TBA

Simplifying your operations by setting industry benchmarks in consultancy services and advanced software applications

Vision and mission It is TBA’s vision to improve the cost efficiency and productivity of container and bulk terminals world-wide through consultancy and software. We distinguish ourselves by state-of-theart tools that facilitate decision-making such as simulation and emulation. Our clients include all major container terminal operators worldwide and many local port operators. TBA is headquartered in Delft (The Netherlands), has offices in Düsseldorf (Germany) and Satu Mare (Romania), and is locally represented in South America, Australia and Oceania. SIMULATION TBA has worked on over 800 projects,

including the design and improvement of over 200 terminals in over 75 countries spanning six continents, with capacities ranging from 50,000 TEU to 10 million TEU in annual throughput. Our studies cover all handling systems, including various state-of-the-art automation solutions. Project experience includes key port development projects in Europe (Antwerp, London and Rotterdam), the Middle East (Jebel Ali terminals and Khalifa terminal), North America (innovative developments in the ports of Los Angeles / Long Beach, New York / New Jersey and Virginia) and port development in Oceania (Auckland, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne). Also in Asia, we have been involved in the latest developments of automated terminals (Qingdao, Shanghai, Pusan). TBA has been involved in the majority of the most innovative terminal design projects globally over the last 10 years.

Aside from working on terminal-specific projects, we are the go-to expert for the evaluation of innovative new handling concepts for a number of major operators as well as equipment manufacturers. TBA’s simulations have proven to be accurate within a bandwidth of +/- 5%, compared to real operations. Especially in comparison to spreadsheet calculations, we distinguish ourselves as being more accurate, and therefore, leading to results that can be trusted.

EMULATION TESTING As the Terminal Operating System (TOS) is the heart of the terminal operation, and really drives the speed at which the operations run, it is crucial to have a new TOS fully prepared for this task. How to ensure that this is the case when the terminal is not yet open? With TBA’s emulation platform CONTROLS, you can realistically create stress situations and see how a new TOS performs before go-live: zz Does it run smoothly and is it stable? zz Does it support the performance targeted under design conditions? Or before peak-days and special circumstances: zz Is my TOS prepared for peak scenarios? zz How will my TOS perform if our volume grows or customer requirements change? TUNING A well-configured TOS is essential for high terminal performance, and therefore parameter fine-tuning is required. It is crucial to have it configured to support a high terminal performance at low cost. 12

How to evaluate a change in TOS parameter settings when the actual operations vary from day to day? zz Equipment scheduling parameters zz Container grounding parameters TOS tuning with CONTROLS has given terminals across the globe the competitive edge. TRAINING A key element in consistently achieving the terminal’s target productivities over various shifts and under varying conditions is a well-trained team of planners it all starts in the planning department. TBA’s Virtual Reality TOS Training aims to improve decisions made by, for example: zz Vessel planners zz Yard planners zz Equipment dispatchers We have trained over 250 planners world-wide, using game-based training SOFTWARE TEAMS TEAMS is the world’s first productized Equipment Control System for semi and fully automated container

terminals. It acts between the TOS and the automated equipment to ensure smooth, efficient and reliable operations. TEAMS has been implemented at CTA (Hamburg), Euromax (Rotterdam), Antwerp Gateway (Antwerp), APMT MV2 (Rotterdam), Rotterdam World gateway (Rotterdam), and soon at LBCT (Long Beach). TEAMS controls fleets of automated cranes and automated vehicles, and keeps TOS and process controller informed about the status of the automated equipment in real-time. TBA’s TEAMS real time control software plays a crucial role in meeting the promises of terminal automation, and guarantees that equipment is used to its full operational potential. TEAMS supports: zz Efficient execution of orders zz Fast, deadlock and colission-free routes zz Smooth equipment use, to ensure equipment longevity zz Minimization of down times due to breakdowns

