EMILIANA ENTHUSIASTICALLY ETHICAL
Founded by Chile’s Guilisasti family, the inspirational Emiliana Organic Vineyards are located in Chile’s Casablanca Valley, and own vineyards in some of Chile’s best winemaking areas. Their organic and biodynamic way of winemaking started out as a trial. When they saw the resulting difference in their wines, not to mention in their people, they started moving more and more vineyards over. For the team at Emiliana, this is a comprehensive, interlocking system that involves the creation of balanced vineyard ecosystems within which a host of animals, birds, insects and plants play a part in the maintenance of vineyard balance, acting as natural pesticides, weed killers and compost producers. Emiliana staff are guaranteed a fair wage, the workers offered technical scholarships and provided with land to grow their own organically cultivated fruit and vegetables. The wines themselves are very accomplished: expressive, fragrant, clean and cooler in style, owing to the proximity of the sea. Read more ....

SPARKLING CHARMAT
The Charmat method of making sparkling wine involves mixing the wine with yeast – and with sugar if needed – and transferring it to a sealed, temperature-controlled pressure tank where a second fermentation occurs. When the second fermentation has been completed, the yeast lees are filtered and the wine, kept under pressure, is then bottled. The process is ideal for creating and preserving the fresh aromatic characters of Italy’s classic Prosecco styles. Read More..

SPARKLING METHODE TRADITIONNELLE
Sparkling wines can be produced in a number of ways, but the most admired are the classic mĂŠthode traditionnelle wines, using the system developed in Champagne. Following an initial fermentation, blended still wines are transferred to bottle with a selected yeast solution and sealed. This initiates a second fermentation in the bottle, creating alcohol and carbon dioxide bubbles that dissolve in the wine. Time spent on lees leads to greater complexity in the wine. Costly, labourintensive, the time-honoured mĂŠthode traditionnelle system is the favoured process of sparkling winemakers the world over. Read More..

NEW ZEALAND WINE OF THE YEAR ABOUTWINE
Yet another wine show? Well no, but yes. The New Zealand Wine of the Year Awards is the official national wine competition of the New Zealand wine industry, run by New Zealand Wine Growers.
6
Now, if you are sitting there thinking ‘how is it I’ve not heard of this before?’, that is because the name and the format is new for 2018. New Zealand Wine Growers have for many years run two wine competitions, the larger of the two being the Wine Awards sponsored by Air New Zealand (you’ll know them as the Air New Zealand Wine Awards) and the smaller being the Bragato Wine Awards. The Bragato Show a competition that championed the grower and single vineyard wines.
Judging for the awards was in early October, with the Gold Medal Winners due to be announced on the 17th October. I certainly can’t wait to see the results. There were a massive number of entries, just over 1300, with Pinot Noir the leading variety. The competition was chaired by Warren Gibson, with Ben Glover as Deputy Chair. Two international judges joined the judging, PJ Charteris from Australia and Jamie Goode from the UK. I was lucky enough to join the judging team this year These two shows have been merged together
