Back To School Supply Drive By Alana Allen According to the Kids Count report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, there are about 580,000 children in North Carolina that currently live in poverty. Research also shows that 67 percent of students in the Guilford County School system are living in families suffering from poverty. This means children in our city are living in households that lack necessary resources such as food, clothing, and school supplies. In North Carolina, one in five children does not have access to basic school supplies due to their family’s economic circumstances. Receiving a backpack filled with the tools needed to succeed in school can be a life-changing experience for a child. Studies show, children who are equipped and prepared to return back to school have a more positive feeling of self-worth, miss fewer days, more attentive in class, improved classroom behavior and achieve higher test scores in all academic subjects. Fortunately, a Greensboro/High Point-based nonprofit is making it easier for children to succeed inside the classroom. I Am A Queen is doing a call to action for the community to step up and to participate in the “Fill the Backpack” Campaign. This campaign will support I Am A Queen’s 7th Annual Back to School Drive on Saturday, August 1, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Windsor Recreation Center, located at 1601 E. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, N.C. This event is open to community and the goal is to help 1,000+ children in the Triad.
The longer days of the summer provide us with more of an opportunity to spend time with our familyand catch up with friends. There is even extra time in the day to pay more attention to our finances. Theextra hours of sunlight during the summer can be just what we need to inspire and energize us enough toinvest in the things that mean the most to us. We were stuck indoors during most of the winter; spring was a time to shake the dust off and get ourhouse back in order. Now that summer is here, we can go to work every day and still have extra daylightto spend time outdoors with our family. Even if we do not have much vacation time, we can catch abaseball game in the evenings or play basketball or tennis with our family members. The sunshine andfresh air is good for our health but the happy expression on the face of our family members is priceless. Friends are important and I was once told that “You have to be a fiend to have a friend.” There aremany ways that we can rekindle friendships that may have fizzled a little during the winter. We can invitea friend to go for walk in the park. This walk can include our four legged friends too. Our pets probablyfelt a little neglected during the winter as well.A cookout is also a great way to show our friends that we appreciate them.It does not have to be anything extravagant or costly. It can be a potluck meal, allowing everyoneshare in the preparation. Most people have a special dish that they enjoy sharing with others. If you have difficulty finding friends of family members who want to hang out with you thissummer, concentrate on your finances and they will flock to you. During the summer we can use ourhobbies to make extra money.
I Am A Queen’s mission is to empower others to be a blessing and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Filling a backpack will cost an individual less than $25 by purchasing a backpack, paper, pencil, folders, crayons, glue sticks and scissors. Donors are encouraged to drop off filled backpacks at designated drop off locations in the city or make a monetary donation on I Am A Queen’s website. All donations are tax-deductible for this community effort. This year’s media partners for the event include Huami Magazine, 97.1 WQMG and Born to DJ. Also, I Am A Queen has partnered with local organizations and businesses that include James B. Dudley High School Athletic Booster Club, Beyond the Block, Footsteps to Follow, Destined 4 Greatness Event Planning, Ange’le’ N. Simpson Foundation of Love, In the Image of I Am, Granny’s Love Outreach and the Live Life Foundation. In addition to their support, each partner plays a critical role in challenging others to give. h To learn more information about this event, donating and drop off locations, please visit www.iamaqueen.org or email info@iamaqueen.org.
Hobbies like photography, lawn maintenance and baking can all generate extra income. We can alsouse the extra daylight to plant a garden that we can use to generate income by selling the harvest. Or wecan give some of the bounty away to family members and friends. Summer is a great time to learn something new. The internet contains a wealth of videos that makelearning fun and easy. There are also free classes online that teach everything from “How to Invest in theStock Market" to “How to Build a Website.” Mastering either of these subjects can offer unlimitedfinancial rewards. Whether you take an online class or take a friend to the park this summer, you will be investing inyourself and your future. Sitting in front of a television for hours will rob you, your family and yourfriends of valuable time that can never be reclaimed. It is easy to stay inside on the couch watchingtelevision on a long hot summer day but if we turn off the television, we can turn up the rewards. h

She Is
Simply
Unique By Terry L. Watson Photos by Shannon King
S
hannon King is Simply Unique! She is also the innocent five year old girl with unique features (natural born red head with freckles) that received a lot of attention from the time she was born. She often wondered what life would have been like had she been born with black hair and no freckles. She is also the 12 year old tween who struggled to understand her unique make-up, and the 16 year old who sought love in all the wrong places and used drugs to numb the pain of unsatisfied needs. King is also the 20 year old adult discovering that life throws you curve balls more often than expected. She is also the soon to be 30 year old woman who understands how her past experiences help to shape her into the woman God created her to be.