“Camco Technologies was founded in April 1999 and since then the world has changed a lot. It was the era before Wi-Fi, USB and the Euro currency. photo cameras used Kodak and Agfa film rolls and CCTV cameras had CCD sensors with poor TV resolution. “In that setting, a new technology company was created: Camco. the name is a contraction of Camera Company. The goal was not to become just another camera supplier but a worldwide specialist supplying sophisticated visual-based process automation solutions. More than 15 years later, with a comprehensive suite of powerful and well-engineered systems and solutions, with a global presence on all continents, working with all major terminal operators, we can only confirm the name was an excellent choice.” Jan Bossen, Founder and CEO, Camco Technologies

SICK Solutions for the Port industry SICK provides numerous cutting-edge solutions for safety and efficiency in port applications, based on sensor technology. These applications include Container Stack profiling; Safe access guarding at lashing platforms; Gantry cranes (RMG/ ASC) collision prevention and distance measurement; Transfer area access guarding; Anti-truck lifting at gantry cranes; and Truck positioning systems. However, the Anti-Collision sensor technologies used for STS quay cranes and RTG cranes in container terminals are in particular focus within the ports industry. Indeed, according to insurance company TT Club, crane booms colliding with the structure or equipment of a ship is an all-too-common occurrence at almost every port around the world, causing serious injuries to workers and costly repairs and operational downtime. All quay cranes are at risk, including those involved in container, bulk and general cargo operations. Therefore, the Club continues to recommend strongly the installation of effective boom anti-collision systems to assist crane operators in avoiding these incidents. This is where SICK comes into the picture, with its unique ADVANCED OBJECT DETECTION SYSTEMS (AOS) tailored to provide effective solutions to help prevent such collisions. 36

The Offset frame is fully automatic and can be used with any kind of automatic spreader. The Offset frame is attached to the container spreader like a regular 20ft container in four top corner castings. There are no secondary fixings between the spreader and the offset frame, which means that the

Navis partners with its customers, helping them to accommodate increasing industry demands

L

For the first time, terminals have been faced with new operational challenges due to increased cargo volumes, rising customer expectations, demands for faster vessel turn-around times and thinner IT budgets. Existing terminal equipment, people and processes can only do so much to move the needle on operations. Instead, software and services designed to help terminals optimize operations, gain new efficiencies and improve customer service have become essential.

For more than 27 years, Navis has been partnering with its customers to develop the functionality of its terminal operating system into what is today called Navis N4. The flexibility of the Navis N4 platform enables terminals of all sizes to improve performance and efficiency, and grow into automated processes and systems when necessary. The most recent version of N4 3.1, was released in October 2015. N4 3.1 supports the industry move to automation while delivering enhanced capabilities for rail operations, system performance and key features to make it easier for legacy SPARCS/Express customers to move to N4. The N4 system is enhanced by the Navis Professional Services team whose systems implementation, integration, training, support and optimization expertise helps terminals realize the full value and potential from their technology investments, pre and post go-live.

Current Challenges of Terminal Operators Revealed As we are all aware, terminals today are faced with unprecedented challenges that impact terminal operations on a daily basis. Findings from a recent Navis customer survey* provides insight into the challenges and concerns of terminals worldwide. When asked about their biggest operational challenges, an overwhelming majority of customers–82 percent–revealed that optimizing operations to improve productivity is a chief concern. Behind that, more than half—66 percent—also noted the need to reduce operational costs as another top challenge. Other notable pain points include high trucker wait times at the gate (39 percent), training of personnel to use new technologies (37 percent), poor yard planning and a high number of rehandles (34 percent). * TechValidate survey of Navis N4 terminals conducted September 2015

arger ships are pushing supply chain boundaries and presenting new challenges for terminal operations. To maintain performance, terminals need to rethink how they build and operate their terminals. As a result, there is a growing trend for terminals to become more intelligent with automation technologies that holistically optimize operations with reliability and consistency.

59

theme to readying terminal operations for future success. The TOS has emerged as the technology backbone needed to support key automation-based initiatives—nearly 40 percent selected N4 to help prepare for or implement automated equipment and processes. Real-World Benefits Technology is only as good as the benefits it delivers to its users. According to Navis customers, N4 consistently provides value from initial go-live through to more mature uses of N4 five-to-seven years post implementation.

