Editor’s Note As parents, it seems that time literally does fly by. I cannot believe my “babies” are now middle schoolers and a 4th grader, as they were just born! Instead of focusing my efforts on the new year, I am taking time to reflect on the year left behind; the memories made, the lessons learned and the things in which I could have done differently, all with the intention of carrying that knowledge into the year ahead. Time is a very precious gift and as it continues to move quickly, I am aware of how little time I have left with my children at home. In all of the lessons I have learned as a parent, taking the time to appreciate each and every age, every milestone, every moment is the absolute most important lesson of them all. Enjoy every moment with your family this year and make it the best New Year yet! Tracie Brown Vollgraf Editor info@activefamilymag.com

Know Your Tendencies and Try Something New – Family by Carrie Contey, Ph.D. I’ve worked with thousands of families, researched development for years, and believe me – there’s no one right way to do healthy humanhood. This is why experimenting in family life is crucial. You are evolving, they are evolving. Choose to EXPERIMENT! Be curious about what works for you and your family. One way to start identifying opportunities for experiments, as in, “Let’s try something new…!” Is to know your tendency and try the opposite. Below I listed four possible scenarios that families grapple with all the time. Use these examples to get your wheels turning around your tendencies, and how you can experiment. When the situation arises: You feel rushed to get out the door in morning… And your tendency is to: Speed up, get annoyed and bark orders… Experiment with this: Slow down. Take a few breaths. Observe before making your request. Notice what your people are doing. Connect with them in their world before you say

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, Something for Everyone by Elizabeth Kang If ever there was a perfect vacation destination for both adults and kids, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is it. With lush, tropical gardens, an exceptionally luxurious spa, and fun-filled children’s day camp, Hyatt Regency Maui is a family friendly resort that every member will be thrilled with. Hyatt Regency is located on the gorgeous Ka’anapali Beach, Maui, surrounded by 40 oceanfront acres of pristinely landscaped gardens, lush green lawns, and colorful tropical forests. The beach is clean, fine sand and crystal blue water — the exact thing you picture when you imagine a tropical getaway with the family. The resort offers so much for everyone. Read below for highlights of what makes Hyatt Regency Maui one of the most family friendly vacation destinations in Hawaii. Children Delights: Camp Hyatt engages children ages 5 to 12 in a variety of hands-on activities, games and learning experiences. 10 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JANUARY 2018

The daily camp is divided into two sessions, (9 am to 3 pm, and 5 pm to 9 pm) which is perfect for parents who can choose to have a spa day to themselves or romantic adult-only dinner. Activities include traditional lei making, building sandcastles, fishing, hula lessons, swimming, and much more. Reservations are required and prices start at $55 for a half day (includes lunch.) Turtle Talk is a fun complimentary educational experience your little “kieki” won’t want to miss. A marine expert leads an engaging discussion on the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, and provides interesting facts such as how long the turtle lives, and how long it can hold its breath. Penguin Feedings is another “can’t miss” event at the Hyatt Regency, taking place daily at 9:30 a.m. on the property’s Penguin Habitat, which houses the endangered African Black-Footed Penguin. Children will love learning all about the species from the Hyatt’s wildlife team, while watching the penguins energetically gobble up their morning breakfast.

[ TRAVEL ] Napili Pool is where kids and teens are likely to want to hang out all day. Older kids will love 150-foot enclosed lava tube water slide and swinging rope bridge. And everyone will enjoy hangin’ in the whirlpool hot tub. Kieki Lagoon is the place to be for toddlers or younger children, who will be thrilled with the sandy beach play area, pint-sized jumping water fountains and smaller, 25foot water slide. The lagoon also features playful dolphin and turtle figures to climb on. Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice will be everyone’s favorite pit stop, offering traditional Hawaiian shave ice made with natural, homemade syrups from 100% cane sugar (no corn syrup) and fresh fruit purees and concentrates in traditional and local flavors such as guava and passion fruit.

flowers and plants, right on the water. The spa offers indulgent massages, facials and body treatments, as well as other pampering services. The spa includes a “Glamour Room,” where guests can opt to get their makeup, hair and nails done for a special occasion or a quick blow out and style for a romantic dinner. Cabanas are offered oceanfront or poolside, and are just the thing for a shaded, relaxing day. Refreshing ice water and fresh fruit is included in your cabana, whether you choose a two-person, private cabana or family tent (up to seven people.) Moana Athletic Club is open 24-hours, so adults can stay fit whenever they choose in a high-tech, fully equipped complimentary fitness center. Take advantage of the numerous daily fitness classes offered on property as well, including Barre, Yoga, Aqua Fit, and Pilates.

