Since the birth of the Gate City Grizzlies, the organization has received tremendous support from parents who are devoted and dedicated to the program and the rigorous basketball schedule. The founders realized during recruitment and outreach that there were more parents wanting to get their children active in sports in a structured environment. The demand for a well-organized team is highly needed in the community. Throughout this entire process, the team stays motivated through the support of the parents, the enthusiasm and the positive feedback of the community and the players. In the future, the Gate City Grizzlies is looking to offer an AAU organization that is not only about basketball but growing together as a unit and family. They are committed to serving the community as well March/April 2016

as developing valuable young men. Their goal is to have their athletes presented with unlimited opportunities for the next level in their sports careers such as scholarships for basketball or academically. If anyone is interested in supporting the Gate City Grizzlies, the team is looking for contributions to offset the expenses to participate in ongoing tournaments. They are also looking for people in the community to come out to tournament games to support the team.

HayesTaylor YMCA Sportsman of TheYear By Terry L Watson - Photos by Mykel Media Company, LLC Pernell Edwards is a full time student who proudly boasts a GPA of 3.66. He is also a full time dad, mentor and coach to two co-ed adult kickball and softball teams, and still finds the time to volunteer at the Hayes Taylor Memorial YMCA. At Hayes Taylor he coaches basketball and flag football for ages (8-9) and has been named as their Sportsman of The Year. Being named Sportsman of the Year has really pushed Pernell to develop the kids that he comes in contact with even more. “They saw something in me that made them want to give me this award. I just want to make sure I return the favor to Hayes Taylor by being the best volunteer that I can be, best mentor and coach that I can be, and fulfill whatever need that may be there,” he says. He started coaching nearly five years ago throughout Greensboro. The co-ed teams that he coaches, Elite Cleats and Smokin’ Aces competes against other city teams around Greensboro for a chance to play for a championship. Just last spring, the Elite Cleats (kickball) finished as regular season champs and ended their season with a record of (11-1) only to lose in the championship game. In 2014, the Smokin’ Aces (softball) fell a game short of the championship, losing in the semifinals. “Guess you can say coaching is in my blood. I just love trying to put together winning teams that I am proud to be a part of,” he says. Edwards loves being able to help kids develop and prepare them for when they get older and began to play competitively. “It brings me joy to see what I taught a kid in practice and they actually go out there and do it come game time. To see the kids face light up once they score a basket for the first time, or score a touchdown for the first time, there’s no greater joy than that,” says Edwards.

He also runs indoor and outdoor track and after graduating this spring, the young and gifted athlete will be taking his talents to Harvard University, where he will play football on a full athletic scholarship. Kelly loves playing sports because they bring people together. “I love the competition, the winning, and the brotherhood that I have with my teammates which have become lifelong friends,” he says. In addition to playing sports and reaching academic goals that he has set for himself, the AP scholar also works part time at Champs sports and attends Greensboro Day Star Church. He is also the president of Men of Destiny club at Southeast Guilford which mentors at risk youth. He has received offers from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Davidson, and Cornell universities for football. He also had the opportunity to walk on at Duke University and Wake Forest. In the classroom, Kelly maintains a 4.25 GPA, and has taken five AP classes throughout high school while successfully making the A/B honor roll. He received Honorable Mention for All-Conference 2014/2015 and Honorable mention All Area for 2015. He has also faced challenges. He had two surgeries while playing sports. He suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee as a sophomore. Had it repaired only to have it tear again after his junior season. At that point he had it removed in June 2015. Kelly started playing football in 8th grade but got hurt so he really didn’t play until high school. The 9th grade was a learning year and he didn’t play much because no one knew of him. He began on junior varsity as a sophomore for two games then tore his meniscus during the bye week. He was out for the rest of the season and worked hard during the offseason, to come back and become the starting cornerback as a Junior. Then he tore it again in the offseason. Kelly had it removed before the start of his senior year and came back even better than before.
“I love the competition, the winning, and the brotherhood that I have with my teammates which have become lifelong friends”.
Kelly describes himself as humble, hardworking and a natural leader. He perseveres through challenges because of his relationship with God. “Family is very important to me. I’m not ashamed of being a momma’s boy, because I have a great relationship with my mom,” he says.

