Burgundy 2019 – An Unsurpassed Vintage The 2019 vintage in Burgundy against all odds proved to be a delight. What is certain is that the wines are exceptional, this is a brilliant vintage for the region, a triumphant year. The early frosts across France saw producers lose much of their volume. Yields down by up to 60% not uncommon. Whilst in larger regions, with sustainably larger vineyard sizes, this yield reduction presented a challenge, it was exaggerated in Burgundy where the general size of each parcel is already incredibly small. Production that might have been one or two barrels, now a half, and if lucky, one barrel. With quality very high, the disastrous conditions lie with the market. Alongside smaller yields, resulting in restricted allocations, is an insatiable thirst for these great wines. Combine this with interest from newer emerging markets, and allocations from the 2019 vintage are tough to secure.

‘Fighting frost in Burgundy’

We are though once again very proud to offer a smart collection of wines from the 2019 vintage, all from long standing relationships. Whilst the range we have is in fact one of our broadest, the quantities available are very small. You will find online those that are (relatively) readily available. In the offer you will find those that are scarce. For the rarities, please contact us via finewine@glengarry.co.nz with the details of the wines you are interested in. Domaine Michel Gros is not included in this offer. The wines from this Domaine are due into New Zealand in July and will be offered when they arrive. On the following pages you will find the details of the wines together with the critic reviews. This is a year that has been praised from all corners. James Suckling wrote: “Burgundy hit’s the bullseye with the 2019 vintage” Writing for Decanter, Charles Curtis MW says “2019 is a hedonistic vintage that will take its place alongside other exceptional recent years in Burgundy. He found many wines offered an outstanding balance of intense fruit, firm structure and supple texture and recommends seeking top-quality producers working in relatively cool spots to buy with confidence.” William Kelly for the Wine Advocate writes about “a thrilling year for Pinot Noir, delivering wines bursting with head-turning perfume and fresh, succulent fruit… simultaneously serious and immensely charming”. Going on to reference vintages that share similarities being: 2012, 2017, 2015 and 1989s.

Domaine Michel Gros The Gros family’s winemaking dynasty began in 1830 when 26-year-old Alphonse Gros set up in the famous Burgundian commune of Vosne-Romanée. Six generations on, the properties have been divided up amongst family members, and there are now four separate Gros domaines. Today Michel Gros heads up his own, consisting of his Clos des Réas (Premier Cru) property, along with excellent parcels in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny and the Bourgogne appellations. The vineyards are meticulously managed on a low-yield regime, with all fruit hand harvested and traditionally fermented using cultured yeasts, which Michel believes provide greater finesse. His attention to detail has been rewarded with numerous accolades, including Best Winemaker and Best Pinot Noir at London’s famed International Wine Challenge, two years in a row.

GROS MICHEL AU VALLON HAUTES COTES DE NUITS

2019

Retail $58.99

A top note of menthol is present on the spicier aromas. This is aromatically similar to the straight Hautes Cotes cuvee with perhaps just a bit more layering. There is however a noticeable difference on the palate as the medium weight flavors are both sleeker and finer with a beguiling intensity to the more mineral-driven finish where again a hint of warmth gradually emerges. This is very good and worthy of your interest plus it should repay 3 to 5 years of cellaring.

43192

GROS MICHEL BOURGOGNE HAUTS COTE DE NUITS

2019

$54.99

Slightly more elegant and cooler aromas speak of essence of red currant with discreet spice nuances. The pure, racy and lightly stony flavors possess a more refined texture along with solid depth and persistence on the mildly rustic finish that also displays a hint of warmth.

41064

GROS MICHEL BOURGOGNE ROUGE

2019

$50.99

A fresh and distinctly earthy nose is composed primarily by various dark berry scents. The supple, round and delicious flavours possess both good cut and energy before concluding in a persistent if mildly tangy finish that stops just short of dryness though this may well dissipate before the wine is bottled. 85-88 BH

41109

GROS MICHEL CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

2019

$152.99

89-91/100 | Burghound: "Ripe, elegant and attractively fresh aromas feature notes of plum, dark currant, anise and floral hints. There is a lovely minerality and energy to the utterly delicious middle weight flavors that possess the natural elegance of a fine Chambolle, all wrapped in a beautifully complex, balanced and persistent finish. This is an excellent Chambolle villages that is worth checking out." - Allen Meadows

41402

GROS MICHEL CLOS VOUGEOT

2019

$377.99

The 20 ares of clos of the estate produced only 600 bottles in 2019. A beautiful grand cru with a purplish color, fruity, toasted aromas. The wine is still firm, but full, deep, harmonious, promising.

48315

GROS MICHEL FONTAINE SAINT MARTIN BLANC

2019

$62.99

Notes of citrus, petrol and straw are trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. The round, delicious and attractively vibrant flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the clean and moderately dry finish. This is a relatively dense wine in the context of what is typical for the Hautes Côtes and should drink well shortly after release.

GROS MICHEL FONTAINE SAINT MARTIN ROUGE

2019

Retail $62.99

Discreet wood influence is present on the more deeply pitched aromas of plum, spice and various dark berry scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess excellent volume with more evident power and punch on the moderately rustic and sneaky long finish. This is a big and rather serious wine by the standards of the appellation and in contrast to most wines from the Hautes Côtes, it will need at least a few years of patience. Excellent

41391

GROS MICHEL GEVREY CHAMBERTAIN LA PLATIERE

2019

$119.99

Moderate wood sets off equally ripe is not quite as fresh aromas of black currant, plum, raspberry and prominent earth. The succulent and nicely vibrant medium-bodied flavours are both seductive and suave, all wrapped in a saline-inflected finale that exhibits only a touch of rusticity.

