D'ARENBERG In 1912, Joseph Osborn purchased Milton Vineyards in the hills just north of Gloucester and Bellevue, now known as McLaren Vale. Joseph's son, Frank Osborn, left medical school for life in the vineyard. Fruit from the 78 hectares of vineyards was sold to local wineries until his own cellars were complete in 1928. In 1943 Frank's son, Francis d'Arenberg, universally known as “d'Arry, returned from school, age 16, to help his ill father run the business, eventually assuming full management of d'Arenberg in 1957.

Enter the fourth generation, d'Arry's son, Chester d'Arenberg Osborn. After graduating from Roseworthy College and touring other Australian and European wine regions, Chester took over the reins as Chief Winemaker in 1984. d'Arenberg has received a host of awards and

accolades including 2009 Winery of the Year, Wine & Spirits Magazine (USA) and Best AllRound Winery, Houston International Wine Competition 2009, and listed as a 5 star and Best Winery in the 2013 edition of James Halliday's The Australian Wine Companion. Read More..

d'Arry bottled the first of the famous diagonal red stripe labelled wines two years later. d'Arenberg's wines of the 1960s gained immediate cult status amongst imbibers and judges. One Cabernet Sauvignon won a Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1969 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and another Grenache-based wine was awarded 7 trophies and 29 gold medals from Australian capital city wine shows.

GISSELBRECHT

The Gisselbrecht family have been producing wine in Alsace for over 300 hundred years. They originally sold their wines to negociants, until in 1936 Willy Gisselbrecht branched out as an independent winemaker/merchant, becoming one of the first to bottle his own wines.

Today the company he founded is operated from Dambach-la-Ville by his grandsons, Philippe and Claude, where the company owns 17 hectares of some of Alsace’s finest vineyard sites. The family also own significant parcels in the Grand Cru Frankstein, and buy fruit from the Grand Cru Muenchberg and from a select group of growers.

The brothers introduced a quality charter that rewards growers by paying above-market rates. In return, they insist that yields are kept lower than the authorised AC limit and that best vineyard management practises are maintained. In the winery, traditional methods acquired over generations are combined with modern, temperature-controlled technology to produce Gisselbrecht’s stunning range of offerings, a selection held in high regard around the globe. ZUCCARDI WITH JUAN PABLO YANEZ Zuccardi is one of the finest and most famous wineries in Argentina. Established in the high altitude region of Mendoza by Alberto Zuccardi in 1963, the winery is still family run today. They were just voted 'Worlds Best Vineyard' by an international academy of 500 wine aficionados and sommeliers. Zuccardi were one of the first to start seriously exporting in the early 1990s, and led the way in pricing. Over time and with much experimentation row by row, they have progressed further into single finca wines primarily from the Uco Valle. These have a real focus on the terroir, with less new oak, and early harvesting for more freshness. We are joined by their export Manager Juan Pablo Yanez, here in New Zealand for the first time to showcase this stunning range.

CHAMPAGNE | DAVID VS GOLIATH They say 'great things come in small packages'. As for Champagne, one can equally say that they also come in large packages, with some houses producing nearly 28 million bottles of deliciousness every year. In recent years, we have seen the rise of Grower Champagnes (the David if you will), producing unique styles reflective of a single village’s terroir. A style which largely contrasts the larger houses, who create blends from multiple cuvees across variable landscapes and with a bucket load more reserve wine to provide some extra depth. Join us and come try and pick out the David of four pairings, or simply be seduced by the charm and finesse that is champagne; Grower or not.

TAKAPUNA WINECLUB | BORDEAUX AND BURGUNDY 101 As perhaps the two most prestigious regions for wine making in the entire world, much has been written and said about the regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. With prices that are often even more extravagant than the bewildering array of names on the bottles it can be difficult to even know what we are looking at or paying for. This month at the Takapuna Wineclub we will take a deep dive into these regions, demystifying some

of the glamour and learning exactly what it's all about. To help us dive as deep as possible we will be tasting through some top examples from specific subregions to highlight the huge impact that different terroir and chateau can have. Covering the gamut of varieties and styles we will be tasting from Burgundy: Puligny Montrachet, Vosne Romanee, Beaune, and from Bordeaux: Pessac Leognan, Saint-Estephe, Pomerol and Sauternes. THE LEGENDARY GAJA SINGLE VINEYARDS The Gaja winery was founded in the Piemonte region of northern Italy in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, and it has been family owned and operated for four generations, in a constantly evolving arc of inspired winemaking. For the last 50 years, Angelo Gaja has been one of the most renowned producers in the world, having started a revolution in quality in both Barbaresco and Barolo. He has also been one of the most controversial personalities in the region, with his unconvential winemaking methods, defying of the appellation rules, alternative names for traditional vineyards, and plantings of international varieties. Tonight our Fine Wine Manager Regan McCaffery, will be presenting one of the finest lineups of GAJA ever shown in New Zealand. We will be focusing on his legendary single vineyard bottlings of Piedmonte, from the stunning 2013 vintage. With Angelo's daughters taking over the Estate there is a change in attitude, and we see this vintage designated as Barolo and Barbaresco for the first time in 20 years.

CHARLES HEIDSIECK With the recent release of Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Blanc, we thought it was an opportune moment to look at the whole range. Charles is synonymous with quality in the Champagne world and always has been since it's inception in the mid 1800's. It was Charles himself, fondly

renamed Champagne Charlie, that took Charles Heidsieck out to the world. He conquered America and became the darling of New York society. In a letter to his wife in 1860, he penned "there is a rumour about me an excitement as they say, that we will greatly benefit from". When he returned to Europe, he went on to charm both England and Belgium. The wine was always made with meticulous attention to detail and that continues to this day. It is known as "Typiquement Charles" and each Cellar Master declares having been inspired by the embodiment of Champagne Charlie.
