I Am A Queen’s “Power of I Am” Teen Empowerment Conference By Asia Piper Queen, who do you aspire to be? Do you see yourself one day being a future CEO, app developer, doctor or choreographer? If so, I Am A Queen encourages you to follow your dreams and is here in this community to give you the proper tools to make your dreams happen. With the world constantly changing, and women stepping up in leadership roles, it’s imperative that we teach young girls the importance of pursuing higher education. The very first step to accomplishing goals is through education and empowering the mind. There are some stereotypes that believe young women usually are not skilled enough or are not interested in math or science, which is why girls make up a small percentage of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs. According to research, women are more likely to go in to careers that focus on art and dance; women make up 30 percent of entrepreneur businesses in the U.S., and thirty percent of major technology companies. However, I Am A Queen, a women’s empowerment nonprofit believes differently and is going to break barriers this summer with its annual teen empowerment conference that will expose girls to various career opportunities that will give them hands on experience. The organization’s mission is to uphold women in a high standard in their community. To educate and provide services that can change lives and to always be a blessing to others by providing charitable deeds. On Saturday, July 16, 2016, I Am A Queen will host the 4th annual “Power of I Am” Teen Empowerment Conference at the Power Play Center, located at 2207-A East Cone Blvd., Greensboro, N.C. The event is free for teen girls ages 10-18. The conference will include core programs on self-worth, the dangers of social media, bullying and branding. The conference will also have breakout sessions on entrepreneurship, technology, African dance and art. The primary goal of the conference is to spark a girl’s imagination in believing in their selves and their dreams of one day becoming future business leaders, presidents and powerhouses in their communities. For more information about becoming a sponsor of I Am A Queen’s “Power of I Am” Teen Empowerment Conference or more information about registering a teen girl, please go to www.iamaqueen.org h Triad - May/June - 2016

Tanika Growth Without A Ceiling T
By Keyanda Thompson - Photos by Jasmine Kerr / A.C.I.D Photography hankful, humble, and loyal. Those were the words that Tanika Harris described as her feelings when walking into her child care center each morning, three years ago. Those same feelings are true this day except she has decided to add faithful. Much has changed in three years but Tanika’s faith has not and it has helped her overcome what seemed to be tumultuous circumstances. “The past two years have been quite challenging but the lessons I have learned I will value for years to come,” she says.
In 2011, Educational Playtime Too! Inc. moved into its current facility on St. Leo’s Street with very few children and high hopes for growth. The growth came but, along with the blessings came obstacles. In 2014 the building she currently is leasing was put on the market for sale. The reality of having to purchase was exciting and intense. She always dreamed of purchasing the facility but being forced was not how she thought she would acquire this great asset. Plans began to be put in place. Tanika says “I could not fathom not being able to service the families whom supported me for the past 11 years.” As to not startle her parents, she began to face this situation head on, alone. Many turned her down and called her a “risk.” A successful black woman trying to better the black community was considered a risk she questioned. She tried various avenues to begin the purchasing process to keep the facility in place.

When the sky seemed to be cloudy and no light could be seen at the end of the tunnel, Tanika took a risk herself and asked for the help of others. She reached out to a couple of the parents within the facility, friends, and family whom she thought would help her keep EPToo! doors open. “Over this two year journey I have lost some friends, I’ve even lost some family but what I have not lost is my faith in God and the purpose he has for me,” says Tanika. She believes this process opened her eyes to the people she was keeping around in her life. She stepped out on faith and now she is stepping into favor. The biggest obstacle the owner/operator had when making the decision to step out on faith was leaving the area she has serviced for 11 years. She states, she searched for buildings in the area but every time it felt like the right decision, God told her no. It is now obvious that He had something better in store. “It’s funny how God brings things full circle and how He’s working things out even before there is a problem,” she says. When none of the buildings panned out on the north side of town, Tanika sought out a center she once worked at as her first professional job in child care. She dreamed of owning it and God had it all planned out. The center has eight classrooms, three grand playground areas, two huge offices, lots of storage, and nestled in a great neighborhood---on the opposite side of town of her St. Leo’s Street location. She questioned how she could leave the community she’s known for the past 11 years. How would she start all over. In the midle of her questioning God kept telling her not to worry.
She had fought to stay in a building that was not accommodating and tried to find buildings that were not quite right and ‘just make due’. Tanika remained faithful and accepted what the Lord had for her. She signed her name on the dotted line and the building was hers; at least that’s what she thought. The struggle however, was not over. Upon acquiring the new center she found that she was unable to accommodate the two daycares occupying the building. When learning of the news, the occupants did not find great happiness in allowing a newcomer in their facility and refused to leave. She was ridiculed by not being allowed to step foot into her own building. Yet she stood strong and overcame. Was it worth the struggle and the consistent inconsistencies? Tanika declares yes, and everything that has happened was used to make her stronger. She hopes through sharing her story she can be a calming spirit and help to plant seeds of faith in others. She has stood strong through the difficulty and has reached goals set for her by God. “There have been many lessons from this blessing; not only for myself, but for those I mentor and hopefully those reading this article.” On June 13th Educational Playtime Too! Inc. will be opening not one but two centers. The first will be located on Spring Garden Street servicing families with children ages six weeks to 12 years. The second facility is located on Yanceyville Street. This facility will house an after school and summer camp program for children ages three and up. The facility will also accommodate Tanika’s second business, Twirling Divas & Dancers Performing Arts Studio.