Drums of the Pacific Lu’au, voted best Luau in Maui, is a fun-filled evening the whole family will remember. No Hawaiian vacation is complete without attending a traditional luau, and Drums of the Pacific is exemplary, featuring a lavash buffet with traditional and contemporary Hawaiian delicacies, eye-catching entertainment with drums, fire and dancing, and traditional Hawaiian costumes. *Another wonderful aspect of this property is that it’s petfriendly, allowing dogs under 50 pounds to stay in room, so children can bring their best friend on vacation, too! Adult Fun Kamaha`o Spa is a standout among resort spas in the area. It’s location can’t be topped, surrounded by lush

Romance Tour of the Stars ($40) is a unique experience offered at the hotel, where couples spend a romantic evening sharing champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries while stargazing, using a 14-inch high-power reflector telescope. The resort’s Director of Astronomy will teach couples interesting facts about the stars, and about how ancient Polynesians used the stars to navigate during sea voyages. (Family sessions are also available for $15 per child and $20 per adult.) Shopping is plentiful near the resort, with three main shopping hubs to choose from nearby. Whalers Village is a half mile from the Hyatt, which you can walk to, take the hotel trolley to or drive to, and discover designer boutiques, souvenir shops, art galleries and restaurants. Be sure to visit the nearby historic town of Lahaina, where you can easily spend half a day discovering quaint retail shops and savoring local food. Another retail therapy delight is the Outlets of Maui, which is a quick 5-minute 12 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JANUARY 2018

taxi ride from the Hyatt. You’ll find deep discounts on designer, brand-name goods at the outlets. Dining on property is diverse and plentiful, with ten different options available, from casual swim-up bars to fine-dining accommodations. For truly indulgent date night or adults-night-out, make reservations at Son’z Steakhouse for succulent, juicy prime steaks, fresh seafood and an extensive selection of wines. Or take it up a notch further and arrange an oceanside dinner for two, where award-winning chefs prepare a delicious multi-course dinner that you can enjoy privately by candlelight, under the stars. The Hyatt Regency Maui is truly a one-stop vacation destination designed with every age in mind. It’s an immensely enjoyable experience every member of the family will remember and want to return to, year after year.

How to Know Your Child is Ready for Preschool by Stratford School Have you been thinking of transitioning your toddler to preschool but aren’t sure if your child is ready? Even though you are your toddler’s first and most important teacher, it may be time for your little learner to explore the world, meet new friends, and gain knowledge that will be with your child forever. Why is Preschool Important? “Children who attend high-quality preschool enter kindergarten with better pre-reading skills, richer vocabularies, and stronger basic math skills than those who do not,” says NIEER (National Institute for Early Education Research) Director Steven Barnett, PhD. In addition to these early learning skills, preschoolers learn how to socialize with their peers, share, and contribute to a group for the first time.

the many years of learning to come. Here is a checklist to see if your little one meets the criteria for starting preschool. Is Your Child Potty Trained? Your child can attend most preschools sometime after their second birthday. Potty training is an important step toward being preschool-ready. Check with the director at school for guidelines and tips on toilet training readiness or plan to attend a local potty training workshop.

Is Your Child Ready for Exploration and Discovery? Preschool is an amazing time for a young child, full of rich learning experiences, meeting new friends and socialization. All children are eager to learn at this young age. An ideal preschool will provide your child with a world of new learning opportunities intended to connect them to their unique interests and abilities. If you have answered yes to most of the questions above, then your youngster is most likely ready to take on preschool.