Q A
What do you love most about playing football and being an athlete? What I love most about football is that I get to go out there with my brothers and just basically hit people. I love it. What I love most about being an athlete is just getting to say I am a football player.
Q A
What are some of his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom? Varsity Letterman (at Southeast, Webb, and Western Alamance), All Conference Academic – Track (2015), All Region – Football (2015). Getting all region for the first time that really meant a lot to me because I worked hard for it and I finally got it.
In the classroom I rose to the rank of Lieutenant in Army ROTC at Webb High School, regularly achieving A/B Honor Roll.
Q Who or what has impacted his life the most? A I’ll have to say my parents impacted me the most because they been their ever since I first started playing football and believed in me non-stop. For example, they never miss any of my games (at least one is there or both) and looking up in the stands seeing them lets me I know my game will be great. March/April 2016

Who We Are
The art of Karate was developed in Okinawa and brought over to the mainlands in the 20th century. The characters (空手) translate to mean empty hand. Karate is a striking art that implements the use of kicking, knee strikes, punching, elbows and open other hand techniques. Our style focuses on Kihon (basics), Kata (forms) and Kumite (fighting). We are the full contact karate school in Raleigh North Carolina. Full contact simply indicates that we are a fighting school. Sparring is not a sometimes thing, rather it is an essential part of our training curriculum. All techniques practiced are under the guidance of trained instructor and control taught. There is no better way to test out the effectiveness of technique other than to just do it. Our style is based off the teachings of “Grandmaster” Soshu Shigeru Oyama and his top instructors. Our classes are designed to help one improve their self-esteem and self control. We believe that what we practice in the dojo applies to real life scenarios. Through Karate one can acquire skills and knowledge to mediate conflicts. Students of all ages can expect to have increased problem solving skills, increased leadership skills, respect for others and their communities

We have seen many of our children demonstrate increased focus and concentration which has carried over into their academics. We have had an increase in impulsive behaviors and an increase in the ability to mediate conflicts effectively. Through Karate our children have demonstrated increased coordination and development of their fine and gross motor skills. No matter what age, through karate each individual learns the importance of practice and persistence to reach their personal goals What To Expect Each of our classes begin and end with meditation (Mokuso). It is during this time the student learns to clear their mind and focus on training. At the end of class, it also affords students the opportunity to reflect on their training prior to going back to their regular routine. Once the class begins, we start with stretching. Stretching Stretching is essential in physical exercise; done to prevent injuries and to improve overall karate technique. Stretching is done at the beginning and end of each class. It is also encouraged that students stretch on a daily basis when not attending class. Geiko This term refers to training in the basics, or the foundations of karate. Kihon Geiko incorporates traditional karate stances with the fundamentals of punching and kicking techniques. Ido Geiko This is Kihon Geiko put in motion. Students learn to bring together the footwork and striking techniques learned from basics. Kata This term refers to karate forms; sequences of movements that help the student combine various karate techniques. Kata help the student acquire body control, teaching the student movements that change body speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. Knowing when to use strength, when to relax, timing, when to execute the proper technique and breathing to control strength and stamina. Katas are also practiced with various traditional weapons. Yakusoku Kumite This term refers to the practicing of prearranged fighting techniques. One student might attack while the other blocks, or there might be an exchange of attacks and defenses. In Yakusoku Kumite, each student knows what he or she will do and what his or her partner will do. Jissen Kumite Full contact fighting Here students practice sparring and learn how to fight and defend themselves. In kumite, students get the chance to create their own combinations or techniques and develop their own style of fighting. Fighting is controlled. Physical Fitness All aspects of our training focus on becoming physically fit. The classes are challenging, yet people from every skill level can participate to their skill level. It is not unusual for our classes to have some non-karate exercises such as burpees, sit-ups, pushups, squats, interval training and other exercises.

Protect Your Skull The Game Has Evolved 22

“For the love of the game”…is what most athletes will tell you when asked why they play the sport of their choice. However, you will never hear an athlete talk about the risks of sports and how important it is to protect yourself, especially your skull. However, things are changing and Foster Wilkins and Tracey Suggs, former football players are raising awareness about athletes protecting their selves from concussions through their brand, Protect Your Skull, LLC. In June 2011, Wilkins and Suggs started their company as co-owners to change people’s minds about safety and awareness in sports. They both played various sports growing up and in college they both played football at Fayetteville State University. The two agree that they played in an era of sports when the equipment wasn’t good enough and athletes endured a lot of concussions, including their selves. Through the evolution of sports, they have seen many changes and it’s more important now than ever that athletes play safer and smarter to ensure a better quality of life after the game. Protect Your Skull has developed a business model similar to Under Armour and their current product line consist of t-shirts, hats, wristbands, tank tops, athletic gear and jerseys’. Their goal as a company is to heighten awareness through their brand offerings. Through their company they have given back significantly to various sports teams. In 2015, they presented scholarships at the CIAA to Winston-Salem State University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, St. Augustine University and Fayetteville State University for new helmets. They have raised funds for The Derek Sheely Foundation and the McDougal Fund. Wilkins and Suggs both believe if they can change a life, they can save a life by educating young people about protecting their skull. It has definitely kept them motivated by giving back and promoting safety. Even though at times, it’s hard to change people’s mindsets about the quality of life on the field and off the field. However, they are still committed to helping wherever they can to get their message across to the masses. In the future, they plan to bring in new partners to amplify their message and continue working with summer and sports camps.
