INTERVIEW WITH

J. Lee Productions asking INTRIGUING questions

The phenomenal award-winning playwright, J. Lee, native of Jackson, Mississippi grants an interview with Expose’ Magazine of Jackson!

EMOJ: What inspired you to become a Playwright and how long have you been writing plays? J Lee: Becoming a play writer was something that just happened. I have now accepted that I have a gift of storytelling. It began in middle school while writing short “provocative” stories that I would pass around to my friends to read. In high school as the Junior Class President, it was my job to come up with a fundraiser for our class. I choose to write a play. “No Good Comes To Those Who Do Wrong” was performed during school in front of the student body of Murrah High School in 1998. There were many technical difficulties, but everyone enjoyed it. Later on in college, I found myself in the same situation when I 6

became President of the American Marketing Association. This time I wrote a stage play that would capitalize on all the mistakes that were made in my first show. Needless to say in 2004 “Dangerously In Love” was a success with no technical difficulties. Watching the crowd’s reaction to the characters I created as they came to life on stage; I knew then that’s what I wanted to do. So after graduation from Jackson State University in 2005 I decided to start J. Lee Productions.

Lee Production’s power, struggle, and strife 9th production and it was entitled “Black Love 3- The that comes with that love in our community. Blind Date Edition”- this was the third installment to a series of documentaries that take an in depth look into African American Relationships. Each installment focuses on different areas in love. This particular installment expounds on

EMOJ: Can you tell us about some of the venues where you have had your plays? J LEE: We have premiered several productions at the JSU Rose E. McCoy Auditorium here in Jackson, MS, The Alamo Theatre and Russell C. Davis Planetarium in downtown Jackson MS. We have also had productions on the Gulf Coast’s Saenger’s Theatre.

EMOJ: Tell me a little more about some your other productions? J LEE: This year J. Lee Productions celebrates 5 years of Operations. We have completed a total of 9 Productions. Including 4 stage plays (“No Good Comes To Those Who Do Wrong”, “Why Am I Single?”, “REVENGE” and “Everyone Plays The Fool”) 3 Documentaries (Black Love I, II, III) and 2 short films (“What Do The Lonely Do For Christmas” and “The Murderer”) All productions have been written/ produced and directed by J. Lee. We look forward to completing our 10th production later this year. EMOJ: What is the typical audience reaction to your plays?

EMOJ: I love the way you do your red carpet events, how do you put those together? J LEE: The red carpet preshows are normally taped before the show for promo videos to promote the productions after they have premiered.

8

J LEE: J. Lee Productions has been fortunate enough to build an audience that continues to support our productions time after time. I don’t think we would be able to continue if we did not have that continued support. The reaction and feedback we receive has been awesome. With each production we grow and we strive to provide the audience with knowledge, entertainment, and life lessons through the arts… Ultimately it’s not just a SHOW… It’s an EXPERIENCE…. EMOJ: What type of recognition have you received for your work?

www.ExposeMagazineOfJackson.com

J LEE: The work of J. Lee has received countless awards such as 2010 & 2011 Stage Play of the Year. Oue productions have been featured in several different film festivals. We have visited different college campuses in the state of MS to showcase our productions as well. J. Lee has been featured in several publications spotlighting his works. EMOJ: When can we expect another production? We are looking at completing our 10th production later on this year. It is J. Lee’s goal to write it and cast it before the end of the summer. EMOJ: I have one final question: Do people tell you that you look like ‘Baby Face’ Edmnds? J LEE: I haven’t heard Babyface in a minute; I get Big Boi and Kanye West a great deal. The J. Lee Team- is a group of individuals that aid J. Lee in putting on these various productions. They are the backbone to the production company and help keep him grounded. The J. Lee Team consist of Aretha Carmicheal, Marcell Cox, L. Sherie Dean, Jeremy Funchess, Latisha Jackson, Yolanda Lee, and Larry D. Walker.

D

ianna M. Williams, proud owner of the Dollhouse Dance Factory has been dancing since the age of 3. With encouragement from her mom, Dianna has thrived as a dancer. Dianna was trained at the Angie Luke School of dance predominantly in Tap & Jazz. Over the years majorette became a part of her life as she danced with the “Eye of The Tiger” under the leadership of Beverly Branson and Tommie Stewart. Dianna’s love for dance is outstanding and her teaching style is remarkable. From 2002 to 2007 Ms. Williams worked with the City of Jackson’s Parks and Recreation Department as the Dance Department’s instructor on the North side of Jackson at Grove Park Community Center. The City of Jackson’s dance program allotted Dianna the opportunity to grow through teaching dance styles that most kids aren’t exposed to as well as giving her the opportunity to meet new people and making long lasting relationships with the youth of Jackson. Dianna always knew that she wanted to offer MORE dance opportunities to the greater Jackson area and with the limited opportunities within the city, hence Dollhouse Dance Factory was born.

Dianna says, “With all the talented children in Jackson, more opportunities for them to thrive should exist. A lot of people don’t know that this awesome dance school exists.” Many people are taking their children outside of the Jackson area to receive services when adequate service can be received right in their own city. Dollhouse Dance Factory is a rising dance studio in Jackson with limitless possibilities. Most Dance schools specialize in a specific genre of Dance where as Dollhouse offers, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Majorette for ages 3-16. Dianna is the epitome of dance. Her love for dance is overwhelming and Dollhouse for her is not a job, it is simply a way of life. “Dancing Isn’t Just A Sport…It’s A Way of Life!!” for more information about Dollhouse Dance Factory call 601.969.4000 or go to www. dollhousedancefactory.com.

janet jackson new billionaire! According to E! News and Yahoo, Janet earned $458 million in concert earnings, $304 million from big screen roles like For Colored Girls and The Nutty Professor and $260 million in album sales. The superstar also earned a whopping $81 million from sponsorship deals. Some are questioning whether the billion dollar figure represents product sales opposed to her actual net earnings. Others argue her new billionaire husband is partly responsible for her new billionaire ranking. But if the sources quoted above are correct, she got her billion dollars the old fashion way - she earned it!
