About the Bird Festival The Bird Festival began in 2015 to promote the protection of birds in San Quintín Bay. This is an annual event organized by local communities together with Terra Peninsular, a Mexican nonprofit organization that works on land protection. The festival is an opportunity for participants to enjoy activities focused on birds and nature, such as hiking, guided bird walks, boat tours and photography. Adults, families and children are welcome! Also, this is an event that has an economic impact on local communities.

“My experience attending the Bird Festival changed completely the way I think and the way I see the world we live in. I’ve met people from different parts of the world that come to celebrate and enjoy nature, learn to take care of birds, the names of species, where they live and how important it is to respect them. The tranquility of living surrounded by birds, plants and the ocean has given the chance to have great friends that love, care and teach the importance of birds”. Agustina Murillo Resident of La Chorera

Why is San Quintín Bay special for shorebirds? San Quintín has the natural features to provide refuge and food to thousands of birds; it is a unique place in Baja California with wetlands, sandy beaches, meadows and extinct volcanoes. Over 25,000 birds arrive to the bay each year! Some birds migrate to spend the winter, other are resident birds, and there are birds that breed in the summer. San Quintín Bay is one of the stopover sites that are part of the Pacific Flyway, these sites are used by birds to rest and feed during migration. We share birds with Alaska, Washington and California. Birds know no borders!

San Quintín is an essential place for bids and it is recognized internationally: Wetland of International Importance number 1775 designated by the Ramsar Convention. Shorebird Reserve since 2008 and part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN). Important Bird Conservation Area (AICA, in Spanish).

When we protect the bay we protect the birds!

5

Activities at the festival

During two days you will celebrate the bird migration and walk among extinct volcanoes and wetlands, camp near the ocean, learn about native plants and enjoy delicious fresh seafood. Be part of a great celebration with the community! Go on an adventure at the Sudoeste volcano, let the view of the wetlands and the Pacific Ocean take your breath away, and admire the unique vegetation of the area. The Bird Festival provides a space to disconnect from everyday urban life; a space to stop, breathe, and focus on what is happening NOW.

This festival is for you if: ▶ You’d like to discover the natural wonders of Baja California. ▶ You’d like to get to know San Quintín from a different perspective and witness the bird migration. ▶ You’d like to enjoy nature and surround yourself with volcanoes and wetlands. ▶ You’re interested in learning about the natural, historical and archaeological value of San Quintín.