Why N4? Around the world, more than 190 terminals have made the decision to move to the N4 TOS for a variety of reasons. According to the same survey, 60 percent of current N4 customers chose N4 in order to update their TOS to a more modern platform. Based on industry challenges, not surprisingly 50 percent chose N4 to optimize operational processes while 33 percent noted selecting N4 to standardize operations across multiple sites.

Based on the survey findings, the need to improve productivity while reducing operational costs creates a perfect storm for terminal operators who must essentially do more with less. Thus, advanced technology solutions like N4 become increasingly important to drive necessary changes within the terminal, as well as fortify operations for long-term success. 60

Navis customers aren’t just concerned with improving their own operations—they also recognize how technologies like N4 can help them achieve new levels of efficiency that will elevate their positions in the broader regional and global trading markets. Nearly half (46 percent) of customers reported selecting Navis to improve their competitive advantage and keep up with industry demands. Lastly, terminals are increasingly focused on new ways they can achieve better outcomes. For many, process and equipment automation is a consistent

When asked in the survey to rate the degree of process improvements with N4, almost all (93 percent) noted improvements to operational visibility. Additionally, 83 percent identified improvements in gate/ rail and yard processes, respectively, while 77 percent experienced better vessel load and discharge productivity. Lastly, 75 percent reported improvements in IT staff productivity overall. Going a layer deeper, when asked to estimate how specific terminal processes have improved with the use of N4, respondents noted: zz Gate/rail processes: 75 percent saw up to a 25 percent improvement zz Yard productivity: 60 percent saw up to a 50 per cent improvement zz Vessel load and discharge: 56 per cent saw up to a 50 percent improvement zz IT staff efficiency: 73 percent saw up to a 25 percent improvement Terminals concerned with lowering operational costs are also seeing N4 deliver significant value in this regard. Seventy percent of those polled reported reduced costs in yard planning efficiency, 42 percent in improving customer

As more advanced technologies continue to infiltrate all areas of global container shipping, terminals that upgrade and enhance their technology infrastructures now will have both operational as well as competitive advantages against those who do not.

Innovation Continued innovation in technologies, systems and processes will be necessary to meet the industry’s ongoing challenges. Terminal facilities will need to continue to advance. More will be focused on sustainability and safety in their operations. And more than ever before, technology will continue to disrupt the status quo, transforming the way cargo is moved efficiently around the globe. Navis, LLC 55 Harrison Street, Suite 600, Oakland, CA 94607, USA www.navis.com

As terminals look to what’s next in the industry, Navis continues to move the needle for product and service delivery to support market needs. In late 2014, Navis announced the development of XVELA, a cloud-based

carrier-terminal collaboration platform designed to eliminate traditional communication barriers between carriers and container terminals, enhancing collaboration and vastly improving the planning and execution of critical vessel stowage operations. In addition, the Navis Business Intelligence Portal, launched earlier this year, is helping terminals to improve the reporting and analytics of their operations to make better, quicker decisions. And finally, Navis Optimization modules and services teams are helping more and more terminals to maximize the effectiveness of the technology investments. As more advanced technologies continue to infiltrate all areas of global container shipping, terminals that upgrade and enhance their technology infrastructures now will have both operational as well as competitive advantages against those who do not. Navis customers prove that operational improvements are possible in the face of industry challenges, today, tomorrow and well into the future.

satisfaction, 40 percent in more effective housekeeping and 39 percent in crane assignment processes. For those five-to-seven-years post N4 implementation, even greater savings were noted in these areas long-term.

