Wool and Fiber arts Festival Show Program Team

Welcome to our Wool and Fiber Arts Festival

Kat Bierkens Editor-In-Chief, Graphics

Henri Pierre Editor, Graphics

September Contributors Letter from the editor Thank you for joining us for our 6th Wool and Fiber Arts LIVE Festival! I can't believe we have already spent half a year together. This past month has been a difficult one across the US with fires, floods and covid restrictions. I have seen many vendors and members personally affected by these events but have also seen amazing support and love flowing from this group. I know that this space that we have created has been a blessing to many and a safehaven from the chaos that is currently affecting us all.

Anne Bamert Liz Rachel

I want to express my gratitude for being allowed to create this publication. Every month it is a huge task and a labor of love as I explore and showcase the amazing talent of our vendors. What you may not know is that the WAFA vendors belong to a "wafa-behind-the-scenes" fb group. They support each other and lift each other up when needed. I can't begin to explain how incredible it has been to watch the growth of these small businesses and the impact it has had on their lives. So, my gratitude also extends to you, the WAFA member, you have encouraged us, told us what you needed, and shared your talents and passions. This has resulted in not just a facebook group but a community and it has been wonderful thing to see develop. Kat Bierkens Editor-in-Chief /Flocktender/Fiber Blessings and Hugs to Ewe, Farmer ^^Kat~ I hope you enjoy the virtual walk through of our wool and fiber arts festival and are able to join us on the last weeked of each month for our "Live" sales events. Meet one of our. WAFA Vendors

Roberta Bamert Fibers, fleeces, wool and everything in between

When it comes to Fiber Arts, her mantra is “explore possibilities, create something amazing and inspire others in finding their artistic passion”. Roberta Anne Bamert has always been fascinated by colors as early as age 6, growing up in the Philippines. She would watched her grandmother Ela (they called her Ina´) and her Aunt Babu´ dye palm leaves and wove these into "banig".

Philippine banig

A baníg is a handwoven mat used in East Asian countries for sleeping and sitting. The mat is made from palm leaves, pandan or sea grass leaf. Ina´ and Babu´ would dry the leaves, place them in a giant vat and dyed with brilliant colors of reds, blues, and yellows (the purples and greens were her favorite and Anne’s first adventure with secondary colors).

The leaves were cut into strips and woven into mats. The Philippine textile has a rich history of weaving, embroidery and beading tradition that dates back to centuries before the country was colonized by the Spaniards. Over the years, the textile industry has suffered major setbacks when their children’s children left to get higher education and never learned the crafts. However, the cultural history and practices were celebrated in schools and universities thru folk dances among other things. These folk dances features rich textiles and colorful adornments. Years later, Anne found herself exploring the wonderful world of wool fibers. Her recent trip to Scotland in 2018 included trips to sheep farms and wool mills which gave her a deeper insight on how these farmers work. Anne has tremendous respect for sheep farmers who raise amazing fleeces; the hard work, dedication and love they've put into raising their flock truly inspires her. She directly support domestic and international farmers so they can continue to raise and care for our fiber seeds. One of the sheep farmers that Anne saw physically do hard work around sheep is Natalie Redding of Namaste Farms in Temecula, California. She first met Natalie when she took her Redding Method classes. Natalie introduced her to long wools and different types of breeds other than fine wools. Anne is a life-long learner and has taken several dye classes most notably from Michael Rohde and Natalie Redding. She also have copies of Susan Rex’s books to add to her growing library list of Fiber Arts books. What made Redding Method different from other classes she took was it allowed her to think creatively and understand how acid dyes work on certain fibers, how to “read” your colors and develop problem-solving skills. “There are so many variables in protein dyeing that even a “no-fail” recipe won’t give you the exact same result” states Anne.

In addition to dyeing, Anne spins, knits and weaves when she’s not working her day job as a Healthcare professional. Being a small business owner in fiber arts is something new to her. Her ultimate goal is to offer customers the highest quality, most unique merchandise on the market while supporting sheep farmers. She creates in small batches to ensure she gives careful attention to details. She encourages fiber enthusiasts to explore her products, create something beautiful and hope you inspire others to find their artistic passion. Anne is on FB and Instagram as Fibers by Design.

