it was an easy decision to make,” said Williams. “And when I learned he had performed around 700 robotic procedures, I was more than ready for the surgery.” Brown operated on Williams just a few days after her initial visit and in just two weeks she was feeling like a new woman, Williams says. One week later, she walked

“I owe everything to Dr. Smith-Rayford and Dr. Brown.” Williams added that even though she had been experiencing severe pelvic pain for the past few years, she didn’t pursue a surgical solution because she didn’t want to face the prospect of undergoing a traditional hysterectomy and the accompanying scar, pain and downtime. As the pain grew worse, she was ready to consider her options, especially as her wedding date approached. Dr. Brown explained to Williams he would perform gynecologic surgery using a lessinvasive technique and she was a good candidate for a robotic-assisted removal of her ovary and accompanying cysts and fibroids using the da Vinci Surgical System available at nearby Central Mississippi Medical Center (CMMC).

down the aisle with a beaming smile, ready to enjoy married life and start a family!

The da Vinci system is an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. It enables surgeons to guide a robot’s arms to perform complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with incredible precision.

Traveling to other U.S. hospitals to teach, or serving as a preceptor by offering advice and support through phone calls is a timely endeavor, Brown admits, but it’s one he is committed to continuing. When he is back home in Mississippi, Brown performs minimally invasive hysterectomies, removes ovarian cysts and endometriosis. He feels da Vinci-trained surgeons and innovative hospitals like CMMC are establishing new standards for surgical care.

“Dr. Brown demonstrated how different this type of surgery was in comparison to the other type that required a large incision, hospital stay and long recovery, so

Inquiring about Brown’s expertise from Smith-Rayford was a fortuitous experience, Williams learned. Brown has trained over 80 physicians, nearly half of which are in Mississippi. He goes to hospitals across the country to teach other OB/GYN surgeons the innovative, less-invasive surgical techniques.

Tawanna Todd of Jackson is another example of a patient who experienced infertility problems due to severe endometriosis. After Brown performed a robotic surgery procedure to remove the problem, she was able to conceive and is now expecting a new baby. She too credits Brown with recommending this less invasive procedure, as she had put off surgery due to fear of a long recovery. “One of the negatives of my profession is seeing the difficulties many women have in either achieving or maintaining pregnancy,” Brown said. “Being able to help a great majority of patients go on to have a healthy baby after undergoing what is usually a pain- and stress-free procedure

is something of which I’m very proud. In turn, I’m happy to help other physicians obtain the skills they need to be able to help their patients. I foresee even greater strides being made in robotic surgery and as a result, even better outcomes for women.” Brown added, this minimally invasive approach offers numerous potential benefits over traditional options, including less blood loss, less pain, shorter recoveries and minimal scarring. Patients often leave the hospital after a short overnight stay and are able to return to their active lifestyles and normal everyday lives very quickly. JE

meet kelvin moore general manager of Jackson convention complex

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KELVIN MOORE, CMP

Mr. Moore, highly credentialed, has headed numerous meeting venues across the U. S. Additionally, he is a husband, and is involved with community groups such as Big Brothers Big Sister, Junior Achievement, and the Boys & Girls Club.

J

ackson Expose: When did the Jackson Convention Complex open its doors for business?

Moore: The Jackson Convention Complex officially opened its doors on January 9, 2009.

Jackson Expose’: How long have you been the General Manager of the convention complex and what are the main responsibilities of your position? 12

Moore: I’ve been the JCC’s general manager for two years now. I arrived in Jackson in October of 2011. Ultimately I am responsible for all aspects of the Complex’s operations including sales, marketing, public relations, event management, operations, security, crowd management, finance, human resources, and food & beverage. Jackson Expose: What do you like most about your job?

www.ExposeMagazineOfJackson.com

Kelvin: I’ve been in the events and facility management industry for over 20 years, the last 10 in a chief executive capacity. And there are many things I like about this industry. Being a former musician, I like the ability to remain relatively close to the music and entertainment industry. I love live events and being able to interact with people. The general manager position also provides a platform to do positive things in the communities where I’ve lived and

worked throughout my career. But the thing I think I love the most about being a general manager in this industry is the opportunities to mentor and groom young professionals. So far I’ve had the pleasure of being able to mentor 5 former employees to go on and become general managers of their own facilities. That is very gratifying. And there are a few future general managers working for me now at the JCC.

