. If it’s something you’re passionate enough about then that’s pretty much all you focus on.
IS THERE SOMETHING YOU PREFER TO DO OVER ANOTHER, OR DO YOU JUST CREATE WHAT COMES TO YOU AT THE TIME? I really enjoy doing embroidery commissions at 52
the moment. I love the random things that people come up with for me to create for them — whether it’s filthy words or little in-jokes that I don’t even get. I love creating something for someone that has a very personal meaning to it.
BEING COMMISSIONED FOR EMBROIDERY IS QUITE A SPECIFIC THING TO BE COMMISSIONED FOR. HOW DOES THAT COME ABOUT? I think it really started back when I was younger and my mum wanted help with embroideries for things she was making for her shop, so she taught me the stitches I needed to know, and it kept me busy for a while. It wasn’t until my final year at art school where I decided I wanted to embroider a little portrait series and I was so excited by it. Then I forgot about it for a few years until about two years ago when I started making little embroideries of song lyrics and posting them on Instagram. I had a friend ask me to make a whole series for his girlfriend at the time and I absolutely loved doing it. I’m very lucky that I usually have an embroidery piece on the go at all times so that makes me happy. TEOMAGAZINE.COM.AU

“I THINK I’VE JUST BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SURROUND MYSELF WITH OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE, WHICH IS WHAT KEEPS ME MOTIVATED.”
ARE THERE OTHER ARTISTIC ENDEAVOURS YOU’RE THINKING OF GIVING A GO? I’ve always had a little soft spot for jewellery. When I was at art school I did a semester of jewellery making and I had a little moment where I had to decide whether I wanted to go down that path or the photography path. I went to art school originally for photography and I got a little excited by jewellery making along the way, but I knew I’d always end up doing photography. Nothing could really hold me back — I could always give jewellery a go at some point.
YOU HAVE A LOT OF FILM CAMERAS IN YOUR HOUSE. DO YOU THINK THERE’S STILL ROOM FOR THAT TYPE OF PHOTOGRAPHY? Oh gosh, if I could afford to shoot exclusively with film then believe me, I would! There are definitely people out there who only shoot with film and I’m insanely jealous – I miss shooting Polaroids. Before I studied I only ever shot Polaroids or with my Lomo film cameras and it was actually a shock when I was given a DSLR camera because I had no idea how to use it. If I had a client who had the budget for film I’d be all over it.
DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR INTEREST YOU LIKE TO SHOOT? BURRITOS, MAYBE? Have you never eaten a burrito? They’re like pouches of love. I actually love shooting food. It obviously helps when the food you’re shooting is already good looking. I also love fashion — fashion will always be my love. It’s so exciting and there’s just so much room to move with fashion photography. When I’m working with a great team, there is no greater feeling for me than creating images that you’ve all put so much effort into.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING INVOLVED WITH THE TEO TEAM ON YOUR FIRST EDITORIAL SHOOT? Every shoot I’ve done for TEO has been an absolute delight for me. Susannah [TEO Editor] is one of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure of working with and I love how she trusts in me. There is always such an excellent team of people on each shoot and that’s so important. FEBRUARY ISSUE #5

HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO KEEP LEARNING AND ADAPTING AS AN ARTIST? In my opinion and from my own experiences, it’s very important. The world is constantly changing and evolving and there are always new technologies and techniques coming about. It depends on the type of artist you are though. For example, if you decide you only want to shoot with film instead of digital then there’s nothing wrong with that at all. But if you’re an artist who is excited by change, then it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I will admit though, I still have a lot of Polaroid films in my fridge that I refuse to let go of. I took a while to embrace digital cameras.
DO YOU HAVE AN ARTIST YOU LOOK UP TO? There’s a contemporary classical composer called Philip Glass who is the greatest inspiration to me. He’s 77 and still touring the world, performing and constantly writing new music. Music is his life and that’s what’s inspiring to me. He will never stop doing what he loves.