I love dyeing longwools and spinning locks into novelty yarns. Coarse wool in their natural colors make beautiful rugs as well. Fine wools are my favorite to spin. ~Anne AkA "Roberta" Bamert

......Its been awhile, but i thought everyone would like an update on my experiment with this gorgeous falkland braid from Christin Santos Crafty Fellows: Desert Panda Fiber Arts. I was inspired by Alanna Rothschild Wilcox and her fabulous book 'A New Spin on Color', which everyone who spins should have. Seriously I can't stress enough what an amazing read it is! I split the braid into each of its individual colors before spinning them up and plying them with some off white silk thread. I ended up with a little over 300yds of sport weight yarn that'll soon be knit up into a cowl for a dear friend. The spindles I used were from Cynthia Wood Spinner and the niddy noddy was from Susan's Fiber Shop, both purchased through the wafa page. I love this group!

Storing Fiber Supplies and Tools in a Small HERE'S TO YOU Space

By Liz Mitchko Enjoy your day, birthday girl!

Are you realizing there is only so much room in your “she/he shed” or work space and it has gotten out of control? Have you gone “tiny”? As fiber artists, we all share something in common. We “collect” equipment, fleeces, roving, yarn and we all know it’s an addiction. C’mon, it is like potato chips or chocolate! When I’m asked do I “really” need it?...my reply is that hey, alpacas (sheep, goats, etc.) are a herd animal so I can’t just have one, or it’s a different size or color, etc. Right? Yup, I can feel the breeze from all the heads nodding in agreement. Now that we’ve admitted it, we do have to be realistic and get a bit organized and inventive on just how to store it all so that not only can you find everything, but become more efficient too. By being more efficient, especially if you are selling, you will have better production rates because you are not taking too much time looking for things, or constantly having to rearrange things to make room to do your fiber arts. ..............Cont...

,

I invented My Two Ladies™ out of pure frustration. There had to be a better way to knit this big and bulky blanket. It was exhausting and very time consuming, with either straight or circular needles. While at the studio, an idea popped into my head.

Alexis Mantione, Creator/Owner

Creator/OwnerMy Two Ladies™. It’s more than a knitting needle. It’s more than a name. It’s a tribute to knitting and the close knit fiber arts community. It's not just yarn and stitches, but so much more.

I grabbed some knitting tools and supplies, made some modifications, and started knitting quickly and effortlessly. "How is it no one ever thought of this?”.

Knitting gave me the opportunity to be part of an indescribable bond between a creative fiber folks of varying age, ethnic and social backgrounds, whom would probably have never met otherwise.

Well I thought of it, I patented it, I manufactured it ….. and almost a year later….. My Two Ladies™ Adjustable Straight Knitting Needle System became available for all to enjoy. They are beautiful, functional and a pleasure to work with. I hope My Two Ladies™ bring as much joy to you as it has to me.

Our joy of creating, brings us together and creates a feeling of belonging. I wish everyone be part of a community such as ours.

Happy knitting, Alexis

Storing Fiber and Supplies in a Small Space cont.....

A word of warning….it’s going to get messy before it gets better. Think about the space you want/need to use and measure it, not just horizontally, but vertically too. Also measure where any outlets, windows, doorways or walkways are located and put it on graph paper so it is to scale. You also want to indicate where any ceiling lights are. Make a budget for any shelving or hardware you might need. Now here is the hard part- YOU need to grab a notebook and think about your personal situation of your space. Is it just you using it or are their other family members or pets? What do you ultimately want to accomplish? Organizing as you have trouble finding things? Forgotten you bought that 3 years ago and just bought more? No space to use what you have? Or store it when company comes over? Take the time to write down all the materials you have that you need to organize (hint: us a separate page for equipment/tools, yarn, fleeces, etc.) Now measure any equipment you can’t fit into a shoebox (wheels, looms, wet felting forms, dyeing pots, etc.) Didn’t think you had that much did you? The struggle is real! ...cont pg 50

SEPTEMBER 2020

Once you are done making your lists, think about what you need the most often. Those are the things that need to be out front or easiest to access. Using your graph paper, and measurements, see what furniture or fixtures can fit where without physically moving them. The first thing we are going to talk about is raw fiber storage, as it tends to take up the most space. Where do you have yours? Is it on the floor, closet or tossed on a shelf? How often do you need to get into your fleeces? Do you have your own herd or flock? Or buy them raw and skirted? Or washed? How often do you shear? Do you need to wash them? Or ship them to a mill? All of these questions will help you with your organization and efficiency. Making space means you need to change your thinking from horizontal to vertical. Here is a picture of 12 bags of alpaca fiber totaling about 21 lbs covering a 6’ x 30” table and a couple of chairs. By taking a whole 5 minutes of squishing the excess air out of each bag, it was reduced to 2’ x 30”. By placing a tag of some kind on the inside of the bag with information on the fleece/fiber, you don’t need to open it until you are ready to use it. (Name/ID#, species, grade/micron, staple length, has it been skirted? Washed? To be processed? Weight? Color?). WOOL AND FIBER ARTS

