By Terry L. Watson - Photos by Perfect Lenz Photography Triad Basketball Academy of Greensboro purposes itself as a cooperative community center that aspires to provide quality basketball training and skills. Its services are delivered by coaches and trainers who are motivated to assist each athlete, beginner to experienced, in fulfilling his or her potential. This is accomplished while encouraging character, sportsmanship and discipline ― things that are required to be members of the Triad Basketball Academy and help them to become productive and responsible representatives of the community at large. TBA founder Jason Keith says they focus on the skills each athlete brings to the table in an effort to best serve his/her needs for growth and development. “Beginning players will benefit from the Fundamental Training Camps offered bi-weekly and our Developing Player Programs that focus on introducing the game of basketball and skill development. Student athletes with more progressed experience and skills are also welcome to the

fundamental camps, but are strongly encouraged to enroll in small group training classes or secure one-on-one training sessions with one of our in-house trainers,” he says. While players are training, TBA of Greensboro also offers SWEAT with Alicia Aerobics every Tuesday and Thursday evening. In October of 2015, six weeks after opening their doors, the Academy was burglarized. Seven flat screen televisions and two PS4 Play Station game systems were stolen. However, with support of the community, they have recouped all of their losses. The building in which the Academy is housed has been a long-standing fixture in Greensboro and has serviced numerous programs. The floor in the building is multi-purposed but not conducive to basketball. Their goal in 2016 is to begin fund-raising in an effort to secure a wood floor. TBA of Greensboro has been successful in bringing in experienced trainers to teach their athletes specific game and life skills. The Fundamentals Camp has featured speakers after practices to speak with our kids on how to use basketball as a tool to be successful, productive

members of the community. Some of the featured speakers include Coach Sy Alexander, Men’s Head Basketball Coach at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Coach Jackie Manuel, Assistant Men’s Head Coach at University of North Carolina-Greensboro, Brian B-Daht McLaughlin of 102 Jamz; Durham County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Hart, Bam Adebayo, National High School Recruit and Harlem Globetrotter Legend. The Triad Basketball Academy of Greensboro was born out an overwhelming need for a consistent practice and training facility for Keith’s basketball organization, Team Triad Hornets. TBA of Greensboro is the central practice and training location for our AAU basketball organization which has teams ranging from 9U-14U and our newest addition, The Lady Hornets. The Lady Hornets are 14U. TBA of Greensboro will offer a Super Summer Sports Summer Camp in the summer of 2016 and Hoops-N-Homework After school Program beginning Fall of 2016.

By Martinez Hagans Photos by Martinez Hagans When I was a child I was never big or had muscles. I never played sports like football cause I was too small. I wanted to be bigger and stronger but didn’t know how. I knew that becoming a personal trainer was his calling as far back as a when he was a teenager. Weighing 120 lbs. as senior at J.B. Hunt High School, in Wilson County, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the latest issue of ‘Muscle’ magazine. I always said to myself, that someday I would be just like the great bodybuilders they profiled…Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Frank Zane Robby Roberson and Lee Haney. At that time, in my hometown - Wilson, NC - there was no gym to go to! Driving my 1967 Volkswagen, which was handed down to me, I traveled to Goldsboro and to Raleigh four days a week to train. By working as a service station attendant (a parttime job in an after school program) pumping gas and washing windshields, I could afford my gas and gym dues. My body took on amazing growth. At that point people started asking me, “What did you do to develop your body?” from there the rest is history. Now I feel like I’m living a dream, “Making my living as a personal trainer.” From being a skinny guy to becoming one of the best personal trainers in the area and a top competitor in the state of North Carolina Masters events in the National Physique Committee (NPC). I never give up. Even threw the worst of times and the good times, I never give up. Giving up for me is never an option. I express that to my clients daily. Seeing people achieve their goals is the most rewarding thing in my career. My job has never been work because I have enjoyed it every single day I head out to work. I’m 54 years old, husband, granddaddy and US Army veteran. I run my own personal training company. Of the 54 years I’ve been into fitness for over 30 years. I’m a IFBB Pro bodybuilder( international federation bodybuilding). In bodybuilding its highest status you can be rewarded. I am happily married to Jammie Devon Hagans and have two daughters.