43181

GROS MICHEL MOREY SAINT DENIS EN LA RUE DE VERGY

2019

$119.99

87-90/100 | Burghound: "The highly expressive nose consists of notes of wood toast and menthol along with cool red currant and violet scents. Here too there is an attractive mouth feel to the precise and even stonier middle weight flavors that possess a dusty, balanced and utterly delicious finish." - Allen Meadows

41066

GROS MICHEL NUITS ST GEORGE LES CHALIOTS

2019

$115.99

88-90/100 | Robert Parker: "The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges les Chaliots had just finished its malolactic and was about to be racked. Matured in 50% new oak, the nose was too difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins: quite fresh and perhaps lighter than how the village cru will eventually turn out. But it is imbued with a touch more finesse on the finish, more class and a dash more energy." - Neal Martin

41113

GROS MICHEL NUITS ST GEORGES

2019

$111.99

Here the nose is firmly reduced though the underlying fruit does seem ripe. There is fine punch, midpalate density and delineation to the medium weight flavours that offer good richness as well as fine length on the moderately firm, dusty and lingering finish that is only mildly rustic.

43184

GROS MICHEL NUITS ST GEORGES 1ER CRU

2019

$189.99

89-92/100 | Burghound: "Here the wood influence is less prominent on the nose though hardly invisible with plenty of Nuits style earth and underbrush nuances adding breadth to the ripe and plummy aromas. The wood though reappears on the palate and while the flavours themselves possess a silky mouth feel, the wood tannins are sufficient to impart a mildly drying sensation to the finish. There is fine density and this will very likely eat its wood but unlike several other wines where it seems relatively clear that they will successfully integrate their wood treatments, I’m less certain in this case." - Allen Meadows

41104

GROS MICHEL VOSNE ROMANEE

2019

$152.99

88-91/100 | Burghound: "There is enough reduction present to render an evaluation of the nose challenging. By contrast there is good freshness to the rich, generous and precise medium weight flavors that offer a velvety mouth feel before culminating in a harmonious and vibrant finale that offers good depth and very fine length." - Allen Meadows

41103

GROS MICHEL VOSNE ROMANEE 1ER CRU AUX BRULEES

2019

$242.99

91-93/100 | Burghound: "Generous but not dominant wood tussles somewhat with the spiced plum liqueur, Asian-style tea and violet-scented nose. There is a wonderfully seductive mouth feel to the rich, velvety and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract and minerality on the lingering finale where the firm tannic spine arrives in a rush. In contrast to the Nuits 1er, this moderately muscular effort is less likely to make for a good early drinker." - Allen Meadows

This will probably be accessible on the younger side as most vintages of Clos des Réas generally are." - Allen Meadows

UNDERSTANDING BURGUNDY Burgundy is the narrowest and longest wine region in France, but one of the smallest, most fragmented and difficult to understand. With more than 1,000 names and over 100 appellations it’s easy to see why. To understand the fragmentation, one must look at the past briefly. Once Burgundy was owned almost entirely by the church, until 1789 when the French Revolution took place. During this vineyards were seized and broken up and given to families to farm. French Inheritance laws have further fragmented these vineyards. When it comes to the grapes grown in Burgundy, things get a little simpler. There are only three main grapes grown in Burgundy. Pinot Noir for red wine, Chardonnay for the white and Gamay for Beaujolais. There are various levels of quality in Burgundy. At the top is Grand Cru. Next is Premier Cru, followed by wine from a specific Village and then Burgundy generic appellations. Burgundy can be divided into three distinct areas: 1. CHABLIS: The northern most and closest to Paris is Chablis. The only grape allowed to be planted here is Chardonnay because the soil is made up of chalk, decomposing oyster shells and the fact that it is very cold and could not reliably ripen Pinot Noir. 2. CÔTE D’OR: the heart of Burgundy – which is then further divided into; a. Côte de Nuits: Quite literally home to the world’s most expensive vineyards and wines. Virtually all Pinot Noir because of the soil being heavier and more clay based. b. Côte de Beaune: The lower part of Burgundy central is dominated by Chardonnay and is the home to the most expensive Chardonnays in the world from the village of Puligny Montrachet. 3. BEAUJOLAIS: a huge region that produces vastly more wine than the 3 other areas combined. The only grape really planted here is Gamay. CÔTE DE NUITS

The following are the main villages in the Côte de Nuits; GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

In this village the vineyards are on gentle slopes with layers of pebbles on the top. The wines from Gevrey show red berry characters when young and game characters in the richer wines, as they develop they tend to have more licorice characters. Grand Cru’s are Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Chapelle, Chambertin, GriotteChambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. MOREY-ST-DENIS

Not as well known as the other villages in the Côte de Nuits, located between Gevrey and Chambolle, the vineyards in Morey-St-Denis have a good free draining gradient and a base of limestone. Morey-St-Denis is home to the Grand Cru vineyards of Clos de la Roche, Bonnes Mares, Clos de Tart, Clos St-Denis and Clos des Lambrays. CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

Wines from Chambolle Musigny are one of the most delicate in Burgundy, they display fragrant fruit and finesse. The light soil and varying gradients of the village create this delicacy and the complexity of these wines. Grand Cru’s are Bonnes Mares and Musigny. VOUGEOT

This village is home to one Grand Cru – Clos de Vougeot which covers more than four-fifths of the area under vines here. Clos de Vougeot wines are rich and generous yet not overpowering. VOSNE ROMANÉE

Home to the most expensive wines in Burgundy, the village of Vosne Romanée is home to the Grand Crus – Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Romanée-St-Vivant, Richebourg and La Grande Rue and home to some of the best domains including Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The Grand Cru’s of Grands Échézeaux and Échézeaux are located next door in Flagey Échézeaux.