Millimeter-wave (non-ionizing radiation) lie in the spectral region between radio waves and infrared, capable of passing transparently through lightweight materials such as clothing fabrics, to detect concealed objects. Gamma ray spectroscopy identifies radiological gamma sources, capturing gamma photons and converting them to measurable energy and forming a spectrum. Used to identify and to pin-point radiological gamma isotopes smuggled in containers. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) an analytical technique to identify unknown chemicals, measuring each chemical’s unique ‘molecular fingerprint’. Raman spectroscopy identifies unknown chemicals by recording how their uniquely vibrating molecular bonds scatter incident laser light into distinct frequencies. It complements FT-IR through its ability to penetrate containers holding potentially dangerous substances.

same time, we as humans have physical and mental needs that must be met by the lighting for us to work safely and live comfortably. Not all lights are created equal. The human perception is an advanced mechanism that involves so many factors that we must summarize it by saying that a light must ”feel” right to you. Prismalence takes that task seriously and embraces the challenge of remaining at the cutting edge of development. We are also a strong believer in that the best for us and the environment is to have long-lasting light fittings. Why Choose Prismalence? QUALITY LIGHT We work towards long-term satisfaction and we have fixtures that are adapted to work with the human perception and to function for a long time under all conditions. We have the least glare among all high-power LED fixtures with minimum performance loss through our patented lens system. Our LED light quality is superior with no flicker, good color rendering (esp. safety colors) and no 90

color shift when dimming. We have one of the longest reaches, furthest throw of light of any LED fixtures. We use a scientific approach to choosing the right spectral output for the job. ECO FRIENDLY Our in-house paint-shop does not only give us corrosion resistant paint, it is Northern Europe’s most Eco friendly with no chemicals released to the nature and the process heat is used to warm our workshop and warehouse. Our fittings are more than 90% recyclable, being made by mostly pure aluminium and glas. The electronics are easily field-stripped for replacement or recycling. We have won the European Green Light Award 2006 and 2008. SIMPLE Using our patented lens technology, installation is very easy with just one type of optics for all masts and fixed aiming degrees. ROI between 1-3 years. RELIABLE All our fittings use high grade materials in every detail with a very high focus on reliability under harsh conditions. We

use glass lenses that never will degrade due to UV. They are also specially hardened to be tough and vibration resistant. Our paint has been in marine use for more than 10 years with no blisters. Our patented optics works so that modular LED failures will only cause dimming, not loss of illuminated area, avoiding risks of blind spots in case of partially faulty LED. All fixtures are easily serviceable. Ballasts and LED light-sources can be replaced by end-user in case of failure. All our performance data is always Hot lumen System output. This means that we give the actual performance of the fitting when it is running in the field. We do not give irrelevant laboratory result. We have excellent thermal management. Our main fittings have been field tested in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for +50C performance and survival and for -30C in Sweden.

Trelleborg receives patent for “Slide in, Slide out” fender system Trelleborg’s marine operation recently received a patent for its innovative ‘slide in, slide out’ (SISO) marine fender system. The system, which has been designed to make fender maintenance more straightforward and less time consuming, utilizes removable sliding panels, significantly reducing the time taken to complete a fender wear pad change-out. In Trelleborg’s SISO system, ultra-highmolecular-weight polyethylene wear pads are bolted onto two stainless steel removable panels. The panels are then inserted into a guide rail on the front face of the fixed frontal frame.

Cavotec also supports its customers to reduce environmental impact. “The Airports and Ports & Maritime segments are both actively taking steps to become more eco-friendly. There are dual drivers here to progress: firstly the willingness to reduce environmental impact itself, and also the economic arguments associated with improving fuel economy and improving turnaround times. We are working closely with customers, understand the challenges that they face and are tailoring our offering accordingly for these segments,” he explains. The airports, ports and energy sectors have grown substantially in recent decades. In addition, the Middle East has not only invested heavily but has also experienced an upward trend as far as infrastructure development

Automated Horizontal Transportation 3.0

The pioneers (version 1.0) In the late eighties, ECT Delta terminal in Rotterdam took a decision to build a fully automated container terminal.

