Dr. Charmin Y. Amderson This Is What Victory Looks Like

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Charmin Anderson Who is looking for someone to fight for them? For those who are, Dr. Charmin Y. Anderson is ready and waiting to answer the call. The Hampton, VA resident is the founder of Fighting 4 Me, a powerful affirmation and movement that was developed as a result of some personal battles she has faced in life. After a bout with cancer, suffering a stroke, experiencing domestic violence, and the loss of her twin girls she decided to create something would teach women how to turn their circumstances into a superpower. This is when she began to fight! Anderson is a domestic violence coach, nonprofit startup consultant, and sits on the board as VP of the 501c(3) nonprofit organization, Hope With A Vizion. She’s also a mother, friend, sister, and lover of life. She is also very fond of music, particularly African music, and has a heart for poetry and dancing. However, she is most passionate about helping people to help others. With all the things that Anderson is involved with, she is most comfortable when she can write. “I have always been a writer, and it’s one of my favorite things to do. I use writing as a positive outlet to express my emotions,” she says. Anderson passion for writing has involved into some impressive productions. She has written several books, including one about her own life and personal struggles, and is currently working on a few others. “Writing my story allowed me to write my way to freedom. It was my way to finally take the necessary steps to heal,” she shares. “I wrote my first book, Behind My Smile; Every Woman’s Worst Nightmare, years ago. I pondered over the idea of releasing it mainly because I wrote it from a very angry and hateful place. I didn’t want it to be the kind of work I shared with my readers, so I trashed the initial draft and rewrote it,” she says. That was a good move for Anderson because the book made it on Amazon’s best seller’s list within 15 minutes of its release. Her first book tells the story of what happened to Anderson and gives readers the insight to how that relationship in reference developed. It also gives intimate details of her life and some of the traumatic experiences she experienced not only as a child, but also as an adult. Her newest production, When Dead Flowers Bloom (available October 2019) will be released, it will be the continuation of Behind My Smile, Every Woman’s Worst Nightmare. It starts off with a heavy hitter letter that Anderson says might upset a few. “These are real feelings that most people are afraid to admit they’ve had,” she says. The book will fill also fill in all the empty blanks that most people have from her first writing. “Neither of the books were easy to write but are essential parts of my healing process. I believe they will inspire other women to continue to fight for themselves.”
Continued on the next page 77
Anderson says the most enjoyable part of life and career is the opportunities they provide her to help others. “I realize that trying to help others isn’t a one-man job. I want to create a domino effect in which everyone whose life I impact, will in return step up and help others,” she says. Though by only reading Anderson’s books, one might not be able to see the difficulties she faces while writing them. She shares the task can be quite difficult. “The hardest thing for me was allowing people into the vulnerable parts of my life. Writing my book was one thing, but talking to people face to face, was something completely different. It was kind of scary. I would see and feel their emotions and hear their comments as I talked. Once I published my book, that was it. There was no more hiding, and it was extremely hard to put myself on the front lines especially when the background was a safe space for me,” Anderson said. Anderson says that her two children are the driving force for all that she does. “Statistics say they should be on medication and drugs and be criminals. But they are not. Instead they are both successful and living their best lives and by doing so make me so proud to be their mommy,” she says. Anderson hopes that her efforts of trying to be a constant representation of winning, others may benefit as well. “It is easy to get lost in a world that is so full of pain and heartaches. However, in the process of helping others, we must ensure that we do our due diligence by taking great care of our greatest asset, ourselves,” she says. “Everything that I have endured in my life has made me into the woman that I am today. My goal is to assist others with obtaining their breakthrough.” Her plans on moving forward are to help as many women as possible. “I personally believe that there is nothing more powerful than a movement of women standing on the front lines in unison and fighting for themselves,” she says. She is also in the process of turning her book into a feature film. Her third book, Fighting 4 Me; I Won’t Stop, is set to be released in February 2020. h

