WEAVES - SEW INS NATURAL HAIR COLORING & MORE By Alana Allen - Photo by Parade And Drill If you have been a frequent attendee at N.C. A&T’s Homecoming parade, it’s a guarantee that you have seen this group of youth performing over the years. The Parade and Drill Training Program has been around for more than 30 years based in the Greensboro community. It is a nonprofit that operates as a leadership, training and educational initiative that works to improve and reinforce youth services with a specific focus on disadvantaged children. Founded by Nicholas Bright, Anthony Goins, Dean and Dale Gibson, and directed by Bright, this program has trained, mentored and worked with 5,000 youth in North Carolina. The program is known for assisting children in controlling behavioral patterns through discipline, cultivated in military oriented principles.

Appointments & Walk Ins Available

Bright, a native of Little Washington, passion and commitment to starting a program like this derived from his military experience. He wanted to start an initiative that dealt with discipline, leadership and that allowed youth to have fun in a positive way. In the beginning, the program practiced daily in different cities such as Aurora, High Point, Washington, Sedalia, Thomasville, Danville, Va., Burlington, Reidsville and Elon. Currently, the program operates yearly and practices twice a week in Greensboro, and it also utilizes a tutoring program with the help of students from the N.C. A&T National Society of Perishing Angels, Inc. and the National Society of Perishing Rifles Company N-4. The organization recruits youth and teenagers between the ages of six to 18 years of age. Some of the techniques used in this program are step, military, riffle and fancy drills fused with the latest dance moves. The organization on average performs at 15 to 20 events a year at churches, state fairs, competitions, and mainly major parades in Greensboro, Burlington, Winston-Salem and South Carolina. The leadership of the organization consist of Lt. General Dean Gibson, chief commander; Colonel Dale Gibson, battalion and operations commander; Lt. Colonel Danyell Chandler, trainer and recruiter; Lt. Colonel Anthony Goins, alumni / reserve unit; Major Bobby Hamilton, company commander; Captain Kamyra Bennett, drill units commander; O.I.C. Andre Spinks, step team trainer and O.I.C. Shawn Johnson, step team trainer. The leadership of this strong standing organization ensures that each youth maintains good academic standing, leadership skills and spiritual awareness. Over the years, the team has seen many of their high school students join ROTC and after graduation enlist in the military and enroll in college. The program is definitely a family atmosphere that gives youth a sense of belonging and honestly discourages them from joining gangs. “There is a testimony with every child that comes into this program. This organization is a family atmosphere that supports academic success,” said Mr. Bright. “We have seen children come in with failing grades and finish their school year achieving success and operating in a leadership role.” The support system for this organization is the parents who are involved and the alumni who come back year after year to offer support. There are no dues to join; however fundraising is necessary to help with purchasing uniforms for each child. The team all agree, putting a youth in this program will teach them how to take charge in a situation, complete projects and build confidence and character. “It just works!” For more information about the Parade and Drill Training program, please visit them on Facebook at ParadeandDrill PAD. h

Achieving Goals And Dreams Through Purpose & Prosperity

October 22nd - 23rd By Terry L. Watson Photos By Rodney Brunson

The Brunson Invitational Golf Scholarship Fund was founded in 2000 by Rodney Brunson. The fund was created when Brunson witnessed the financial challenges college students face due to lack of resources and scholarship opportunities. He and other avid golf payers, who love the game decided to be the change they wanted to see in today’s world. The Brunson Invitational Golf Scholarship Fund’s mission is to positively impact the lives of inner-city youth through golf instruction, training and exposure. These enriching opportunities will help support youth thirst for knowledge and their desire to make a difference in the world. Typically, there are four events in three days, starting with the annual youth golf clinic that brings out an average of 15-20 children from ages seven to 16. There are two to three golf instructors that offer golf instruction for about an hour. The instructors go over putting, chipping and full swing. The kids receive a gift bag and dinner that is provided by event sponsors. In addition, there is a “meet and greet” social that is open for alumni and golfers. “As former athletes and students, we understood the challenges these students go through. We have also inspired other golf peers and classmates to have a golf tournament during North Carolina A&T State University’s Homecoming weekend. The golf event has existed since 2000; however we initially started giving away scholarships in 2007. And every year since 2007, we have expanded that weekend to more events and activities that have benefited not only scholarships but exposing the game to our youth,” says Brunson. The Brunson Invitational Scholarship Fund is also a registered nonprofit organization that exposes inner city youth to the game of golf. College students that apply to this scholarship must meet academic guidelines and attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Rodney Brunson, founder and executive director graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1990. He is a former student and athlete (football player from 19861990). In addition, he has been playing golf since 1996. For more information, please call 336-457-2372 for details about the program and how to support the scholarship fund. h

Mount Zion Baptist Church Youth and Children’s Ministry

M

By Tonya Dixon Photos by Still Shots Photography inistering to children and youth is no easy task on any level. The degree of patience, love and endurance required is significant to say the least. Young people are easily distracted in a world that constantly places more value on material things and devalues the necessity of Christian, spiritual growth. However, Mount. Zion Baptist Church of Greensboro, Inc. is even more determined to equip them with a solid foundation of Godly principles as well as empower them to physical, mental and emotional wholeness. To say that Mt. Zion is committed to youth and children is an understatement. The manner in which the church operates concerning ministry for them is intensely intentional, strategic and purposeful.