SPEAKING OF MUSIC, YOU WERE IN A MUSICAL DUO THAT WAS QUITE SUCCESSFUL.
YOU HAVE A HOUSE FULL OF COOL, COLOURFUL, QUIRKY LITTLE BITS AND BOBS. IS THERE A REASON COLOUR SPEAKS TO YOUR TASTE? I honestly have no idea why I love colour so much. I just love surrounding myself with bright things
and pastel things and pink things; I think my work reflects this also.
I’m definitely proud of my ability to work with
colours well. I think I learned that from my mum
who’s a quilter and she’d spend weeks planning out quilts by moving the little pieces of fabrics around until they all worked together perfectly before
sewing them up. Although, she mainly likes dull
greens and ‘country-style’ colours, so I have no idea where this pastel obsession came from.
THE JESUS STATUES…THEY’RE A BIT LEFT OF CENTRE FROM THE COLOUR AND QUIRKINESS? Even though I’m not a religious person I still find
myself fascinated by aspects of it. I watch a lot of shows on Mormons and cults, and I just find it so
interesting. I’m definitely drawn to the aesthetics
We were called Radio Spectacular and it was with my partner at the time. It was just the two of us and we were so lucky to get one of our songs on two different national commercials as well as on an episode of Offspring. We were pretty awkward to watch on stage I think, but I hope that was just part of our charm. Adelaide is a pretty tough crowd but we had our little successes and that made it all worthwhile.
I’m going to take a little time out actually. I’ve got

A CHAT WITH THE SWELLERS HOW THEY GOT PAID FOR THEIR PASSION WORDS: EBONY STORY PHOTOGRAPHY: SUPPLIED 102
TEOMAGAZINE.COM.AU
T E O M A G
TEO Magazine had a chat with Nick Diener from American punk band The Swellers, who have been going strong for over a decade but have recently decided to call it quits. Brothers Nick and Jonathan Diener formed the band in 2002 with a couple of mates, and in no time at all The Swellers was born. At the fresh age of 15 the boys’ reputation snowballed and now, 12 years later, Nick looks back on life with the band – constant touring, interesting riders, rowdy crowds and returning to a normal life when it’s all said and done.
TEO: I’M SORRY TO HEAR THAT THE SWELLERS ARE CALLING IT A DAY AFTER 12 YEARS TOGETHER. YOU MUST HAVE HAD SOME GREAT MEMORIES AFTER BEING TOGETHER FOR THAT LONG. NICK DIENER: It’s kind of crazy looking back at everything, just because I was 15 years old when we started and there were so many different things in my life throughout all of that. So when I think of a certain year of The Swellers or a certain record that came out or a song that I wrote, there’s always a point in my life where I’m like, “Oh my god I was graduating high school when I did that,” or “I got married when this happened”. It’s kind of crazy, but that’s my timeline basically.
YOU’RE PLAYING SOUNDWAVE 2015 AS ONE OF YOUR LAST SHOWS; ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING ANYONE IN PARTICULAR PLAY? Yeah, absolutely! They were cool enough to have us along, and the weirdest thing is the fact that King 810 is on it. We grew up with those guys and they’ve always been in bands and we’ve had The Swellers touring for eight years and now we’ve just decided that, okay this is it. But now, King 810 is just starting to tour big time. So it’s weird because we’ve completely pulled it off as far as music goes, but it’s just going to be so cool to be on the road with those guys. Let alone so far away in the world. So yeah, Flint Michigan guys just hanging out − it’ll be good.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PRE-SHOW RITUALS OR ANYTHING YOU LIKE TO ORDER IN YOUR RIDER? If we’re lucky enough to get a rider I usually really love enough water to last me through the day. I’m always drinking a tonne of water. But the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten in my rider was just a clean t-shirt! I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s great when you’re soaking wet and you’re like, “Ah sweet! A black t-shirt, I really need one of those”. We’re pretty easy, pretty chill, we don’t ask for much and we don’t

need much. We just get up there; play and sweat, refuel and we’re ready to do it again at the next show.