Jasmine Lowe Be Bare Inc.
By Terry L. Watson Photos by Be Bare Inc. Jasmine Lowe is a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of Be Bare Inc. Be Bare offers a personalized setting that creates a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere for its clients. They offer a wide range of waxing services including Brazilian, Bikini, and Eyebrow Styling. Jasmine shares that Be Bare is dedicated to not just removing hair, but also taking care of the skin during and after the process. “We use a steaming process that allows the hair to be removed smoother and is less painful to the client,” she says. “We also provide services to clients through an appointment- only system. This allows us to follow a customer-friendly model of a no rush, no wait based service, giving customized blocks of time which are allocated to each client according to their specific needs.” Be Bare Inc. was launched in 2017 as a result of Jasmine spending previous years gaining industy experience working as a waxing specialist for a major waxing salon. That opportunity inspired her to venture out and start her own business. “After seeing how customers were looked at as numbers instead of humans, I was determined to create a business dedicated to making the client feel happy with the services, and cherished as well,” she says. Be Bare’s typical clients are women who are seeking a longer lasting way to remove hair instead of shaving. Jasmine shares the experiences her business offers are what make it worth while. “I love to engage with my clients and ensure they are happy. Waxing can put someone in a vulnerable state, so I work hard to make sure my clients feel comfortable. I love to educate them on the way to take care of their skin before and after a wax,” she says. Being a entrepreneur has challenged Jasmine in several areas. “I’ve never been a marketer or networker because of a lack of confidence and knowledge. However, I quickly realized that it would be impossible for me to advance as a business owner if I didn’t master these things and break down my own barriers. So I found mentors, books, and videos to help me grow my skill set and professionalism. I also focused on educating myself on various topics such as communication, networking, and business methods to build up my confidence,” she says. Moving forward, Jasmine hopes to expand her business and share Be Bare Inc. with more people. “I would like to touch millions of lives and provide employment opportunities. I would also like to instill the value of appreciation. There is a lack of education on genuine customer service and I want all of my employees to see the power it has,” Jasmine shares. “Customer service is golden and education is key. When you are good to people, they are in return good to you.” Her advice for others who may follow in her footsteps is to always have an eagerness to learn. “You stop growing when you stop learning,” she says. We also ensure that our clients are equipped with the knowledge of how to keep it that way.” Brian has over 10 years of combined underwriting, forensic accounting, business analysis, acquisition, divesture-planning, and risk-management experience. He started BK Credit Consultants in May 2016. “It was actually started by accident. I posted my credit score on Facebook, which was 820 at the time, and asked “Who wants great credit like this? My post went viral and my inbox was blowing up. I was giving away free advice and soon realized that I could turn this into a business. The rest is now history because BK Credit Consultants have grown faster than I could have ever imagined,” he says.

The first is phase is disputing. The next one is rebuilding credit, and the final phase is sustaining credit. BK Credit Consultants typical clients are people who are having credit issues and trouble getting the things they need to live their everyday life. “I enjoy assisting people with getting approved for homes, cars, credit cards, and lines of credit. By doing so I am able to restore their confidence and help them get their life back,” he says. “The average credit score for our clients who are starting the program is around 560.” Brian is motivated to providing personalized services to each and every client. He takes the time to become well acquainted with his clients and their particular financial challenges, and develop and execute an individual recovery strategy. “Helping clients to feel empowered and restore their financial confidence and autonomy has been another invaluable yield of my consulting services and exceptional customer service,” he says. Like most businesses, BK Credit Consultants has faced it share of challenges. The most common challenge for Brian he shares has been people being unrealistic. “Most people have spent 10 or more years destroying their credit and thinking I can rectify their situation in 30 days. Credit restoration is a process and takes time to get back on track. Social media has fooled people into thinking that it can be done overnight and legally, that is not possible,” he says. Brian has dedicated his life and career honor his late mother. “All of my companies are named after my mom, Brenda Kaye. Everything I do is for her and making her proud is my only goal,” he says. He also offers some advice to others who may follow in his footsteps. “Be diligent and patient and please don’t chase the money. Perfect your craft and the money will find you. Also, educate people leaving them more informed than they were before meeting you,” he says.

When asked if he could change anything about is journey, Brian says he would change the way the world looks at entrepreneurship. “We are taught to get good grades, graduate high school, go to college, and get a good job. Once we work for 40 years, we can retire and then start living our lives. I want to give kids more resources and let them know that you don’t have to be a college graduate to be successful. We must teach them that trade schools are just as valuable. You don’t have to work for someone else. You can be your own boss. Entrepreneurship should be presented to our kids as a viable option,” Brian says. Moving forward, Brian shares his plan is to keep expanding the BK Brand. “I want to travel and do credit seminars and share my information because it needs to be seen and heard by the masses. I want people to understand how much power a great credit score will give you and how many doors will open for you. I want to also present this information to high school students. I am a advocate for teaching financial literacy before we allow students to graduate high school and enter the real world and not possess the proper tools to succeed. It is very necessary and I have made this my mission to ensure that nobody is left behind,” he says. h

