Welcome to our wool and fiber arts festival
When I went to my first fiber festival years and years ago I was amazed at all the vibrant colors and textures that I experienced there. The vendors were amazing and I knew I had landed in a community where I could to just hang out and absorb all the knowledge that was floating around. This Wool and Fiber Arts Show Program was designed to recreate the feeling of being at an event in person. Due to Covid-19 our lives have changed dramatically and our festivals are being canceled left and right. Our monthly online fiber festival sales have been a blessing to many and a joy to see develop. The facebook group "WAFA" was started back in April by our beloved founder Ellen from Zepher Creek Fams. It has blossomed into more than just a facebook group to visit. It is now a community that leans on each other and provides an outlet for our craft and to share the love of fiber and the process of transforming it. I hope you enjoy the virtual walk through of our wool and fiber arts festival and are able to join us on the last weeked of each month for our "Live" sales event.

INTER VIEW
Reena Lee Harwood WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
BY ALAURA PITTMAN
There isn’t much that doesn’t inspire me, mostly creatures and nature. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? ARE THERE ANY CRAFTERS/ARTISTS/DESIGNERS THAT YOU PARTICULARLY LOOK UP TO?
I define my style as “Illusionary Realism” but I’m inspired by all genres, I especially love a good abstract piece as I simply can’t do it! There are so many artists I admire that I can’t list them. Sometimes I’m completely inspired by a beginner’s work. It’s not about looking up to someone it’s about empowering and inspiring each other.

JULY 2020
Hello fellow fiber addicts and craft enthusiasts, my name is Alaura Pittman. I love all types of fiber arts and artists, so I was very excited to be able to interview a fellow fiber artist and learn more about her work. I had the pleasure of chatting with Reena Lee Harwood, a very talented needlefelter who lives in Australia. I asked her a few questions about her work, and her answers were unique and very inspiring. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.
What was the first needle felted item you made? It was a little skunk curled up on a leaf. I still have it to this day and it’s very special.
What advice would you give someone who wanted to learn how to needlefelt? It’s not that difficult to stab a bit of fluff into a shape but the level of dedication is what determines your outcome. The wool goes in the direction you point the needle. Oh, and put the bandaids on first!
What types of wool are best for needlefelting projects. All types of fibre respond well to the needle in the correct application. However, the coarser breeds of wool with a short staple of 2-3 inches make the best core for big sculptures. Something like Black Faced Suffolk or even Romney of any length.
WOOL AND FIBER ARTS
- 12 -
Do you do any custom pieces? All of my sculptures are one-of-akind creations, even if I make two of something they are always different, like siblings. This makes them custom creations in their own right but if you mean do I take commissions the answer is no. I am more interested in teaching others how to do it for themselves rather than me making it for them. There is only one of me which is why I made my video course.
JULY 2020
When did you first start needlefelting? I first dabbled in 2011 but became a full-time addict to the needle in 2015. Do you have a certain type of item that you make more than others? I tend to create more Aussie creatures because I am an Aussie. I do have tendency to create the endangered creatures and I’m also a bit of an “Artivist”. Getting a deeper message across with my art is something I aspire to. How did you learn to needlefelt? I’d like to say I taught myself but really the fibre taught me, I still listen to the fibre.
During the WAFA LIVE events Reena will be promoting her online needle felting course on www.reenaleecreations.teachabl e.com Reena also sells some of her sculptures, kits and her unique Aussie Outback Core. All of this is available from her website: www.reenaleecreations.com.au As special treat for WAFA members, use the CODE: WAFA20 to get 20% off store wide.
What is the hardest part about needlefelting? Parting with your sculptures and explaining to admirers how long they took to create, one stab at a time.

KEEPING YOUR CARDER CLEAN AND IN GOOD WORKING ORDER by Mary Egbert
Fiber Processing Tips
There are a couple of reasons why one would keep their drum carder clean. One, so they don’t “contaminate” their next batt with fiber from the previous batt and second, so the gears don’t get clogged up with fiber. If the turning mechanisms are neglected and fill up with fiber, the carder may be harder to turn putting undue force through the machine which may in turn cause excessive wear.
The tools one might need to clean a drum carder are a: Doffer brush, porcupine quill, hairbrush cleaner, tweezers or even a vacuum cleaner. It is best to clean the licker in first as this fiber will deposit on the main drum as you turn the drum during cleaning. Next, clean the main drum with the doffer brush finishing the job with the hairbrush cleaner. Some drum carder users use a shop vac to vacuum off the drums. However, if the fine fibers are stuck deep in the drum the hairbrush cleaner does a better job. Now onto the base of the handle and where the drums are connected. Don’t forget the drive band too or the gears of the chain drive. This is where tweezers and the porcupine quill come in handy keeping your fingers clear of the sharp tips. Keeping your drum carder clean keeps it in tip top working order and will give you years of enjoyment. WOOL AND FIBER ARTS