Along with working endlessly to open these two centers; Tanika and her mentee, Keyanda Thompson have worked together to open a secondary company. Props Academy will serve as a sister center to Educational Playtime Too! Inc. and will be housed in Savannah, Georgia. The center will service children ages five to 12 and will incorporate various forms of art as a premise for learning. The academy will utilize art brushes, dance equipment, writing utensils, etc as props for learning. Props Academy is also a mentoring program which focuses on building the whole child and helping them to build one another. Respect yourself and give others props when due. Doors will open May 23rd for summer camp.
“Faith is like a little seed, plant it and watch it grow; then watch it bloom.” Tanika Harris The excitement is obvious and although she states the nervousness is present, it is not apparent when speaking to Tanika. “I am ready to take on the world, I am ready to help others, I am ready to continue educating, I am ready to receive God’s grace; I am just ready,” she says. To celebrate, not only her own accomplishments but those of various women in the Greensboro area, Tanika is hosting a Blooming Day! She believes women in business are not celebrated enough and are considered ‘risks’ if they are succeeding. Her plan is to allow women owned businesses to showcase their talents to the community. This day is scheduled for June 11th, just two days before the grand opening of Educational Playtime Too! Inc I, II, and Twirling Divas After-School and Studio. This event is open to the community. Food, fun, and fantastic vendors. Faith is like a little seed, plant it and watch it grow; then watch it bloom. h

aving worked in the banking industry for more than 28 years, it would seem logical that if Jackie B. Williamson ever wanted to expand her own brand into another area, she would branch out into the same field. But that’s just not her style. Logic isn’t the only thing that drives her actions. She is just as sensitive and led by her passions. For Williamson her true passion belongs to helping others feel better, particularly through massage. A few years ago she decided becoming a massage therapist would fulfill her dreams. By her own admission she’s had an undercover and nearly undiscovered passion for it for years, but only recently decided to fully pursue it. “I was intrigued in high school. I used to dance and because it’s so physical I learned how to massage myself and even the other dancers and that’s really how I got into it. So over the years I set plans and goals and it has come to pass,” said Williamson.
Helping Others Through Massage
Jackie B. Williamson
But for Williamson the satisfaction comes more from helping others than herself. With a master’s degree in health administration education she knew she would end up in the health field helping others in some capacity. With massage therapy she is covering all bases. “I’ve always been interested and I figured I could combine my master’s degree with massage (therapy),” she said. “It’s just the fact that I’m helping someone. A person can have a tension headache and I can help them release that tension. If they experience pain, stiffness or circulation issues or they have a bad day and just need relaxation, free time or to be energized. I feel like I provide that type of service. Massage is good for all of that.” Having fast tracked through the accelerated program at the Kneaded Energy School of Massage in Greensboro, North Carolina, Williamson is fully licensed and certified for massage and bodywork therapy. Her clients originate from every walk of life, from business professionals to athletes and even to expectant mothers. According to Williamson various massage techniques have also been used as calming methods for the mentally impaired, hyperactive or infants. She says the benefits of massage are much more wide-ranging than most people would ever consider. Furthermore, the knowledge base that a therapist is required to maintain is quite impressive and extensive.