Jill D. Mays Ezer Counseling, LLC
By Terry L. Watson - Photos by Jill D. Mays Jill D. Mays is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience in the behavioral health field. She has been recognized by Atlanta Magazine along with former Atlanta Mayor, Shirley Franklin, news anchor Monica Kaufman Pearson, and a list of other notable women who are making a mark in the world. Jill’s passion for helping others has led her to dedicate most of her career to developing and leading successful clinical and service provision programs, especially for women and children, in Atlanta, and throughout the United States. Springing out of her own lived experience and that of close family members and friends, Jill is committed to serving as a strong advocate for the unique behavioral health needs of women, and people of color. Currently, Jill manages a small, but successful private practice, Ezer Counseling, LLC, in Stone Mountain, GA, Ezer Counseling specializes in addressing women’s issues, including infertility, mood disorders, substance use, grief, life stage transitions, and marital/pre-marital/ relationship counseling. “While I serve a highly diverse clientele, my typical clients are African American women and married couples. Ezer Counseling is fully committed to the principles of cultural competency and cultural humility. My couch is a welcoming spot for anyone who seeks services, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, creed, gender, gender expression, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or occupational status,” she states. By definition, the word Ezer means to help or support. It can also refer to a helper or one who assists and serves another with what is needed. Ezer is also a Hebrew word that is found in the Holy Bible, in the book of Genesis (2:18 -20), and used in the Old Testament in the context of vitally important and powerful acts of rescue and support. The tagline for Ezer Counseling, “Right Beside You with Help, Hope, and Healing” Jill says is rooted in this perspective. “I intentionally offer primarily evening and weekend appointments because many people can’t afford to miss work or school to come to counseling,” Jill says. “Most providers don’t see clients after 5:00 pm. With our schedule, we can add some flexibility in availability. Our outof-pocket fees are set lower than a lot of other therapists in the metro Atlanta area to assist those who don’t have health insurance, coupled with the challenge of paying traditional self-pay rates.” Furthermore, Jill acknowledges the stigma that exists with people of color not getting help with addressing mental health and substance use disorders. In her role, she wanted to take away at least a few barriers to help people engage more. “My job is to provide a caring, safe environment for clients to begin healing, and to give them the tools and techniques to understand their own thoughts and emotions, and where these are coming from. By doing so, they will be able to come to their own conclusions about what to do with their life, and ultimately achieve a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. My special blend of cognitive behavioral therapy and strengths-based eclectic techniques help guide and inspire clients to achieve more of their personal and professional goals,” she says.

Jill is currently the Director of the Office of Federal Grant Programs and Cultural & Linguistic Competency at the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). There she oversees the development and implementation of DBHDD’s cultural and linguistic competency framework. She was instrumental in launching the state’s highly successful Forensic Peer Mentor Program, which allows men and women who have experienced a mental illness and been involved with the criminal justice system, to go back into the prisons and provide encouragement and transition assistance to other returning citizens. Jill has also served as Director of Women & Children’s Services for Atlanta Mission for nearly 15 years, and as Regional Outreach & Resource Development Coordinator for the Disaster Distress Helpline. In that role, she helped to establish the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health services Administration’s (SAMHSA) first-ever 24/7 crisis hotline and texting service for anyone in the US experiencing emotional distress related to a natural or man-made disaster. Jill is a highly sought-after consultant and trainer in the areas of general and women’s behavioral health services, jail diversion, trauma, homeless services, disaster mental health, behavioral health/trauma awareness and stigma reduction for law enforcement, as well as marriage enrichment, and a variety of Christian topics. Jill also has extensive federal level training experience, including diversity workshops for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and crisis counseling programs for FEMA and SAMHSA. When asked what she loves most about her profession, Jill shares that it’s the look on a client’s face after the “aha” moment arrives, and they finally figure out an answer to a question they’ve been struggling with for years. “I love it when a couple who has been estranged for months finally remembers what they loved about each other and are able to forgive, heal, and reconcile,” she says. “I also love teaching, training, and mentoring. One of my bucket-list experiences is to be a college professor. I have a strong desire to educate, persuade, and lead others for their benefit.”

Jill’s life has been greatly impacted by her parents, Reverend Charles and the late First Lady Ruth Duncan. Her father is a Baptist Pastor, and while growing up Jill watched her parents model the importance of following God’s calling to serve, teach, and love those in need. “At 87, my Daddy is still one of the hardest working and committed people I know. I learned a valuable work ethic from him,” she says. She also credits her family for being the foundation for her career. “Ezer Counseling wouldn’t exist without my husband and my children. My husband and I got married five months before I graduated with my master’s in counseling from Georgia State, and he’s been there for this whole journey. I always want them to know how much I appreciate their love and support. I’m grateful for the privilege of being called ‘Mom’.” Whatever the future has in store for Jill and Ezer counseling, one thing is for sure is that her love for others and her desire to help will not change. Coming in October, she will be starting GōWLUp! (pronounced “Goal Up”), which stands for “Godly Wives Looking Up”, a Coaching & Connecting Meetup. Scheduled to meet on the first Friday of the month, the group will explore various topics such as hot and healthy relationships, conflict resolution, communication, respect, intimacy, skill-building, cooking demonstrations, massage techniques, parenting tips, home décor and more. She is also narrowing down topics and genre for a book(s) she plans to author. h

