MISS MISSISSIPPI JASMINE MURRAY Talks With Jackson Expose’ Magazine
J
ackson Expose’: Tell us about where you were born and raised.
Jasmine: I was born in Amory MS but raised in Columbus. It is a very small town. I grew up in North Haven Woods. I lived there until I moved to Starkville in high school. Jackson Expose’: At what age did you first began to sing and what were some of your early performances. Jasmine: According to my mom, I first started singing at age 2 when I would sing along with the radio in the back of the car. I got serious about singing at 13 and started taking voice lessons. I was involved in church choir and excited to get to sing in show choir too. I always remember singing on Easter Sunday and at church. Any time I was given a chance to perform I did. I even sang at a pizza restaurant one time.

MEET OUR NEW MISS MISSISSPPI JASMINE MURRAY
Jackson Expose’: I understand that you competed on the American Idol Show, tell us about that experience. Jasmine: Well, American Idol was awesome. I was fascinated by LA and the entire experience. At that time I did not understand the opportunities that would
come from it. It was a life changing experience because it made me realize I wanted to pursue a career in the music industry. I was also going to school while on the show so it taught me how to prioritize. It was an incredible experience to be surrounded by so many people who were working hard to accomplish their goals.
Jackson Expose’: What were some of the prior beauty pageants you have competed in. Jasmine: I did my school beauty review and then started competing in the Miss Mississippi’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. That is the sister pageant to Miss Mississippi for teens 13-17. Jackson Expose’: Have you done any acting? If so, tell us a little about it. Jasmine: I took theater in high school and we did several plays. I auditioned for different tv shows after American Idol. Jackson Expose’: When you were chosen as one of the finalist for the Miss Mississippi Pageant, what was going through your mind? Jasmine: I was extremely excited! I was at peace and ready to do my best when my name was called! I knew I was one step closer!
MISS MISSISSIPPI’S PLATFORM
Jasmine: My platform is called “13 Going on 30”: Teaching young girls to embrace their age. I really focus on mentoring young girls and I encourage them not to grow up too fast. I feel that young girls face so much pressure from the media and their peers to fit in or look a certain way. I encourage them to be themselves and to make smart decisions today so they can be the person they want to be tomorrow. Jackson Expose’: What is your vision after your reign as Miss Mississippi?
Jasmine: My vision is to continue promoting my platform and empowering young girls to be all that they can be. I want to leave them with the tools they need to stay on the right path so they can be all they hope to be one day. I also have plans to continue pursuing a music career and continuing my education with the scholarship provided in this organization. I want to be a positive representative of my state and my country and my vision is to serve every person I can and to give them what others have given me.
MISS MISSISSIPPI Walks the Runway!
Jackson Expose: Once you were announced as Miss Mississippi, what did it feel like? Was it surreal? Jasmine: For a moment I felt like I was dreaming and then I realized it was real! It’s still setting in for me even though it’s been a few weeks! I knew I was ready for the job and I couldn’t wait to get started! Jackson Expose’: What is your platform as Miss Mississippi?