They automated Rail Mounted Gantry cranes (RMG) and used them as Automated Stacking Cranes (ASC). They combined these ASC with a number of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). The way ECT solved this first version of the automated horizontal transportation was considered as the industrial standard for at least 15 years and in some cases it still is. Today ECT Delta terminal is divided in three separated terminals and together these three terminals use approx. 300 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV). These vehicles are carrying the container directly on their back and are usually called “piggy back AGV”. Due to that they are not able to unload/load any containers by them self, they will need to wait until the Quay Cranes (QC) or ASC has done the job. During the last 10-15 years, at least three (3) additional terminals has been built using more or less the same concept and another two (2) are on their way to be commercialised (as per January 2015). The major difference between the ECT concept and the newer terminals is that the vehicles no longer operates in-gauge

Automated Horizontal Transport

N

o industry would today handle a large amount of unitised packages without automation. The car industry has used it for decades, so has the food and beverage industry. More and more logistic terminals use automation, as well as airports to handle the baggage. The port industry use automation for stacking, but why isn’t automation more frequently used for the transportation between the quay and the stack, also called the “Horizontal Transportation”? Even though the question is rather simple, the answer is not as easy. There are several factors that need to be considered, such as: zz CAPEX zz OPEX zz Productivity zz Implementation risks This article will compare existing AGV systems with new developments.

113

on how to handle the transport of containers. During these years over 50 000 trailers has been produced and delivered to customers all over the world. In 2006 the management took a decision to redesign the trailers. A complete new modular design was created and is today used through their complete portfolio of port products. In a later stage these trailers where designed with a driver’s cabin and exchangeable power-packs. This new vehicle, also called Automotive Terminal Trailer (ATT) was presented for DP-World for the first time already in 2009 and today approx. 100 vehicles are in operation all over the world.

(between the legs of the QC), instead the use the QC’s back-reach and an automated second trolley that is only loading/unloading AGVs. Decoupling (version 2.0) As mentioned above, the loading/unloading of containers on an AGV is always performed by a crane. However, in 2007 the first “decoupling” AGV was presented. With a number of fixed steel racks under the ASC and with a lifting table on top of the AGVs, the AGVs can now unload or load containers by themselves (version 2.0). The ASC places a container on one of these steel racks located at a Transfer Points (TP). The AGV would then enter under the container at the TP with a lifting table in its lowest position. By raising the lifting table, the containers would now rest on the vehicle’s lifting table, instead of the steel racks. The vehicle drives out of the steel racks, but before continuing to the holding lanes, it would need to lower the lifting table due to stability reasons. The decoupling is however only established under 114

the stacking cranes and as per today the only proven decoupling under the QC is done by straddle carriers. There has been an idea of using AGVs in combination with pallets. The concept has also been proven to be highly productive (by simulation), however never tested in reality. In 2012 two major terminal operators took the decision to build one terminal each in Rotterdam, based on this new AGV concept. Due to the fact that these new terminals haven’t started their operation yet, it’s difficult to see how the new concept performs. What is known however is that the number of vehicles needed to keep up the QC productivity is dramatically decreased, since the AGV’s waiting time at the ASC is more or less eliminated. The creative mind of French engineers In the small town of Héricourt, in the French country side outside Belfort, the engineers at Gaussin have designed vehicles and trailers for more than 135 years. As one of the first supplier to the container business, they have during these years an extensive knowledge

Too many people are getting injured in our line of business, which has been something that these French engineers have tried to reduce. The cabin of the ATT has been constructed to take a vertical load of 80t without getting crushed. If a container is dropped or misplaced, the cabin is been built to absorb the chock-load cabin without hurting the driver. It will just be moving vertically and since it’s placed in-front of the drive axle, there is enough space between the cabin and the ground to handle this movement. The power of your dreams The first delivered ATTs were built with hydraulic drives, using a diesel/hydraulic power pack. There are today 48 vehicles operating in the terminal of APMT in Tangier, with this configuration. The terminal operator has also purchased three extra power packs and by exchanging the power packs the preventive maintenance can be perform without having the vehicles been taken out of operation. The availability of these fleet of ATTs is close to 99%

vehicle height, while the Lift AGV uses a sax-lift on top of the vehicle, which makes increases the vehicle height. Due to this lifting mechanism as well as the delta shape frame construction, the total weight of an AIV Lift is considerably lower than for a Lift AGV and so is the steel weight of a docking station for a fleet of AIV Lifts. Another major difference is the manoeuvrability of these vehicles, since the AIV Lift rotates both the frontand rear axles ± 45°, while the Lift AGV turns its wheels similar to any ordinary truck.