The ability to obtain a mortgage, car loan, job, promotion or rent an apartment is all tied to one thing most people do not often think about - Credit. Though established in 2016, Pretty Credit officially launched on April 25, 2017. Pretty Credit is a credit restoration company located in the heart of Greenville, South Carolina. Owners, Pretty Washington and Elliott C. Washington Jr. strive to help everyone achieve their finance and credit goals. “The reason why I started my own credit restoration company was due to adverse credit issues I personally experienced,” says Pretty. “Unfortunately, I was told all the wrong things to do, such as contact the consumer reporting agencies (CRA’s) and by doing so the derogatory accounts on my consumer credit report would automatically be fixed. However, that was misguided information.” In her experience, she was sent from one lender to the next and became frustrated because she felt that no progress was being made. So Pretty decided to take matters into her own hands and began educating herself about the consumer credit laws to find out what kind of rights we’re in place to protect consumers. On her quest, Pretty sought the advice of a friend in California who had his own credit repair company. He gave her some useful information, including the computer software she needed to start learning how to fix her own credit. She shares the process lasted for nearly two years, but eventually she was able to raise her credit score from the low 400’s into the 700’s. Pretty says most of her clients are seeking fast results and that only about ten percent have realistic expectations because they don’t understand how credit repair works or exactly what to expect. Though she explains the process from A-Z putting emphasis on the time frame and that it must not be rushed. “It takes time. It’s not an overnight fix. By law, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion have up to 30-45 days to complete the dispute investigation. Determining what is on your credit reports is the first step to determine the length of time it could take to successfully complete our credit restoration program,” she shares. Pretty Credit provides a comprehensive credit restoration program that includes a free credit consultation. They also offer a paid credit assessment which includes a credit analysis report breakdown of all three credit reporting agencies. This credit assessment provides their clients with detailed information that’s weighing their consumer scores down. It also includes a customized plan of action, designed to help increase their credit scores.

One part of the credit assessment is to discuss budget and finances to ensure their clients can afford the credit restoration program. Pretty shares that a satisfactory debt-to-income ratio is required to successfully complete the credit restoration program. “Our goal is to help improve the overall credit rating of everyone that seek our services,” she adds. For existing business owners and those interested in starting a business, Pretty Credit offers business credit services which are designed to help business owners utilize their company finances for their business. Business Credit is separate from consumer credit and the credit limits are astronomically higher. With business credit you use your EIN number and not your SSN for credit purposes. Most business owners or entrepreneurs don’t even know that business credit exist or how to go about establishing it. Our business credit program comes with a 100% Money Back Guarantee that if you follow our instructions to the letter, your business will get $50K in business credit within six months or we will refund your money. The most recent program added is called “Financial Fitness” which teaches consumers how to save money, get out of debt and utilize their finances in the best way possible. Our goal is to help our clients create generational wealth. Pretty Credit’s target market is South Carolina, but they also serve clients in other states throughout the country. Community outreach is an important part of the Pretty Credit business model. “Our main goal is to empower and buildup our communities. By engaging with people in community spaces, church events, and non-profits, they can work together to spread the word and tell other’s what good credit can do for a person,” Pretty states.
Pictured with Pretty and Elliott from left to right are the members of the Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce
Debbie Gresham, Pat Pomeroy, Kim Guthrie, and Diana Jo Toledo The goal of Pretty Credit is to have every client complete their program in (6-12) months. “We’ve had some clients complete the program in three months, but (6-12) months is the average goal. We want all our clients in the 700 plus credit club. That’s a good score to have to get some of the best interest rates and to lower your risk factors during the loan qualification process. It is not required to have an 850-credit score to get some of the best interest rates on the market. But if that’s what you want, then by all means go for it, but you only need to be in the 700’s score range,” she says. Many of Pretty Credit’s clients are seeking home ownership. She advises them to ensure their debt-to-income ratio is low. By doing so, they will be able to get the best interest rate on their mortgage loan. After they get their approval letter and before closing. During this time, it is very important not to create any additional lines of credit. Any changes to a consumer’s credit report or finances can ultimately prevent a successful closing on a new home. Even more, consumers can save time and prevent a loss of credit score points by simply being aware of their credit status.

Clients are held accountable through a Client Success Checklist, which is an itemized list of action steps for the consumer to do in order to successfully complete their credit restoration program. It’s always the mission of Pretty Credit to give our clients the best advice to help them achieve their finance and credit goals. What makes Pretty Credit different from other credit repair companies is their ability to connect on various levels with their clients. “Every client is like a member of our family. Building a relationship with them allows us to relate to each person, unlike some companies who just wants to get you into a program and take your money. We work with you every step of the way. By being accessible to our clients, we believe that it makes them feel more at ease. Our clients will always have an advocate in their corner,” Pretty says. The newest addition to Pretty Credit is that of Pretty Washington is becoming a licensed realtor. In this role she can help clients get approved for their new home loan after completing the credit restoration program. “This means I get to be a part of the process from beginning to end and witness the joy of seeing someone buy their dream home. Most people don’t know what all they need to do -- they don’t have a realtor, or don’t understand how lenders work. This allows us to be a one-stop shop for our clients. This opens up the process to people who may not be qualified for a home, but can come to one place, clean up their credit, get qualified and get to their end goal,” says Pretty. Pretty is a nationally licensed Certified Credit Consultant. She has enjoyed a career in finance and credit that spans over ten years. She understands that in order to remain relevant in her profession and to be able provide her clients with the best services and results, she must continue to educate and equip herself first. She does this by speaking on panel discussions on credit repair, attending credit seminars and conferences. She has also served as a keynote speaker at the Credit Expo in Orlando, Florida. “I have a passion for this, and I absolutely love it. This is the profession that God chose for me to work in, which allows me to help people repair their credit, fix their finances and transform their lives. God is the CEO of Pretty Credit. If it wasn’t for my faith and trust in him, we would not be who we are today and for that I am extremely grateful,” says Pretty. h

