54 JERVOIS ROAD, PONSONBY INTRODUCING 54 JERVOIS ROAD, PONSONBY What, for the Jakicevich family, started as a pioneering winemaking venture in West Auckland’s Glengarry Road has, over four generations, developed into New Zealand’s largest family-owned liquor retailer, Glengarry Wines. As New Zealand’s Independent Rulers of Wine Retailing, the Glengarry wine voice is loud and proud, with a reputation for quality and wine knowledge that is recognised well beyond these shores. Wine is our core business; it is who we are, and who we have been for almost 70 years now. However, standing still is not what we do, not what we’ve ever done, in fact, and so there is a new string to our bow, one that sits comfortably alongside our wine retailing brand: Glengarry Spirits is a stand-alone store, an independent and singular exponent of the finest spirits the world has to offer, located on the Jervois Road site where it all began back in 1945. If you’re into a particular type of music, you could view this venture as separating the alcoholic beverage into its various genres, much as music does, with each genre catering to its own distinct fan-base and associated expertise. Thus, over there, we’re all about wine, and over here, we’re operating as a Spirit Specialist, with each aspect distinctly separate, but siblings nonetheless, under the Glengarry banner. Glengarry Spirits will be a shopping experience quite unlike any other currently found
in New Zealand. Customers will be able to immerse themselves in the world of premium spirits within a specially-crafted space catering solely to the genre, where they will encounter the finest exemplars of each spirit category. The products on offer will include unique items and rare bottlings, dispensed by a team of expert spirit specialists with useful knowledge to share and interesting stories to tell. As well as functioning as a space to showcase the world of spirits, the Glengarry Spirits store will conduct spirit-related tastings and events, with private functions from seminars to celebrations available to be booked. An exciting array of tastings and events awaits. - L.W

ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTIN-TEXAS The famed ‘Tito’s Handmade Vodka’ from Austin-Texas is now available in New Zealand. On a shelf of luxurious brands designed for the nightclub table, Tito’s tends not to stand out, yet it has been a unanimous double gold medal winner in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Bert Butler ‘Tito’ Beveridge II grew up in Texas playing Polo and wanting to train horses. At University he studied geophysics and geology, and worked his way into the oil business, travelling between Houston and South America. Yearning for air conditioning, he then sold mortgages for a time, until the real estate market collapsed and he found himself unemployed. One evening on late night TV he came across a motivational speaker whose clichéd advice changed his life. “Find the intersection of what you love to do and what you’re good at”. This whole time his hobby had been distilling cheap vodka as gifts for his friends. It was time to take things seriously. At the time it was supposedly illegal to have a distillery in Texas. Tito went through the 3-inch thick codebook, and proved to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission that there was no such statue. They then sent it to the Feds, who claimed they could only license companies, not individuals. Tito won that fight too. This was during their third tax audit of him, when he was cited for 26 code violations. He couldn’t afford a lawyer so defended himself, and got every violation dismissed as he knew the laws so well. Tito had purchased 12 acres in Travis County, and established the distillery after squeezing $90,000 from 19 credit cards. Starting with a homemade 16 gallon pot still, which was cobbled together from a turkey-frying rig and two Dr Pepper kegs. For the first 6 years, every bottle was filled and sealed by hand before they could afford a machine to do it. He then built his brand by walking the pavements of Austin, telling his story, and giving away samples. Lots of samples. He would be at every bar, convincing reluctant managers by doing blind taste tests against expensive bottles. He would hand out tastes in small neighbourhood liquor stores, and be at every new gallery opening, unloading the boxes and pouring drinks himself. He designed the simple label on his computer, using the fanciest font he could find. He was dating a girl at the time who insisted he use recycled paper on his simple glass bottle. “I was raised that if you are going to do something, do it right, do it better than anyone else, and charge a reasonable price.”
IN THE SPIRIT OF SUMMER In its most basic form, Gin is a liquor around 40% alcohol that is derived from grain spirit, and is flavoured primarily with Juniper Berries. It was invented by the Dutch in the 1600’s and then quickly adopted by the British in the latter half of the 17th Century, this period became known as the “Gin Craze”. As far as the English are concerned Gin was never out of fashion, but in the rest of the world it has seen a massive resurgence in popularity, and we are spoilt for choice here. As well as a huge number of producers, we are also faced with a new raft of flavoured Gins, many of the most interesting from New Zealand. Blush Gin is a triple distilled Gin flavoured with Rhubarb. The Rhubarb works well as it has a tart quality, and marries well with the Gin profile. This can be enjoyed over ice or with the tonic of your choice. Another method that is being used is barrel aging. While you may think that this is slightly weird, the barrel ageing adds a spice and extra complexity that works well with Gin. The Source Barrel Aged Gin from the Cardrona Distillery has all the hallmarks of a stylish spirit, the flavour profile is underpinned with a sweet red fruit finish. Reid and Reid from Martinborough have also released a barrel aged Gin and it is extraordinary. The barrels are ex Martinborough Vineyards Pinot Noir French oak, so certainly not lacking in quality! These Gins can be sipped over ice, or in a G&T. With the latter I would advise partaking of a tiny sip of Gin on its own, and then selecting a tonic from there. Here again we are spoiled for choice, but my advice for tonic would be keep it simple. The East Imperial Burma Tonic or the Fever Tree usually work very well. Happy sipping….
There are some major points of difference with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, starting with the fact it is produced from American yellow corn, rather than wheat or potatoes. Tito believes that corn retains more smoothness and body after distillation. This of course makes it gluten-free (It’s also sugar and gelatine free). It is distilled an incredible six times, in oldfashioned copper pot stills. This requires a lot more time and effort than the usual vodka column stills, creating a richer, broader and more flavoured spirit. Finally it is filtered through activated carbon, the finishing touch on one of the world’s finest Vodkas.