UNDERSTANDING BURGUNDY NUITS ST GEORGES

The town of Nuits added the name of its finest vineyard - Les Saint Georges - in the 19th century. There are no Grand Cru in the village of Nuits St Georges, but a host of very good Premier Cru. A FEW MORE FACTS:

Generic wines are labelled as Burgundy or Bourgogne. In total there are more than 400 Premier Crus vineyards in Burgundy. There are 32 Grand Crus Vineyards in total – 8 white Grand Crus, 24 red Grand Crus. Of these 24 are from the Côte de Nuits and 8 from the Côte de Beaune. The largest red Grand Cru in Burgundy is Corton, this Grand Cru represents about 25% of Grand Cru Red wines by volume. It’s very important to know your vintages when you purchase Burgundy. 2010 is an excellent vintage. Recently – 1996, 1997 and 2002 are all very good vintages, while 1999, 2005 and 2009 were excellent vintages. Unlike Bordeaux, it is more likely that Domaines change hands, personnel change and the quality can improve in a short period of time, so it’s often prudent to read as many reviews as possible to get a sense of the quality level they are producing in the current vintage.

CÔTE DE BEAUNE

The following are the main villages in the Côte de Beaune: ALOXE-CORTON

Home to the Grand Cru, Corton, both red and white Corton can be produced. Red wine from Aloxe-Corton is one of the most powerful and tannic in the area and needs time to develop. BEAUNE

This village is more known as the centre of Burgundy, where you’d likely stay when visiting the area, than for it’s wines. There are however some good Premier Crus in this area. VOLNAY

As with Pommard, there are no Grand Cru, but a host of Premier Crus, the wines from Volnay are fragrant, elegant and age very well. POMMARD

There are no Grand Cru in Pommard – although Grand Clos des Épenots would be a definite candidate if the Grand Cru classifications were ever reviewed; wines from this Premier Cru show finesse, character and the ability to age gracefully. Wines from Pommard definitely demand age, when young the tannins are very tight, as they age the power and richness in the wine develops.

Domaine Anne Gros Vinous – Neal Martin: “Anne Gros herself was taking a well-earned post-harvest rest when I visited, though that is no problem these days as her daughter, Julie, is taking an increasingly prominent role in the running of the domaine in Vosne-Romanée. “There was a lower crop than in 2018,” she explained between darting from one stainless steel vat to another. “Each year we buy 30 new barrels. The normal total production would be around 120 barrels but in 2019 we had 100 barrels, then 80 barrels in 2020. We started picking on 17 September with the Bourgogne Rouge followed by the Grand Crus, the reds before the whites. All the wines are aged in around one-third new oak with all cuvées entirely de-stemmed. They will be bottled in December.” This is always a small portfolio crowned by their holding in Richebourg, though in 2019 the pair that caught my eye were an excellent Echézeaux that overtook the Clos Vougeot in its slipstream, also an over-performing Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux that could pass as a Premier Cru. Occasionally I wanted a little more density and grip, though that is not their style these days.” Burghound: Producer note: Anne Gros' daughter Julie is progressively assuming more and more responsibility for the day to day operations and she is the one with whom I did this year's tasting. Her brief take on the 2019 vintage is that "we picked from the 17th of September and brought in ripe and clean fruit, just not very much of it. The vinifications were straightforward and we have encountered no difficulties during the élevage either. They are of course ripe but surprisingly fresh given how hot and dry the summer was and should be wines that are approachable young but have no problem aging well either."

Domaine Anne Gros The Gros family have been making excellent wine in the famous Burgundian commune of Vosne-Romanée since 1830, when Alphonse Gros married Madame Latour and acquired his first parcels of vines there. There were various divisions of the land until the latest generation took over in the mid nineties. Today Anne and her cousins Michel Michel Gros) and Bernard (Gros Frere et Souer) are neighbours in the village of Vosne-Romanée, but their wine styles are very different. Until 1994, Anne labelled her wines under Domaine Anne and Françoise Gros (her father’s name). Her vineyard holdings are very small, but they include the jewel in her collection: 0.6 hectares of Richebourg, first planted in around 1930.She has quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest and most sought after producers in Burgundy.

DOMAINE ANNE GROS BOURGOGNE BLANC CHARDONNAY

2019

Retail $74.99

83/100 | Burghound: "Here too the nose is reduced but in this case, it seems clear that the fruit is ripe. There is good mid-palate fat to the reasonably intense middle weight flavors that are supported by citrus-tinged acidity on the rustic but delicious finale that is also noticeably saline in character."

43125

DOMAINE ANNE GROS BOURGOGNE HAUTES-COTES DE NUITS ROUGE

2019

$74.99

86-98 | Burghound: "A pretty, fresh and ripe combination offers up mostly dark berry fruit laced with discreet spice and earth nuances where the latter element is picked up by the acceptably concentrated flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the lightly rustic and sneaky long finish. This is actually quite good for its level and a wine that would make a decent choice for an easy-going and forward house red." Rated: Outstanding

DOMAINE ANNE GROS BOURGOGNE ROUGE

2019

$74.99

86-89 | Burghound: "A slightly riper nose possesses a bit more spiciness on the earthier black pinot and cherry-scented aromas. The succulent, round and delicious middle weight flavors possess better density on the slightly more rustic and structured finale. This too is quite good for its level and would also make a quality choice for a slightly more serious house red that could be enjoyed young or cellared for 2 to 3 years if desired."

DOMAINE ANNE GROS CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY LA COMBE D'ORVEAU

2019

$179.00

88-90 | Burgound: "Fresh and slightly more elegant aromas are comprised by notes of redder fruit and more evident spice elements. The delicious and lilting middle weight flavors display good delineation and a more sophisticated texture on the lightly stony finale that offers good if not really distinguished depth and persistence."