from you? It’s natural for a preschooler to initially cling

to parents in a new setting, but most learn to quickly let go and enjoy joining the group. When choosing a new preschool, consider taking a tour of the facility with your child. This will help to introduce them to the new faces and surroundings they’ll be experiencing on a daily basis and help you look for signs that the preschool is a good fit. Helping Kids Be Goal-Setters by Dr. Michele Borba Parenting tips that teach kids to set resolutions and make them stick so they succeed! Do you know that goal-setting is one of the most highly correlated traits of peak performers and successful individuals? But goal-setting isn’t just for grown-ups. Studies show that goal-setting can help kids gain the sense of discipline and that internal drive it takes to stay motivated to complete the tasks they’ve set for themselves. And once they’ve learned how to set their own goal it shows in their performance as well as in their self-esteem! But there are other benefits for teaching goal-setting as well. Benefits of Goal-Setting for Kids ~ You’ll see your child start a school project–without waiting until the last minute–and finish it. ~ You’ll find your child doing his chores–without your nagging–because he knows he has to do them in order to start on his homework. ~ You’ll discover your child thinking through the jobs he needs to do for the

3 Resolutions to Make You Happier by Dr. Christine Carter I do understand why people don’t like New Year’s resolutions: they can be a source of failure, year after year. Folks often pick resolutions that are inherently unrewarding, that necessitate relentless hard work, or that remind them of their mortality in a way that makes them feel small instead of grateful.

This year, make the right resolution. Make the wrong one and you won’t keep it; you’ll just add another habit to the “fail” list. This year, pick just one resolution that research shows will make you happier. Here are are three of my favorites:

1. Spend more time with friends. Study after study shows that we tend to be happier when we feel connected to our nearest and dearest, when we feel like we are a part of a group or a clan. Even introverts don’t like to feel lonely; this may seem like the science of the blazingly obvious, but it bears repeating. Do you frequently feel isolated or lonely? Make a resolution to routinely reach Christine Carter, Ph.D.*, is a sociologist and happiness expert at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. She is the author of “RAISING HAPPINESS: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents.” She teaches online happiness classes that help parents bring more joy into their own lives and the lives of their children, and she writes an award-winning blog for *Greater Good* (www.greatergoodparents.org).

out to others.

2. Every day, find a way to give something to somebody. My favorite happiness booster is to give thanks: to a higher power for the abundance that surrounds me; to my dad for taking my kids to ice cream; to my husband for all the ways he makes me giggle. Equally good is to give something else—a helping hand, a compliment, a much needed $5 bill—even if it is just a tiny act of kindness. In a world that is more focused on getting than giving, a New Year’s resolution to do one kind thing each day is a pretty radical act. When we make giving a habit, we make gratitude and kindness central themes in our lives. In so doing, we transform our lives with joy.

3. Get more sleep. The science around this is clear: You’ll be less stressed, less sick, and less grouchy in the New Year if you get more shut-eye. Try increasing your sleep 10 minutes a night for a week, and then another 10 the next week, and so on until you are regularly getting your eight hours.

It is miraculous to me that people can change themselves simply because they want to. New Year’s resolutions are an amazing act of creation, an art form JANUARY 2018 | ACTIVE FAMIL Y 25

Wintertime at Disneyland –An unexpectedly Festive and Frosty Delight

by Elizabeth Kang Disneyland parks need no introduction. Most families I know take at least one Disney Vacation every few years, if not annually. Those happy family mouse-ear pics in front Cinderella’s castle invariably start popping up on my Instagram feed during Spring Break and continue all throughout Summer Break. The handful of times my family has gone has always been during Summer, as well. I mean, the kids are out of school and taking paid time off is pretty much expected at work, so why not go then? This year however, my family got the opportunity to visit the parks in the Winter, during Disney California Adventure’s “Festival of Holidays” event, which runs November 10th through January 7th. We were blown away, entirely delighted, and thrilled to discover a new 26 ACTIVE FAMIL Y | JANUARY 2018

favorite season for a Disneyland Parks vacation. If you are the type of family who only go to a Disneyland Park once in a blue moon, or have never visited at all, I highly suggest planning a trip during the Wintertime Season. There is so much to see and do at Disneyland and California Adventure in the “cold months.” (Winter in Anaheim rarely gets below 48 degrees, so temperature is rarely an issue during this time, although rain is more common, of course.) In fact, spending an entire Southern California day outside is entirely more pleasant in Winter than in the fierce Summer sun. What better way to shake off the Wintertime Blues than a visit to “The Happiest Place on Earth?” There are so many great reasons to visit during Winter, from festive holiday decor, seasonal food, and

