SPIRIT OF DUBLIN
POITÍN
Poitín is the traditional Irish distilled beverage. It is essentially Irish moonshine, an unaged small single pot still whiskey. The name itself comes from the Irish word for pot - pota. As it was illegal to produce, it was usually made in remote areas, far from the eyes of the law. The stills were often set up right on land boundaries so, if discovered, the ownership could be disputed. Prior to bottled gas the still was heated by burning peat, so windy weather was
The ‘Spirit of Dublin’ Premium Irish Poitín is produced at Newmarket Dublin 8, the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125yrs. When it opened in 2015 this marked the return of the Teeling family to their ancestral distilling home of the Liberties in the heart of the city.
Erskine Nicol - A Nip Against the Cold
The Spirit of Dublin Irish Poitín is triple distilled in the distillery’s three copper pot stills and made from a traditional Dublin Pot Still recipe of 50/50 unmalted and malted Irish barley, giving it a distinctively sweet cereal taste. Bottled straight from the still at 52.5% with no maturation process, the newest addition to the Teeling range is a surprisingly smooth spirit which can be enjoyed neat, or with water. Great as an after-dinner drink alongside a coffee, but even better in your favourite whiskey cocktail where the relatively high strength will shine through. Even better, this won’t give you the particularly bad Irish hangover, traditionally associated with the home-made variety.
chosen to hide the smoke. Like many moonshines around the world, the quality was highly variable, depending on the equipment and the skill of the distiller. Reputations were built on this and families became known for their expertise, where a single bad batch could put someone out of business. Appropriately póit happens to mean a hangover, a reasonably common result of drinking Poitín. Today Irish Poitín has its own Geographical Indicative status from the EU, with strict guidelines for materials and production. In homage to this authentic Irish spirit, the Teeling Whiskey Company has released a contemporary bottling of Poitín to help bring this unique Irish product out of the shadows. GET YOUR SPIRITS UP
GLENGARRY SPIRITS IS NOW OPEN
In February we opened Glengarry Spirits at 54 Jervois Road, the site where Josef Jakicevich, our founder, started his original grocery store in 1945. It was on this site that we held one of the first two liquor licences issued to retailers. Glengarry Spirits is a stand-alone store in which you can immerse yourself in the world of premium spirits within a specially-crafted space catering solely to this genre. The range instore is second to none, with the finest exemplars of each spirit category. The products on offer just one part of the story, the retail experience instore quite unlike any other. The experienced team on site can’t wait to see you instore to share the stories behind the spirits and taste with you in order to aid you in your selection. For those not in the neighbourhood or with a preference for shopping online. In another exciting development, Glengarry has a new website – www.whiskyshop.co.nz A site that had been built up over the years by Bart and Katey of Malts of Distinction, Glengarry’s acquisition of their business early 2019 included this website. It’s had a Glengarry styled facelift and all the tech smarts behind it that are present on the Glengarry website. On this site you can see the extensive range of spirits Glengarry carries, although the name implies it’s all about whisky (there’s certainly a lot of it there) it does cover the full gambit of spirits with delivery available nationwide. For those currently shopping on the Glengarry website, your log in will work on the new website and you’ll enjoy all the benefits you do online at www.glengarry.co.nz at www.whiskyshop.co.nz. - L.W
DARNLEY’S GIN
INTERNATIONAL FLARE The Darnley’s Gin distillery is located in the picture-perfect area of Fife (for those golf nuts who follow the St Andrews Open Championship, you’ll know the area well). All ingredients for these award-winning gins are sourced locally, and from as far afield as Morocco, giving Darnley’s range of gins that international flare.
Their Original Gin recipe was inspired by wild elderflowers growing around the Wemyss family estate in Scotland. It was no wonder they wanted to create something different in the London Dry style but honouring their distillers history. On the nose of the Original Gin you will get notes of pine needles, juniper, and elderflower. On the palate, grapefruit and juniper with mellowed spices. The finish is long and dry with floral notes. It is a perfect gin for Gin & Tonics on those warm, lazy summer afternoons. Like most distillers nowadays, one gin is never enough. The range also includes a Spiced Gin where botanicals are sourced from Africa, China and Morocco. The nose has notes of orange, rosemary, cinnamon and coriander. The palate gives you mixed spices, ginger and ground pepper all followed by a hint of orange zest. This would be better served on a cold winter’s night around the fire while watching the classic Braveheart. FREEDOM!! Last, but by no means least, the Spiced Gin – Navy Strength Edition (“Navy Strength Gin” is a 1990s marketing creation to sell spirits which meet 100° UK Proof (114 modern proof) and are 57.1% ABV.) They have added more junipers to this recipe which gives you more intense spiced characteristics on the nose and palate. As a side note - for those who are lucky enough to travel to Scotland, the Darnley’s distillery offers the chance to distil your own ‘one of a kind’ gin on site to take home, and why not take a tour around the grounds and finish off the day enjoying a refreshing G&T while taking in the rolling green hills of Scotland. Sounds perfect! But, until you get the chance to visit Scotland, the range can be purchased from any Glengarry store or online.