Imagine Kingdom, the children’s ministry, and Youth Blaze, the youth ministry, recently underwent a complete restructure from new intuitive curriculums to interactive facilities. It’s different. It’s new. It’s not church as usual and it’s making a massive impact. Imagine Kingdom includes a nursery, preschool, pre-k and elementary through fifth grade, while Youth Blaze is for sixth through 12th grade. Everything done, said or even displayed is done with the intention of producing spiritually empowered children and youth. T he level of communication and technology utilized is nothing short of amazing. Both Imagine Kingdom and Youth Blaze have separate, updated facilities, which include a new, secure check-in system, worship areas with televisions, LED lights and video walls as well as arcade rooms with all the games and systems that kids have come to know and love.

Continued from previous page Nevertheless, the word of God and lessons that previous generations learned is still being taught, however Mount Zion has honed in and discovered the importance of varying the method to match the distinct member. In other words, today’s youth are technology sure and savvy, therefore the method used to minister to them should be as well. According to Mount Zion Youth Pastor Deon Clark, every aspect of the children and youth ministry has a purpose and nothing is done haphazardly. “We are very intentional. Senior Pastor Bryan Pierce has a vision for our children and youth to experience worship in a manner that is just as intense as the adults, but just on their level,” says Clark. “We started [our restructure] with our younger children first because it’s just like anything else, whether it’s sports or discipline, the Bible says train up a child in the way he should go and I also like to say in the way he should grow. Each child or youth is trained for the next level in ministry so that when they get to the next level they‘ll know what to do because they have already experienced worship on some level.” “Our kids are on fire for God because they don’t know any better. They worship without having to be told,” he adds. Participants in Imagine Kingdom are spiritually fed through The Gospel Project for Kids curriculum by Lifeway. Parents are even able to follow their child’s progression. While Youth Blaze members don’t follow a specified curriculum they are being given the same instruction and wisdom that their parents receive every Sunday, just on their level of understanding. Youth Blaze is broken down into two sub-groups; middle school called, iSpark and high school called iIgnite. “We believe middle schoolers are the sparks that will ignite the blaze and high schoolers, once they have been sparked, will be the ignition to keep it going,” Clark says. With weekly and monthly series such as: “YouTube, What are you Broadcasting?” and “Straight Outta Christ” (adapted from the Straight Outta Compton motion picture) Pastor Pierce, Pastor Clark and all the ministry leaders including the awesome, and vitally important Youth Ministry Advisory Council, are able to grab the attention of a group of people who are fiercely difficult to attract and retain. “We have fun, we do giveaways. We may even give out gift cards. Nothing is ever the same because if you keep doing the same thing with youth they get bored and we want them to know there isn’t anything boring about a life in Christ,” Clark says. “Sometimes youth and children will not learn if we continue doing it the way we did it 15-20 years ago. We are very transparent [with them] and aware of where we are. Youth ministry can’t be done the same. Youth ministry evolves every three to five years and that’s what we try to do.” The effort and sacrifices Mount Zion makes for children and youth ministry and to impact this generation requires countless, passion-filled volunteers, who are the heart and soul of the ministry. They give of their time and expend their energy because they believe in the cause. The church makes no excuses or apologies for investing in their children and youth. Moreover, the influence is not just relegated to the physical church. It goes beyond the four walls. It reaches the community in big ways. Pastor Pierce stands on the notion that he who serves the city, wins the city. “We are simply applying and expanding our pastor’s vision. We believe it’s not enough to do church on Wednesday and Sundays, but we want to impact them in other areas,” Clark says. “We’re not just doing church, but we’re bringing church to the people and the community.

10 10

The ministry recently teamed up with Guilford County Schools and served over 5,000 children and parents giving out backpacks, food, haircuts and numerous other services and offering countless resources, including parent workshops, which are offered on a continual basis at the church, such as how to help their children with end of grade testing and even parent and child relationship classes. It’s all done with an effort to make sure the children succeed and the parents are equipped to assist them.

