ITALY PIEMONTE PART 2
CA' DEL BAIO A The Ca’ del Baio vineyards are located in the villages of Treiso and Barbaresco, with both in the designated zone for Barbaresco production. Like it’s famous neighbour, Barolo, Barbaresco makes wine from the Nebbiolo grape. Established in 1870 by Giuseppe Grasso, Ca’ del Baio remains a family enterprise, now under the stewardship of Giuseppe’s great-grandson, Giulio. Among their range of Barolos is the prized cru of Asili. Ca’ del Baio manage their vineyards and winery sustainably, undertaking minimum intervention and using as little sulphur in the winery as possible, the wines vinified with natural yeasts. A-MANO Mark Shannon is a Californian who went to Apulia for a short holiday with Fruili native Elvezia Sbalchiero, nursing an affection for the Primitivo grape that rapidly turned into an obsession. Entranced by the region with its fresh, uncomplicated cuisine and timeless approach to living, the pair made it their home and established A-Mano to craft their handmade, affordable wines. ‘To make expensive wines is contrary to our way of thinking,’ says Elvezia. Theirs are superb
value, fruit forward wines made with much passion and flair. Within one year of its conception, A Mano had been named Red Wine of the Year at London’s International Wine Challenge. Read More..
RIVERA Founded in 1950 by Sebastiano de Corato, the estate is run by Sebastiano’s son Carlo, and his son, Sebastiano, and is positioned firmly on the world stage as a benchmark producer of Apulian wine. While the company’s range is extensive, it was the potential of the DOC Castel del Monte that attracted Sebastiano to the area, and it forms the basis of the wines Rivera make today. They own 85 hectares of vineyards planted in the varieties native to Apulia, along with international varieties like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Here, old traditions mingle with the modern, with the de Corato eyes fixed firmly on the future. Read more ....
NOVUM NEW TO OUR STORES
The vision-in-motion of William Hoare and Rachel Jackson-Hoare, Novum works on the premise that great wine comes from great fruit, and that one will generally find that fruit within a small pocket on a good vineyard. It is their mission in life to pinpoint those pockets and extract said fruit, then set about crafting their high-end wines, complete with the newly developed Amorim NDTech corks (no cork taint) and waxed caps, just to underline how seriously they’re taking this venture. For William and Rachel it’s all about low intervention and high expectations. Read more...
SPARKLING METHODE MARLBOROUGH
Methode Marlborough is a society that has set out to establish a gold-plated standard for the Marlborough sparkling wine industry, by identifying those wines made in the traditional way, to a set of criteria that meet the required quality level. For a wine to fit under the Methode Marlborough umbrella, the fruit must fall within the designated varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, and must have been sourced from the Marlborough region; the second fermentation is required to have been done in the bottle, with the wine riddled and disgorged. The minimum time on lees before disgorging is 18 months, as it is only after this point that the autolysis characters from time with the lees are developed, along with an appropriate finesse to the bead. If you’re searching for a top-quality New Zealand sparkling wine, this is where you’ll find it.

THE NAKED HOP | PARROTDOG ABOUTWINE
A true Kiwi inspiration story, Parrotdog brewed out of humble beginnings. Starting off as a couple of guys tinkering with a home brew kit in an Aro Valley flat are now recognized as a growing player in the New Zealand craft beer scene. Now based in Wellington’s Lyall Bay Parrotdog have a state-of-the-art custom-built facility. A hop-skip from the beach you can fill your growler from their takeaway and go sit in the sand. Or if it is too windy you can have a brew and a bite at their bar.
Parrotdog are known for their core range of five beer styles that are both delicious and well balanced. Their Flora series tests the limits of IPA as a variety. The more difficult beer to obtain is the RareBird series. These are oneoff beers named after native New Zealand birds. Their extinction or rarity make them the stuff of legends.
Available only from the brewery is their Lyall Bay series. Brewed on a pilot kit these beers exemplify a lot more creative license and experimentation. Parrotdog’s business model is built on successful crowd-funding and their annual shareholder offering. This is an opportunity to raise capital to develop and grow the business. It also allows ordinary punters to invest in the success, and story. Parrotdog regularly give back to their community. They often donate beer to art exhibitions, school fundraisers and other community events. Nice. Read more...