A little Tuft of Guanaco Fiber
WOOL AND FIBER ARTS
- 15 -
peak
Photos submitted by Lisa Mitchell
I’m cleaning out our guanaco stud’s pen. It smells of ammonia and rich soil. It’s early morning and I do this as a meditation practice. It’s slow, repetitive, methodical. I listen to the birds gather in the morning moisture and Coacher hums a bit just outside of his pen. I check his water, I refill his hay. I sweep his poop pellets into the pan and dump them in a bucket. They sound like the chocolate covered almonds I love so much when they pour into a re-used plastic tub at the grocery store. I can do all of this mindlessly, but instead I pay attention. I’m at the beginning of things. I’m where the grass is still grass and not yet downy fiber. I’m where the nutrients have been processed and then spent, the remnants of the beginning of fiber production. I’m where the flies would like to feast. I’m where the chewing and the humming and the raw living happens. It’s not lost on me that a tuft of that lovely guanaco fluff has been pulled from Coacher’s chest by a splintered section of the wooden beamed pen. I pull it off of the board and stroke it. It’s the under fiber, the soft, white sponginess that grows close to a guanaco’s skin. It’s light as air but warms my fingers immediately. I’ve wanted to get my hands on his fiber for weeks now to see how long it is, how fine it is. His wildness makes this impossible without restraint, so I haven’t risked it. But now, in this birdsong morning, I am at the beginning again. Here in his pen where everything starts, with a small bit of hay turned hair in my hands.A tingle of awe flows through me and begins my day. by Lisa Mitchell

Bags by K.C. Kostelaz Creations Can you ever have enough bags? Bags by KC is a small home-run business in the Pacific Northwest that grew from a desire for an attractive, quality bag that wouldn't "break the bank". Handcrafted bags are made with high quality fabrics and materials to contain all of your projects and fiber goodies! They are fully lined and have boxed corners for ease of use. I use twill tape drawstrings for durability and "grip" (your bag will not come open unless you open it!). My bags come in a variety of sizes tailored with the fiber artist in mind. When you shop with Bags by Kostelaz Creations you will find fabrics and patterns that run the gamut from whimsical animal prints to fantasy, garden and sea themes to designs that tickled my fancy and hopefully yours as well! Custom orders are always welcome! Our family has been raising sheep since the early 1900s, and we've had Border Leicesters since the 1990s, so we've spent a lot of time focusing on raising these sheep with emphasis on top-quality fleeces and structural conformity, and do our best to match each buyer to their perfect fleece, whether they are spinners, felters, or other kind of fiber artist. JULY 2020
July, 24th
Friday 9am ,
I invented My Two Ladies™ out of pure frustration. There had to be a better way to knit this big and bulky blanket. It was exhausting and very time consuming, with either straight or circular needles. While at the studio, an idea popped into my head.
Alexis Mantione
Creator/Owner
My Two Ladies™ It’s more than a knitting needle. It’s more than a name. It’s a tribute to knitting and the close knit fiber arts community. It's not just yarn and stitches, but so much more.
I grabbed some knitting tools and supplies, made some modifications, and started knitting quickly and effortlessly. "How is it no one ever thought of this?”. Well I thought of it, I patented it, I manufactured it ….. and almost a year later….. My Two Ladies™ Adjustable Straight Knitting Needle System became available for all to enjoy. They are beautiful, functional and a pleasure to work with. I hope My Two Ladies™ bring as much joy to you as it has to me.
Knitting gave me the opportunity to be part of an indescribable bond between creative fiber folks of varying age, ethnic and social backgrounds, whom would probably have never met otherwise. Our joy of creating, brings us together and creates a feeling of belonging. I wish everyone could be part of a community such as ours.
Happy knitting, Alexis

Fiber Seed Chronicles
David Berryhill of Berryhill Farm
Leicester Longwools written by
Julie Lebowitz
Leicester Longwools are an average strongboned sheep breed dating back to the midland counties of Britain in the mid 1600s. A shepherd by the name of Robert Bakewell sought to improve the breed in the 1700s. He pioneered selective breeding techniques to produce a faster maturing sheep with a thick, deep body, fine bones and a “tank-like” square appearance. The “New Leicester” was the result of his success.

George Washington heard of Bakewell’s successes and purchased some rams to improve his breeding stock at his farm at Mount Vernon. They were quite common in the United States until the 1930s when newer breeds became more popular. The Liecester Longwools all but disappeared until a new herd was imported from Tasmania to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. Currently there are less than one thousand registered Leicester Longwools in the United States. They have moved up from “critically endangered” to “threatened” but they are now listed as critical in Europe and Australia.

The fiber diameter count averages 32-38 microns with lambs ranging in the mid 20s. Individual locks have medium crimp and wave and can be quite curly towards the ends. Their fleeces are known for their soft and silky luster, which sets them apart from other breeds. They are also renowned for their docile personalities and affection for their shepherds. Leicester Longwools are just one amongst the many breed of Longwools, including Teeswaters, Lincoln Longwools, Border Leicesters, Cotwolds, and Romney’s. Their fleeces are long and lustrous, with an average annual growth rate of 5-14” and weights ranging from 6-20 pound
r e t s e c i Le gwools Lon
Here in the United States, a non-profit organization called The Livestock Conservancy, was formed to promote all rare breeds of livestock, including poultry, cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits and donkeys. They have been vital to the success of saving many rare breeds. In 2019, they started a campaign called “Shave ‘Em to Save ‘Em”. Funded by a three-year grant, this campaign brings fiber artists together with rare sheep breeders. Artists sign up for a breed passbook and purchase wool from providers. As they fill up their passbooks, they receive prizes and get to sample wool from twenty-three breeds of rare sheep. Not only has this been a valuable campaign for breeders, giving them another avenue to sell their wool, but it’s also brought awareness to these special breeds that might not otherwise have been known to the fiber artist community.