43136

DOMAINE ANNE GROS CLOS-VOUGEOT LE GRAND MAUPERTUI GRAND CRU

2019

$436.00

93-93 | Vinous: "The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet, maybe a little more compact than the Echezeaux. The grippy palate is medium-bodied and muscular compared to the Echezeaux, with dark berry fruit, touches of pain d’epices and a slightly savory finish. This will need time." 91-93 | Burghound: " Slightly more evident wood frames more deeply pitched aromas of poached plum, cassis and warm earth along with spicy top notes. There is both good richness and vibrancy to the bigger-bodied and more muscular flavors that display focused power on the youthfully austere, complex and more structured finale. This offers outstanding length and is a wine that should also repay extended keeping."

93-95/100 | Vinous :"The 2019 Echezeaux Grand Cru, matured in one-third new oak, has a welldefined bouquet of slightly broody dark berry fruit plus touches of sousbois and potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with structure and grip. Good intensity and substance here. Notes of tobacco and allspice appear on the finish. A superb Echezeaux from Anne and Julie Gros." 90-93/100 | Burghound: "This too is exceptionally spicy with lovely floral elements adding a touch of elegance to the aromas of black cherry and jasmine tea that are trimmed in just enough wood to remark upon. There is noticeably better mid-palate density to the seductive, complex and solidly powerful flavors that delivers fine depth and persistence on a moderately structured finale. This promising effort should repay mid to longer-term cellaring." Note: from a .76 ha parcel, which is about 30% of the total climat

DOMAINE ANNE GROS RICHEBOURG GRAND CRU

2019

$1198.00

91-94/100 | Burghound: "This is easily the most floral-suffused wine in the range with its notes of violet, lavender and rose petal on the highly spiced array of red berry aromas. There is lovely underlying tension to the more mineral-inflected if not especially dense flavors that also deliver focused power and fine length on the austere and nicely complex finale. This is perhaps a bit light compared to a classically styled Riche, but it certainly is classy and may well add body with time in bottle as the structure is present to allow it to age well over the next two decades." Domaine Jean Chartron

Jean-Michel on 2019: “2019 was complicated because we had a little frost, more than we were hit in 2016 – sometimes as low as 30% of a normal harvest. Then we had hot weather some nights with 25° yet we still seem to have good freshness – I’m happy with the wines but not the quantity.” Neal Martin – Vinous – Producer Note: I associate Puligny-Montrachet with Jean-Michel Chartron’s beaming smile. In the many years that I have been acquainted with him, Chartron has been one of the most important figures in Puligny, serving as president of the syndicate of growers as well as the committee that administrates solely for the Grand Crus. Fortunately, these duties have not dragged him away from the most important task – creating excellent wines at Domaine Chartron. “We had one big frost on 6 or 7 April despite the fact that we lit bales of straw. I didn’t have candles in 2019 though I’ve bought them now. This made a smoke screen, but we had a shower the previous night, so it was very humid. The temperature wasn’t too low. The lowest was around -4.5°C in Chassagne. But we still suffered damage, which was not the case in 2020 when it was much drier. It was chilly during the flowering with a bit of rain at the beginning. The summer was warm with some storms with very localized hail, though there was no damage. There were heat spikes up to 42°C with only minor grillure as we do not effeuillage [de-leafing]. We started picking on 5 September for the Crémant de Bourgogne and finished on 19 September in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. The berries had about 4.5g/l tartaric acid, which is about normal, whilst alcohol levels are higher than normal, between 13.5° and 14.0° except the Corton-Charlemagne at 14.5%. Most of the Village Crus were aged in 25% new oak and for the Premier Crus, around 30%. There is roughly half the production this year. Most of the whites Premier Crus have been racked from barrel into tank.” Chartron oversees an impressive portfolio of Premier Crus including monopoles such as Clos de Chevaliers and anomalies such as his Puligny-Montrachet Rouge. Alas he only ended up with a few litres of Montrachet this year - just one feuillette). I admire Chartron’s style of winemaking. His wines are nervy and minimalist in their youth, quintessential Puligny-Montrachet with malic notes at their core, despite 2019’s warmth. Standout is Chartron’s exceptional Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret that comes strongly recommended and at the lower end I was smitten by the pretty Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc. Chartron’s wines remain reasonably priced in the scheme of things and are well worth seeking out.

Domaine Jean Chartron Established 1859 in Puligny by the cooper-craftsman, Jean-Edouard Dupard, the Domaine has been governed by our generations, focused on both the prosperity and the expansion of the prestigious vineyards. The village owes its name to Jean-Edouard Dupard, when in 1873 as mayor of Puligny, he asked the local council to authorise that the name Montrachet - the most prestigious local vineyard - be added to that of Puligny, the original name of the village. Jean-Rene Chartron, the 4th generation, is without doubt the one who brought the most to the Domaine, making wines of the highest quality. Today, it is his son, Jean-Michel Chartron, who holds the reins and is now taking it to even greater levels. These are exceptional white Burgundies.

93-96 /100 Jasper Morris MW “Three barrels of domaine fruit and one purchased, not racked yet. Pale lemon colour. Quite a discreet nose though with a sense of some power behind. Certainly builds to the back, and delivers a punch to finish. Very good tension and power. Tasted: October 2020” 94-96 Neal Martin Vinous “The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comprises three barrels from the domaine supplemented by one from another source. It has a strict nose: crushed stone, flint, red apples and then as it opens, a touch of kerosene. The palate is medium-bodied with immense concentration matched with a fine bead of acidity. There is some creamy oak to be subsumed, but I admire the persistence and length on the finish. Great potential.”

DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET

2019

$125.00

89-91 /100 Jasper Morris MW “Mostly from Jean-Michel Chartron’s Benoîtes vineyards with supplements. This is looking pretty good on the nose, more white fruit, reasonably chiselled. Fleshes out more at the back, in a good way. Some length here. Tasted: October 2020” 89-91/100 Neal Martin – Vinous: " The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Villages has an attractive bouquet with dried honey and citrus fruit, a touch of lemon thyme in the background that becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with orange rind and quince, a pretty and generous Chassagne with a slightly vanillary, cashew nut-tinged finish. A punters’ Chassagne (as they say).”

DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON CHEVALIER-MONTRACHET GRAND CRU CLOS DES 2019

$999.00

94-97/100 Jasper Morris MW “ Still in barrel, unracked. Pale lemon with the faintest of green tints. The bouquet is very stylish, has all the pure white flair of Chevalier. Is there a faint sucrosity? Perhaps, but the freshness of the core fruit comes up behind. Really very persistent and retains this sense of fineboned elegance. Intense fresh pear notes, with a little apple and lemon dancing in between. Tasted: October 2020 93-95/100 Neal Martin Vinous “The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevaliers Grand Cru has a very strict and linear nose, crushed stone and dewy Granny Smith apples, touches of flint coming through with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with a silver bead of acidity, hints of blackcurrant leaf with a gentle, lilting finish. One of the prettiest Clos de Chevaliers that I have tasted from Chartron. Delightful.”

DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON CORTON CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU

2019

$445.00

92-94 /100 Jasper Morris MW “The cuvée consists of two Chartron barrels and two additional barrels, one yellow. This is the banana fruit style of bouquet. Fruit fills the mouth evenly from front to back, with the banana component currently prevalent. Doesn’t inhibit a stonier finish though. Good tension here to finish, moderate length. Tasted: October 2020 93-95/100 Neal Martin Vinous “two barrels from the domaine and three barrels from two other sources. It comes across surprisingly closed on the nose. Maybe just going through a dumb phase of élevage? The palate is medium-bodied and much more expressive, gorgeous yellow plum and pithy/peachy notes with a caressing finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this should be a very seductive "CC".”

Tasted: October 2020 91-93/100 Neal Martin – Vinous “The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de La Pucelle 1er Cru has a classy, stony bouquet with traces of yellow plum and orange pith, one of the most detailed from Chartron this year. The palate is taut and linear with a fine bead of acidity, lightly spiced with a gentle grip on the dense finish. Excellent.”

2019

$125.00

89-92/100 Jasper Morris MW “From 7 ouvrées of Chartron vineyards in Tremblots and Derriere la Velle and the rest purchased fruit, or rather exchanged. Quite stylish because there is some detail here, little waves of flavour, a bit of yellow fruit, some warmth, but it all ties in nicely together, barrel is perfectly integrated, and this is long for a village Puligny. Tasted: October 2020” 89-89/100 Neal Martin Vinous” The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Village, which comes mainly from grapes and must exchanged with other growers, has a crisp dewy meadow and green apple scented bouquet your quintessential Puligny in many ways. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, approachable if just missing a little mineralité due to the warmth of the growing season on the finish. Fine.”

DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU CLOS DU

2019

$215.00

90-93/100 Jasper Morris MW “One half barrel. Glowing purple, fractional temporary oxidation, which I am sure will clean up. Supreme concentrated raspberry juice, vinified in an upright barrel. Lovely strains of pure classy pinot behind, raspberry, redcurrant, even some strawberry. Pretty good length. Tasted: October 2020 93-95/100 Neal Martin Vinous “The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru is even better than the preceeding Clos de La Pucelle thanks to its heightened mineralité and killer delineation. The aromatics are in H.D. The palate is powerful and intense, very sappy and saline with a dense and very long lightly spiced finish. There is a sense of completeness to this Puligny that I love, a thrilling wine from Jean-Michel Chartron.”

DOMAINE JEAN CHARTRON PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU FOLATIERES

2019

$189.00

90-93/100 Jasper Morris MW “ Domaine fruit. Pale lemon and primrose. An elegant nose, middleweight, some flesh, also floral, this is not one of the fullest-bodied Folatières. Lemon notes at the finish, good length, not as much of a step up from the village as I anticipated. Tasted: October 2020 90-92/100 Neal Martin Vinous “The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with scents of lime, lemon, thyme and mirabelle, touches of crushed rock bursting from the glass. The palate is rounded and generous on the entry with subtle tropical notes, tapering slightly towards the more classically-driven, mineral finish with satisfying salinity. Good, but outclassed by the Clos du Cailleret and Clos de La Pucelle at the moment.”

Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur Burghound Producer note “As previously reported, Bernard Gros has ceded the direction of the domaine to his son Vincent, who commented that the 2020 vintage "gave us excellent raw materials with which to work. We chose to begin picking on the 3rd of September and the fruit was clean and ripe with virtually no sorting required. Yields though were another story as they were limited to a range of 25 to 35 hl/ha and nothing was concentrated except the Richebourg. Potential alcohols came be between 13 and 14% and nothing was chaptalized. As we have been gradually doing, we're phasing out the use of new wood and on average it was no more than 5% in 2020. As to the wines, they're impressively dense with solid aging potential." I very much like the direction that Vincent Gros is taking the domaine as the wines seem to have more freshness and vibrancy with less new wood influence though I underscore that this is to say less, not none. While there is one in 2020, fans of the domaine should remember that there was no Chaumes in 2019 as the yields were too small so it was incorporated into the Vosne 1er cuvée. The 2019s, reviewed below, were bottled in February and March 2021. “

Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur Bernard Gros, whose vineyards and cellar back onto Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, produces his wines in a similar style to Michel, but very different terroir in his vineyards results in wines with more power than his brother. His quality begins with the fact he owns top quality parcels in each appellation. His Clos Vougeot-Musigni for example, is at the premier top of the cru just beneath the slope of Musigny, hence the name. One of the more conscientious producers, Bernard strictly limits his yields for the depth and concentration of fruit he seeks, and the wines are only lightly fined, never filtered. Gros Frère wines are deep and dark and whilst known for their expressive aromatics, their bigger structure and back bone means they definitely demand time in the bottle.