Pastor Bryan J. Pierce

While Pastor Clark invests a great deal of his time and energy into spiritually guiding the youth at the church, he also makes sure he’s available for home or school visits for any child that may be struggling or even as a show of support in the event of a child having a court case. “We are very passionate because every single student from age 0-18 matters to this youth ministry, just like every adult matters to our senior pastor,” Clark says. He reiterates that Mount Zion has always seen the value and worth of advocating for children and youth with exceptionalism and pride, but opportunities for growth will never be extinguished. The only way the ministry has been able to expand is because of God leading, guiding, directing and giving vision to leadership and leadership in turn being obedient to the voice of the Lord. There’s room for greater work to be done and Mount Zion is determined to use every resource the Lord makes available to do its part in winning youth for the Kingdom of God. Pastor Clark is supported by his wife Jennifer and kids Noah, Nilah and Nolan. Pastor Bryan J. Pierce says the vision for Mount Zion’s youth ministy has to do with developing and sustaining a youth ministry of excellece. “It’s in three parts. We wanted to get a great discipleship resource. We also wanted to find volunteers who would meet the criteria as it relates to teaching with the spirit of excellence, as it relates to our young people. We also wanted to make disciples. Finally, we wanted to transform the childrens church into a more condusive 21st century - state of the art - worhip center for our children. They have all of the modern technology tools that will help them advance the kingdom of God. We are happy to see that vision come along. God has graced us and we have made great strides,” he says. “We are very proud to have Pastor Clark lead our youth. He knows how to lead and reach the youth where they are. He has a creativity to know the things that will keep their minds and hearts towards God. Our children are our youth of today, and not just tomorrow and we are very grateful that God has given them to us.” h

The countless hours and effort that they put in, along with monthly training does not go unnoticed. Arisha Mceachirn

“I have always had a passion for working with youth. I feel that they are our future so I want to do what I can to help influence them in a positive manner so that they will grow into respectful, caring, productive members of society. I think that Pastor Clark relates well to the youth. He listens to their issues and concerns and makes sure that the proper actions are taken to address them. That goes a long way for youth who sometimes may feel that adults don’t understand or listen to them. Pastor Clark is able to build a rapport with the youth. He is very passionate about the youth ministry and devotes countless hours to ensuring that their needs are met and that they are growing in Christ all while keeping it interesting and fun for them.”

Tamara Dix

The students are honest about their feelings, their struggles and they keep you studying to answer all their questions about God, Christ and the Word in general. When their faces light up with understanding, nothing in the world beats that! They just want to know you care and that you’re listening. They want reasons to believe. I have been in youth ministry for 10 years, with four different youth pastors. Pastor Clark has gone further for more of the students than any youth pastor I have ever seen. He’s worked to reconcile rebellious children to their parents; he’s innovative and wants nothing but the best for Youth BLAZE and IK. He defends the students in their classrooms, supports their activities and encourages them to always be their best selves. He teaches them balance and has a way of relating to the students that many parents and adults miss.

Tonya Young

I am blessed by knowing the the impact Pastor Clark has on the future generations and seeing the impact on the growth of the kingdom. After all isn’t that why we were created? What better way than to teach those that will one day rule the world. Its not hard to see the influence he has if you spend a few moments with him and the students that the students trust and respect him and what he pours into them on a daily basis. Pastor Clark heart and passion for everyone he comes in contact with is to see them happy and walking in their own passion. He loves to help the people. He treats each youth he comes in comes in contact with as though they were his own child. He is a wonderful father, mentor and example to his own three children as well as the hundreds that he sees week after week. There isn’t a situation that he will not throw himself completely into to see a youth or adult fully succeed. He is a father, husband and Pastor who has the heart and passion for Christ, putting his own self and needs second to those of others. It is an honor and pleasure to serve with him.

Pattie Elwood What do I like most about working in youth ministry? The children...it’s all about the children. They are our future and I enjoy not only working with them but also learning from them. I love them dearly. Children know when you are sincere. Pastor Clark has built a level of trust with the students where they feel comfortable asking questions and even acting silly with him from time to time. They trust what he says because he has shown himself faithful to his purpose. Pastor Clark should be the spokesperson for “No Child Left Behind”. His passion, his heart...it’s real. From late nights to early mornings he works for the youth nonstop. Who knows of a Pastor that actually goes to each graduation of the students that invited him? Who knows of a Pastor who will come to your school and eat lunch with you and attend your extracurricular activities to support you? Pastor Clark doesn’t cut corners because they are kids.

Building and Branding a Beauty Empire

I

By Tonya D. Dixon Photos by Perfect Lenz Photography n under only four years Tamia McCray has established her brand as one of quality, professionalism and exceptionalism. The celebrity stylists’ flagship salon, Weave Doctors, has quickly gained a reputation of the best place to go for all hair services with special attention and expertise to weave, as well as all things healthy hair, not to mention excellent customer care.