King was born a military brat with one older brother. Her journey started the day she realized she was different. She dealt with self-esteem issues while her parents were intertwined in a domestic relationship. “Some days you saw the love other days you witnessed the pain. They fought and verbally abused each other for years to the point that my brother and I found ourselves in the middle of their cheating affairs. My brother knew about my fathers affairs and I my mothers,” she says. They had their own family closet of mess to deal with and no one on the outside knew the half of what was really going on in the corners of their home. Her dad was a heavy drinker (morning, noon, night - breakfast, lunch and dinner) and her mom battled self-esteem issues on top of other unknown issues, which she says correlate with how she experienced drinking and self-esteem issues. Her mother’s battle blinded her. “How was I to know how to block the judgement of others and see the beauty in myself if she couldn’t do it for herself,” King asks. King says both of her parents hid their years of trouble deep within only to play them out as they attempted to raise their kids. They had a pretty decent middle-class lifestyle. However, she says there was fear, betrayal, guilt, shame, abuse, and a string of other mental health issues brewing heavily within the years that would cause her to endure the greatest pain of her life. “I was molested at age 12 by a family member’s boyfriend. We were in town visiting family and I was invited to spend the weekend with my cousins family,” she says. While watching a movie, the boyfriend of someone at the house used the opportunity to apprehend her innocence. “I couldn’t believe what was happening. I wanted to get up and scream ‘STOP’, but I froze and kept my eyes closed tight as my heart raged against my chest. The next morning I cried to my cousin’s aunt that I wanted to go home. I said nothing to no-one,” she says. That was not her last encounter with molestation as several more followed as she grew older. Astonishingly, the one that hit closest to home was when her father molested her for two years at the age of 15. “There were many times I awoke to my father in my room and only God knows the things he done to me and for how long as I slept,” she explains. Though she told her mother of her fathers’ actions, the torture continued. At age 13, she was raped and it resulted in a pregnancy and eventual abortion. King says her mother passed it off as a tumor that was removed by surgery. At the time she says she didn’t recognize it as rape, but yet she still awoke to a man having sex with her. Those years were the scariest and most devastating times of her teenage life, but not the last. Continued on next page

don’t Complain
As the years went on King says she found relief in drugs, alcohol and highly promiscuous acts. She dated and experienced the same verbal and physical abuse once dealt by her parents. In 2005, her roads became a little darker. After her parents announced they would be getting a divorce, her father shot her mother while she slept and eventually took his life the following morning. A year later, as the verbal and physical abuse continued with her boyfriend, King says he told her he wanted to kill her and how he would do it. “I struggled tremendously after my parent’s death including fights with family members, homelessness, drugs, alcohol, and promiscuity. If you could name it, I felt it and dealt with it,” she says. Soon things would take a turn for the better in her life after she gave her life to God in 2009. King has also started a foundation, Simply’ Unique Purpose whose focus is “Putting A Voice On Childhood Sexual Abuse And In Support to Help Prevent Child Sexual Abuse”. She also is helping survivors and supporters to embrace and understand the abuse, support the fight and learn the epidemic traits for generation sakes, support and encourage survivors to go from silence (victim)--to sound (survivor) --to healed. King also strives to motivate others to seek and reach their destined purpose and provide love from a survivors perspective. In addition to being a inspirational speaker, King is also a board member of I Am A Queen, a foundation geared towards empowering teenage girls. King also graduated from ECPI in 2009 and obtained a B.A. in Psychology from Guilford College in 2015. She currently has plans to pursue her masters in Social Work in 2016.

When it is all said and done, King would like for her legacy to be about inspiration and the journey to discovering one’s unique self. “All I truly want in the end is to see others living a happier, fulfilled life by not allowing what they went through to defeat them. All I have endured could have took me out on numerous occasions. Instead I took that pain and turned it into a service to help others,” says King. “I choose to show others how they’re Simply Unique, one step at a time”. h

Creative Management Source, Inc. “Lighter Path To A Brighter Future” By Tonya Dixon - Photos By Howard Gaither
T
he mental health industry and all of its subsidiaries and divisions is often difficult and stressful to navigate. Laws, rules and regulations are constantly changing, upgrading and downgrading, merging and even being eliminated across state and federal levels. It’s no wonder many parents, caretakers and mental services clients find it hard to qualify for, utilize and secure available resources.
Creative Management Source, Inc. has the knowledge, education, experience and complete service options to help improve and light the pathway for individuals that have mental health and/or developmental delays or disabilities. Since 2005, the company has served Greensboro and surrounding area adults, 18 years and older “who have serious emotional disturbances, mental illness or dual diagnosis.” The company is licensed with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation, and is accredited by The Council on Quality and Leadership. In addition, the company is fully insured and maintains all required first aid certifications including blood borne pathogens and therapeutic holds. Program Director, Barbara Hendrix, along with agency director, Erika Hendrix, and business and human resources director, Kimberly Perkins, run a tight, effective ship. The partners bring decades of experience and knowledge to the thriving business. All three have worked tirelessly within different aspects of the mental health and social work field. The passion they have for the industry and especially the people that fall within the category of mental health is evidenced by their determination to go above and beyond the call of duty and scope of their job descriptions all for the sake of clients who so desperately need them as advocates. In fact, an advocate is exactly what Barbara, Erika and Kimberly consider themselves. “We definitely advocate for parents and patients. We help them with who, what, when, where, how and what to do next,” Barbara says. “We have something to offer to a student in the occupational course of studies. The transition takes place here and if we can’t offer what they need we can direct them to those who can. We will find some type of resource. It’s just in us to do it.”