[ TRAVEL ] entertainment, to awesome promotional deals: Fewer Crowds: After the holidays, Disneyland and California Adventure quiet down and crowds lessen considerably. For those who want to avoid the usual long lines and hustle & bustle, January and February are fantastic months to visit, especially during the period after Winter Break ends and before Spring Break begins. Promotions: Those looking for a deal should look in January and February, when promotional deals are most likely to pop up. Examples include adult tickets for the cost of a kids’ ticket, or Park Hopper tickets for the cost of a one-park ticket. Holiday Themed Rides: A few of the rides get really festive during Festival of Holidays, and are a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. Mater’s Jingle Jamboree — (Found in Cars Land at California Adventure,) is a spinning car ride that takes you through Mater’s decked-out holiday junkyard. Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl — (Also found in Cars Land) is an all ages ride where spinning cars “dance” to festive holiday music. While you’re in Cars Land, don’t miss what turned out to be my family’s favorite ride, Radiator Springs Racers — an extremely fun racing car ride that features some festive Christmas decorations during the season. It’s a Small World, Holiday — This endearing Disneyland classic ride gets a charming holiday twist with Christmas music and plenty holiday magic featuring seasonal scenes from around the world. Perfect for kids of all ages (we took our baby on this ride.) Tip: For extra holiday magic, experience this ride at nighttime when it’s all lit up with thousands of sparkling holiday lights. Haunted Mansion Holiday — During Christmastime, this spooky Disneyland ride gets a holiday overhaul inspired by Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” This ride offers so much to see and take in, and my daughter delighted in seeing characters from the movie, such as “Jack” and his ghost dog. Tip: Although this ride allows “all ages,” it may be too spooky for toddlers and preschoolers. Delicious Seasonal Food: Disneyland’s famous Frozen Dole Whip and roasted turkey leg are both well known and loved, but for some outside-the-box and truly elevated theme park food, you’ve got to check out the Festive Foods Marketplace at California Adventure Park during Festival of Holidays.

Braised Lamb Cheeks with Mediterranean Cauliflower, Warm Polenta with Chilled Crab Salad, and Sticky Toffee Pudding with Brandied Vanilla Sauce are just a few of the numerous seasonal menu items found at the holiday themed food kiosks in California Adventure. The plates are smaller and cheaper than your average plate at the park, so you can try more (and you’ll definitely be tempted to do just that.) I was extremely impressed by both the quality and number of options from the holiday food kiosks. My husband loved the tender and flavorful Braised Pork Belly Adobo with Garlic Fried Rice, which tasted like something you would get from an upscale restaurant. I was smitten with my Holiday Eggnog Cocktail with Whipped Cream & Nutmeg. My little one loved her Holiday Ham Slider with Pineapple Relish. Each Kiosk has a different, fun holiday theme with three or four food choices, as well as a few dessert and beverage offerings. At the “Grandma’s Recipes” kiosk, patrons can choose from Beef Brisket with Brown Sugar Carrots or Sweet Potato Pie, among others, and wash it down with a Warm Bourbon Cider or non-alcoholic Merry Cherry Pineapple Punch. There are plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free choices, as well as many kidfriendly options. Entertainment: In addition to the usual spectacular shows and events the parks put on, (Fantasmic! Fireworks! Parades!) there are a number of not-to-be-missed seasonal shows during the holiday season. World of Color — Season of Light Show. This was my family’s favorite show. It was just spectacular. Be sure to get a good spot before the show starts in front of the water at Paradise Pier. The 23-minute show sets dancing, colored water to holiday music and various Disney themes. It’s beautifully done, and my four-year-old danced the whole time. Tip- You can use the Fast Pass service to reserve a preferred viewing spot for this show. A Christmas Fantasy Parade — Everything you’d expect from a holiday-themed parade, complete with Santa on his sleigh. With two-showings a day, this parade is a fun way to rest your feet and enjoy a snack while taking in all the holiday joy. Festival of Holidays Entertainment — Numerous shows are scheduled at Paradise Pier celebrating various cultures and traditions such as Kwanza, Hanukkah, and Christmas. These shorter, less formal shows are a fun and diverse way to experience the season. JANUARY 2018 | ACTIVE FAMIL Y 27