DO YOU HAVE ANY STAND OUT GIGS? There are a couple, but the ones that really stand out are where the crowds are really still and boring. And I have to realise that, hey, at least they’re watching. I can’t get too mad at them because I have to think about what I would be doing if I were watching a band, and I’d be standing and taking it all in. Every once in a while we’ll play a show and it usually only takes five or six people to go crazy and get the whole crowd into it. When we did our headliner Australian tour, there were some really good shows in that. It was cool to see that we could bring out some rowdy and fun loving people on our own as opposed to playing a festival where sometimes people will just eat anything up, which is still cool and we get to play for all kinds of new audiences.
TOURING MUST BE PRETTY FULL ON! DO YOU EVER GET ANY TIME TO SIGHT SEE? We usually get a lot of time, depending on where we are. When we were in Australia last time in 2011 we had a bunch of days off so we were able to walk around in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane; but when we’re touring in a place like the States, we’re pretty much doing a show every day and driving all the time. Hopefully we’ve seen pretty much everything there is to see in the past eight years, and now we’d much rather go and hang out with our friends when we’re in a new city or go see a tourist attraction or something.
DID YOU FIND GETTING INTO THE MUSIC SCENE AND GETTING YOUR MUSIC HEARD DIFFICULT? I KNOW IT’S TOUGH TO BREAK OUT HERE IN AUSTRALIA; HOW IS IT IN AMERICA? Well, we got started so young and so locally that we didn’t really purposefully try to get our music out there, it just slowly seeped out – it was baby steps. We started to play our first shows in Port Michigan and really packing out a local venue there, and we were like, “Wow this is great!” And then we had some friends from Chicago come and play in Michigan, so then they had us come and play in Chicago. And then so and so saw us and he said, “Hey come to Ohio”. So we were driving four or five hours away to go play shows, and then we did a little bit of Warped Tour, spent a couple days here and there, and so we were slowly branching out. And then we got signed to a little bit of a bigger label and started doing bigger tours, and then we signed to a bigger label and did even bigger tours. So you know, it was a process and yeah it was tough, definitely tough to get your music out there and be heard. And you could say that we got lucky, but I don’t know how lucky it is if it took 10 years for everything to fall into place. People often ask me online and at shows what my advice is for a young musician on how to get big. And I’m like, “Oh dude I don’t know, I’ve been trying to figure that out still!” That’s probably why the band is taking a break.

DID YOU HAVE A GOAL WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED OUT? OR WERE YOU JUST GOING TO SEE HOW FAR YOU COULD GET? At first it was just that we wanted to play music with friends, which sounds really clichéd, but that was legitimately it. We just loved the way it sounded. Getting together and, I think, the first time we really jammed we played a whole bunch of Get Up Kids and Weezer songs in the basement and we were like, “Yeah cool, let’s be a band”. I already had a couple of songs written and it was weird when we started because my brother and I, we moved across the state, two or three hours from our friends – and then when we wanted to start the band a year later, we just recruited our old buddies from our old town. So we were based in two different cities. And since then a bunch of members have come and gone, but since 2008/2009 we’ve had our steady line up that everybody seems to know.
WAS THE BAND YOUR FULL TIME JOB? Yeah, it probably shouldn’t have been my full time job but living where I lived, it was so inexpensive to pay rent at a house. The cost of living was really low. So I was able to go on tour and kind of make ends meet just from touring and you know merch sales and stuff. But I couldn’t really buy anything extra. So sometimes I didn’t have money for gas or food or whatever, so it was kind of tough at times. I started recording bands out of my house; I have a little studio and that was kind of like my job when I was between tours, and so that made my grocery money for a bit. And that’s actually my full time job now. I do about four or five things for money because I’m pretty scatter brained and I’ll go crazy if I just do one thing. I would go crazy if I recorded bands for a living all the time! It’s pretty much like you’re a babysitter for bands; you have to deal with them sucking at their instrument and yelling at each other. It gets to be a lot.