Buffering (version 3.0) The result of removing the cabin from an ATT Lift, is what Gaussin call an Automated Intelligent Vehicle or what the market call an Lift “AGV”. Similar to the Lift AGV, the AIV Lift will be able to load and unload container by itself under the ASC by means of docking stations. The major difference between the docking stations that has been built for ver. 2.0 in Rotterdam is their height. Similar to the ATT Lift, the AIV Lift uses the suspension to adjust the

The Conclusion This article has clearly shown that there are new available technologies that are highly productive and to a much lower operating cost. The lower amount of vehicles needed to

Gaussin is aware of this and has therefore decided to invest in a demonstration site close to their headquarters in Héricourt, France. The size of this demonstration site will allow a number of Lift AIVs to be operating fully automated, transporting containers from a docking station under a RTG, to a second RTG crane acting as a QC. The fleet of AIV Lift will of course be controlled by Port Automation System’s FMS, which will receive orders from a TOS. The site will also have a number of Lift ATTs transporting containers between the same docking station under one of the RTGs to a single lane docking station that is considerably narrower, where a straddle carrier will be picking up the container and load a truck. The Demo site will be ready by the March 2015 and Gaussin intend to invite the press, customers, agent, dealers and investors for an open day in April. Don’t worry if you haven’t received an invitation, you will be able to see it all during the TOC Europe event June 9-11 in Rotterdam!

and thanks to the “stop and start” technology the fuel consumption is been reduced with approx. 40% compared to traditional prime movers. Last year, APMT Tangier was appointed as the “The terminal of the year” within APM Terminals.

Controlling the fleet An AGV system is never better than the Fleet Management System (FMS) controlling it. This is why Gaussin has created a Joint Venture with BA Systemes , located close to Rennes in heart of Brittany, France. BA Systemes has over 40 years of experience building complete AGV systems (i.e. both the vehicle and the control software) and with over 250 different applications worldwide, they are considered to be one of the most well established suppliers within their business field. The new JV will be called Port Automation Systems and will only be focusing on port automation by using the knowledge and know-how of BA-Systemes.

maintain a high productivity as well as a lower price on these vehicles, reduces the capital cost. Don’t forget the increased stacking area that will increase the terminals yearly turnover. Even if we can present some great advantages cost wise, there is always the difficulty for a newcomer to prove himself in a new market, especially the conservative business of handling containers.

“In the last years, environmental issues have been rising ever higher up the list of priorities for those who manage ports and container terminals. At the same time, new ports need to be equipped with the latest technologies and the highest level services to attract ship operator’s business. Combining both aspects, today, to be equipped to provide electricity to vessels at berth, a technology called shore connection or cold ironing, is a must in any new port terminal. Matthieu Nadaud, Business Development Director for Shore Connection Solutions, Schneider Electric

Emissions-free shore-to-ship connection system Ports are often perceived by the local community as a source of pollution and noise, and the issue is often linked to the emissions generated by ships at berth. Indeed, ships account for 6% of Sox, 15% of Nox and 2% of global CO2 emissions. They will have to meet new regulations outlined in Marpol 6, which was drawn up by the IMO and a number of pioneering countries. Ships and ports need to invest in new technology to

reduce pollution and to be compliant with these stricter regulations. A number of solutions are available but the shore connection technology is the only one that can cut all emissions from ships at berth. Our shore connection solution is: zz Safe and reliable: our solution is based on standard products, with proven performance, and working together in tested, validated and documented (TVD) architecture zz Modular and evolution solution: made of functional bricks, each one with a footprint equivalent to that of a standard container, they connect together to build a customised solution meeting your requirements for power, conversion and hardware configuration.