When McCray hears people tell her how much they enjoy coming to her salon or how they appreciate the relaxed, dramafree environment she is immensely appreciative, but it doesn’t surprise her. No, she’s not arrogant; she just recognizes that her vision and her ideology are coming together and lining up, and it’s a beautiful thing. McCray pushes herself to the brink daily, cultivating her brand and making sure that it represents her well. Her success indicates that it does. In fact, it’s doing so well that she recently opened a second salon in Greenville, N.C., which is already booming and thriving. It’s just a testament to the power of a good brand. “My brand is all about precision. I’m proud to say that I trained each of my stylists personally. A lot of salon owners don’t want their stylists to be better than them, but the way my salons are set up I concentrate on my brand,” McCray says. “People are coming for my brand. They may say for example, ‘okay, I can’t get Tamia, but I can go to KiKi and I know she will slay me.’ I pride myself on my brand, it’s so strong that if anyone comes into my salon they know they will get great, top-notch service. Plus all of my stylists are great. I couldn’t operate without them. KiKi, for example has been with me for over three years and has helped me expand and build the brand.” While McCray offers her own hair line, True Life Virgin Hair, which includes all hair types and textures – for quite some time, she and her team recently added custom wig making to their list of services. The units are available for anyone, but McCray is especially excited to be able to help cancer patients and survivors or individuals suffering from diseases and disorders such as alopecia have been forced to settle for something from a beauty supply store that they don’t love and barely like. Clients interested in the custom wigs are given the opportunity for a free consultation in a private room. The units can be custom cut and colored using any style or texture of hair and for the remainder of the year the units will be on sale. Branding and development is extremely important, but McCray also believes that giving back and helping others is just as important, if not more so. Which is why she continues to give back to the community; whether it’s giving away turkeys during the Weave Doctors’ annual Thanksgiving turkey drive or sponsoring families during Christmas, or even offering free hair care services, it’s a part of not only McCray’s nature, but it has become a part of the Weave Doctor culture.

Doing it my way My brand is all about precision. I’m proud to say that I trained each of my stylists personally. A lot of salon owners don’t want their stylists to be better than them, but the way my salons are set up I concentrate on my brand,” Tamia McCray

There have been times in my life I have needed someone to help me so it doesnt bother me to give away free services Tamia McCray

“I have always given back to the community, not for advertising purposes, but it’s always something I’ve wanted to do. I’m a delta as well so I’m rooted in civic activity,” she says. “There have been times in my life I have needed someone to help me so it doesn’t bother me to give away free services. If someone is about to go to a job interview or even if someone simply can’t afford my services I tell people just ask me. If I feel you are genuine and need something to help your self-esteem or anything else, I’m willing to help.” “I’ve had people call me dealing with suicidal ideations and other issues and because I have my master’s degree in counseling I’m able to help. I might just simply take them out of their environment for the day.” It’s apparent that McCray loves what she does and doesn’t mind helping others with the gift she has been given. It’s the only explanation for why she does the things she does. It’s her love for her craft that compels her to even teach and mentor others that may very well become her competition. True entrepreneurs are able to help others obtain success without their own being threatened. The giver in McCray desires to help and assist wherever and whenever possible, but with the opening of her Greenville location and countless other obligations, she simply can’t fully devote the time and attention that being a committed mentor would require. However, she’s “Mrs. Make-itHappen” and where there’s a will, there’s always a way. On September 20, McCray will be teaming up with celebrity stylist, Tokyo Stylz and other A-list stylists for a symposium and Q&A. “Other stylists and students are always asking me to mentor them, but I can’t give them the attention they need. This will be an opportunity for them to sit down with real celebrity stylists and pick our brains, mingle and network,” she says. Additionally, new ideas, concepts, techniques and trends will be on display that many area stylists may not yet be aware of.

Clients value the great services that Weave Doctors offers. While several discount weave salons and shops have opened in the area in the last three years, she says they have all closed. Why? Because McCray has come to understand that quality stands the test of time and Weave Doctors is still standing. Opening additional salons, offering custom services and products, boasting a massive social media following, the knowledge of knowing she owns one of very few top-notch salons in the area and even acquiring her bail bondsmen license (a feat she has always wanted to accomplish) still doesn’t complete the puzzle for McCray. The next step is to see the doors opened at Head Doctors, a full service barber shop and tattoo parlor. By the beginning of next year, it will definitely be open and McCray will most assuredly be working on her next venture expanding her brand and building her empire. h

When Women Become

By Reketta Wright Photos by Mykel Media Company t would be safe to assume that everyone goes through some form of depression at one time or another in their life. Periods of sadness and hopelessness are very common as life is often challenging and unpredictable. However, what must be understood is that depression can quickly turn into a serious condition that can largely affect your social life, relationships, career, and sense of self-worth and purpose.