“I had to learn anatomy, which was hard, and just simply how the body works. I had to learn about all the systems in the body such as the nervous system and all the other systems. It’s on the medical side because you have to really talk to people and find out what’s going on in their bodies and that way you devise a (treatment) plan with different massage touches and techniques,” she said. “People might think it’s just their back, but it could have a different origin, it could be coming from their feet. If you’re standing all day, that pain may be going from your feet up your leg to your back. We learn about different pain spots in different areas. That’s why it’s so intriguing, because you can just go in so many different ways. It’s amazing to see a tense muscle being released by a specific massage technique and then to see a person feeling better is great.” Williamson’s office space is located at Massage at the Club Spa in Greensboro. She is able to offer the latest in massage and bodywork techniques including therapeutic massages such as deep tissue, which she notes doesn’t have to hurt as some people usually assume, Swedish, trigger point therapy, and Myofascial Release. For those areas that require extra attention, a hot stone massage is available as well. The technique uses heated basalt rocks, known for their heat retention properties, to relax and massage sore muscles. The stones can be used for their heat alone, or as massage tools used in combination with Swedish and deep tissue massage for complete relaxation and therapeutic results. Additionally, she uses hot towels, hydrotherapy, reflexology and range of motion to get the best results possible. Clients are able to book online and receive text message alert reminders for their appointments that can range from 30 – 90 minutes. Required to consistently grow and expand her skills through continuing education classes in massage therapy, Williamson is always learning new techniques such as Bamboo Infusion, which utilizes bamboo sticks in the massage, and teaching common wellness. She incorporates stretching, trigger point release, and breathing techniques in her massage sessions to help reduce stress, decrease pain and swelling, as well as improve circulation and enhance relaxation. Williamson is very active in her community and has great passion and excitement when it comes to helping people at work, school, and her church where she has been a lifetime member and leader. She regularly participates in health fairs and awareness events. Her love for helping others is what is fueling her next move, which she is already working towards. “Once I’ve been a massage therapist for over two years and acquired a certain amount of hours I’m eligible to teach classes. My future goal is to instruct as well,” she said. With a skill set that is so viable, necessary and in high demand there’s no doubt Williamson will meet every goal she sets. h

ust because the school year is coming to a close, it doesn’t mean the opportunity to sharpen your math skills is no longer available. It is important for students to retain information over the summer. Sheanna Bonner, owner of MathKnowledge2011, has a program geared towards those who wish to stay on top of their math game, and even gain an extra advantage on the next school year.
MathKnowledge2011 is built on one-on-one instruction, also described as differential instruction (educating a student based on how he/she learns best). It also includes hands-on learning or more visual learning instead of just paper and pencil. “MathKnowledge2011 takes a holistic approach to education,” says Bonner. “Educating a student is not possible without student motivation and a desire to learn. It also takes the support and efforts of the parent(s), family and teachers, as well as me to achieve maximum educational empowerment.” Some of the services provided by Bonner include tutorial in math, reading comprehension, writing, and other subjects. She also offers assistance in tutoring in certification courses (i.e. Algebra for LPN certification) and Consulting Education courses. In addition to providing test taking skills and test preparation services to her clients, Bonner also offers preparation/education for the next school year. Her typical clients are higher/level/high performing students who just need a little more assistance to master concepts. MathKnowledge2011 is able to provide a safe, caring Christian environment for young adult students whose may be single, married, and working while balancing their work and home life. Bonner says many busy parents are concerned with their children’s academics but lack the time needed to help them. She states that as concepts in school curriculum continue to be pushed down to a lower grade level, it is becoming more impossible for parents to have the expertise to assist their kids. Bonner serves as a advanced teacher with a three year average EVAAS data of (7.3). She has devoted her life to empower and impact those who wish to learn. Bonner seeks to contract with local school districts. h For more information please contact her at 336-339-2228 lavesi@bellsouth.net

homasville, N.C. native and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate, Anthony Anderson has accomplished a lot of things in his life. Though he is most proud of the relationships that have formed from these experiences and the lives of which he has had the opportunity to impact. Now currently married and residing in Durham, N.C., Anderson began teaching, coaching and mentoring in Chapel Hill-Carrboro city schools immediately after college. While pursuing his career, he also realized that he had a passion for business. That led to the creation of his first company, Double A’s Electronics of which he launched in 1998. What started as a self-taught hobby turned into a business where he sold and installed car stereo equipment. This venture quickly taught him about profit and loss. “Losing did not feel too well. While cultivating and increasing my business acumen, I learned that an exit strategy is just as important as the developmental phase, he says. Anderson continued to follow his passion and in 2006 he decided to go in a different direction. With the loss of his best friend and becoming a newlywed, he says his motivation to do more greatly increased. He created Guardian Consulting Group, a business consulting firm that specialized in cost cutting, long term and responsive assistance for small businesses, and launched a non-profit organization called, Things Change. In 2008, he entered into a contract with a professional sports and entertainment firm that focused on developing client-owned businesses. By 2009, he celebrated the opening of a Golden Corral franchise, his first major project. Within two and a half years, he developed a portfolio of client-owned businesses that currently generate over a $11,000,000 annually in