Eric Bell Knows Fashion Eric Bell describes himself as a kid who grew up on the Northside part of Greensboro. He was raised by John and Latonya Bell and attended Rankin Elementary and Middle School. He is also a graduate of Northeast High School. “Growing up I’ve always been into fashion but in the late 90’s and 2000’s men were looked down on for being fashion designers. That didn’t stop me. I went to school thinking I wanted to be a sports agent but really I wanted to design clothes and sneakers. I attended North Carolina A&T for two years, but didn’t complete my program. Instead I landed a job at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro and worked there for ten years. And then defining moment for my career arrived in December 2018. That is when I decided it was time for me to give my two weeks notice and pursue my dreams,” he shares. Eric admits that during the time after he left his stable job to work for himself, he was a bit scared. However, since that time he says the joy that has come from taking that leap of faith is immeasurable. Now he offers various products including sweatshirts, crewnecks, tracksuits, bodysuits, slides, hats, shirts, jeans, and more. Eric is inspired mostly by his mother and friends. He credits his mother for bestowing her knowledge of the business world into him. “Without her, I would be lost and confused. She’s the only business person I know of in my family, and one of the first women to have her own screen printing business in the city of Greensboro. She is always encouraging me to want more,” he says. “My friends inspire me because they push me like it’s their brand.” The path that Eric has taken has presented its own share of challenges. Yet, he says he wouldn’t change anything. “The ups and downs have made me who I am today. They have made me stronger. God doesn’t make any mistakes so trying to change my outcome isn’t within my thoughts.” By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company, LLC
Some have known for a while, and for many others, the news is just arriving at their doorstep, but Greensboro is now home to serious fashion. Eric Bell is the creative genius behind ThaBlackTopDesigns. He is also the brain child of MonkeyFace, a urban-focused fashion line whose popularity is increasing by leaps and bounds. Eric created his brand in 2013. He I started out by making hoodies for himself. “I wasn’t trying to make a brand, I just got tired of spending lots of money on other brands of fashion every other week. I already had an eye for fashion so I knew I could create some nice pieces for myself. I wore one of my hoodies to a Jada Kiss concert and posted a picture with him. The response was mind-blowing and I couldn’t believe how many people asked how they could order one of my hoodies,” he says.
Eric also offers advice to others who may follow in his footsteps. “You must get prepared for the long nights. Don’t ask someone how they feel about your clothing pieces. You have to wear them and love them first before a customer will approve of it. Never give up and mean what you say, and do what you mean,” he says. The future looks very bright for ThaBlackTopDesigns and Eric. He already has plans to conduct his first fashion show, exclusively for his brand. “I want the entire city to show up and have an astonishing time. After the show, I hope that a big company comes and does a deal with me so all of my clothing is in stores worldwide,” says Eric. h
The following week he sold over a hundred hoodies. A year or so later, he created MonkeyFace. The first few items he made sold pretty well, but he shares that once he started making tracksuits, things picked up enormously.

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Shirley Crawford Due to the face that she wears so many hats, it can be quite challenging to describe Shirley “Shirl-E” Crawford with only a few words. Her constant devotion to her family and community speaks volumes of how she has impacted the lives of so many individuals. Still, there is more work that has to be done, and she appears ready to answer the call. “I’m a passionate force for good that was placed on earth to teach, share, and repeat,” she states. Shirley is the Executive Director and cofounder of the Women’s Business Center RVA (WBCRVA) in Richmond, Va. and the owner of 2nd Chance Consulting, a small business consulting group that stresses the importance of first impressions with its clients. She also manages HEARTT (Helping Educate and Revitalize Through Technology), and is the founder of a Haitian nonprofit. She is a small business whisperer, a great aunt, daughter, sister, ordained minister, entrepreneur, teacher, speaker, author, business consultant, missionary, side hustler, and dreamer. In her own words, Shirley describes herself as a “WorkHARDAholic™”. The Women’s Business Center RVA helps women entrepreneurs to start, sustain and succeed in business by providing support, small business consulting, seminars, advisors, below market office space, co-working, mailbox rentals, meeting space, and simply a helping hand. The focus of 2nd Chance Consulting is to provide entrepreneurs an external eye to their business by offering the necessary tools and resources to move from idea to culmination, from sustainability to supremacy in the arenas of their product or service. This is accomplished by providing her clients assistance with starting a business, marketing, team management and development, assessments, coaching, and more.
“God is first, my family is second, and I am third.”
Shirley says, HEARTT provides assistance to Haiti, which she describes as a country where the effects of the digital divide are blatantly evident. “HEARTT empowers individuals to be self supporting by teaching computer skills such as typing and Microsoft Office. CollabHERation empowers all women by bringing together resources and tools to provide mentorship, accountability and implementation tools,” she says. “Some of my favorite seminar and speaking topics include Networking for Introverts, Introduction to Social Media to Put Up or Shut Up, Moving your Dreams to Reality, and How to Start Your Nonprofit Organization,” she says. She also has a thriving interest for entrepreneurial and motivational subject matters and has recently started the weekly WorkHARDAholic™ vlog as a home for individuals who are just as busy as she.