Depression is not a “one size fits all”. It may not look the same on one of your closest girlfriends as it does on your sister. Feelings of sadness and emptiness can overtake one’s life while your friend maybe experiencing overeating, thoughts of suicide, anxiety, and irritability. She’s aching, experiencing headaches, pain, and doesn’t even know where it’s coming from. Oh yeah that’s depression, all of a sudden she’s loss interest in her favorite activities, feeling very tired, and not able to concentrate or remember special events or important dates. So, what’s happening? Depression has struck, but don’t worry it’s highly treatable through various means that might include therapy, lifestyle changes such as exercising daily, avoiding the urge to isolate, and carving out time for rest and relaxation, or medications. Feeling better takes time, but you can get there if you make positive choices for yourself each day and draw on the support of others. Once you start feeling better make a commitment to yourself to stay emotionally healthy in your mind, body, and spirit. You deserve it! · American Opportunity Tax Credit. The AOTC is worth up to $2,500 per year for an eligible student. You may claim this credit only for the first four years of higher education. Forty percent of the AOTC is refundable. That means if you are eligible, you can get up to $1,000 of the credit as a refund, even if you do not owe any taxes.

Dont’ Wait Until October

· Lifetime Learning Credit. The LLC is worth up to $2,000 on your tax return. There is no limit on the number of years that you can claim the LLC for an eligible student. · One credit per student. You can’t take more than one education benefit for the same student and the same expenses. In other words, you can’t take the AOTC or LLC for the same student in the same tax year. Also, if the student receives tax-free educational assistance, such as a grant, you need to subject that amount from the qualified education expenses. · Qualified expenses. You may use qualified expenses to figure your credit. These include the costs you pay for tuition, fees and other related expenses for an eligible student. If you’re not sure what qualified expenses you can talk with a tax professional. · Form 1098-T. In most cases, you should receive Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, from your school by Feb. 1, 2016. This form reports your qualified expenses to the IRS and to you. The amounts shown on the form may be different than the amounts you actually paid. That might happen because some of your related costs may not appear on the form. For instance, the cost of your textbooks may not appear on the form. However, you still may be able to include those costs when you figure your credit. Don’t forget that you can only claim an education credit for the qualified expenses that you paid in that same tax year.

· Income limits. These credits are subject to income limitations and may be reduced or eliminated, based on your income. h

By Mary Ann Adams Photos by Mykel Media Company, LLC ctober 15, 2015, is the last day to file your 2014 tax returns for most individuals who requested an automatic six-month extension. However, you can file any time before Oct. 15, if you have all your required tax documents. As you prepare to file your 2014 tax return, there are some things that you should keep in mind:

How Health Care Laws could affect your taxes. The Affordable Care Act requires you, your spouse, and your dependents to have qualifying health insurance for the entire year, report a health coverage exemption, or make a payment when you file. If you purchased coverage through the marketplace, you may be eligible for the premium tax credit and need to use Form 8962 to reconcile any advance payments made on your behalf. If you do not file a 2014 tax return you will not be eligible for advance payments or cost-sharing reductions to help pay for your marketplace health insurance coverage in 2016. Filing as soon as possible, using your most current Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, will substantially increase your chances of avoiding a gap in receiving this help.

If you aren’t ready to file yet, remember to file by Oct. 15, to avoid a late filing penalty. If you owe and can’t pay all of your taxes, pay as much as you can to reduce interest and penalties for late payment. In most cases, the failure-to-file penalty is 10 times more than the failure-to-pay penalty.

This includes members of the military and others serving in a combat zone. If this applies to you, you typically have until at least 180 days after you leave the combat zone to both file returns and pay any taxes due. Back-to-School Education Tax Credits With school starting, if you, your spouse or a dependent are enrolled in college this fall, you may be able to claim a tax credit on your federal tax return. Kenneth J. Harper Asks:

What Are You

Doing? By Kenneth Harper Photos by Howard Gaither

W

ake up! Many in the AfricanAmerican community do not realize they embody a free democratic capitalistic society. They have not grasped their own cognitive power of the benefits of a free enterprise system. Therefore, many remain only consumer-focused. Others throughout the African-American community remain adverse towards risk and investment. This is sad because there are missed opportunities that will be loss because time, nor compound interest stops for no one. Individuals engaging in this poor behavior; poor meaning (passing over opportunities repeatedly) fail to comprehend the power of financial literacy. Moreover, this slumber will have long-term effects on their quality of life and the lives of those who depend on them. In Proverbs 1:5 AMP it reads, “The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel [so that he may be able to steer his course rightly]”. In his book “50 Economics Ideas You Really Need to Know” Edmund Conway describes capitalism as a mongrel system. Capitalism is the system where capital (the companies, equipment and structures used for producing goods and services) is owned not by the state but by private individuals. This means it is the public who owns companies- taking stakes in them by buying shares, or lending them money in exchange for bonds.

