LEOUBE PROVENCE'S ROSE ROYALTY HAS MUCH TO OFFER
Nestled on the edge of the Mediterranean, Chateau Leoube is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, surrounded by bush, away from the hustle-and-bustle that the tourists flock to. It’s the true south, awash with sunshine, fresh tomatoes, olives, herbs and superb wines. It is the sensational pale-hued roses that the area is known for, and Leoube sit astride the genre with an impressive range of pink expressions, augmented with a selection of excellent reds, whites and sparkling wines. Following a back-to-basics philosophy, Romain believes in strengthening the land’s biodiversity and natural defences by employing traditional growing methods and using only natural, nontoxic treatments. Leoube’s premise is that if you respect the balance of the plant then you will get optimally balanced fruit in return, and the flourishing success of their vines and olive trees stand as testimony to this approach. The Chateau Leoube wines are certified organic, with biodynamic principles applied, but without certification. The Leoube estate was purchased by its current English owners in 1997. Seduced by the beauty and history of the property, they were fortunate enough to entice their neighbour’s son, Romain

Ott, to be their winemaker. Domaine Ott has, over the years, been widely acclaimed as one of the very best in Provence. Romain Ott has a unique knowledge of the local terroir, and is responsible for establishing the change that has seen Leoube move to sit among the very best of the region.
42 BELOW UP THEIR SUSTAINABILITY GAME IN 2020
The 42Below story starts back in 1999, when Y2K was a thing and New Year’s Eve was a new Millennium. Founder Geoff Ross distilled a thought: New Zealand, the land of purity, needs an equally pure Vodka. So, setting up a base in Wellington (naturally, his garage), Geoff started producing vodka, initially selling to his friends and local bars, and eventually expanding across New Zealand. With success comes ambition, bucketloads of marketing and international competitions. Having achieved great success with the latter, this humble vodka can now be found across the globe, firmly embedded as a European favourite.
Fast forward 20 years, and things have changed somewhat. Global reliance on single-use plastics, ill-equipped recycling and refuse infrastructure and population growth driving intensification in our primary industries has starting to take its toll on vodka’s key ingredient, water. Like many Kiwis today, 42Below have taken steps to protect their ‘super pure’ brand through improvements in sustainability.
Examples of such initiatives include hosting the Cocktail Earth Cup challenging bartenders to design eco-friendly, zero-waste drinks, and reusing cocktail lemons to make Eco Soap that is then sent back into the bars. Now 42below can add 100% recyclable and sustainable packaging to their ‘eco-lades’, saying good bye to painted logos and plastic caps, and hello to paper labels and metal lids. Smart and smartlooking, it goes to show one doesn’t need to be an eco-warrior to make an eco-difference. Read More..
ZEPHYR MARLBOROUGH & THE GLOVER FAMILY
The story of Zephyr is intrinsically linked with Marlborough. Owen and Wendy Glover converted their farm in Dillons Point into a vineyard in 1985 and the family have had a significant impact on our premier wine district. Owen has been involved with the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival, Chair of Wine Marlborough, Highfield Viticulturist and a longstanding grower. Wendy is the driving force behind the family, takes and despatches orders and was on the Marlborough committee of Pinot Noir 2013. Son Jack manages Accolade New Zealand, but still has time as a part owner to discuss family wine affairs with brother Ben.
Ben Glover’s other business, The Coterie, is on the old Seresin Winery site and is a winemaking collective nurturing thinking around organic winefarming. Ben’s Marlborough credentials are extensive, having been chief Winemaker for Wither Hills, Corbans, Lindauer, Daniel Le Brun and Mud House, and assisting in the development of Konrad, Auntsfield and The Ned. He is a past Chair of Pinot Noir 2017, and is Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Wine Of The Year and the Chief Cuisine Wine Judge. He manages, as well, the Glover family wine business. Does he have time for sleep? We don’t know.
Launched in 2007, the Zephyr wine brand initially focused on the aromatics Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, but the organically- certified producer now has in its range Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, all of them single vineyard wines. Read More..
PANHEAD
Fast cars, roaring motorcycles, burning rubber, a vision of bringing not just NZ, but the world fantastic, award-winning craft beer. In 2013, Mike Neilson put his vision into motion, setting up Panhead Custom Ales in a former Dunlop Tyres factory in Wellington’s Hutt Valley.
Not anticipated in this high octane adventure was that Panhead would be in part leading the charge for our craft beer on the international circuit. Partnering up with Lion allowed Panhead to focus on radical recipes and kitted out brewing with none of the paper pushing.
Panhead’s start line focused on four beers boasting exceptional quality and consistency: the crisp, sleek Port Road Pilsner; the deceptively hoppy QuickChange Extra Pale Ale; the roaring Supercharger all- American Pale Ale; the silky death metal monster, Blacktop Oat Stout.
It was not long, however, before our hop cravings for more kicked in and Panhead were releasing new hop-fisted brews: you should try the hottest hazy IPA in town, the Rat Rod, or allow the Sucky Monmon, a Japanese-styled lager, to drift across your tongue, smooth as an AE86 on the Mount Akina downhill. So step on the gas and get yourself a Panhead customized to smash your thirst.