If the roots of Shirley’s existence are examined, it may become very clear of where she gets the drive to serve. “I come from an entrepreneurial family where you earned a paycheck, not an allowance. My mother and my father had a small construction business and I was raised to believe that the American dream was to own a house, car, dog, a couple of adopted kids, and your own business. When I went to college I learned that for others, the dream was to go work for Corporate America. At that point I began my mission to educate people that you should at least have a side hustle,” she shares. Shirley’s recommendation of a side hustle is clear. “Corporate paychecks and pensions are not guaranteed. If you were fired tomorrow could you survive a week? Everyone should have a side hustle that is able to help you to get by or at the very least maintain for a year,” she says. Shirley credits her mother and father for having the biggest impact on her life. She also finds inspiration from others. “My mother had six children. She also only had an eighth grade education but was amazing with the financial side of business. In addition to being one of my church’s first missionaries, she is an author, song writer and entrepreneur. She went through a lot so whenever I dare to think that I can’t, I reflect on her and shut my mouth, and I then get to work.” Shirley remains attached to her calling and to those who she serves. “I keep a box of tissues in my office for the tears that fall in there. My office is a safe place where others know there is someone who cares about them. I will tell them the truth and allow them to talk about their highs and lows, failures and successes, and their dreams and aspirations. Most importantly, I let people know that I’m attached to them, and not their business. So if their “baby” is ugly (as it’s a phrase that I often use as people think of their businesses as their baby being a living, breathing being that is birthed out of themselves) I will let them know and help them to figure out what should be done about it,” she says. Shirley states that she wouldn’t change a thing about the course of her life. “All things work together for my good and that includes the bad stuff. The only job that I was ever fired from made me a better manager. My sister’s murder made my family closer and brought me back to Richmond. Every job gave me skill sets that I get to use every day and I’m able to consult with people from diverse backgrounds such as authors, film producers, accountants and CEO’s. It all brought me here and I fear that if I changed even one iota, I wouldn’t be living this blessed, amazing life right now,” she says. In the future, Shirley plans to continue growing the Women’s Business Center and have global locations in place to empower women around the world. She is also working on having a consistent social life and hopes to spend as much time on the beach and traveling as possible. “I just plan to be happy and stay happy,” she says.

Aleta Danielle Life, Business, and Faith
By Terry L. Watson Photos by Aleta Danielle
Her brand is titled “Live your Dream.” In more context, the message that Aleta Danielle of Greenville, SC shares is quite clear. “It is common to live within comfortable means. At times, that practice is very necessary. However, there are other times in our lives when we should relinquish the safety nets and take a leap of faith,” she shares. Aleta is a wife, mother, sister, friend, and accomplished business woman. As a Realtor with Ponce Realty Group, she works diligently to provide professional, relevant, accurate, real estate services on a consistent basis. This is done while also addressing the needs of her clients, both known and unknown. She brandishes a Bachelors degree in Business Management and has over 15 years of experience working in a business capacity, coupling that with a creativeness that only God can give. “Sometimes the answer is not in a book or offered in a classroom setting. Being able to adapt, bend, or even dream bigger can make the difference between me succeeding or failing. I pride myself as being the eyes and ears of my clients,” she shares. “I became a Realtor because I had a passion to help people. Even more, I am privledged to be a part of the of home-ownership process — from start to finish — for individuals. Aleta was born and raised in Waukegan, IL. At the age of 19, she moved to South Carolina, due to her dad’s job relocating. Her foundation is rooted in her faith and being in God. “My faith and belief in Jesus has been my rock, my inspiration, and my constant everything. With Him, I have all I will ever need for every venture and circumstance, whether big or small,” she says. With the support of her family, Aleta’s circle is complete. Her son and daughter, whom she describes as her pulse and heartbeat, are the driving force for her both personally and professionally. “Family is important to me and inspire me to be my very best,” she says. As a Realtor, the opportunity comes with its own set of challenges. “For me the challenge is not being able to meet every need, every time. Sometimes, there are tough decisions that have to be made, which is never easy to deliver,” she says. Aleta offers some advice for others who may follow in her footsteps. “Be true to who you are, not who you wan to portray for the world, but WHO you really are...genuinely and unapologetically. Stay away from comparing yourself to others. There is only one you. No one has it all together, all of the time. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. Embrace and live life in your own lane, it takes the pressure off trying to keep up with others. Take the high road, the low one is crowded. The key to living a long prosperous life, you must laugh often (including at yourself). Enjoy the journey. Trust the process. Learn to dance in the rain and most importantly, believe in yourself. LIVE YOUR DREAM!
Moving forward Aleta hopes to assist countless families buy and sell home, after home. This includes from starter homes to vacation homes, to rental properties and dream houses. “The sky is the limit and I plan to continue building my brand and share the gifts of which God has blessed me with,” she shares. “Stay tuned!” h