As former case manager and mental health professionals, the group recognizes it takes a hands-on, approach and familiarity to successfully deliver superb service to a community of people that are often overlooked and underrepresented. Creative Management Source offers a wide range of services to clients. One of the most important services is being able to connect with parents and caretakers once the client has emerged from high school or another structured program with a diploma or certificate, which is certainly honorable, yet does not qualify for college entry. When caretakers are unsure of the next step, the staff of Creative Management Source can simply step in and help lead the way. Many programs are offered such as adult development, day support, psychosocial and vocation. Through teaching independent living skills and money management as well as educational, vocational and social skills, clients are able and prepared to function as productive citizens. At the agency’s facility, which can accommodate up to 50, clients are given instruction based on their individual needs and learning abilities. There are daily, specific activities that teach activities such as simple cooking techniques (for those who are mentally capable of handling such tasks), mock retail situations and scenarios that teach real world circumstances with money handling as well as social interaction. Programs are designed to help individuals taking prepatory classes towards a GED. The continuation or development of various therapy plans can also be integrated in a client’s individualized treatment strategy. Daily general hygiene is a staple skill set that is constantly and repetitiously being taught to clients. Additionally, dental and vision care may also be coordinated. The premise is that once basic, physical needs are met and sufficiently accounted for, then Creative Management takes clients to the next step of developing and meeting simple goals. For many of the clients, Creative Management Source becomes a home away from home and an opportunity to explore and develop. Productivity in some capacity (however limited it may be) is the best possible outcome. Erika makes it clear that a great deal of the learning experience is accomplished throughout the community. “We try to expose our individuals. We are unique in that we don’t sit them in [our] building all day. We get them out because in a real life situation no one sits in a building all day. There are people they interact with, different environments and settings. It enables them to develop and articulate their likes and dislikes. They get to see and meet new people. At times we have to help them with social skills and communication cues, but it’s all a part of the learning process.” Clients are routinely taken to places such as the library, the YMCA, restaurants and other public facilities. For more work training opportunities the agency has coordinated with other social agencies such as The Servant Center, Out of the Garden and Meals on Wheels. Volunteering and skill training is significantly importantly to the growth and maturation of mentally delayed and disabled individuals. “The stigma that people who have traumatic brain injury or other mental delays cannot function in our society, culture or world is not true,” Barbara adds. “If they have the right program they can be productive, albeit sometimes with limitations. Erika adds, “Everybody can learn something. It may not be on the level as others, but everybody can learn. We just help them identify what that is.” Each month the agency has “client week”, in which the client can choose what they would like to do (within reason) and work on. The requests they receive are often varied and even sometimes outlandish, but it only shows that many of the individuals are growing and developing and recognizing the options available to them. The road to developing the business has not always been easy, but a sincere trust and belief that God would pave the way as well as hard work, determination, and simply a desire to see others prosper has been the key to 10 years of success. Creative Management Source firmly believes in focusing on the person, rather than the disability, which makes them one of the best and most dedicated agencies in the area. The staff truly believes in increasing the quality of life, providing a sense of normality and developing individuals. “We want them to be as normal as possible within their world,” Kimberly says. h

Mercedes Garrison Presents

he Bee Flawless Salon and Hair Boutique has a unique style and flair all its own. The upscale salon perfectly blends sophistication and community comradery. Moreover, the salon is simply an extension and true to form representation of owner and stylist, Mercedes Garrison. The Burlington, North Carolina native is serious about her craft. From the time she was a young girl doing hair for family and friends in her great grandmother’s salon, she automatically knew it was something she would be doing for the rest of her life. “I never envisioned myself doing anything else. It basically just fell into my hands,” Garrison says. Since 2007, she has been making her mark across Burlington, Greensboro and Durham, gleaning from many salons along the way. The result is the excellence of Bee Flawless Salon. It’s
not that Garrison set out to make a name for herself or even to become an owner, but when the ball started rolling she made sure to make her salon completely her own. “I’ve worked with many people so I’ve just developed a feel of what I would do differently. I took a little bit from all the salons I worked at and brought it all here under my vision and what I want to do.” Bee Flawless is a full service salon that provides for every hair, nail and makeup need. Whether clients are relaxed or natural, desire blowouts, cuts, color, extensions or need treatments, Bee Flawless has a team of licensed, fully qualified and experienced stylists available to meet and exceed those needs. Bee Flawless ‘s natural hair stylist, Deanna, specializes in Box Braids, Senegalese Twist, Marly Twist, Cherokee Braids and Crochet styles. Their nail technician Ebony offers manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, and gel nails.
