GISBORNE GOLD | MATAWHERO
Matawhero, Gisborne’s legendary winery story, began in 1968 when it was established by Bill Irwin and his son Denis, visionaries who did much to enhance New Zealand’s winemaking credentials. When, in 2008, Denis decided to sell Matawhero, local winegrowers Richard and Kirsten Searle grabbed the opportunity and purchased the iconic winery. Since then the vineyard has been replanted with new clones and varieties. The Searles have revitalised the operation. The home vineyard has been replanted with new clones, along with a number of exciting new varieties, and the production facilities were upgraded. Kirsten Searle puts it thus: ‘Like the Irwins, who passed on a heritage of innovation, we strive to produce individual wines that are shining examples of their Gisborne terroir.’ Read More..

NEW ZEALAND ROSE
Our roses are the most confusing of all; being the innovative, pushing-the-boundaries types we are, Kiwi winemakers tend to dabble in a wide variety of styles. Hence, a little experimentation is going to be your best option when buying local. Do note, though, that colour does not necessarily equate with style. In terms of New Zealand production, anything goes, and you can make your rose using whatever method appeals. Read More..

SPANISH ROSE
In Spain, they call it rosado. The colour tends to be a deeper, more vivid red than that of the Provence styles, courtesy of the dark, thickskinned Tempranillo’s inclusion in the blend, and thanks to extended skin contact with the red grapes. Lees contact in stainless is usual, with some aging in oak as well. As a rule, Spanish rosado is bright-fruited, spicy, fullbodied and dry. Read More..

MATEUS
Since its return to our shelves in sleek new livery, customers have been waxing lyrical about the last time they drank Mateus Rose. Its origins date back to 1942, when Fernando Guedes set out to put Portugal on the vinous map from his small family winery, Sogrape Vinhos, which rose by the end of the eighties to become the largest wine producer in Portugal.
The centrepiece of his agenda was the ubiquitous Mateus, the first wine to attain true global notoriety, and today boasting a presence in more than 125 countries. Salvador Guedes, grandson of Fernando, explains: ‘Our challenge is to sustain the Mateus as we pass it from generation to generation, and that’s why every so often we make subtle changes to the bottle.’ Regardless of outer appearances, the unique essence of this iconic wine remains unchanged. A TASTE OF ITALY | THE WALL SAYS IT ALL
Shakespeare’s rather intense play involving an intergenerational feud and teenage death has spawned an astonishing piece of real estate in Verona. In a house claiming to be the Capulets’, Juliet’s balcony, or more accurately, the walls of the courtyard beneath it play host to the ardent emotions of legions of lovelorn youngsters (many of them tourists) channelling their inner Romeo & Juliet and inscribing their steadfast loyalty to one another. Pasqua, being Italian, couldn’t help themselves and have created these no doubt tear-stained tributes to the unstoppable force that is Young Love. Read More..