Moore: Anyone can have an event at the JCC. All you have to do is call our Sales Department and they can talk your through the process or just go to our website at www.jacksonconventioncomplex.com for general information. No event is too small.

Jackson Expose’: Tell us about your staff.

Jackson Expose: Do you have an event planning department? If so,

Moore: I have a great team here in Jackson. They are a passionate and dedicated group who love what they do. They understand our mission here is to maximize economic impact to the community, and they’re willing to put in the work required to succeed.

please tell us about it.

I love my team!

Moore: Yes we do. Once an event has been contracted, our Event Services department takes over and works with the event planner to plan all of the details. We have three people in our Event Services team. Cherre Miller is our Director of Event Services. And we have two Event Managers, Jaqueline Mitchell and Jeremiah Smith. They are all very skilled event managers and ready and willing to help with any logistical issues.

Jackson Expose’: What is your vision for the future of the Jackson Convention Complex?

Jackson Expose’: In what ways does the complex benefit the City of Jackson? Moore: The main benefit the Complex has on the City of Jackson is through economic impact. Across the country, convention centers are constructed for one broad purpose… and that is to deliver a positive economic impact for the local communities. They generate that economic impact by hosting a variety of events. Through its 1st four full years of operation (FY09 – FY12), the Complex played host to over 1,250 event days and 550,000 visitors, generating an estimated $100 Million in economic impact for the local economy. There is also a less tangible, but equally important since of civic pride that I think the JCC provides to the citizens of the Jackson and all of Mississippi. Jackson Expose’: Tell us about some of the events that have been held there over the years. Moore: The JCC has played host to wide variety of events over the years from major conventions and corporate meetings to professional and amateur sporting events. From mayoral and gubernatorial inaugural events to city wide community events like the Senior Health Fair. We’ve hosted concert and entertainment events of all genres, consumer shows, cheerleading events and we’ve event had dinosaurs in the building. We’ve pretty much done every type of event out there. Jackson Expose’: How does one go about having an event there?about your work?

Jackson Expose’: 8. What are some of the upcoming events you have scheduled for this Fall? Moore: We have a busy Fall lined up. We start off October with the Susan Koman Steel Magnolia Pink Tie Gala on October 3rd and the Gulf States Toyota 2013 Corolla Launch on October 4th. We have several conferences including the MS Association of Education, MS Association of Student Nurses, and the MS Counseling Association. We have the JSU Homecoming Concert featuring Charlie Wilson and Lyfe Jennings on October 18th, and another JSU sponsored concert for the Capital City Classic Weekend featuring Rickey Smiley on November 15th. We will also have the Nascar Drive for Diversity in late October and Discover the Dinosaurs returning in November… and much more.

Moore: .When I first arrived and held my first full staff meeting with our team, I reiterated to them what the established mission of the JCC was … namely to generate positive economic impact for the community. But I also told them what my vision was for the facility … and that was “to be recognized as the best midsized convention center in the country. Period!” That is still me vision. I believe that it is very important to have short term and longer term goals as well as visionary goals. I want us to be the best in country … in every category … the best! Our team has bought into that vision. And I think that facility users have seen that vision manifest itself in our JE level of customer service.

Increase the Number of Sales type of person or a specific group, you are more likely to connect with Per Customer them. There are several ways you can do this: Increase Back End Sales. There are basically two types of back end sales: Upselling and Cross Selling. Upselling involves offering additional products that are in the same category as the product or service that was purchased. For example, when you go to a fast food restaurant, they tyically asked you if you would like to super size your drink or super size your fries. That is upselling. An example of Cross Selling is when they ask you if you would like to add an apple pie to your purchase. Another thing you can do to increase your number sales is to have a Frequent Customer Rewards Program where you incentivise frequent customers by giving them exlusive discounts or deals that are not offered to the customer base at large.

Create a Laser Targeted Marketing Message

It can be very productive to have a marketing message that will resonate or speak directly to your potential prospects’ needs, wants or desires. If on the other hand your marketing message is directed to everyone, you could be resonating with no one at all.

I am a firm believer in treating your custumers like gold! As a matter of fact, many customers will by pass your competition time and time again to patronize you over the competition. Creating a Customer Service Plan can be a ‘‘value added’’ that will set you above the rest!