By Tamara Smith - Photos by Benji Kroma f you’ve had a long rough week, and need to let your hair down and take your mind away from all that worries you, The Sahara Reggae Band is sure to accommodate. This band has proven to be a true crowd pleaser that does not allow anyone to leave their venues unhappy. However, don’t be fooled by the name because The Sahara Reggae Band is so much more than just Reggae. This multi-talented group incorporates all genres of music into their performances, but keeps Reggae as its foundation. This type of musical performance has been dubbed the “Sahara style.” According to the band, “the people demand Sahara style, so we have to give them what they want!”

The Sahara Reggae Band prefers to provide a mixture of Reggae (which includes dancehall and Soca), R&B and African music. No matter who the audience is, the band will combine their talents and give you an unforgettable show. According to all the members, the group has a main mission to please and share their natural passions for music. All the members truly love what they do, and never feel that performing or composing is work. The Sahara Reggae Band is comprised of six spirited souls overflowing with positive energy with an innate musical thirst. Benji Kroma is the founder and lead male vocalist, who was born in Sierra Leone and raised in the church. He plays a host of instruments and ultimately accredits his success to his mother. Kroma founded the group in 2001 with its original members being his brother, Raymond Kroma (who now works behind the scenes), James “JC” Campbell, his current bass player, and Randy Fuller, his current drummer. Over the next 10 years or so, Benji would meet the rest of his musical family, and complete his band. As a performer and musician, he finds joy and rewards from seeing others happy and satisfied with the band’s music. He has found that his “happy” place is with music and performing, which transcends into vehemently loving what he does. Although he does write a great deal of his own music (and plays a host of instruments), he has found that the fans of The Sahara Reggae Band prefer to hear songs they are familiar with, but with an added touch. He admits that five percent of their music is original, and 95 percent is cover music mainly due to the demands of their fans. Songs that people know that are relatable, and they try to cater to everyone, says Benji in the interview. One major aspect of being a musician for him is ensuring the audience is satisfied and happy. He has been influenced by Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy, Elton John, Madonna, Cameo, and Michael Jackson to name a few. A second vocalist in the band is the sultry, beautiful and harmonious, Trice D’Vine Wright, who is pursuing a dual career as a member of The Sahara Reggae Band, and as a solo artist. Wright attributes her love of music from her familial roots, as her father had a Reggae band and her mother who was a member of a gospel band. She became acquainted with The Sahara Reggae Band in 2012. Wright exclaims that she feels she was born to sing, and she absolutely loves what she does. Her main influences throughout her career have been her family, children, coworkers, and a host of influential entertainers such as Beyoncé, Jazmin, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lauryn Hill, Cece Peniston, and The Temptations, or more importantly anyone with a powerful voice and a message. What Trice loves the most about being a performer is the energy that she exerts and captures from her audience. She has a natural way of connecting with people and making them feel comforting and happy. Trice puts her heart and soul into her music, and feels that any hurt, pain, joy, or happiness spills out into her music. She always considers herself as a member of The Sahara Band, and she truly feels they are a family. The one message she has for her fans is that there is always a happy place no matter what is going on. Keep your head up and stay positive. Continued from previous page On drums is Randy Fuller, who also found love for music in the church choir as a child. He plays a few different instruments, and once out of college played drums for RCA Records for nine years. In 2000, Randy and Benji crossed paths, and the rest is history. He accredits his success and being to his mother, first and foremost, and being grateful for meeting good caring people. After venturing into Reggae, Randy has learned so much about his culture and is truly blessed. He gives most thanks to guitarist Johnny McGhee from the group LTD for giving him the best realistic advice on being a responsible musician and not succumbing to life’s demons. He expressed in the interview that he loves what he does, and the most satisfaction he gets is from the