Additionally she has numerous options for designs such as Swarovski Crystals, 3D Art, Inlay Art and Creative Flat Paint Art. Each client receives a complete consultation before being serviced. Garrison jokes she practically asks a million questions before the customer even comes in, so they will know how to properly serve and treat their hair. She specializes in helping her clients maintain overall healthy hair as well as different weaving techniques, cuts and coloring, which all are perfect complements to the fact that the salon is also a hair boutique, selling virgin hair directly to the customer. It’s an option that Garrison knew would provide her customers with greater flexibility and styling alternatives. Clients can rest assured that Bee Flawless Hair is grade 6A, chemical free, unprocessed, and 100% pure virgin. “Many people are ordering their own hair online, which is fine, but often times they are ordering what they think is virgin hair only to find out that it’s virgin remy or blended hair,” Garrison says. “It may not be completely virgin, then [the client] mentions that it’s cheaper, but I believe you get what you pay for. [Our hair] comes from younger donors, which means the hair hasn’t been through as much damage, like sun damage or effects from medication.”
Clients can rest assured that Garrison has put in all the hard work and guess work. When it comes to knowing hair and hair types she is painfully aware of what’s real and what’s not. She admits it took a bit of trial and error as well as a significant loss of a couple thousand dollars before she got it right. Now that all the kinks have been ironed out she stays fully stocked with every texture including Indian, Brazilian, Peruvian and Malaysian straight, body wave and deep wave. The hair comes in its natural state and varying lengths, but can be custom colored, cut and treated for a personal match. For extra convenience clients are able to view the hair, different textures and wave patterns as well as purchase hair completely online. Continued on page 26

owners. As dire as the fact may be, statistics are even greater within minority groups, particularly African Americans. Many African Americans were not raised in households where finances were abundant and/or discussed. Although the problem plagues all people groups, African American’s by and large suffer the greatest. Harper is on a personal and professional crusade to reverse the notions and mentalities of “ignore it and it will go away” or “it will work itself out” or “make it and spend it”.

K
enneth J. Harper, Jr. is the founder and chief executive officer of Harpco Benefits Alliance – a Insurance and Financial Services Brokerage company. Harper’s passion for the financial services industry is rivaled only by his professional and personal experience and education.
Harper is a licensed insurance agent in the state of North Carolina. He also holds non-resident licenses in Georgia, Florida and Ohio. Nevertheless, his experience in the financial services field began many years prior with a less than friendly encounter with the Internal Revenue Service.
Harpco Benefits Alliance makes sure the client is intricately involved in the financial planning processes. The company recommends customers take a hands-on approach to the decisions that will be effecting their lives and legacy. Additionally, the company emphasizes the importance of education in order to break the cycle of poor financial management.
What exactly does Harpco offer? Over 100 Carriers • Life insurance with living benefits. Most people understand the general premise behind life insurance, however an equal amount have little to no understanding regarding living benefits. Life insurance with living benefits offers protection and financial assistance in the event of terminal, critical and chronic illness as well as death.
“I received a letter from the IRS stating that I owed $8,000 in taxes. I almost passed out at the mailbox,” he says. Harper had a huge, impending claim looming over his head, but his fiscal condition forced him to recognize his dire situation. It became evident that he was sorely ignorant of basically any financial matter, not to mention blind to his own financial state of affairs. Harper admits his outlook was grim. He says, “I didn’t know the difference between a mutual friend and mutual fund.” Everything changed when Harper spoke with a Primerica representative, who not only forced him to face his financial woes head on, but also gave him hope for a brighter future by introducing him to an accountant. After he learned about tax deductions from his accountant, Harper realizied that he didn’t owe the IRS $8,000.00, but instead they owed him $10,000. “When I got that check I quit my job and got an Insurance license,” he says. Fed up and frustrated with his own financial situation, Harper made a vow to change. While he was planning his own future, he couldn’t help but think about all the other individuals who were just like him – unaware, uninformed and no plan for tomorrow – especially African Americans. Founded in 2014, Harpco (Helping acquire rated policy coverage options) helps build a sound financial foundation for the average, working citizen. The agency strives to establish and increase their quality of life and fulfill dreams for years to come through life and health insurance as well as retirement strategies and legal plans. Harper holds his Series 6, 63 and 26 securities licenses and will be offering Securities and Investment products in the Fall of 2015. He also has over 18 years of direct sales experience, and nine years of experience providing financial products and services through working directly in the middle class community. His years of experience ultimately revealed the huge need that existed for greater financial literacy. According to Harper, the average minority business owner has no viable succession plan, not to mention inadequate insurance and representation for the surprises and financial mishaps that will inevitably happen. He continues by saying, although the problem is widespread, the issue will ultimately have the greatest and most profound effect on the middle class – where most Americans find themselves. Just like Harper’s personal financial crisis, a lack of understanding, insufficient or poor fiscal recordkeeping, as well as a lackluster desire to even understand such matters and fear compound together as the foundational problem for most individuals and small business
