ZEPHYR | IS THAT A MARK III WE HEAR?

Ah, the Zephyr Mark III. The trusty Ford (pinnacle of the Marks, some would argue) has long passed into New Zealand folklore, but there are still a few hangers-on, and we think the Zephyr Winery’s Ben Glover might be one of them. A tribute, then; whole bunch pressed, ancient oak barrels, feral ferment (a bit like the Mark III itself), no stirring, no sulphur, complex fennel and melon flavours accompanied by keen acid. It’s a classic, innit? Read More..

FRANCE | BURGUNDY

The wines produced here are among the world’s greatest. The only simple thing about Burgundy is that if it’s red, it’s Pinot Noir or Gamay and if it’s white, it’s Chardonnay. From there on it gets trickier. Inheritance laws have seen vineyards divided into ever smaller family parcels. In a sea of small producers, it is not uncommon for a single vineyard to have numerous owners. Read More..

DOMAINE DE BELLENE Most of us have grown to accept that the nomenclature of Burgundy wines can be confusing, but when you discover that the wines of Maison de Nicolas Potel are not anything to do with the maverick man himself, that he now has his own estate, Domaine de Bellene located in a 15th-Century abbey in Beaune - you can do an eye roll worthy of the French themselves. The untimely death of his revered father, Gerard, and difficult financial dealings under his own name saw the young and dynamic artisan one of the new Burgundian breed - launch Domaine de Bellene. Nicolas has converted many of his growers to organic practices, and

adhering religiously to his philosophy, Domaine de Bellene is 100% Organic, Carbon Neutral and uses donkeys and horses for all vineyard work. Nicolas Potel has gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as one of Burgundy’s top winemakers. Read More..

FRANCE | BEAUJOLAIS

Officially part of Burgundy, the nonetheless independent Beaujolais froths with highly fragrant and vibrantly flavoursome reds made from Gamay, a thin-skinned – hence low-tannin – grape that the 4,000-plus growers of the region put to (mostly) good use. Almost all of them sell to large co-operatives or negoçiants, with Georges Duboeuf the biggest and the most innovative. Read More..

GEORGES DUBOEUF

The undisputed King of Beaujolais is Georges Duboeuf, who started by roaming the region in his VW back in the 1960’s, making wine wherever he stopped, and whose company now produces upwards of 3 million cases a year, making him one of France's largest and bestknown wine merchants.

An innovator in the way Beaujolais was made, he also took the concept of Beaujolais Nouveau to new heights. It is now one of the wine world's most famous events, and accounts for a fifth of his annual production (approximately 4 million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau alone). It centres around the concept of being the first wine of the vintage, with much fanfare made of the wine's release on the third Thursday in November. Read More..

GLENGARRY JULY TOP 10 | #1 TRINITY HILL

SHADES OF ROSE | SOUTHERN FRANCE To think, 10 years ago, the word 'rose' in New Zealand meant nothing more than a beautiful flower. Fast forward to 2019 and now it’s as much a 'go to' wine style as any Marlborough Sauv, and what’s not to love? The only problem with rose is where to start! We thought, why not run a tasting series that's all about rose? So that's just what we've done. Four nights of fivestar rose tasting. WHEN: Thursday 8 August WHERE: Glengarry Mt Eden Village, 417 Mount Eden Road Mount Eden TIME: 7.00pm

CA DEL BOSCO AND CHAMPAGNE We hesitated before we put the title on this tasting. It is tempting to put 'Ca del Bosco versus Champagne' but it is not a tasting

whereby we pick a winner, more of an exploration of the styles. Our expectation is that we will enjoy every wine for its own charm and personality. The story of Ca del Bosco began in the 1960's when Anna Maria Zanella bought a little house surrounded by chestnut trees in little known area called Franciocorta, where she planted vines. For her son Maurizio, it was a lightning bolt that ignited a vision, he then went to Champagne and came back determined to make something similar. What was once a Chestnut wood has now become one of the most trailblazing wineries in Italy. On the flip side we have the champagnes - as far as history and marketing themselves goes, as a region they are unbeatable. This will be a fun evening with a little bit of serious thrown in as we taste through these wines.