Hampton Roads - Sept./Oct. 2019
By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company, LLC When the need arises for someone to have their vehicle towed, it can sometimes be a dreadful experience. Whether it be due to a disabled vehicle, flat tire, or traffic accident, the inconveneince that accompanies the need is usually what is dreaded and remembered mostly. Fortunately, there is a company that has set their sights on changing the towing and hauling industry. J & G Towing, LLC , is a small family owned towing company based out of Greensboro, NC. They offer some of the best tow services available within the state of North Carolina. These services include 24 Hour Emergency Towing, Lock Outs, Motorcycle Towing, Roadside Assistance, Battery Jumps, Refeuling, Tire Changes, and Winch Out services (up to 150 ft). J & G Towing, LLC was started up in July 2017. The company is owned and operated 26 year old, Gavin Barner. Originally from Greensboro, NC, Gaving grew up in Charlotte. After graduating from high school in Greensboro, he later attended North Carolina A & T University before deciding to join the work force. He worked for years at a car wash, along with delivering appliances and furniture, before he found himself in the working in the towing industry. Before starting the company, Gavin shares there were a few hurldes he had to conquer. “I was at a point in life where I was tired of doing a lot of heavy lifting, so when the opportunity presented itself, I didn’t hesitate to jump at it. My uncle, whose namesake represents the (J of J & G Towing, LLC) wanted to start a new business but didn’t have any idea what to do. I was told that towing was a good industry to work in, so we took the risk and bought a truck, and later obtained an LLC and immediately started advertising,” he shares. As his business began to take off, Gavin shares that he was fortunate to have a few experienced towing professionals mentor and guide J & G Towing along. “Mike at Abracadabra Towing and Rico at EZ Towing & Recovery has been a huge helpt to me. Between these two guys, they keep me on my toes. As I learn and grow in the towing industry, they help me to keep a level head, and assisted in developing me into a firm business man.”
For Gavin, family is his biggest inspiration. “I come from a pretty big family that is rooted in greatness, on both sides. They are all so supportive of anything I do and my goal is to keep making progress with this business and keep making them proud,” he says.
Gavin says what he loves most about what he does is the opportunity to help people get out of stressful situations. He also relishes in the opportunity to represent black businessmen who operate with professionalism. “As black men, we have the ability to do anything that we put our minds to,” he says.
Being a business manu can also be a humbling experience. “I am a firm believer of patience being a virtue, and I never want to bite off more than I can chew. My business is growing at a reasonable pace and I hope that will continue. Moving forward, I will continue to promote the business and strive to become better at my craft. In another year or so I would like to have a second truck and expand my services, and eventually get a tow yard to grow the business into long distance car transporting as well,” he says. h Hampton Roads - Sept./Oct. 2019