• Retirement Strategies. The company offers plans and options to help clients secure money for the future including, Traditional and Roth IRAs, permanent life insurance and other options. • Legal Plans. Legal plans are necessary to protect the unexpected issues of life. From car accidents to divorce, customers can rest assured they will receive qualified legal advice and representation. Harpco also offers Business Owners Financial Services including Buy-Sell Funding, Key Man Person Insurance, Business Valuation, Business Legal Protection Plans, and Employer Group Benefits for employees. Aditionally they offers Life, Health, and Accident, Disability, Cancer, Dental, Vision, Hearing and Hospital Indemnity plans. Their services are complimented with Final Expense Plans, Term, Whole Life, Guaranteed Issue, Mortgage Protection, Index Universal Life, Universal Single Premium/Whole Life, Will and Estate Planning Services, and Identity Theft Services. Harpco Benefits Alliance brand and company will bring a “value” and “trust” much needed and well over due to the financial services industry, middle class America, and the African American community. Harpco has devised and designed a specific need based portfolio of financial products that include financial literacy seminars, community outreach, and faith based initiative programs. The company has avowed to forge and build loyalty in the community unlike any other financial services institution in the industry. h

rom 8:30am to 9:00am kindergarten through eighth grade students of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School Summer Program can be heard raising their voices during Harambee. The term is Swahili for “let’s come together”. Harambee promotes unity, inspiration and uplifting. Starting with the Hallelujah Chorus, students gear up and get motivated for the day through various cheers, chants and call and response. It’s what Freedom School is all about. It’s an opportunity for kids to learn, be encouraged and empowered at the same time. For five years Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro (BCDI) has worked in conjunction with Children’s Defense Fund to establish Greensboro’s first CDF Freedom School. Freedom School
is a nationally certified summer literacy program that helps children avoid the “summer slide”, develop a love and enjoyment of reading, build self-esteem, promote positive attitudes toward learning and ultimately become scholars. The program is primarily for minority students, but just like BCDI-G, it is available to any child. “Research conducted by Children’s Defense Fund shows that we, minorities, particularly African Americans, operate better as a community,” says BCDI-G Executive Director, Karen Thompson. “For the summer we don’t want the kids just to see it as another classroom; we want them to see it as something fun. Some of our kids come from difficult backgrounds. Our goal is to remind the children that regardless of where they are or where they come from they can be somewhere higher. The message through the program is that there is something inside of them that is stronger.”
“For the summer we don’t want the kids just to see it as another classroom; we want them to see it as something fun.”
Students start their structured day at nine o’clock. Each classroom has a daily agenda, including an integrated reading curriculum of books that are specifically selected by a group of African American facilitators from across the country, who assign books that are culturally relevant. Basically everything throughout the day is tied in some fashion to the book for that week. Activities range from D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) to dance, Karate, chess or drama. The children are inundated with activities and instruction that resonate with aspects of their culture and current realities. According to Thompson, Freedom School is especially effective because it is able to capture the attention of students through identification. For example, she says one of the curriculum books dealt with a child that was in the foster care system about to be separated from siblings about to be adopted. It may not be every child’s story, but it’s certainly the reality of some children. Through relevancy, the children become interested and comprehension ensues. The first two years of the program were so successful that it garnered the attention of Guilford County Schools (GCS). GCS recognized the vast improvement of certain students after they attended the summer initiative and immediately followed suit with Greensboro’s second CDF Freedom School. Freedom School does not receive any government funding, which makes it a fairly expensive program to run. Enough books must be purchased for each child (because at the end of each week, every child takes the selected book home); breakfast, lunch and a snack is provided; and certain activities require funds (students do not pay). Amazingly and through various foundations and grants the local Freedom School team and BCDI-G are able to raise the appropriate funds to make it happen. Students are only required to pay a $35 enrollment fee prior to the start of the program. Nevertheless, Freedom School is only a snapshot of the impact of BCDI-G. Since 1978, the institute has been advocating for, improving and protecting the quality of life of children, youth and families in the Greater Greensboro Community. By recruiting, screening and training a network of volunteers, the community, especially disadvantaged communities, become uplifted. Despite the name, BCDI-G happily serves all kids and families regardless of race or socioeconomic status, yet the majority of services are tailored to African American children and their families. For several years the institute has focused on literacy because overall test scores and comprehension levels have not been acceptable. Additional programs (many of which are free or drastically reduced) offered through BCDI-G include CDF Freedom School After School Program and the multi-site Spirit of Excellence Tutorial Program. Additionally there is a yearly school supply giveaway and a Black History quiz bowl. Fundraising is ongoing for BCDI-G. Programs must be directed, coordinated and facilitated. Business owners, leaders, boards, professionals, organizations and individual community members can help lighten the financial burden by recognizing the importance of BCDI-G and donating or volunteering. When budgets and personnel requirements are not met, programs will suffer and invariably become in danger of dissolution. Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro offers several ways to show support. Visit the institute’s website at www.blackchilddevelopment. org for ways to give. h

WOW! What A Drink By Tonya Dixon - Photos by Howard Gaither
“If you taste it, you will buy it.” It’s as simple as that. It’s also the motto for family owned and operated, natural beverage company, Wow! What a Drink. The consensus has come in. Almost assuredly, those who taste it, invariably purchase it. Made from real fruit and mostly water, Wow! What a Drink got its name from the reaction it always garnered once people tasted of its deliciousness. “Wow,” that’s good or “Wow” what is that? Or even Wow! How did you make that? It became so commonplace that the name stuck. During family prayer time, owners and juice connoisseurs, Erika Hendrix and Kimberly Perkins along with other family members often discussed being a food vendor at the North Carolina A&T homecoming. Discussions continued, but the family never moved forward. However in 2010, everything changed. the WOW! Team made a concerted decision that another year would not pass without the family stepping out on their desire for entrepreneurship.