reaction on people’s faces and how they move when they hear their music. Reggae taught him patience and discipline in his overall life. He believes that the Reggae culture in the Greensboro area is still very small, so it works for them to take well known songs and flip them with a touch of Reggae to keep the crowd satisfied. Bringing in their original works will come when the audience “gets full” off their current performances and ask for more original pieces. Randy’s top musical inspiration is Parliament Funkadelic. His main message to fans is simply to “free your mind, relax, and loosen up.” For the future, he wants to do all he can to see The Sahara Band make it big in the Triad area. Terrell Smith is the band keyboardist and music director. He says the band plays a diverse mixture of music with a Reggae flavor. Smith exclaims the bands mission is to put out good music and make people dance until they sweat and can’t dance anymore. He has a long-standing background in the music industry, dating back to childhood in the church. His musical influences include his high school band director and mentor, Stevie Wonder, and Chuck Brown. His message to the audience would be a quote that he ran across in a high school from Mahatma Gandhi, which read: “Be the change you want to see in the world,” and Smith says that change starts with him. Ali Gariba is the band’s sound technician, and makes sure everyone sounds perfect. He was born in Guyana, South America and came to the U.S. at the age of 19. Gariba’s roots are based in Soca and Reggae, so being a part of a Sahara Reggae based band was a no brainer. He only plays one instrument socially, but is instead more technical with an extensive background in the automotive and sound engineering field. Being deep-rooted in Reggae, he has a true love for the music and is inspired by the culture and Bob Marley. He considers the band his family, much like the rest of the members. He got connected with the band one night by happenstance at a show at the former Montego Bay in Greensboro. He says they give the people something to dance to and have a good time. They allow their audience to “breathe” and “vent” while they are there, and to forget about all their troubles. He would love one day for the band to pursue Country music at some of their venues, considering their audience of course. His future plans are ultimately to retire in Antigua, and bring The Sahara
24
Band with him. Aside from that, he projects he will be a longstanding member of the band, and looks forward to their bright future. According to Gariba, there will be a day where Sahara will be exposed to the world and will allow them to quit their day jobs and just live and produce good music. Lastly, James Jahsee “JC” Campbell is the band’s bass player, and one of the original members. JC connected with Benji through a mutual friend in 2001. For Campbell, being a musician allows him to be in a place of refuge where he can release. Influences for him include Gil Scott Heron, Curtis Mayfield, and Sly and The Family Stone due to his father and the message the artists presented. Reggae drew him in once he really listened to and related to what the message was, as he lost major interest in “real” Hip Hop in the 90’s. He sees a clear future with the band, and can definitely see them progressing. His message to fans is to always love what you do, and make sure you are doing it for yourself. If you are doing it for the wrong reasons, you will find yourself completely discouraged instead of finding peace and comfort. The Sahara Reggae Band truly makes up one amazingly gifted high energy band. Each of the members exude genuine love, passion, and a zest for life, and it is certainly felt from the moment you meet them. All the members have the same values and mission when it comes to their talents and the band overall. They all live for music in some regard, and receive pure pleasure from sharing their love of music with their audiences. I encourage anyone in the area, or visiting to go check out any of their shows, and you are guaranteed to not leave disappointed. The band plays two to three times monthly with a gig every fourth Friday of the month at Ham’s Restaurant on West Gate City Blvd., as well as a show at Churchill’s on Elm Street every second Saturday of the month. They currently have one CD available, and are working on their second. You can follow this sublime band by simply Google searching their name on the internet, or looking them up on Facebook or Instagram. The Sahara Reggae Band is so much more than just Reggae, and they identify with whatever audience they have and accommodate accordingly. If you have not had the opportunity to check out this sultry and entertaining band, then you should consider doing so as soon as possible. h

