WELCOME TO THE NAKED HOP! A monthly publication coming to you from the Glengarry team of beer experts, where we explore everything beer related. Here you’ll find an in depth look into the beer world and what makes it tick.
In the ninth issue of The Naked Hop, we give you even more of an excuse to watch everyone's favourite fantasy drama series, when we pair some of its fiery characters with some cool brews. We recap the exciting first ever Naked Hop Beer Festival and how it all went down. And finally, we get a closer look into the Leigh based brewery Sawmill where we talk NZ firsts, awards and of course the beer! Then when you feel a thirst that needs to be quenched, we invite you to come down to one our stores for an instore tasting.
GAME OF BREWS They say we are all connected by six degrees of separation. This got me wondering if this idea could be applied to fictional characters and beer? Well, winter is coming (insert theme music) so it’s only fitting to play this game with one another. Can one match a current Kiwi brew to a character that has survived 8 seasons of war, poison, and political games for the Iron Throne? P.S Spoiler alert for anyone still trying to catch

Being the second oldest she was raised traditionally feminine and groomed to be a Lady or Queen. Her misfortunes and tribulations have shaped her into a force to be reckoned with. For Sansa I have chosen Yeastie Boys ‘Divine Hammer’. The rye amber ale is full of the traditional malt flavours of chocolate and biscuit, with an added complexity of succulent red berry fruits, a lingering bitterness backbone and an intriguing spice. 2

CERSEI LANNISTER The Queen Mother of Westeros, Cersei used her womanly wiles to eliminate her enemies and maintain her tenuous hold on power. Slowly but surely everything she touches turns to ash. For her, Fork Brewing ‘Tainted Love’ complements well. Sour at the core, with dashes of Juniper (a poison in high doses) perfectly disguised with an upfront layer of generous, juicy, and seductive passionfruit.

OUR FIRST NAKED HOP FESTIVAL
Recently we just held our very first Naked Hop Beer Festival. WOW! What a fantastic day it was down at Glengarry Wines Khyber Pass. A day filled with pernicious brews and mouth-watering food by the Dixie American BBQ Foodtruck. Behemoth brought Something Hoppy IPA, Tropical As IPA, Hopped up Pilsner, Chur Pale Ale, 6 Foot 5 IPA, Impeachment Sour Ale and their Triple Chocolate Milk Stout. Showing off a

breweries to fear, with the Outlaw Indian Pale Lager rivalling Garage Project for the best pairing with the finger licking BBQ. Colab came out of the gates running with their incredible Strawberry Sass Wheat. Lavish fresh strawberry on the nose and the palate. McLeod's delivered some absolutely delicious brews with their radically refreshing Longboarder Lager. You could then send the palate on the adventure of life time with the Great Migration IPA. Rudi’s showed why it was a fan favourite with the iconic Dr Rudi's Lager.
Deep Creek showed off a fine core range from the elegant and delicate Lotus Pale Ale to the robust Dusty Gringo Indian Brown Ale, making more than just a splash with their brews. Garage Project brought forth, from their weird and wonderful workshop, Bug Powder Dust. An explosive lupulin powder filled IPA that paired perfectly with the American BBQ, giving a delicious combo for the midday lunch.
Finally, it was the turn of the beers from abroad to have their turn in the limelight. Hailing from sunny California, Ballast Point showed that all that sunshine and freedom has given rise to a different kind of taste. Their dank Scuplin IPA and their smooth Manta Double IPA popped with fresh fruit aromas, showing New Zealand breweries how an IPA is done in the Great West. From One could then cleanse their palate with the tart

SAWMILL 7
In 2004 Mike Sutherland and Kirsty McKay threw themselves into making the best craft beer they could. Located in the old 1860’s sawmill in Leigh, out the back of the Sawmill cafe, they were well off the beaten track. Located on the east coast, one hour north of Auckland, Leigh (16km from Matakana) is relatively isolated. Craft beer at this time in NZ was still a relatively young industry, and mostly concentrated in Wellington and Nelson. The dividend of this isolation is that they didn’t have