Pictured are Erika Hendrix, Kimberly Perkins, Barbara Hendrix, Warren Hendrix, Brian Hendrix, Christopher Hendrix, Tracie Hendrix
To keep the ball rolling and not fall prey to procrastination, the WOW! Team applied to be vendors, selling only tea and lemonade, unlike others who sold food. Unfortunately, their application was provisionally denied. They were told unless they came up with a better idea they would surely be unsuccessful. The team’s fight and determination was spurred like never before. “He shouldn’t have told us no and that we wouldn’t be successful because a no means yes to us,” Kim says. “We didn’t know if we would make money. We just really wanted to make sure we recouped the money we put in and to prove him wrong.” The only problem was that the family barely had two months to develop and perfect flavored drinks that people would enjoy and purchase. Through lots of testing, trials, retesting and many errors in their own kitchens, WOW! What a Drink was born. The initial flavors included the still best-selling strawberry lemonade and peach tea as well as pink lemonade and regular lemonade and tea. Their determination paid off. They recouped their financial investment several times over. Within a day and a half of being at the homecoming they were completely sold out of the 20, five gallon buckets of each flavor. The next batch sold in even less time. The WOW! Team knew they had something special on their hands. From the time they launched out until the present, they have been hounded by people trying to decipher their secret recipe -- to no avail. According to Perkins, their recipes are simple with real fruit, but that’s about all she will divulge. The family is adamant about keeping their successful drinks within the family.

Staying true to their motto, the group has always been eager to let patrons try before they buy, because certainly “if you taste it, you will buy it.” WOW! What A Drink doesn’t have any artificial flavors or additives. Every drink is made from fresh fruit, most from local farms, never powdered. Each year the team attempts to roll out at least two new flavors. Following the initial flavors they introduced mango tea, passionfruit lemonade and orange pineapple lemonade. This year the desire is to develop slushies and smoothies of the same flavors as well. The WOW! Team spend a great deal of time selling the drinks at various festivals and events, particularly college campuses and outdoor events. From Georgia to Virginia, the brand is quickly developing a delicious reputation and dedicated following. The bold, bright colors of the drinks are often what catches the eyes of passersby. Once they inquire and taste a sample, as Perkins puts it, it’s a wrap. Another customer becomes a believer. Almost as quickly as the drinks can be made they are almost always sold out. The team sells different flavors for basically any event from individual cups to half gallons to five gallon buckets. While the drink hasn’t yet made it to store shelves, orders can be placed via email or the WOW! What a Drink Facebook page, which keeps patrons happy and the team busy. However, both Hendrix and Perkins admit the ultimate goal is to see their branded baby sitting on store shelves. Although the process may take some time, it’s no time they intend on wasting. They’ve already had consultations for bottling, distribution and trademarking and even a juice shop location procurement. Perkins says when they first started the venture; they would have never imagined the huge response they have received. “Even coaches are interested in the drink because they tell us it works well as an energy drink. It’s like an electrolyte because it has fruit so it’s not taking away from [the body] rather it’s adding to it.” “Because the drinks are natural we do know that they mix well together,” Hendrix says. “We even have our own version of the Arnold Palmer, only we call it ‘The Obama.” Summer months are huge for the brand. The team, which includes six adults and two children, already has several events lined up including North Carolina A&T Homecoming – where it all began. Additionally, every third Thursday patrons anxiously wait for the brand to set up shop at the Greensboro City Market. At some events, chicken and fish baskets have been successfully added to the Wow! repertoire. Nevertheless, the focus will always remain on the allnatural teas and lemonades. As the brand grows the team makes sure never to forsake giving back to and through the community that supports their efforts. Often times the group donates a percentage of their earnings to local charities such as the cancer society or the Children’s Home Society. According to the WOW! Team, the blessing is not only in the invention of the flavored drinks, but in the many doors that have been opened to a group of people who initially didn’t know what they were doing. All they knew was that they prayed for the opportunity and a path was made. Clearly, the path has been a fantastic benefit for the WOW! team as well as its satisfied customers. h

