ITALY | SICILIA
Sicily is home to more wineries than any other Italian region. Leading light on the island is the fortified DOC wine, Marsala. Recent chapters in its rich historical tapestry involve stories of investment and resurrection of old vineyards and indigenous varieties. It is, these days, making a considerable name for itself, particularly with wines from the volcanic soils around Mt Etna. Read More..
TERRAZZE DELL ETNA Nestled into the slopes of Mt Etna, Terrazze dell’Etna has a distinctive mineral aspect to its wines. The indigenous red variety is Nerello Mascalese, its wines generally light in colour with vibrant acidity. The terraces were established in the 1800s, with current owner, Nino Bevilacqua, purchasing the property in 2006 and transforming it into one of the area’s most sought-after producers. Everything is done by hand, with no irrigation other than what drains down off the mountain itself. Thanks to the harsh volcanic ground, the viticulturalist needs to cut the roots of the sometimes centuryold vines to stop them growing sideways. Read More..
ITALY | PIEMONTE
A treasure trove of culinary delights, Piemonte is home to Barolo, Barbaresco, truffles and hazelnuts. The predominant red grapes are the indigenous Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, the whites, Arneis and Moscato. The wines are distinctly regional and oozing with flair. Lovers of Pinot Noir will feel right at home with Nebbiolo, which is bottled in its own right as well as being the variety behind the famed Barolo wines. Read More..
MARCHESI DI GRESY The Marchesi di Gresy estate has been in the di Gresy family since 1797. After a long period as suppliers of top-quality fruit to other producers, Alberto di Gresy (raised apparently with ‘no television and a lot of praying') stiffened his resolve, and in 1973 upped the ante, producing the first in-house di Gresy wines and transforming the family business into a worldclass enterprise. The aristocratic and affable Alberto and his team vinify from their four estates, Monte Aribaldo, La Serra, Monte Colombo and Martinenga, the latter considered to be the greatest of all the estates in Barbaresco, and home to the single vineyards, Camp Gros and Gaiun.

LA RAIA A pioneering Italian biodynamic producer located in Novi Ligure in the heart of the Gavi foothills, La Raia specialise in white wines made from the Italian grape variety, Cortese. They encompass 180 hectares, 42 of which are vineyard and 60 fields, with the balance pasture and woods. La Raia was purchased in 2003 by the Rossi Cairo family, who also own Tenuta Cucco. They had the vision of recovering the original ecosystem and carefully restoring the 70-year-old vines that have somehow managed to survive in the hard terrain of marly clay. La Raia produce three excellent Gavi wines and two Barberas based on Nebbiolo. Read More..
DAMILANO Established in 1890, Damilano is managed by Paolo, Mario and Guido Damilano, fourth generation of the family and the largest landowners in the prized Barolo cru, Cannubi. The Damilanos also have access to crus Liste, Cerequio and Brunate. Their style has changed somewhat over the last 10 years with the adoption of external techniques, including the use of barriques; though having the good sense to understand that Nebbiolo can lose its charm with too much new oak, they did return to the older, large French oak. The jewel in their crown, the stunning Cannubi 1752 Riserva, will be on our shelves further down the track. Read More..

MAN O' WAR | WAIHEKE
Our Blanc de Blanc is christened in our mother’s native tongue for her first granddaughter, Tulia, which in Finnish means a small and gentle breeze. Valhalla Chardonnay is named after the shining and golden hall in Norse mythology where the souls of fallen warriors feasted with the gods; Valhalla is also the name of the depot ship that supplied the Royal Navy Motor Launch our grandfather commanded during WWI. Exiled Pinot Gris is named in tribute to Napoleon’s final place of exile where he was banished after his defeat at Waterloo. While Gravestone Sauvignon Semillon alone takes its name from the fluted basalt boulders that solemnly surround the hilltops of Man O’ War.
MAN O' WAR Dreadnought Syrah is named after the first in a line of 20th century battleships which was bestowed with the motto “fear god and dread nought” and embodied a supreme combination of speed and power. Bellerophon Syrah Viognier is christened in honour of the heroic demi-god astride an immortal winged-horse; Bellerophon designates both a new class of Dreadnoughts, and the first blend of Syrah and Viognier from our volcanic hillside vineyards. CHAMPAGNE BLANC DE NOIRS Many of us know the French term Blanc de Blancs, most commonly used for a Champagne made from 100% Chardonnay. Blanc de Noirs is much less understood; literally it means "white from blacks", white wine from black grapes, in this case generally 100% Pinot Noir. As you would imagine these are generally robust, full flavoured and powerful wines, perfect for drinking in the middle of winter. Our champagne expert Regan McCaffery will lead us through 8 different wines, with the stories behind the houses and these unusual and complex

WHEN: Thursday 11 July WHERE: Glengarry Takapuna, Cnr Hurstmere & Killarney Takapuna TIME: 7.00pm
With a winemaking history stretching back to pre-Roman times, a long geographical spread encompassing hundreds of communes and a long list of grape varieties approved under AOC regulation, the Cotes du Rhone region produces a truly breathtaking range of wine. Rose, white, red and sweet fortified wines are all made in the Rhone, and in a range from everyday good value table wine right through to some of the most rare and fine wines in the world. Despite this, the wines made there are often overlooked in favour of the more glamourous regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. In time to celebrate Bastille Day the July Takapuna wine club will be devoted to exploring some classic examples of Cotes du Rhone, so come and hear and taste why these wines are so deserving of extra attention and acclaim. BURGUNDY 2016 | THORNDON
WHEN: Wednesday 17 July WHERE: Glengarry Thorndon, 53 Hutt Rd Thorndon TIME: 6.00pm
The 2016 Burgundy vintage was very complicated, you would almost think that they are getting used to this in Burgundy now as they seem to be constantly challenged by the weather, but 2016 seemed to throw everything at them. However the Burgundians have managed to make a silk purse out of a sows ear and produced a stunning vintage. There is a draw back and that is that yields are down, so much so that it is being described as a rare vintage. The wines are generally thought to be more classic and less weighty, with intense fruit and fresh aromatic qualities. These wines are classic and unique and this is a great opportunity to gain insight in to this tricky vintage. We will taste two wines from four producers. Read more....

Fast forward to 2019 and now it’s as much a 'go to' wine style as any Marlborough Sauv, and what’s not to love? The only problem with rose is where to start! We thought, why not
run a tasting series that's all about rose? So that's just what we've done. Four nights of fivestar rose tasting. Night one, we zoom around Southern France and compare the three appellations of Languedoc, Southern Rhone, and Provence. Night two, we explore roses from Europe, Australia and South America.
