The 1972 Bathurst 500 was the 13th running of the Bathurst 500 race and the last to be held over the original distance of 500 miles. After complaints from the dealers in 1972, John Barshaw Holden’s Director of Sales approached Peter Lewis-Williams now working for George Patterson’s advertising agency to go together with the new ad agency to create a distinctive colour scheme. Peter: “I remember we painted my car, dropped it down on the mag wheels, stood back and thought this is the best looking race car ever.” Harry made Peter come to the workshop every day. Weeks before Bathurst he sat in his car on the stands, no engine, no gearbox, focus on the job ahead. At the Sandown 500 most XU1’s retired with piston failure - faulty heat treating. With new pistons I rebuilt the engine. We had no dyno facilities, so Peter and I drove the cars to Bathurst to run them in. Peter: “I remember Ian and I drove the cars to Bathurst and in those days you had to prove you could drive safely in NSW. Near West Wylong we decided to open them up, I wanted to test some slip streaming, we lined them up, identical performances around Cowra but as night began to fall we went over road works. I was sitting behind Tatie and all of a sudden my lights disappeared and he thought Brockie’s playing funny buggers, he’s switched his lights off. I will fix him. So he gets stuck into it trying to lose me, I had no lights and a damaged windscreen.” Early next morning at Bathurst Motors before Harry arrived we fitted new headlights, parking lights & windscreen. Victory was Peter’s first of many. And an enormous thrill for GMH and our small underfunded race team. Peter: “For the first few laps I couldn’t see, I could only see his tail and stop lights when braking. I was following Moffatt and had to rely on his brake lights. I couldn’t have picked anyone better to follow, he’s dead safe to race against." Peter finished one lap in front of John French in his GTHO. “Torana when you’re hot, you’re hot” Ian Tate
