AUGUST CONTRIBUTORS ALAURA PITTMAN HEATHER CAMBELL

WELCOME Welcome to our wool and fiber arts festival

When I went to my first fiber festival years and years ago I was amazed at all the vibrant colors and textures that I experienced there. The vendors were amazing and I knew I had landed in a community where I could to just hang out and absorb all the knowledge that was floating around. This Wool and Fiber Arts Show Program was designed to recreate the feeling of being at an event in person. Due to Covid-19 our lives have changed dramatically and our festivals are being canceled left and right. Our monthly online fiber festival sales have been a blessing to many and a joy to see develop. The facebook group "WAFA" was started back in April by our beloved founder Ellen from Zephyr Creek Farms. It has blossomed into more than just a facebook group to visit. It is now a community that leans on each other and provides an outlet for our craft and to share the love of fiber and the process of transforming it. I hope you enjoy the virtual walk through of our wool and fiber arts festival and are able to join us on the last weeked of each month for our "Live" sales event. INTER VIEW

BY ALAURA PITTMAN

Monica Thoune What Inspires you? I find my inspiration from the colors I see abounding in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I like all four seasons and see things that make my brain click even in the dead of winter. I also draw from the gorgeous colors in my flower beds; the Great Lakes, and from the amazing hues I see in the rocks I collect. My colorways are my attempt at translating the beauty of nature into a skein of yarn that buyers will enjoy using in their creations.

What made you first decide to start dyeing your own yarn? I started dyeing yarn in September 2015. I was admiring the many fabulous indie-dyed yarns I saw online and thought, “I would like to try my hand at that.” That month I was on a road trip, marvelling at the stunning Autumn colors. When I got home I poked around the internet for yarn dyeing instructions, ordered some acid and natural dyes and my first colorway, Yooper Autumn, was created. To date, American Kestrel and Rustic Donegal Tweed have been my best sellers. I cannot even begin to pick my personal favorite yarn or colors. WOOL AND FIBER ARTS

AUGUST 2020

What’s your favorite colorway? Ah come on now - that’s like asking me which of my grandchildren is my favorite. They’re all my favorites!

How has your business been affected by Covid-19? My business exploded (in a good way) during the pandemic. I don’t know what to attribute the boom in sales to - maybe I was able to devote more time to marketing on social media, dyeing up new colorways, and collaborating with others. Regardless of the reason why, more knitters and crocheters are learning of my little business, I am so appreciative of each and every sale.

How did you learn to dye yarn; did you just start experimenting or did you watch videos or learn from a book? I started experimenting; however, I also picked up some excellent resources that were suggested to me by an art teacher friend who is also crazy about fiber. I spent a lot of time reading tutorials on Paula Burch’s site as well as Dharma Trading Company’s (DTC) website. Most indie dyers get dyeing supplies from DTC so their information is our go-to for accurate information.

Do you have a favorite base to dye (wool, alpaca, mohair, etc)? Right now, my absolute favorite yarn blend is a lovely 90/10 merino/linen fingering. The linen resists the dye, which gives the yarn wonderful tonal nuances. I want to make ALL the things with this base. About the Author: Alaura Pittman Alaura runs Ironhorse Homestead, a small fiber farm in Ohio. They raise alpacas, angora goats, and "soon" she says " (fingers crossed) sheep!" I invented My Two Ladies™ out of pure frustration. There had to be a better way to knit this big and bulky blanket. It was exhausting and very time consuming, with either straight or circular needles. While at the studio, an idea popped into my head.

Alexis Mantione

Creator/Owner

My Two Ladies™ It’s more than a knitting needle. It’s more than a name. It’s a tribute to knitting and the close knit fiber arts community. It's not just yarn and stitches, but so much more.

I grabbed some knitting tools and supplies, made some modifications, and started knitting quickly and effortlessly. "How is it no one ever thought of this?”. Well I thought of it, I patented it, I manufactured it ….. and almost a year later….. My Two Ladies™ Adjustable Straight Knitting Needle System became available for all to enjoy. They are beautiful, functional and a pleasure to work with. I hope My Two Ladies™ bring as much joy to you as it has to me.