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Interview With
Stephanie Barnes Taylor Strategist
JE: What does it mean to be a strategist and how did you discover this as a passion?
them the answers, but I ask challenging questions to help them discover the answers themselves.
Stephanie Barnes Taylor: A strategy is a plan to bring an idea into fruition. That’s my specialty. I help others to turn their ideas into realities. I have found that I can often see in others what they don’t yet see in themselves. One of the principles that guides my life is that “ I believe in the innate goodness in all of us.” That’s what I look for. I use that vision to help others build upon the goodness in their lives to become great. I discovered this passion about five years ago when I was challenged by my leadership that there were no qualified women leaders in my former organization. I developed a leadership class and requested that the first class be for women only. Helping these awesome women find and develop the leader within them helped me to find my passion. I‘ve been doing it ever since! I have helped men and women to tap into their inner greatness and be better leaders on the job, in their communities and in their personal lives.
Jackson Expose’: Why do you think most people don’t achieve their dreams?
Jackson Expose’: Do you think that most people have difficulty with knowing their greatness? And how do you help them to discover it? Stephanie Barnes Taylor: Many people underestimate their greatness. They do this largely because they have defined greatness by someone else’s terms—their parents, friends, media, society , etc. Greatness is personal. Everyone’s greatness is unique to them. I am a certified professional coach and I use my skills to focus on their unique qualities and build from there. I don’t tell 14
SBT: Many people don’t achieve their dreams because they lack confidence to really go for it! It takes courage to be great at anything. It takes courage to do something when everyone else is doing something different. We all have an innate desire to please others and sometimes we do that to our own detriment. I challenge my clients to live their lives on their own terms. This does not require being selfish nor does it mean that you don’t care about others in your life. Having courage does not mean not being afraid, but it means that you are willing to move when fear is trying to hold you back. Sometimes we are afraid to fail. I don’t really believe that failures are really failures. A failure is merely a lesson in disguise. Failure is not fatal. Never recovering from failure is what keeps people from moving forward. Sometimes people get stuck in the comfort zone that failure or inaction provides and they never move. I help people to get unstuck!
Sponsored
Jackson Expose’: “Make your job your dream job”, how can one do that? SBT: So many times, we are working for a paycheck. Clocking in and clocking out. There is no joy in our jobs! I encourage my clients to find joy in their jobs. The ultimate dream job is one where you have Joy from being your Own Boss! Entrepreneurship may not be for everyone, however. Just because you are employed, does not mean that you cannot have an entrepreneurial spirit! Any job can be a dream job when you are fulfilled by what you do! One of my favorite books is Good to Great by Jim Collins. He talks about the Hedgehog Concept as a way for businesses to become great. I was encouraged by this personally and reframed the three questions for personal and professional growth: 1. What are you the best in the world at doing (and, equally important, what you cannot be the best in the world at) 2. What drives you? 3. What are you deeply passionate about? A dream job is where all of these answers intersect. You love what you do because your job is connected to your passions. Jackson Expose’: What is meant by “Create your own golden parachute”? SBT: One of my favorite sayings is, “When traveling long distances, always carry a spare!” That was inspired by a conversation with a college friend a long time ago and it stuck with me. To me it means to always think beyond your present situation and prepare for your next blessing. You don’t have to wait for a new job position to open before you are ready to receive it. You should always seek to sharpen existing skills or develop new ones. Even the best steel sword needs sharpening from time to time to remain at its best performance. A dull sword may work, but it takes longer and you have to work harder to get good results. Your mind is like a sword. If you don’t sharpen your mind from time to time, it will become dull and less effective. Expand your horizons from where you are. When you are always sharp, you are always ready for the next opportunity that awaits you. You create your own way because you are continuously improving and making yourself better!
Jackson Expose’: What is Fabulous University all about? SBT: I am very excited about this new program! Fabulous University focuses on Motivational and Empowerment for Women with the purpose of helping women to find their voice, embrace self-love, discover their worth, and be their personal source of joy. I help women to find their fabulous! Being Fabulous does not mean perfection, but being fabulous means knowing you are worthy of your shine! We were not meant to fit in. We were meant to be our own person. Fabulous is not tied to any material acquisition, the way you look, clothes you where or what you have, but a self-love that lights us from within! Jackson Expose’: What kind of events do you have coming up? SBT: I will host a symposium on the Mississippi Gulf Coast this Fall. Beginning in October, I will begin a seminar series based on my book, Finding the Fabulous in you. I will host a three-day conference in the Spring of 2015. More details will be available on my website, www.fabulousuniversity.me. I can also customize seminars onsite across the region. I can travel to wherever my clients are. Most of my impact is through coaching either over the phone by web-conference or in person. I coach individuals and groups. Although Fabulous University is focused on women, I help men too! In 2012 Honey launched her Facebook Page and within 5 months she was invited to PAINT THE TOWN RED, a political luncheon where Governor Phil Bryant was the keynote speaker and where she had a chance to showcase one of her favorite recipes - her famous HONEY SPICE TEA which was really a big hit.
“And of course there’s a lot of work involved and I’ve had more days than I can count that I had to face my own fears and overcome them and I’m sure there are more to come but that’s exactly what having faith in God will allow us to do. To believe that what we want is truly possible”
Evelyn Fletcher (Right-Middle Photo)

While growing up in Marks, Mississippi, God, church and education were all I knew in my parents’ household. “ At age18, Evelyn left home to serve our country by joining the U.S. Army. “Now many years later and many gifts and talents granted by God, I focus my life and businesses around helping others. “ As a Credit and Debt Management Coach, Evelyn helps consumers become educated about their credit report, their credit score, how to get out of debt, and how to start their own businesses. “I teach consumers how to dispute inaccurate and erroneous information on their credit reports, how to deal with debt collectors, and
Samanda Marshall (Right-Bottom Photo)
“Over 14 plus years ago I thought I knew what I wanted to do professionally” says Samanda. “Therefore, I decided to pursue a degree and career in Health Information Management that awarded me the opportunity to earn a certification and become a Medical Coding Consultant.” “After years of traveling nationwide, working remotely, meeting new people, and learning more about myself, I realized that I had a bigger purpose and sincere passion for helping other people pursue their goals and dreams. This inspired me to earn my Bachelors in Business Administration and my MBA in Marketing.” After overcoming fears and obstacles, Samanda decided to apply what she learned and stepped out on faith to start her own marketing and small business development consulting services firm known as Motivus Momentum Agency (MMA). “I am a positiveminded woman of faith who is blessed to own a company that strongly believes ‘Positive People Propel Positive Results’. My motivation is in knowing that if I keep God first in all that I do, He will crown my efforts with success (Proverbs 3:5-6).

CHEF MONTE A native of Nigeria, Chef Monday “Monte” Agho arrived in America over a quarter century ago. When he discovered the Cajun and creole cuisine of New Orleans, he found his true culinary calling. He has been a Jackson favorite ever since. Along with his wife Ellen, Chef Monte and his staff offer a large menu with an emphasis on fresh fish and steaks. He’s also known for his loyal followers. “I still have customers from twenty years ago who love the bread pudding. Others drive from as far away as Memphis for the Voodoo Ribeye.” The Voodoo Ribeye is rubbed with Monte’s mix of herbs and spices, seared to your specification, topped with fried shrimp and oysters, served with a vegetable medley and creamy Fettucine Alfredo.
22
“YOU BETTER COME HUNGRY, CHEF MONTE IS COOKING!” A favorite appetizer is the stuffed shrimp – a tangy, creamy concoction of fresh Gulf shrimp, seafood dressing, crab meat, and Imperial sauce – Monte’s take on the classic New Orleans remoulade. Monte’s also features a large selection of great wines, along with a full bar. Enjoy your meal inside surrounded by wall-sized murals, or outside in the courtyard under the shade of umbrellas and trees. Take a look at the dinner and lunch menus, and you’ll see why you should be there – Chef Monte’s cooking! Click here to go to his website.