Raleigh/Durham, Mcleansville, Winston Salem, High Point, Virginia, and South Carolina. They are currently ranked the 5th best organization in North Carolina and finished 4th best organization in 2014-2015, eventually earning a trip where they played in the AAU National Basketball Championships in Cocoa Beach, FL. SN seems to understand that kids love feeling important. Tate says he loves the fact that their kids build relationships beyond sports and learn lessons that will last a life time. “They also love the fact that they get to travel and see different parts of the United States. They love the fact that they are apart of great organization and it is growing because of them,” he says. “SN kids work in their community and in return the community supports them by coming to their games and rooting them on”.

ACADEMY SN Tate says he hopes to open up one of the best facilities in North Carolina. They’ve changed their name because they now have a chapter in South Carolina and Sanford, N.C. They’re still trying to grow to where the whole state of North Carolina would be considered SonicNation when mentioning the youth. SonicNation’s main purpose is to give kids an outreach and a better chance to better themselves by receiving scholarships to go to college. “My whole goal and vision is to have it were every kid that comes through our program has options on what they want to do with their life, whether it’s to play sports on a high level or get a academic scholarship to their college of choice. We have great support and some of the best fans and always tell everyone #WelcomeToSonicNation, a place where your childs’ dream becomes a reality,” says Tate.

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company Jerry Garner considers himself to be a professional. He always promotes and practices safety at Body By Silk, a fitness center that he owns and operates in Burlington. In the many years of his professional career as a body builder, he has never had an accident while working. Yet, there is always a first time for everything. One day he was bench pressing 405 pounds, which was his last set of his workout. Typically he wraps his elbows while bench pressing but he didn’t do it on this day. He says he noticed some tingling in his elbow during his second set of 385 pounds. “I started to wrap but figured since I only had one more set to do that I would be okay. As I was bench pressing and went up with the weights, my elbows just gave out and before I knew it, the weights just went down and landed on my chest,” he says. It all happened so fast, says Garner. He was just shocked didn’t know what happened. “I really didn’t have a chance to react initially. After it occurred, I went to the emergency room to get checked out,” he says. There he learned of the extent of his injury. Gratefully, he didn’t have to stay over night. He would eventually have surgery to repair his torn triceps and says the recovery has been very impressive. “I have a great orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Armour of Cary Orthopedics. I’m coming along real strong and I have use back in both of my arms,” says Garner. Garner advises every to listen to their body. “Your body gives you warnings. Often times, within our minds, we feel that we can do things that our body tells us that we are not ready for. Stop and reevaluate what you are about to do. It can save yourself a whole lot of pain and discomfort,” says Garner.

“Jerry was injured when dropped nearly 405 pounds of weight on his chest. This happened when the muscles in both of his arms collapsed and blew out. He says that is a blessing that he is alive and did not injure himself more severely.”

Greensboro

Street Ballers “Kenneth Slade works to preserve and rebuild his neighborhood and basketball court”

20

SPUNQ SPORTS

JANUARY 2016

By Terry L. Watson Photos by Mykel Media Company Kenneth Slade of Greensboro has exhibited a real passion about maintaining the upkeep in his community. He has a heart for basketball and his love for the sport has poured outside of the perimeters of the court and onto greater things. In 2015, he founded the Greensboro Street Ballers Association. This was during the time when the City of Greensboro was taking down basket ball goals at parks throughout the city as a means to deter loitering and after dark traffic. As a result, many dedicated ball players had to find other places to play. The GSA provided this alternative. Soon after that Kenneth sought out to refurbish Hampton Park located at 3111 Four Season Boulevard in Greensboro.

One of the challenges Kenneth Slade faced was a huge sink hole that lay beneath the basketball court. When it was dug up, they found debris and rotted wooed that had been wrongfully discarded years earlier. This was the source and cause of the sink hole.

GSA offers camps and tournaments throughout the summer months, to help with skill development. Kenneth says that he loves an association that can provide an outlet for so many people to have fun while competing on a high volume level.

The park was in bad shape and the court cracks and even a sink hole one end of the court. This prevented players from using the whole length of the court. Turns our the cause of the sink hole was the result of debris and rotted wood buried beneath the court. He was able to convince the city to dig up the problem and using his own money along with financial assistance from other places, Hampton park was brought back to life. Today, the park has a state of the sport court, which was sponsored by ESPN and Jim Barbee. Now kids in the city have a place to play of which they can call home. Stop by today and get your game on today with the Greensboro Street Baller Association.

Held at Wesleyan Christian Academy with no less than twenty five local youth all ranging between the age of eight to eighteen. The event started just as the youth have come to expect. With a brief introduction, then it was off into groups to run drills and learn different techniques but also to recap and pick up on skills from previous events. These recaps help to hone the youths skills and aid them in becoming more advanced in their training.