Every aspect of Bee Flawless is designed and managed with the client in mind. Shelves are always stocked with recommended products from Influance and Design Essentials. Customer wait times are consistently short and waiting areas are never crowded, loud or unkempt. It’s the little things that Garrison knows make a huge difference and could determine whether a client returns. She says she never wanted her salon to be included among the ones that people spoke negatively about. “I believe what sets this salon apart is relationship; the relationship I have with my clients as well as the relationships the other stylists have with their clients. I’ve always been personable and attentive,” Garrison says. “I try to talk to the stylists about not having long wait times and making sure to keep up with their clientele. Advertising is also important. We send monthly e-mails out that include specials, hair tips and more. Our environment is different and we don’t over book.” In addition to offering clients the ability to book online via the Bee Flawless website, Garrison uses a POS (point of sale) system for payments, record-keeping and client contact information. It’s just another aspect of the salon that makes it stand out from the crowd. While Garrison wants her clients to be satisfied and anxiously anticipate their Bee Flawless salon experience, she is also just as interested in making a profound difference in the quality of their lives. In the near future she hopes to use the salon as a springboard for a nonprofit to help cancer patients’ deal with hair loss. h

Limit Your Limitations
“Some people die at 25 but aren’t buried until 75.” – Benjamin Franklin By Kirby D. Wilson - Photos by Still Shots Photography Do you remember playing the game “That’s My Car” or “That’s My House” as a child? In this game, children compete to find the most expensive or luxurious car or home, then claim it as their own. Unfortunately, one major difference between childhood and adulthood is losing the ability to dream. I have found that adults tend to settle and lose the desire to achieve more. When children are asked what they aspire to be as adults, most desire to be a firefighter, an actress, or a doctor. There is a suspension of disbelief. However, as we age, we limit our potential by placing less value on our dreams and aspirations. Most people develop limitations because they lack vision. Vision is the ability to see beyond our present state with anticipation for future change. Lack of vision paralyzes us from moving forward. We ultimately give into our circumstances and become perpetrators of mediocre to lack luster results. If you have no vision, then you have no mobility; therefore, you are bound at your current level. Many of our limitations are self-inflicted and can be altered by simply adding value to ourselves. Creating value and esteem starts by guarding our thoughts. It requires positive self-talk with constant reassurance that we are greater than our circumstances. We must not compare ourselves to others. We have to move beyond our own limiting beliefs that were fostered by ourselves and our environment, and gain confidence that we can accomplish anything. More importantly, we add value to ourselves by adding value to others. Serving others and making a difference is the ultimate reward. Not only are we furthering the betterment and productivity of mankind, we begin to recognize our worth. Glenn Beck states, “The hardest part of the journey is believing you’re worthy of the trip.” In order to achieve success, we must perceive ourselves as already successful. It is my belief that if we are not dreaming, then we are not living. Living out our dreams allows us to limit the limitations that are placed upon us. We then become victorious over any self doubt and will transform into the person of our dreams as we change our thinking. By aligning ourselves with people and resources to aide in this process, our greater potential and value will be the reality. h Kirby Wilson is an independent business owner who teaches individuals and businesses how to turn their liabilities into assets by redirecting the revenue of essential services back into their household or business. Congratulations to our Bovanti Beauty Star Kandys Crossley Winner of the Bovanti Eye Shadow Trio Contest
Mink/Silk Lashes (Single) What it is: Mink lashes are really superior in the sense that they have this really fluffy, natural look. The mink lashes are made of hair, which they take on their own natural look. There’s basically no way for anyone to tell they’re not real. There is another alternative to Mink Lashes, which are Silk Lashes. A silk lash holds the curl but can look like mink. So we do a silk lash and use varying curls and lengths to mimic the different angles and deeper, thicker look of the mink. There are three types of lash extensions: synthetic, silk and mink. Size availability ranges from 6mm to 17mm. However at Bovanti we specialize in Silk and Mink Lashes and even mix them to create Milk. Once selected, the lashes are applied one at a time using specially formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate the eye nor damage the natural lash. However, since allergic reactions are possible, there are different types of glue based on one’s sensitivity.
Over the past few weeks we have featured our Beauty Stars and their Eyeshadow Trio creations on social media! Each palette represents a different version of Bovanti and our efforts to create distinct and custom products and know that we do it for YOU!
What it does: Eyelash extensions lengthen and thicken eyelashes with single strands of pure mink or silk eyelashes that are curved to replicate a natural eyelash. They are applied to natural eyelashes, one lash at a time, for a natural, elegant and luscious look.
Kandys created the Eye Shadow Trio named “Island Flare” Inspiration“When the 3 colors are place together they give a sunset look, which is a neutral look with a hint of color. I chose this particular color scheme because it reminds me of the sunsets where I was born which is the US Virgin Islands, St. Thomas to be exact. This allows me to share a piece of my home to my customers, hence the name “Island Flare” Everyone has a little island in them, and I’ll just show them the flare!”