HAS MUSIC EVER INTERFERED WITH OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE? You know, it really should have; but I had a really awesome girlfriend and she became a really awesome wife, so I got lucky that she was okay with me being gone. But with me being on tour all the time she’d be at home saying she missed me and that sucked, but she never said to come home or to quit my dreams, or give up. So I was pretty lucky. Now that I’m home all the time, she’ll go out of town for a few days and I’m freaking out and wondering how I left her for three months at a time – I was such an idiot. Yeah, I am kind of screwed up in the head; I haven’t had a normal life since eight years ago. I pretty much graduated high school and then was on tour. So I’m adjusting to civilisation now, trying to figure out how to be a normal human and not have to live out of a suitcase or a backpack. And I like it − it’s good!
CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT LIFE AFTER THE BAND? Well, I’m always writing music. I always have a guitar and some songs going on, and I have a bunch of friends who have always been like me, and saying, “If you want, with The Swellers, we should do this”. Some of them are song writers that I really look up to so it’s like, “Oh this would be cool,” and you know, perhaps we could try something new and fresh. I have a thousand bands that I want to start, but I’m in no rush, so I’ll just wait for everything to come organically I guess. Personally, I’m studying to become a personal trainer, so that will become another job I have outside of recording bands and being a musician. But yeah, I’m trying to take all of my passions and things I like and get paid for doing them, hopefully!

MODELS OF THE MOMENT
OUT OF THIS WORLD BEAUTIES: KIARRA AND ANGEL It’s a parallel universe for our cover editorial girls; despite their modelling success, they are still growing up in their regional South Australian towns of Port Augusta and Port Pirie where their days are filled with the adventures of high school, hanging out with their friends, playing sport and exhausting all their energy doing ‘boy stuff’ with their three older brothers. Weirdly enough, both girls are the youngest of four in their families! “I’m from Port Augusta which is a four hour drive from Adelaide. At home we take care of wildlife like kangaroos and possums that have been injured or have lost their mothers,” says Kiarra. “There’s not much shopping or anything fashion related … so I never really knew much about the modelling industry beforehand”. Both girls were discovered by AZALEA Models’ cofounder Stacey Hendrickson over Instagram earlier this year. Stunned by their unique features and out of this world beauty, Hendrickson invited each to an intensive modelling workshop and test shoot, and of course Kiarra and Angel were signed immediately with the agency. “The modelling industry was very alien to me… when I first started I was not familiar with the environment and dreaded being in photos,” says Angel. “I found it challenging to always be confident and happy with how I was performing”. Kiarra adds that the concept of modelling was also very foreign and isn’t anything like what she had expected. “You have to portray so many different moods and expressions… you’re an actor in a way,” says Kiarra. Reminiscing on their first modelling jobs with AZALEA Models, both girls remember how nervous they were, stepping in front of the camera and thinking that you had to be booming with confidence to be a successful model. “I have realised that you don’t have to change yourself and you don’t have to already have lots of confidence, as modelling is a journey that helps you gain it! No matter what you do there will always be 148
the need for effort and hard work,” says Angel, who also admits she “definitely underestimated how much work goes into each shoot by everyone involved”. But after having worked with numerous photographers and creative teams, building up an enviable model portfolio, Kiarra and Angel have taken to the industry like fish to water. “After the first two times going to Adelaide to model I didn’t find it to be that foreign anymore,” says Kiarra, but adds that she still pinches herself when new exciting opportunities arise. “Travelling to Sydney recently to meet with IMG Models was something so surreal. I had never even been on a plane before”. A tireless and often dreaded journey to Adelaide has now become a highlight for the girls, as each trip brings new opportunities and memorable experiences. “I am always very excited when I get the opportunity to go to Adelaide for work, and the trip that I used to dread, I now hope could only happen more often,” says Angel. “My favourite things about modelling are the opportunities I have