“By fostering relationships with financial advisors, CPA’s and accountants, and attorneys you can create your own will and trust to protect everything you own. Also, it’s always ideal to learn concepts and strategies that minimize your tax burden”. Kenneth Harper

Interestingly, the author, Conway further delves into the evolution of capitalism by exposing how the Europeans discovered lucrative resources in the Americas. It brought extreme wealth to the operators of these routes, and for the first time in history, ordinary people started making money in their own right, rather than relying on the patronage of a rich monarch or aristocrat. Moreover, he fails to mention however the accumulation of this great wealth was built by the blood, sweat and tears of millions of slaves, brought to America against their will. It would still be hundreds of years before African-Americans would engage freely in capitalism or wealth accumulation. I call this the financial literary gap of time, especially for people of color. That time gap has been and still is costly to our community because today we now have access to all the instruments needed to build wealth. However, many are focused more on TV shows like, “Love & Hip Hop” and “Empire”, trying to live that type of lifestyle than building a legacy for the long-term.

Today, we can say that many have achieved the latter. However, there is a long-haul yet to come if we are going to begin to close the wealth gap in America. This is no small feat, for some of the same reasons that many have tried hundreds of years ago. Many did not want African- Americans to gain financial independence. This is why it is imperative to wake up to the opportunities of business development, creating jobs by becoming entrepreneurs, investing in your 401k, owning stocks, mutual funds, annuities, and life insurance. By fostering relationships with financial advisors, CPA’s and accountants, and attorneys you can create your own will and trust to protect everything you own. Also, it’s always ideal to learn concepts and strategies that minimize your tax burden. Many of these options mentioned are combined with features such as tax-deferred growth, compounded interest, and some provide a tax-free option during retirement. h

Those hundreds of years denied African-Americans the rights to work for the gain of wealth, build businesses we owned, invest and participate in free markets, because we were captive. It also forged a lack of transparency needed to understand how to engage in capitalism. So instead of wealth transfer for the next generation, African-Americans experienced the transfer of disparity and lack of knowledge, and fewer assets that would be given to the next generation. Two components that harness the power of sustainability are “quality of life” and “capital.” This transfer has helped in creating a wealth gap of inequality. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., fierce struggle for African-Americans would finally yield the Civil Rights Act in 1964. The bill was signed by President Lyndon B Johnson, a landmark piece of civil rights legislation. This bill of rights still was not enough for many of the movement. The SCLC leadership in 1968 drafted a letter demanding “an economic and social bill of Rights”, that would promise all citizens the right to a job, the right to an adequate education, and the right to a decent house among others.

Self Improvement

Where Did All Of My Time Go? By Demetra Moore Photo by Demetra Moore

H

ave you heard of the ‘80:20 rule’? Not the one from that Tyler Perry movie; the Pareto Principle which states that 80 percent of efforts that are not managed generate only 20 percent of the desired output.

When most of us think about time management, we picture lists, appointment books, and extensive planning. However, time management is simpler than that; it’s about being focused. Scheduling, goal setting, thorough planning, and prioritizing are the core basics of time management. While these basics sounds very complicated, time management is fairly easy and worth the effort. Having a balanced lifestyle is the key result in having personal time management. It is about getting results, not about being busy. The six areas that personal time management seeks to improve in anyone’s life are physical, intellectual, social, career, emotional and spiritual. The physical aspect involves having a healthy body, less stress and fatigue. The intellectual aspect involves learning and other mental growth activities. The social aspect involves developing personal or intimate relations and being an active contributor to society. The career aspect involves work and professional development. The emotional aspect involves appropriate feelings and desires, and manifesting them. The spiritual aspect involves a personal quest for meaning. Thoroughly planning and having a set of things to do list for each of the key areas may not be very practical, but determining which area in your life is not being giving enough attention is part of time management. Each area creates the whole you, if you are ignoring one area then you are ignoring an important part of yourself.

Demetra Moore is a certified professional career coach and the founder of Moore Out of Life, Inc Here’s three ways to incorporate time management basics into your personal and professional life: 1. Review your goals whether it be immediate or long-term goals 2. Learn to say “no”. Heed it even if it involves saying the word to family or friends 3. Have a record or journal of all your activities. Dr. Helmsetter said, “I believe that mastering one’s future must surely start with managing one’s self. And if we could accomplish that we could manage and master at least a part of what we call life.” The moment you integrate time management skills as part of your daily routine more opportunities will become apparent. If you would like additional details on time management enroll in my Personal Mastery Seminar. This seminar will allow you to effectively balance the six key areas in your life. h

