Blue - Green Infrastructure, Saudi Arabia
Award Submission - Infrastructure Category (Snippet)
Riyadh is considered the financial and administrative hub of the Saudi Arabia kingdom. Its vast urban densification, while beneficial for economic growth, has led to rapid urban sprawl. Impermeable surfaces, poor stormwater management, and seasonal heavy rains lead to flooding, which harms the ecological and socioeconomic environment.
In the past, the city's urban layout functioned as a sustainable ecosystem, connected to its natural features like wadis, parks, and farmlands. Unfortunately, these distinctive characteristics, which defined the city's identity, have gradually disappeared. Any remaining small open spaces within neighbourhoods are often neglected and aren't integrated into a broader network of the city.
Despite being a natural boundary and dividing element between the inner city and west urban areas, the development of the wadi as a citywide network of open spaces, holds an opportunity to unify the city, restore ecological harmony, and improve quality of life. Company A's blue-green infrastructure (BGI) project is a direct response to the Project Name’s Comprehensive Development Plan, overseen by the Project’s Governing body, which outlined the environmental restoration of the wadi corridor and the extensive reinvestment in Riyadh's public open spaces. The integrated open space network aims to protect, improve, and relink BGI along Project Name as a nature-based water management solution. It will be preserved and managed as a local and regional park, offering cultural, leisure, and recreation opportunities within a natural environment...
...The restoration of Project Name reconnects the Location Capital to its selfidentity and restores pride to its once gentrified neighbourhoods The Quality-oflife objective of the Saudi Vision 2030, will integrate the Project Name into a modern linear park that will interface with the 135 km Sports Boulevard project through a network of pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting a healthy lifestyle. A coordinated network of streets was designed to prioritise flexibility and adapt to various functions such as visitor management, vehicular traffic, and parking, especially during Formula E events which host over 100,000 visitors. Landscape facilitation for these events includes use of movable elements in the highway medians and elsewhere that can be stored offsite, allowing for installation of temporary crowd management and hosting facilities...

Future Landscape and Playspaces Conference
Press Release
Omar Aridi represented Cracknell's Dubai studio in a panel discussion at the Future Landscape and Playspaces Conference on March 5, 2024 The panel explored iconic landscape projects that have influenced Dubai, focusing on how landmark green spaces shape the city's identity and tourism while addressing the challenges associated with their creation and maintenance.
The discussion highlighted several principles for designers to consider in developing transformative landscapes:
Ecological Sustainability: Designers must balance aesthetic appeal with ecological sustainability Each design should not only be visually pleasing but also support the regional and local environment.
Effective Resource Management: Successful projects require careful monitoring of water and energy use. Materials should be evaluated based on their manufacturing process, transportation, raw components, and recyclability to ensure the reuse of materials and structures, thereby extending the longevity of public spaces
Climate Change Adaptation: Landscape architects should design resilient landscapes and playspaces that effectively respond to climate change.
Urban Connectivity: As urbanization pressures green areas, leading to encroachment and fragmentation, designers must prioritize the creation of a network of green infrastructure within Dubai’s city and future developments.
Sustainable Landscape Maintenance: Enhancing the skill level of maintenance teams is crucial. Landscape architects should develop management guidelines that emphasize choices impacting both the commercial and ecological value of green spaces over the long term This will help maintenance teams preserve the beauty and ecological integrity of these areas.
The panel highlighted that vibrant, resilient green spaces in Dubai require collaboration among developers, municipalities, designers, stakeholders, and the community. Developers fund and integrate these spaces, municipalities manage regulations and upkeep, and designers create functional, attractive landscapes. Stakeholders influence priorities and resource allocation, while community input ensures the spaces meet local needs and foster ownership. This collaborative approach ensures green spaces are sustainable, enhance city identity, and effectively serve the public.