atoya Vanhook is the ‘Boss Lady’ of Beyond Beauty Salon and Training Center, Inc. in Burlington, North Carolina. The Burlington native and devout woman of God has definitely put forth a valiant effort to achieve her personal goals and fulfill her dreams. In the beginning, she set her sights on being the best cosmetologist in the industry. To achieve this, she had to develop a unique styling ability. Vanhook started styling hair long before she enrolled in cosmetology school. She began in her kitchen, styling pony tails in the microwave, with the Pump It Up spray. Next she moved to Nina’s Hair Design and focused on braids and catered to a mostly male clientele. She then attended Alamance Community College and obtained her professional license before landing at Ayannas Hairport and soon transitioned to Ladies of Distinction in Graham. She would eventaully purchase that salon and Beyond Beauty was birthed, 11 years ago.
Latoya’s Beliefs For Success
God, First
Family, Second Career, Third
“My goal and assignment as a successful hairstylist is to inspire, encourage, and motivate other up and coming hair styling professionals,” she says. Through many years of trial and error while owning her own salon, Vanhook made many mistakes. She admits that she lost her focus and didn’t manage herself or her business appropriately. She even felt like throwing in the towels, literally and figuratively. “In order for someone to have a testimony, you must first be tested,” she says. Those experiences pushed her to seek a purpose driven life and she now exudes a contagious confidence amongst her clients and business partners at Beyond Beauty. She now realizes that people come to Beyond Beauty not just their services, but also for an experience. “When I come to work I just don’t see it as a job, but as an opportunity to touch someones life,” she explains. That is the core principle behind Beyond Beauty and something that her clients have became accustomed to. Vanhook has envisioned the footprint of Beyond Beauty Salon & Training Center, Inc. will reach more locations. The duplicate locations will be successful by default because according to Vanhook, her blueprint is fool proof. They specialize in educating their clients on the importance of maintaing healthy hair. Thier products and services include updo’s, lashes and braids, cuts, weaves, makeup artistry and classes. They have recently incorporated Sacha Cosmetics, an official line that originated in Trinidad and Tabago and was used exclusively for the Miss America and Miss USA Peagant. They are the only salon to carry this line in the state of North Carolina. Amy Clay describes herself as a energetic, witty, outgoing, reliable, trustworthy woman with a big personality, and even bigger heart. Still glowing in the newness of her marriage, Clay doesn’t hesitate to boast on her husband and family, which makes her life complete. She is on schedule to graduate from Alamance Community College with a focus in Cosmetic Art and plans to use her skills and knowledge to become on the best stylist in the area. “Being a new graduate, I am eager and willing to try new systems to accommodate my clients. My services are basic but I specialize in color, color corrections , cuts and anything considered to be outside the box,” she says.

on God throughout them. Most importantly, she confesses that she learned that God was with her a whole lot more than she sought after Him. “From the times when I had no idea where a meal would come from, where my next tank of gas would be pumped from, or how I could get through another day at work without the mind-set of what to do next,” He was always there. In addition to other joys, she relishes in the fact that her children are living proof that she did some things right while raising them. “They have shown me through their success that I didn’t fail them and they were listening and paying attention,” she states. Even though they are grown, they still look up to her as a role model, just as the other stylist of Beyond Beauty do. “They have shown me that they are resilient through all adversities. We are a force to be reckon with,” says Jacob. h

Courtney Brown I started my Bovanti journey in June of 2010. I chose Bovanti as my work place because I have always had a passion for beauty as well as a passion for empowering other women. Working at Bovanti has taught me great leadership skills and also how to work with others. I fell in love with Bovanti because it is a black owned business, and the level of professionalism amazed me. I’ve loved Bovanti products since I was a teen in high school, so I knew that the product was great before I was hired. In order to sell the product you must first believe in the product I’m definitely a believer when it comes to Bovanti. The products are natural and they cater to women of color. My favorite Bovanti products definitely are the Hydrating Skincare System. It helps to keep the skin hydrated, nourished, and ageless. I have conquered so much being a Bovanti Beauty Star. Recently, I received the Mega Super Star award for my continuous dedication and outstanding sales. Bovanti has taught me to never quit and that the sky is the limit. I have touched so many lives and have built relationships with my customers. That is what being a Bovanti “Mega Star” is all about.

The Value Of A When I was a child my mother instilled in us the importance of being respectful of other people’s property and valuable items. When my mom took us to the store or to someone’s house with her, she would tell us, “Do not touch anything”. Today I understand the wisdom behind her statement because obedience to her directive would significantly reduced the likelihood of valuables being damaged or taken. My mother would also leave money and other valuable items lying around the house fully expecting that item to be there when she returned. My mother did not tolerate us taking anything that was not ours without permission. Back then most parents believed in corporal punishment, including my mom and she would exercise her right to discipline us if she felt it was necessary. As a result, my mom laid a foundation for her children at an early age with regard to stealing, if you steal you will pay the consequence. The legal term used for stealing is larceny. Larceny is to steal, take or carry away an item without the consent of the owner and with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of the item. The full content of the statute can be found in North Carolina General Statute 14-72. In North Carolina a person as young as 16 years old can be charged as an adult if they are caught stealing. Unfortunately, a larceny charge/conviction on an individual’s record can have a very negative impact on their future. Even though most parents will impart valuable wisdom to their children about the above referenced matters, there will be some individuals who suffer from a lapse of good judgment, peer pressure or just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. If this happens seek legal advice as soon as possible, and give our office a call. h