Pastor Ronald & Rachel Wilson 101 Things Your Barber/Stylist Hates (But May Never Tell You) is a book of humorous tales inspired by real life experiences of author and barber, Ronald Wilson. The book is about 101 things customers carry out in the barbershops and salons that they may not be aware of that is weighing on the patience of their barber/stylist. Barbers and stylists are responsible for making the world look good. With this being the case, you don’t want to do anything to add stress to their life on your next visit – they are people too. However, the only problem is, the general public doesn’t think so at times. This book was written to guide every customer on a personal, virtual tour through the minds of barbers and hairstylists across the globe. From North Carolina to the coasts of sunny California, barbers and stylists are often blamed for everything under the sun pertaining to cutting and styling the hair of the American people. Things such as pushing a customer’s hair line back, missing appointments that were not made, drying out a customer’s scalp, giving someone’s child a ringworm, making someone’s hair fall or thin out, even down to “you are the reason I’m bald!” And the list goes on… Ronald Wilson wrote the book to vent for the barber/stylist, as well as to educate the customer of their day–to-day oblivious behavior while at the shop. Behaviors such as “the silent parent”, “the non-tipper”, “the mirror watcher”, “the customer that’s always late”, “the shop hopper”, “the grease head”, and “the picky one”. Out of the 101 things, it’s a guarantee most people will find themselves somewhere on the list. There are numerous testimonies from barbers/ stylists of customers changing their behavior as a result of reading the book. Also, the book merges the barber/stylist and the customer in lots of laughter and healing. 101 Things Your Barber/Stylist Hates (But May Never Tell You) has been placed into the hands of many celebrity master barbers, such as Sipp “The Surgeon”, Curtis Smith, James Mack “Original” Barber, Angel Raws, and Darrin “DL Master Barber” Lyons. Also, the book was presented and showcased during the MegaFest Hair Battle 2015 in Dallas sponsored by Bishop TD Jakes and Sipp “The Surgeon.”

“Barbers and Hairstylists are people too. The only problem is the general public doesn’t think so at times. This book was written to guide every customer on a personal, virtual tour through the head of barbers and hairstylists across the globe.” Pastor Ronald Wilson

Ronald Wilson was born in Wilmington, N.C. He and his wife Rachel were called into the ministry and ordained pastors by the late Bishop John W. Barber in 1998. Wilson is the author of The Dream Team, an inspiring writing concerning those whom God chooses to walk with you while on your road to destiny. The Dream Team was blessed to receive a foreword by Bishop Michael A. Blue, author of Building Credibility in Leadership and founding Pastor of The Door of Hope Christian Church in Marion, S.C. He and his wife Rachel are both licensed life coaches with credentials from Saint Thomas Christian University in Jacksonville, Fla. Wilson and his wife, Rachel both received their honorary doctorate degrees from Saint Thomas as well. They are currently the Senior Pastors of Kingdom Vision Life Center in Greensboro, N.C. h To order your copy of 101 Things Your Barber/Stylist Hates (But May Never Tell You), go to www.westbowpress.com, or visit Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Books a Million online bookstores. PHIPPS Outreach Ministries

“A Church Without Walls” By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company

T

aking It To The Streets Outreach Ministries, Inc. is a nonprofit ministry organization whose sole purpose is taking the love of Christ to the streets and spreading the gospel, in order to reach a lost and dying world. It was founded by Reverend Randall L. Phipps, a Greensboro, N.C. native, who describes himself as a “just keeping it real kind of guy”, whether in ministry, work or at leisure. His journey to the pulpit was not a simple one. In fact, one could say he’s been to hell and back and lived to tell about it. This God-inspired vision began as a seed planted in Phipps heart and spirit nearly seven years ago. God revealed to him the need for a ministry within the streets that is focused on the people who are less fortunate, often forgotten, and even feared. The seed lay dormant until January 1, 2015, and has been going strong ever since. Phipps says that it is only by the grace and mercy of God that he is alive today. “It was by His power that my life was transformed. Now I live to bring God glory. I’ve had guns drawn to my head, I almost committed suicide and I have walked the streets of Greensboro with nowhere to live and eaten out of garbage cans. Addiction had gripped my life for 20 years...but God,” he confesses. Until his mother returned into his life, he was primarily raised by his grandparents in a Christian home; Phipps says his grandfather became his role model, teacher and inspiration. Yet, he tested the limits and succumbed to a life filled with destructive decisions and behavior. He started smoking at the age of 14. By the time he was 16, he was drinking every day, attempting to drown away inner pain. “My life began to spiral out of control. By the time I was 18, I was doing cocaine,” says Phipps. He moved from using to dealing, while along the way he had caused his family to distance themselves from

30

him. However, Phipps says he had a praying mother and grandmother who never gave up on him. Finally, after 10 arrests for numerous counts ranging from drug possession to assault, to burglary and worthless checks, he knew he had hit rock bottom. After a dozen attempts to get his life together through several rehabs, Phipps entered into rehab at Greensboro based Malachi House, where he found help, healing and hope. He began the long journey of recovery from all his hurts, habits and hang ups. “I experienced the forgiveness of God and began training in ministry and forged a relationship with Jesus Christ,” he says. The road to recovery was not always easy. There were slips and falls along the way, but he gathered an understanding that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). “When we fall, we get back up again. We serve a God of another chance, not just a second chance,” says Phipps. “For a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again” (Proverbs 24:16). He fell more than seven times, but says God was truly merciful and patient with him.