to meet new people, go to new places and make new friends. I love the fact that I am able to gain confidence, and feel comfortable not only in myself but also around other people.” And when asked about their ambitions and goals for their modelling futures, both girls proved they have their feet firmly planted on the earth’s surface. “I have no expectations for modelling, I am just very grateful for what I have been given, and excited to see where it may take me… knowing that through hard work I have the opportunity to do something I truly love, and be part of something amazing,” says Angel; but of course it’s only natural for the girls to also shoot for the stars and work tirelessly for their dreams. “I’d like it to take me as far as it possibly can; walking for Victoria Secret would be my ultimate dream,” says Kiarra. “Looking at how some models go from living an ordinary life to being a successful model is what inspires me the most; knowing that someday that could be me”. Crystal Dench, the stylish young lady behind popular style blog Denchibitionist, is so much more than just a blogger. From interning at national fashion magazines and marketing firms to contributing to multiple online blogs and magazines, Crystal is fluent in many areas of the marketing and communications workforce. Being super stylish also landed Crystal a job as the Fashion Coordinator for one of Adelaide’s prestigious fashion events late last year, and anyone who attended the event would agree she did an amazing job. Mixing high street brands flawlessly with op shop treasures and local labels is a talent of Crystal’s, making her blog an instant go-to for any girl in need of inspiration. Her photos are an interesting mix of colour and sophistication, always utilising an interesting backdrop to add another dimension to her blog. Crystal also uses quirky little GIFs made during her photo shoots – moving pictures that show her flicking a skirt, or her short black hair blowing in the wind, which liven up posts and add a bit of personality to the page. Her signature sharp black bob and complementing lipstick are the final touches to every post, and tie her outfits together in a sleek manner. With a love of loose-fitting clothes and enviable shoes, Crystal seems to have the latest trends down pat while making them look effortless. To get a look into the busy life of Denchibitionist, TEO caught up with Crystal to pick her brain on style tips, the latest trends and what inspires her.
TEO: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BLOG AND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? CRYSTAL: My blog is a visual diary in which I share my musings. I have a relaxed yet tailored aesthetic. I would describe my personal style as a combination of feminine and structured pieces.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOTIVATION TO ENTER THE BLOGGING WORLD? Art was my favourite subject at school and I wanted to have a creative outlet. I started blogging a couple of years ago and it proved to be extremely cathartic and rewarding.
AS A STYLIST, WHERE DO YOU LEARN ALTERATION TIPS LIKE TYING GARMENTS CERTAIN WAYS AND CUFFING SLEEVES? I spent a week at Cosmopolitan Magazine under the guidance of their fashion editors and learned the fundamental role involved for editorial styling. This gave me an immense insight into the likes of pinning, tucking and clipping. I also grew up in London and spent a lot of time at the Victoria and Albert museum, observing and then imitating the pleats and folds I saw before me at fashion and textile exhibitions. I enjoy viewing the fashion collections at The National Gallery of

Victoria whenever I’m in Melbourne and enjoyed the ‘Fashion Icons’ exhibition at The Art gallery of South Australia.
WHEN YOU’RE HAVING A FASHION BLOCK DAY, WHERE DO YOU GO FOR STYLE INSPIRATION? I think people-watching inspires me more than anything. Understanding moods, colours and shapes comes from lots of casual observation. Also, a good movie helps me build ideas for looks and themes.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE ON SAVING FOR A LUXURY FASHION ITEM? Luxury items tend to fall under one of two categories; classics and dream purchases. I try to research what I want, where it can be found, if it’s likely to go on sale and how much wear I’d be getting out of the item. I then put aside money each fortnight to go towards it.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SMALLBUSINESS BOUTIQUE AND WHAT DRAWS YOU TO IT? I’m a huge advocate of all things vintage. I love Hype & Seek in Adelaide for one of a kind homewares and accessories. The people at the store are not only passionate about what they sell but knowledgeable on items too. They’ll chat with you about designers, eras and rarities.