DOMAINE GROS FRERE ET SOEUR CHEMIN DES MOINES DE VERGY

2019

$145.00

First produced in 2017, Chemin des Moines de Vergy confirms its quality every year. The result of several years of reflection and work, this new single plot of three hectares and eighty acres overlooks the Grands Crus of Vosne-Romanee. This area without geographical indication benefits from an exceptional soil composition, clay-limestone, identifiable with that of the great terroirs of Burgundy. Planted in high vines, with a selection of the best Pinot Noir, its feet are exposed to the east. Territory of the Monks of Vergy, the plot runs along the path they took daily to reach the Abbey of Saint-Vivant from Vosne-Romanee and their harvesting room. The expression is just, very distinctive, combining fruitiness and freshness. The mouth is straight and made up of a beautiful structure while offering a formidable finesse.

Domaine Lamarche Producer note: Nicole Lamarche succinctly told me that the 2019 growing season "was about as hot as 2018 but even drier which induced some hydric stress in the vines but not so much as to cause them to shut down. There was also the risk of oidium, so it was necessary to be quite vigilant though in the end, it turned out to be more worry than an actual problem. Otherwise, it was a relatively easy season to manage and I picked from the 7th of September and harvested clean and very ripe fruit but importantly, not too ripe as the highest potential alcohol was 13.7%. Yields were actually pretty good as volumes were only down slightly from what we realized in 2018. I used between 10 and 30% whole clusters and the skins were quite thick so it was clear that you couldn't push the vinifications too hard without risking having very extracted wines. As such, I chose to vinify very lightly as I also absolutely wanted to avoid blurring the terroir transparency. As to the wines, I really like them as they're more terroir-driven than 2018 and perhaps a bit more elegant as well." I was impressed by the quality of the 2019s as well as the four 2018s that I reviewed below, and which had been bottled in April 2020. Vinous – Neal Martin: Nicole Lamarche showed me through the domaine’s 2019s, the log fire welcoming me inside from the chilly streets of Vosne-Romanée. “We had a little coulure during flowering,” Lamarche explained. “It was important for us to stay on the red side of fruit and retain the Pinoté. We started the harvest on 7 September, the same as in 2018, and picked over the following week. The maximum alcohol is 13.6° for the Echézeaux. There is slightly less yield than in 2018. All the wines include 30 to 40% whole bunches, although the stems are added very gently and we used between 30-50% new oak for the Grand Crus, the maximum for the Grandes-Echézeaux.” This was a typical set of wines from Lamarche that definitely err towards the lighter, more “transparent” style of winemaking that occasionally makes me hanker for more substance and grip. I occasionally found this to be a case for one or two 2019s that were almost so airy that they lost some of their terroir expression.

Domaine Lamarche The family history in the village of Vosne-Romanée dates back to around 1740, and from the end of the 19th Century the estate has grown considerably. Henri Lamarche, a cooper, married Marie Grivelet from Chambolle-Musigny and founded the estate. From early in the 1700’s wines were produced by various members of the family off the prestigious terroirs of Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot, including from La Grande Rue, one of the rare Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanée. This vineyard has an incredible terroir, sitting in between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti itself. Today the estate is run by the sixth generation, Nicole and Nathalie, who have begun to transform the quality back to where it should be.

Domaine Tortochot - 2019 Vintage Burghound Producer note: Chantal Tortochot, who directs this biologically farmed 11 ha domaine, and has done so since 1997 and is now ECO certified, briefly described the 2019 growing season as one that "was hot and dry and it began that way as even the winter was dry, which is unusual for Burgundy. Bud burst was later than in either 2018 or 2020 and while there was frost risk, we were lucky and suffered no appreciable damage. Thereafter the summer was largely hot and dry, and the combined effect was enough to induce some hydric stress in the vines though on the plus side, we basically had no disease pressure. I chose to begin picking on the 15th of September and we effectively had no sorting work as the fruit was exceptionally clean. Yields were good, though not as good as 2018, at around 35 hl/ha and the highest potential alcohol came in at 13.5% so there was no chaptalization. I used around 25% whole clusters in the fermentations, and I vinified very softly. As to the wines, they have sufficient density and fruit to permit early accessibility, but they also have the stuffing to age well over several decades if desired."

Domaine Tortochot Domaine Tortochot is a lovely property in Gevrey, rejuvenated by Chantal Tortochot, who took over the estate from her father in the late 1990’s. The family have been in Gevrey for many generations, but it was not until Chantal took over that the wines really began to show their potential. She is a skilled winemaker, producing wines that beautifully represent the terroir while still being accessible and fruit driven. The quality gets better with every vintage. Definitely a producer to start following. We are lucky enough to have allocations of the jewels in their range: Lavaux St-Jacques, Champeaux, and Chambertin itself.