“When we fall, we get back up again. We serve a God of another chance, not just a second chance. ‘For a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again’ (Proverbs 24:16).” Reverend Randall Phipps Having been stripped of everything and homeless for a second time, he met Pastor Jeremiah Cole of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Newsoms, VA. It was there that he accepted his calling to ministry and was licensed to preach the gospel in 2009. He served as an associate minister until he returned to Greensboro. Phipps says he is just the vessel and agent for the Lord. He is just trying to share the love of Christ to anybody who will receive it. He has made it his life’s mission to go back and give back. “I understand the needs and the plight of life out there in the streets. I’ve had opportunities to work for the same Christcentered recovery program that helped me and that is exactly what I want to return to others who may have fallen into similar situations,” he says. h

ammie Hinnant-Hagans doesn’t consider herself to be a bodybuilder. Instead she says she is only building muscle to make her physique look as good as it can in a bikini, on and off stage. By trade she is a licensed nurse and personal trainer, but has most recently added NPC amateur athlete to her resume.

She started competing in 2014 at the ripe age of 43. It wasn’t long before she was capturing the interest and attention of others and making noise of her very own. “Every time I hit the stage, I’ve gotten better with each showing. I’m proud of myself when I see areas of improvement from the hard work and determination I bring to each show,” she says. Her new found interest in body sculpting is quite understandable. Hagans says she loves people and helping them maintain optimal health; whether it be administering medications or giving advice on diet and exercise. She is also a member of the Bombshell Fitness organization. Her biggest challenge is getting up before sunrise. “It’s not going to happen,” she emphatically says. “Fact being I work second shift as a nurse and regularly work pass my shift, I usually get home when most are sleeping, including my husband, so my mornings start at 7:00 a.m. Not the best time, but it works for me”. Her husband and IFBB PRO Martinez Hagans has impacted her the most, understandably in terms in health and fitness. She says that he has stood beside her through the good, bad and ugly. “I know that as long as he is here on this earth, he will support and love me unconditionally as he’s done for the last 20 years. I have many titles, but my favorite one is being his wife. Without him I wouldn’t be in Greensboro N.C., a nurse or be bikini competitor. He is my all,” she says. h

We’re Going to Paint the City Purple The Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, Inc., a local non-profit that has helped to prevent and spread awareness of domestic abuse has accomplished its mission! On June 26, 2008, Portia Shipman founded The Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, Inc. (SDJF) along with her twin daughters, Terri Johnson and Torri Johnson (www.sdjfnc.org) in the memory of their dear friend, Sherri Denese Jackson. For the past seven years, the foundation located on the eastside of Greensboro, has helped to empower women, support the families of loss loved ones, honor survivors, promote awareness and education through community outreach in an effort to help victims of domestic abuse reclaim their lives by breaking free from domestic violence. Sherri was a beautiful young woman who found herself a victim of domestic violence with seemingly nowhere to go for help. She was too embarrassed about being with an abusive boyfriend, DeCarlo Bennett, and too ashamed to ask for help, she attempted to leave on her own. In late 2006, she filed for an order of protection against Bennett. Decarlo then began stalking her and ultimately took her life. For 19 months, her body remained hidden until Bennett was summoned to disclose its location as part of a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office. On June 26, 2008, at about 1:30 p.m., Bennett led authorities to Sherri’s remains in the backyard of his mother’s home. She was only 27 years old at the time when her life was unfairly and brutally cut short. On July 7, 2008, Sherri’s body was finally put to rest in her hometown of Morganton, N.C. Bennett was convicted of second degree murder and was sentenced to only 13 years in prison. “It’s a dream come true! For many years we’ve waited for the day that the city of Greensboro would become more instrumental in domestic violence awareness and prevention. With the establishment of the Cone Health Forensic Nurse Domestic Violence program, the Greensboro Police Department Family Violence Unit and now the new Guilford County Family Justice Center, we are truly overjoyed!” said Founder and Executive Director, Portia Shipman. “It’s been our mission to prevent and stop domestic violence by offering preventative tools and by bringing awareness to the community on a state and local level… and we’ve done just that!” The founders are pleased to see the opening of the Guilford County Family Justice Center (FJC), located at 201 Greene Street, Greensboro, N.C. 27401. The Guilford County FJC is a single point of access to services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and neglect, and elder abuse. Under one roof, more than 17 agencies have come together to provide consolidated and coordinated legal, social, and health services to families in need of help (http://www.myguilford.com/family-justice-center). h The foundation will host the, Paint the City Purple, celebration sponsored by the Woodruff Family Law Group for all of Greensboro to show their support of domestic violence awareness. This event is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2015, at the Downtown Greensboro Public Library from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The foundation believes that to display purple throughout the community expresses a strong message that there is no place for domestic violence in our community’s homes, neighborhoods, schools or workplaces. This event will feature speakers from community leaders to survivors, food, live music, exhibit, and plenty of fun events for all ages.

The Celebration Begins November 7th, 2015