SEPTEMBER 2020

This is ideal for fibers without lanolin, or washed wools. Unwashed wool should not be stored in closed bags. I found plastic shelves at a garage sale for $5 each, and they have worked well for me as it allowed me to use unused vertical space. These shelves are 4’ wide x 12” deep. Each has 5 shelves with 8-10 fleeces per shelf. These 170 fleeces were sorted by species, color then micron and by just removing the air, placing an info tag and sorting them onto a shelf, I save time when looking for a specific fleece. You can sort by ”to be” skirted, washed, carded, spun….whatever YOUR needs are and your space availability is. So those measurements you took of your space…use them to see what kind of storage can fit in your space. Look on line, at yard/garage sales, in your own home and re purpose other pieces of furniture like a bookcase with adjustable shelves. (Note, don’t store plastic bags too close to ceiling light fixtures or in direct sunlight.) Don’t hesitate to look in the kids department for smaller scaled furniture to fit small areas. Do you only have a few fleeces, but 2 spinning wheels? Take off the top shelf and put your wheels up higher, out of the way when not in use. That same shelf space can also be used to park your carder when not in use. Another wonderful multi-purpose storage/work space would be a portable kitchen island with locking wheels. Most have shelves or cabinet, and the wheels let you move them out of the way. For all those smalls (knitting needles, crochet hooks, felting WOOL AND FIBER ARTS

tools, shuttles, etc) the hanging shoe organizers that you see behind doors are fantastic for all your small tools. If you get a clear one you can easily find them. Plus, you can cut them in half vertically and hang them off the ends of the shelf units. Or, hang one or more for your yarn in front of the fleeces. Do you constantly make carded batts? Fill the pockets with different fibers, or bling like Angelina or Firestar or different colored locks - keeps the colors separate. When not in use, fold it in thirds and store it under a bed, on a shelf, etc. Want to keep the dust off of it? Cut a shower curtain liner to fit and secure closed with a few Velcro tabs. Storage tubs, if you have the space and budget, can be ideal for those projects you only get into a couple of times a year. Ideally, one type per tub, but if not, a sandwich bag taped to the outside with an index card of what is inside will keep you from opening every tub looking for something. If all the tubs are the same type, vertical stacking is easier. They will also nest together when empty. When you are ready, take everything out of the area you need to organize and as you are moving things out, begin sorting everything based on type of items, then frequency of use. This will make it easier to move them back in. Get a friend to help and keep you from getting sidetracked. Things you haven’t used for years- keep them out and put them up for sale on line! Is your yarn stash getting out of control or do you need to see it all for inspiration or color ideas? Try the plastic coated metal girds than can be assembled into 1’ cubes. Can’t find your heddles or shuttles, build your own storage box to hold them vertically. Some places to look for storage or organization ideas- auctions of closing retail businesses for adjustable shelving, fixtures and displays, stores like IKEA, The Container Store, garage sales, etc. Try and find things that have adjustable shelves. There are many internet sites about storage, and craft room ideas. Take back control of your creativity and get organized and efficient!

See you in October!!

Ewephoria Fiber Art by Alison Gartner I have always been drawn to colors and textures, and my one-ofa-kind accessories reflect my passion for transforming natural fibers into pieces of functional art.I began my creative journey as a knitter, and have transitioned to felting as my primary focus. Using various combinations of wool, silk and other fabric embellishments, I work to create a sumptuous and shimmering new textile that can be further transformed into wearables and other items.

Bags by K.C. Kostelaz Creations Can you ever have enough bags? Bags by KC is a small home-run business in the Pacific Northwest that grew from a desire for an attractive, quality bag that wouldn't "break the bank". Handcrafted bags are made with high quality fabrics and materials to contain all of your projects and fiber goodies! They are fully lined and have boxed corners for ease of use. When you shop with Bags by Kostelaz Creations you will find fabrics and patterns that run the gamut from whimsical animal prints to fantasy, garden and sea themes to designs that tickled my fancy and hopefully yours as well!