Domaine Parent Burghound Producer note: Anne Parent, who has directed this 10 ha domaine since 1998 where 90% of the production is in red, told me that "the toughest decision facing us in 2019 was deciding when to pick. Due to early season frost and an uneven flowering, we had disparate maturities despite a very warm growing season. The trick was to get the balance right so that you didn't have too many under ripe berries though you don't want a bunch of over ripe and wilted berries either. Ultimately we chose to begin harvesting on the13th of September and brought in ripe and clean fruit that required some light sorting but nothing major. Yields were pretty good at an average of 39 hl/ha with reasonable potential alcohols as the highest came in at 13.8%. I used a bit more whole clusters than in 2018 and the fermentations presented no difficulties of note. As to the wines, they are balanced and vibrant, in fact despite the summer warmth, they do not drink like they're the product of a hot vintage." As was the case with the Parent 2018s, I was suitably impressed with the range of Pommard wines. Parent noted that the 2019s will be bottled without fining or filtration. Vinous – Neal Martin Producer note: Anne Parent is a grower that I always look forward to visiting, reliably candid with opinions about recent growing seasons and the state of Burgundy. “It was an eclectic year in seasonal terms: autumn in spring, summer in winter, the hot temperatures. There was a lot of millerandé bunches especially on old vines after flowering but there was no frost despite the low temperatures in early April. We lost around 20% to 30% of production, between 40-42hl/ha on average, except on Grand Crus. We started the harvest on 13 September, and it was important to obtain the balance between maturity and phenolic maturity. I was very impressed by the quality of grapes. The acidity was not too low, the pH between 3.35 and 3.45 and the highest alcohol was in [Pommard] Les Chanlins at 13.7°. The malo was between the end of December and February whereas normally it finishes April and May. We did a big déléstage to give some oxygen to the yeast and for the maceration we did mostly remontage but much less pigeage. The 2019 vintage was like 2015 in that you could age the wines entirely in new oak. I decided not to rack too early. None of the wines are racked. I will do that in November.” This was a sterling set of 2019s from Parent crowned by two gems in Pommard, a brilliant Les Epenotes and a supremely gifted Les Chanlins. As Parent herself mentioned, she felt the concentration allowed her to nudge up the new oak percentage and as such, some of the cuvées showed more wood tannins and will require longer cellaring than their 2018 counterparts. Stylistically, these are slightly richer and denser wines than others, yet well balanced and imbued with plenty of freshness thanks to assiduous use of stem addition.

Domaine Parent The Parent family can trace their roots back to Etienne Parent. He established a professional and friendly relationship with Thomas Jefferson in 1787 as his Burgundy wine advisor. The Parent family have been a permanent fixture in Pommard since this time, with the sixth generation, sisters Anne and Catherine now in charge. Their brother Francois works with his wife at their Domaine A.F Gros. Since 1998 Anne has modified her approach to the wines, 100% destemming, hand picking and using three sorting tables. The story here is a little like that of Domaine Lamarche, where the quality has soared in recent years.

There is fine volume and mid-palate density to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess a sleek, even refined mouthfeel, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This is a fine Pommard villages." Note 30% Whole Clusters Rated: Outstanding

DOMAINE PARENT LADOIX 1ER CRU LA CORVEE

2019

Retail $120.00

89-91 | Burghound: " There is enough wood present to point out on the smokey aromas of plum liqueur and newly turned earth. The opulent, round and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract on the moderately firm and sappy finish. This mildly rustic effort should be approachable young but repay mid-term cellaring."

DOMAINE PARENT LADOIX COTE DE BEAUNE

2019

$108.00

87-89 | Burghound: " This is also mildly reduced but I doubt that it will linger. Otherwise there is good richness to the plush and round medium weight flavors that exhibit fine persistence on the balanced finish. This could use better depth, but more will likely develop if given a chance."

2019

$198.00

90-92 /100 Burghound: “Note: 40% whole clusters Tasting note: Spicy aromas speak of plum, various dark berries and plenty of earth and humus nuances. This too possesses a lovely texture as the caressing medium-bodied flavors deliver fine length on the vibrant, balanced and slightly more complex finale.”

DOMAINE PARENT POMMARD 1ER CRU LES ARGILLIERES

2019

$198.00

89-92 /100 Burghound “Note: 40% whole clustersTasting note: This expressive effort is also trimmed in subtle but easily discernible wood on the spicy and quite floral notes of plum, menthol and red and dark cherries. The refined, energetic and delicious middle weight flavors display a lovely blend of richness and verve on the lightly austere finish where the only reproach is again a touch of warmth.” 89-91/100 Neal Martin “The 2019 Pommard Les Argillières 1er Cru includes 10% whole clusters and matured in 40% new French oak. It has a more open-knit and expressive bouquet with red cherries, strawberry, orange rind and a touch of crushed stone. The palate is very elegant and graceful with supple tannins, the red fruit merging with blacker fruit towards the finish with a dusting of cocoa from the oak. That will need time to be assimilated, so give it 2-3 years in bottle.”

2019

$198.00

90-93 /100 Burghound: Outstanding “Note: from 20+ year old vines; 40% whole clusters Tasting note: Cool and pure aromas are comprised by the essence of red currant, cherry and very pretty spice and floral elements that are trimmed in moderate wood influence. There is excellent cut and drive to the bigger-bodied flavors that flash excellent power on the austere, serious and mineral-driven finale where once again a touch of warmth slowly emerges.”

2019

$245.00

91-93 /100 Burghound: Outstanding “Note: from 85+ year old vines; 50% whole clusters Tasting note: Moderate wood stops short of being invasive on the agreeably spicy and markedly floral nose of earth, leather and dark berries. There is excellent volume and richness to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate depth and persistence. This balanced effort is robust but not really rustic and is a wine that should amply repay extended cellaring yet be approachable after 6 to 8.”

DOMAINE PARENT POMMARD 1ER CRU LES CHARMOTES

2019

$198.00

90-93 /100 Burghound: Outstanding “Note: this is a négociant wine that is sold under the Jacques Parent label; 40% whole clusters Tasting note: A ripe nose offers up notes of poached plum, violet, spice and again, plenty of earth where the wood treatment is more subtle. There is excellent volume and focused power to the medium weight flavors that aren't as big and robust as those of the Chanlins, yet the supporting tannins are even firmer on the stony and mouth coating finale. Lovely but patience advised.”

DOMAINE PARENT POMMARD 1ER CRU LES EPONETS

2019

Retail $285.00

89-92/100 Burghound: “Note: from both Grands and Petits in a roughly 50/50 proportion; 60% whole clusters Tasting note: Here too moderate wood surrounds the overtly floral suffused nose of earthy red and dark currant scents. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the sappy substantially scaled flavors that display noticeable sweetness and warmth on the finish where the wood reemerges. This is awkward at present and the wood isn't especially well-integrated at present. 93-95 Neal Martin Vinous: A blend of Les Grands and Les Petits Epenots lieux-dits, the 2019 Pommard Les Epenots 1er Cru is made with 35% whole bunches ad 50% new French oak. It has a fragrant and quite floral bouquet, wilted rose petals intertwined with red berry fruit, touches of sage in the background, later damp loam. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, beautifully balanced with the greatest precision on the finish. Excellent.”