Knitting gave me the opportunity to be part of an indescribable bond between creative fiber folks of varying age, ethnic and social backgrounds, whom would probably have never met otherwise. Our joy of creating, brings us together and creates a feeling of belonging. I wish everyone could be part of a community such as ours.

Happy knitting, Alexis

Fiber Seed Chronicles

a r o g n A bits Rab Photos submitted by Heather Cambell

Angora rabbits were developed during Roman times. The gene for long hair exists in many animals, and as it is recessive (in other words hidden in animals who are carriers), it can crop up unexpectedly in places. Once someone noticed that this coat type was valuable, it was a simple procedure to make more carriers, and a line of angoras were born.

Angoras first came to the United states around 1920, over the years, the American Rabbit Breeder Associated recognized, French Angoras (known for their commercial body type, and low matting coat), English Angoras (a much softer wool with beautiful ear and face furnishings), Giant Angoras (Developed by crossing Angoras with French Lops and Flemish giants).

While there are two distinct histories, I believe that the thought that most were in England (there was a decree stating that ‘English Silky Hares’ should not be allowed to leave the country) until smuggled out is the correct one.

In addition, German Angoras, a non molting (shedding) bunny was popular in handspinning and fiber farms, for their tremendous yield.

Whatever the case is, there seems to be no doubt Angoras ended up in France in the 1700s. The French quickly started breeding them for their wool and the modern day Angora rabbit was on its way.

But in the 1980s, a Satin rabbit breeder noticed a mutation in their rabbits: a bunny had longer than normal hair. Mrs L.P. Meyer, a longtime angora fancier, was intrigued and bred the little copper bunny to a French Angora. In 1987, the ARBA accepted the Satin Angora into the show world.

Cont... pg. Satin Angoras are still a breed that is considered a work in progress. They tend to produce less wool than their other Angora cousins, but part of that is simply because their wool is so much finer. The hair shaft is lighter and feels almost like silk in texture. It spins beautifully into an extremely strong yarn that glows with a light.

I have chosen to work with and promote Satin Angoras for several reasons.

Every color of Satin Angora shimmers in the sun. The wool accepts dye readily, and is 8 times warmer than sheep's wool, soft, and lofty.

They must be easy to handle. Satin Angoras are inquisitive, active and, like all Angoras, a bit clownish. It’s wonderful having bunnies who come up for petting and greet you at the cage door every morning, especially when petting them is like petting silk.

No bunnies have to be harmed to produce the fiber; instead they are groomed and their coats are either sheared or plucked (where the currently-shedding fiber is removed by hand), approximately 4 times a year.

First is their temperament. All Angoras tend to enjoy attention. They are clowns, and sweet. After all, unlike many bunnies bred strictly for meat purposes, Angoras have been bred to live a long productive life making wool.

The next is their fiber. All Angora is a luxury fiber, but Satin Angora is the epitome of the word. It’s silky, shiny, warm, extremely light weight, and spectacular. It is fiber fit for a king. I have been spinning fiber for almost 20 years, and I am addicted to spinning Satin Angora. It spins beautifully straight, but it can also be blended with wool, alpaca, or other fibers. The limit is your imagination! Finally, since Satin Angoras are a new breed, there is a lot of room for improvement. And nothing is more challenging than something that can be considered a work in progress toward perfection. You will find Purebred Satin Angora fiber in many forms from great small breeders all over the United States. It makes a beautiful unique yarn and lends itself to all types of products.

Photos submitted by Heather Cambell

About the author: Heather Campbell is the owner/founder of Purly Shell Fiber Arts LLC in Ilwaco, WA. She also has a small herd of angora rabbits, and is one of the top producers of Satin Angoras in the nation. While she now doesn’t show her bunnies, she still does education and assists in Angora Rabbit Rescue in the Northwest.