WHAT WILL BE YOUR STAPLE ITEMS OF CLOTHING FOR NEXT SEASON? Living in Australia, I think we’re very fortunate to be able to preview what will be in store for us in the coming collections by way of observing Northern Hemisphere fashion. However, my fail-safes are metallic thread jumpers, vintage leather skirts and cable knit tights.
ARE THERE ANY TRENDS YOU’D NEVER TRY?
WHERE DO YOU HOPE YOUR BLOG AND POSITION IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY WILL TAKE YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I like to never say never when it comes to fashion. Everything goes full circle, so the obscure item sitting at the back of your wardrobe for years might just be the piece that completes your next look. It’s always fun to take a new spin on an old favourite.
I still hope to be sharing my concepts to an audience. I enjoy writing, styling and collaborating with creative and inspired people. Blogging and social media are platforms that provide these opportunities.

A DAY AT DISNEYLAND PARIS WORDS: MADELEINE GILL PHOTOGRAPHY: MADELEINE GILL

T E O M A G
My day began in the heart of Paris where I hopped on the train to the city of Lyon. It was a cold, overcast Monday – perfect for walking and exploring around Europe’s most magical theme park. The train ride seemed to take ages as I anticipated the enchanting sights, smells and flavours with the same eagerness I had as a child waiting for my Disney video to begin. Recalling the Disney princesses with my mother sped up the ride, and had me smiling all over again. We arrived at Disneyland’s gates right at the opening time and shuffled in amongst the masses; including dads with children on their shoulders, mothers with backpacks filled with packed lunches, grandparents enthusiastically holding the hands of overexcited children and couples curious to see what all the fuss was about. The first thing I saw upon entering was a huge bunch of Mickey Mouse head balloons. This was the moment when it really hit that I was in Disneyland. We passed under the Disney Hotel building and arrived on the ‘Main Street’ which was full of shops and restaurants, all bursting with bright colours. Christmas music streamed from above but amazingly, not a single sound system or speaker was in sight. The iconic Disney Castle was a beautiful pale pink with lovely blue tiled roofs on each turret. When venturing up the stairs of the castle you could find a selection of large stain glassed windows that visually told the story of Sleeping Beauty. ‘Alice’s Curious Labyrinth’ was a perfectly established maze that you could easily get lost in, which made it all the more fun. The maze wound around passing lots of colourful cartoon characters that all children, and some adults could recognise. At the end of the maze was a small castle (the ‘Red Queen’s Castle’). You could climb up to the top and admire the most exquisite view of the park and all its wonders. We spent most of the day wandering, in complete awe of how one place could completely immerse you in each of the stories created by Disney. In the afternoon we stood on the edge of the path along the town street and watched beautifully decorated Christmas floats with famous characters travel past all the excited spectators, waving to each of them and dancing along to the Christmas music. Each character did their best to fulfil Disney’s claim; that this was the ‘Happiest Place on Earth’. One of the most magical moments of being at Disneyland near Christmas, was standing in the middle of the ‘Town Street’ and all of a sudden, looking up and realising that there were white foam flakes of ‘snow’ falling all around us and into our hair! We left Disneyland at dusk and to our amazement, when looking back, the famous pink Disney castle had changed to a beautiful shade of blue and the roofs on the turrets were sparkling like glitter. This effect made anyone familiar with Sleeping Beauty squeal in delight, as the changing of colours from pink to blue on Princess Aurora’s bewitched dress was being recreated on the huge, spectacular castle. It was these simple details that really brought the world of Disney to life, creating real, long lasting magic.