Moutard Famille The Moutard-Diligent family can trace their history of viticulture as far back as 1642, but it was not until the 1920s that they began producing champagne under their own name. Today, under the stewardship of François, Veronique, and Agnes Moutard, the estate consists of 22.5 hectares of vines in the Côte des Bar region of southern Champagne. The origins of the vineyard go back to Gallo-Roman times. Along with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, the family is one of the few to still nurture the permitted Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc grapes, instilling these almost forgotten varieties with a new lease of life. Moutard produce a full range of champagnes, including the unique Cuvée des 6 Cépages, made from six different varieties, the only one of its kind. The non-vintage wines are all aged for at least three years, the vintage and prestige champagnes for ten to fifteen. Both Moutard?s rosé and Grande

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet Currently working the 13th generation of the family business, Séguinot-Bordet have been producing wine in the commune of Maligny since the 18th Century, with records showing the family’s roots in Chablis stretching back as far as 1590. The man in charge, the brilliant Jean-François Bordet, has forged a wonderful union between the old and the new and taken his family house to another level. Jean-François has installed a brand new winery in Maligny and established a strict viticultural regime in the vineyards, with cropping levels reduced and the Chardonnay harvested later. With the exception of the Grand Cru, all the wines are cool fermented and matured on lees in stainless steel to achieve fresh, clean fruit underscored by the minerality that characterises the classic Chablis style. Their signature Chablis comes off the Premier Cru vineyard Fourchaume, which they part own. With demand for their product at an all-time high, Séguinot-Bordet have had to start allocating their elegantly expressive, benchmark wines.

William Fèvre Coming from a family that has been in the Chablis region for more than 250 years, William Fèvre's father was already a great wine-maker following World War II. Son William founded the Domaine de la Maladière and announced his first harvest in 1959. William worked each plot assiduously to make wines that aptly reflected their terroir. In 1998, the Henriot family from Champagne succeeded him, bringing with them a good understanding of the Chardonnay variety. All their efforts go into expressing with flair the most subtle variations in the greatest Chablis Crus.

WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS BOUGROS COTE DE BOUGUEROTS GRAND CRU

2019

Retail $210.00

93-95/100 | Burghound: “This too offers a wonderfully broad range of classic Chablis elements that include mineral reduction, iodine, ocean breeze and quinine on the citrus-infused nose. The racy, detailed and beautifully textured and focused flavors deliver outstanding length on the balanced, salivainducing and sneaky long finish. This is also quite classy and if not quite as complete as the Preuses in 2019, it's close and with time in bottle, it may well catch its stablemate.”

WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS LES CLOS GRAND CRU

2019

$240.00

93-96/100 | Burghound:"“If Kimmeridgian could be distilled, it would likely smell exactly like the nose of the 2019 Les Clos with the additions of wet chalk, citrus zest and oyster shell. There is equally good delineation to the snappy, painfully intense and overtly stony large-bodied flavors that deliver superb length on the balanced finale. This elegant and classy effort is also built on a base of almost pungent minerality and a wine that is indisputably going to age effortlessly for years.”

WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS LES PREUSES GRAND CRU

2019

$199.00

94-96/100 | Burghound: “This too could be from nowhere else except Chablis with its citrus-tinged aromas of tidal pool, white flowers and shellfish. The racy, intense and painfully intense larger-scaled flavors possess cuts-like-a-knife delineation on the bone dry and super-saline finish where a distinct bitter lemon quality slowly emerges. This is very classy juice and also built-to-age.”

91-94/100 | Burghound: “This could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its equally cool, elegant and airy aromas of white-fleshed fruit, floral, iodine and subtle passion fruit-scanted nose. The supersleek, refined and energetic medium weight flavors possess both ample minerality and a caressing texture, all wrapped in a slightly more complex, very dry and impressively long finale. Lovely.”

WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS MONTEE DE TONNERRE 1ER CRU

2019

$125.00

91-93/100 | Burghound: “Pale color. An admirably pure, airy and decidedly cool nose features notes of acacia, citrus zest and mineral reduction. The wonderfully refined, chalky and stony medium weight flavors possess really lovely underlying tension and fine detail while delivering excellent length where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too will need to add depth, but the quality of the underlying material appears up to the task.”

43090

WILLIAM FEVRE CHABLIS VAILLONS 1ER CRU

2019

$94.00

89-92/100 | Burghound: “A slightly riper and quite dense nose features notes of white pepper, quinine, mineral reduction and a combination of orchard fruit compote scents. There is excellent volume to the sappy and powerful flavors that, somewhat surprisingly, flirt with rusticity on the noticeably warm bitter lemon-inflected finish. Like the Beauroy, this is not a Vaillons of finesse, but it certainly cannot be faulted for a lack of frank character.”

Domaine Laroche The Laroche family have produced wine in Chablis since 1850. Yikes. How does one not fall asleep at the wheel? They don’t, though. For five generations, the family has been dedicated to producing top quality wines from this famed appellation, where a unique mix of limestone, clay and shell, a relatively northerly climate and the Chardonnay grape all combine to produce a style of wine like no other. The steely, floral bouquet, delicately crisp, refined flavours and unmistakable underlying flintiness are indelibly characteristic of their terroir. Here, Chardonnay reigns supreme, and under the guidance of Michel Laroche, the Domaine have expanded from a mere six hectares in the 1960’s to the current 130 hectares of prime Chablis vineyard, in the process forging a masterful reputation for Chablisean excellence. Here, once again, it’s all about terroir, with Michel Laroche summing it up succinctly: ‘To produce the best Chablis, you need to produce the best grapes.’