native of Yanceyville, N.C. Barbaralene Sellars has been a professional stylist for nine years. After graduating from Bartlett Yancey High School she engaged in a career as a print operator that spanned for 22 years. Although grateful for the employment opportunities she had, Sellars knew there was something else that she wanted to do with her life. It was styling hair. She later enrolled and graduated from Alamance Community College and with her professional license as a cosmetologist in 2007. She then began working at Heavenly Creations Hair Salon in Burlington, a place that she has called home ever since. What she loves most about her career is making her clients feel confident and good about themselves. She decided to pursue a career in hairstyling because she has a passion to style hair all of her life. Long before enrolling in school she had been styling hair at home. As the time has passed, Sellars also developed a mind for business and is now the co-owner of Heavenly Creations. As a salon owner she admits there are some challenges. This includes the constant changing of the hair industry, the revolving door of the salon for hair stylist, and keeping up with the latest styling trends. Even still she has found success by being consistent and available for her clientele. “I do get tired from working 12-14 hours per day, but this is what I signed up to do and I absolutely love it,” she says. Sellars is always offering advice for new stylist who are fresh out of school and entering the styling profession. The most important thing is to remain focused and hungry, and always eager to learn more. She says that continuing education classes are just as important as choosing the proper product lines to use. To be a successful stylist, Sellars says you must also be a good business person. ‘If you don’t manage your time and money efficiently, you will not last long,” says Sellars. h

Vitamin C - The “Simple” Antioxidant The effects of Vitamin C has been long noted to be beneficial to skin health. Proven ideology of these benefits can be traced back to practices of the Tang Dynasty of Tibet in 618AD and also to the “rose water” cold cream used by Native Americans. Most individuals are sure to have heard of Vitamin C as it pertains to consumption for its immunity effects but consider this ― topical application.
Which one? There are many Vitamin C preparations marketed that can be applied topically but products containing ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid is considered the most beneficial. For that reason, it is the form of Vitamin C that is found in well formulated dermatologist-tested skincare products. Other effective forms however include retinyl ascorbate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate and ascorbyl palmitate to name a few.
Vitamin C. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is normally found in the layers of healthy skin. Aging and other environmental stresses such as smoking and UV exposure can dramatically decrease the amount of Vitamin C in the skin. While ingestion of Vitamin C as previously stated is ideal, after the bloodstream is saturated with this antioxidant it is not always reliable in transporting it to the where it can continue to be beneficial. This is why topical application is important. Topical application of Vitamin C is considered to be skin-rejuvenating and noted to be approximately 20 times more effective than oral ingestion.
In addition to choosing a form that is stable for application, one need to consider the packaging. Vitamin C is an unstable antioxidant and will break down when exposed to light and air. Consumers should look for products that are packages in opaque tubes or pump bottles. The more air and light restricted the container the better. Lastly it is improving to mention that more is not always better. Studies have proven that preparations that contain 20% of Vitamin C is better abscorbed by the skin. This does not mean that lower percentages does not have some effect; higher than 20% could be a waste of efforts and money.
The Benefits. Vitamin C’s skin benefits are mostly attributed to its effect on collagen synthesis. Collagen is the framework for firm, supple, elastic youthful looking skin. While Vitamin C plays a critical role in the formation of collagen, there is further evidence that shows that it also stimulates collagen production. Besides being an important factor in collagen synthesis, other skin benefits of vitamin C include: -protection of free radicals that can cause premature aging -reduction of hyperpigmentaion and other types of sun damage -healing of inflammatory lesions related to acne -hydration of skin cells-supple radiant skin
Final thoughts. Vitamin C is the simple antioxidant because it is widely available and an easy powerful anti-aging corrective agent. With all skin care regimens it is important to consult with a skin care specialist for the most effective results. One preparation of Vitamin C may be beneficial for one with acne but not for someone with rosacea or other skin disorders. At Of Skin and Wellness we are committed to assisting with the development of a skin care regimen that is tailored for you. h