What else you need to know: Applying a full set of lashes takes about two hours, and can be maintained yearround with touch-ups. Most clients come back every 3.5 to 4 weeks for a fill. Some come sooner, and then there are people who can stretch it 5-6 weeks. Every client is different. Everyone can wear Eyelash Extensions! Hollywood has long since enjoyed extending their beauty with Eyelash Extensions. Models and actors have been using eyelash extensions for years. Now, you can have them too. Because they look so real, anyone could be wearing them and you would never know! Be the first in your area to wear Eyelash Extensions because you deserve gorgeous lashes!
-Kandys Crossley How to Apply “Island Flare” 1. Using the Bovanti Tapered Blending Brush, apply the brown color to the crease of your eye. 2. Using the Bovanti Fluff Shadow Brush, apply the copper color to the lid, leaving a little space near the corner of your eye. 3. Using the Bovanti Bullet Crease Brush, apply the cream color to the corner of where you left the space. 4. Add more product to make the color brighter to get your desired look 5. Blend. Blend. FAME By Ron Smith Photos by Ron Smith
G
od bless, I have been pondering over this subject of Fame for sometime now. As I come across different artist it appears as if fame is their underlining motive. Their intentions may start off right but like a lot of us we could get sidetracked by the enemy. When I put on events, I get comments like “how many people are going to be there, or how many seats are in the building? etc. Does it really matter or is your motive for ministry about winning souls or having people cheer you on while you are on stage? That brings up another question. Are you a gospel entertainer or minister? It would make sense to achieve fame if you are an entertainer because you need your name out there to generate album sales. That is your lively hood but my problem is Jesus becomes the product you are offering to people. Thats another blog. We should all be careful with this because it is easy to get caught up in the hype and forget who we are representing Jesus Christ.
to church just for him and not for Jesus Christ. He felt that is what the Kingdom is supposed to be about Jesus Christ not a personality. So he moved to take the focus off of him. Now how many of us would do something like that with all the money coming in from 4000 people each week? That says a lot about an individual who is truly Kingdom Minded. Fame is what the devil used to tempt Jesus as well and he turned him down. (Luke 4:5-6). We must be careful and not get caught up because we can all fall to the scheme of the enemy. We must crucify this flesh daily and walk in the spirit so we do not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Matt. 7:14 Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Stay in the word of God and fame will not be a problem for you. h
When Jesus healed people he did not make a spectacle of it. Here are a couple of scriptures for reference. Matt 8:4, 16:20, Mark 7:36. If Jesus saw the importance of diverting attention away from himself and toward God, we should follow the same example. There was a true story of a pastor who had a large ministry of 4000 members. He just up and moved away with his family to another state. His reasoning was the people were coming

Mind Over Matter
Self Improvement
By Demetra Moore Photo by Demetra Moore
D
o you start your workday with dread and return home feeling the same? Are your thoughts often full of words like hate, tired, stressed and annoyed? Do you find difficulty in finding the bright spot in situations?
If this sounds like you, just know that you’re not alone. According to Dr. Shad Helmsetter, author of “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself,” 75 percent of our subconscious is negative. These emotionally, mentally and physically draining thoughts don’t have to be a part of our everyday lives. In fact, we can turn our negative outlook around by incorporating positive language into our everyday lives.
How?
Affirmations, of course. Affirmations are spoken statements that can be of a positive nature. In the popular sense of the term they are spoken commands made purposefully in order to change some aspect of our life. Incorporating these thoughts into your personal and professional lives can include stress reduction and greater self-awareness. A 2012 Harvard study found that optimistic people have healthier hearts, and affirmations help you to stay positive.
How to reap the benefits of positive thinking?
One of the most popular techniques I teach my coaching clients is the 30-day affirmations challenge. To start this challenge, make a list of what you’ve always thought of as your negative qualities. Include any criticisms others have made of you that you’ve been holding onto; whether it’s something your siblings, parents and peers used to say about you when you were a child, or what your boss told you in your last annual review.
Demetra Moore is a certified professional career coach and the founder of Moore Out of Life, Inc Now, turn your list of negatives into positive affirmations. These statements should be written in first-person, present tense. For example, saying “I’m always broke” can become “I’m learning how to better manage my finances.” Over the next 30 days, speak the affirmation out loud for several minutes three times a day - morning, mid-day and evening. Also, write these statements in a notebook, on a Post It or index card and hang them up so they’ll be visible. If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable about saying something that feels untrue and seems impossible, you can say things like “I’m learning to….” and “I’m getting better at….” Before you start affirmations be sure to have an open mind. Believe that what you are speaking is possible for you. By creating the feeling of ‘having it now’ while repeating your affirmation, you will begin to retrain your subconscious mind to think positively. The positive side of life will become more apparent and you will be able to get over daily adversity more easily. Simply said you will ultimately begin the journey to consciously creating a way to experience more out of your life. h