Timbrel Records “We Are The New Motown”
Clarinetist, Sharron
By Terry L. Watson - All Photos provided by Timbrel Records Founder and CEO/President William Arthur Upshaw III Timbrel Records was birthed upon God’s vision on October 30, 1990. During this time period, Grammy Award winning vocalist D’angelo had just release his album,“Brown Sugar”. This was during the time when Douglas L. Wilder was elected as the 66th and first African American Governor of the state of Virginia. The southeast coast of the United States is known for great musical talents, of whom have traveled to the west coast for record contract and deals. Timbrel Records founder and CEO, William Author Shaw shares how the term “Go West Young Man, Go West” prompted him to reachout to Governor Wilder and see what could be done to keep those talents on the east cost. As a result, this is how Timbrel Records became listed as the first multicultural major/independent, record and music publishing company from the southeast coast. HuamiMagazine.com Hampton Roads - Sept./Oct. 2019 34
Upshaw points out a few artist who put Timbrel Records, Inc./BMI on the map, globally. “We have signed national recording artist Clarinetist Sharron, Summer, Diva Maria, Guitartist Barry Tillman, Evangelist Darlene King, Gospel Rapper Thomas Bynum, dance choreographer Zachariah Davis, The Star Finesse, and many more,” he shares. Those artists listed have opened for major concert venues during their concert touring season. “Timbrel Records Ink” house studio band accompanies their signed artists. The band members include Jay Parker, Percussionist, Lead Rythum Artist Guitarist, Barry Tillman, Fred Franklin, Bass, Bernard Alston, and Melvin Hill. Upshaw is the Keyboardist, and Percell Ford is the Artist Keyboardist. There are a few others who are not listed. With everything there comes change and challenges. For Upshaw, he says throughout the years in the music industry, he has noticed the transition from (8 Track Tapes) to (Cassettes), and then to a (Compact Disc), and to the current popular (Flash Drive). The way music is distributed has changed also with a lot of it being streamed on line than is purchased at a retail store. “Concert and tour promoters sometimes develop a large overhead budget, but forget about compensation to the artist/band. Timbrel Records has established capital to compensate our artists and bands when necessary,” he says. Also, he points out how he feels how some music has lost its “flavor” over the years. “We have kept the flavor in our music and that helps to keep the status of Timbrel Records number one in the southeast.” Upshaw shares how Timbrel Records has enhanced the careers of many artists, songwriters, and music industry executives. He also points out how he feels very priviledged and honored to share the stage with other celebrity artists such as Frankie Beverly & Maze, Wayman Tisdale, Chuck Brown, Ledisi, Vicki Winans, Will Downing, Dorothy Norwood, Glenn Jones, Teena Marie, Anthony Hamilton, Yolanda Adams, Kurt Karr, Larry Graham & Central Station, Jasmine Sullivan, Chrissette Michelle, Letoya Luckett, Lisa Raye, Nia Long, Lou Gousett Jr., David Sanborn, Kymani Marley, Bella Dona. and many more. Upshaw says he has been inspired by the outpouring of love and support that Timbrel Records has received over the years. This includes their relationship with signed leading female artist and Clarinetist, Sharron, who is listed as one of the first prolific female Clarinetist upon the east coast. He is aso inspired by Huami Magazine. “During

Hampton Roads - Sept./Oct. 2019
By Terry L. Watson Photos by Trish Farrell Trish Bernard is the owner of Farrell’s Daughter Business Consulting & Graphic Design, in Dallas, TX. She describes herself as an innovative and energetic “girl boss” with a love for helping business owners and professionals streamline their processes. Her business was created to save busy professionals from work overload, by helping them to stay organized and provide them with cost-effective solutions. Originally from New Orleans, she currently resides in Dallas. Both of her parents were workaholics and it is understandable that she picked up their work ethics. As a sociology major and graduate from Texas Southern University, Trish truly loves people and she shares that she has a heart for servitude. “I have spent most of my life helping take the stress off of others and giving back to my community,” she says. Her business is rooted in the same qualities that make Trish who she is. Hard work. “After my dad passed in 2015, I decided to start my own business, which is also named after him. My father had a major impact on my life by teaching me the importance of servitude. Farrell’s Daughter offers virtual and local business services such as business consulting, project management, graphic design, and Wix and Squarespace web design for small business owners. “I believe no one can do it alone and I practice what I preach. I have an awesome virtual assistant who helps make sure I stay on track and my support team of sub-contractors and interns help to spare me the need of hiring a full staff,” she says. Farrell’s typical clients are female entrepreneurs. Trish says she finds this group often time takes on way too much. “I love solving problems and showing my clients that the impossible can be done with a bit of effort and trust. For the most part, I love under promising, and over delivering and give my clients more than they paid for. My specialty is reducing stress for my clients by taking tasks off of their plate. I consider myself a “Task Master.” One of the biggest hurdles for Trish in business is establishing trust with her clients. “They have a hard time letting go of control when it comes to their business, and I can relate to this because I also outsource when needed. However breaking down the trust barrier is tough for me but once it’s down, everything is smooth sailing from there,” she says.

Trish admits her journey to become an entrepreneur has been largely impacted by my father. “He was literally the nicest and hardest working person I’ve ever known, and I wanted to carry on that spirit after he passed. Equally important is the support of friends and family, including my sister Farrah whom is a secret investor in my business. Without her support I would have failed long ago,” says Trish. For others who are thinking about jumping into the world of entrepreneurship, Trish offers a bit of helpful advise. “First, please get some help and support, and don’t try to do it alone. If you can get a mentor or an accountability partner, do it as soon as possible. A remember that is value in your network. I have friends that have never bought a service, but constantly send me referrals,” she shares.
“I love solving problems and showing my clients that the impossible can be done with a bit of effort and trust.” Though her journey has been a little challenging at times, Trish says she has enjoyed the ride. “I have learned so much along the way and some of my negative experiences have actually made me money. For example, teaching entrepreneurs how to avoid my mistakes has been a key to my business and gives me more joy than the pain previously had caused,” she says. While the future seems to be very bright for Farrell’s Daughter Business Consulting & Graphic Design, Trish remains constant on her grind to make the business greater. “I plan to start a coaching service for entrepreneurs only. I want to teach them how to navigate their business, and the importance of taking time for their own sanity. I want to be an entrepreneurs personal cheerleader,” she says. Stay tuned! h
