Manager extraordinaire of Wellington’s Glengarry Thorndon, Philip Rowe has spent his entire career in wine retail, and taking in the smile on his dial, we’re thinking he’s still loving it. Fresh out of school, he start working for the capital’s iconic O’Reilly’s Wines & Spirits, in the very same store that he inhabits today (life has a way of doing that). This was followed by a stint managing Tasman Liquor Retail, where, Phil is quick to point out, he employed one of the superstars of (sister company) Hancocks’ management team. The Australian wine scene was next up, working for Farmer Brothers. One of their brands was Italy’s Illuminati. Dino Illuminati’s delight was evident last year when he met Phil again – he had encountered a long lost friend.

After ten years in Australia, New Zealand was calling and Phil moved the family back home. After a short stint in Auckland working for Glengarry, the winds of Wellington beckoned and he moved south (‘No offence to you Aucklanders; it’s just not my city.’). Back in his home town, Phil worked for Liquor King, until Glengarry purchased O’Reilly’s and that talented soul Phil had recruited back at Tasman enticed him to come and assist with the task of introducing Glengarry to Wellington. When it comes to wine, Phil has an impressive depth of knowledge; there’s not a lot that he doesn’t know about. Or at least have an opinion on. His favourite, though, has to be Bordeaux; it’s an aged claret any day of the week for this man. When he’s not at work (which is not all that often), you’ll find him toiling in his garden. This year’s success story? The tomatoes are going off.

RICHARD AND KIRSTEN SEARLE AND FAMILY
Wine has been produced here since the 1840s, but New Zealand’s emergence as an internationally recognised producer dates from the 1960s. One of our trailblazers was the late Bill Irwin, who originally established the Matawhero vineyards back in 1968. Bill was just one of a handful of commercial growers in Gisborne, but it was what he was planting that set him apart and ultimately changed the face of Kiwi winemaking. In the mid-1970s Bill’s son Denis launched the Matawhero label, which rapidly attracted both national and international attention for its Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer. Success followed success, and even Buckingham Palace was stocking up. Denis produced his last vintage in 1999 and retired soon after. In 2008, Richard and Kirsten Searle, owners of the Brunton Road winery, purchased Matawhero and initiated a replanting programme using new varieties and clones. Richard Searle: ‘Our aim has been to continue the Irwins’ philosophy of producing groundbreaking, adventurous, individual wines that display a true sense of place.’ The Searles have not only revitalised an iconic wine label, they are well on the way to positioning themselves as a significant force in New Zealand’s winemaking pantheon.

The Church House is vibrantly floral, touched with spice and delightfully food-friendly, with an aromatic bouquet and a beautifully poised palate of citrus, apple and orange blossom. There is a hint of sweetness that dries out nicely as it arrives at the lingering, nicely rounded finish.

With fruit off the legendary Briant Vineyard this was always going to be a worthy offering. Parading its pale straw hues, Matawhero’s Pinot Gris shows varietal vitality, with some residual sugars providing additional fullness and balance. On the fragrant and exotic nose floral and pear notes vie for ascendency while hints of marzipan look on from the edges. Ripe. Sensual. Spicy.

Late in January, over 500 delegates from all corners of the globe descended on our favourite party city, Wellington, to take part in this year’s celebration of what is possibly the most ethereal and elusive grape, the mighty Pinot Noir, carrying with them the catch cry, ‘New Depths, New Characters, New Zealand.’ This, then, was the fifth NZ Pinot Celebration, an event that has been steadily growing in stature and is now firmly cemented into the international wine calendar. Over four days, delegates tasted their way through hundreds of Pinots from our various wine regions, discussed topical issues and debated each region’s merits and direction at length. Retail partner for the event, Glengarry sent a team to join in the festivities and report back on what they encountered. The New Zealand Pinots that we have selected here represent some of the high-points. You can check out our findings in more depth on our new blog site www.aboutwine.co.nz On the final day, there was an impressive tasting of 2010 Burgundies. When reviewing your progress, it never hurts to check back in on the Old World (it is, after all, Pinot Noir’s ancestral home). Within the next few pages you’ll find a selection of our 2010 Burgundies, including some of the producers that featured in Wellington. Our Burgundy 2010 Fine Wine Offer is now available; you can peruse it in full on our website at www.glengarry.co.nz/burgundy2010

An enticing bouquet of raspberry and cherry rubs up against spicy nuances, while the sensuous mouthfeel is enhanced by ripe fruit and velvet textures.

An expressive nose and deeply fruited palate flaunt vibrant notes of red cherry and mocha, with lithe tannins leading to a lengthy finish. case of 12 $36.49 a bottle Over the years a quiet achiever, Peregrine jumped centre stage with their 2009 Pinot Noir, which won three trophies and was named Champion Wine of the Show at the Air NZ Wine Awards. The result has been scarcity of subsequent vintages, and lately this has been as hard to get hold of as a jar of Marmite. Powerful, concentrated, but underpinned with a silky femininity, the exquisite fruit, with its charred cherry nuances, is a rich and opulent delight.

In recent years, the region has transformed itself considerably, and one of the most noticeable take-homes from the event in Wellington was the distinction between the Martinborough Terrace wines and those out of Te Muna. This is not in itself surprising when you consider the variation in soil types, with Martinborough Terrace an old river bed and Te Muna in possession of a lot more alluvial soil. As a general rule you’ll find the wines from Te Muna broader, more brooding, while those from the Terrace favour the ethereal and the textural, exhibiting earthy, savoury characters.
nelson Another of our pioneering regions, there has been great Pinot Noir coming out of Nelson for many years. Sitting at only 4 percent of the country’s output, though, we don’t tend to see a lot of it around. Being sunny Nelson, this is the warmest Pinot producing area in NZ. While quite a small region, there are two distinct styles that seem to come from here, via the wines grown on the plains versus those from the hills.
Marlborough While it’s undeniable that Sauvignon Blanc reigns supreme in our most famous wine region, an impressive 50% of the total Pinot Noir grown in New Zealand comes from Marlborough. Boasting a maritime climate, Marlborough is made up of a variety of valleys and now spans quite a distance. Lately, a large part of the Pinot grown in Marlborough has been produced from fruit grown off the hillsides up the back of the valleys, where the variety seems to flourish. Often overlooked due to its size, there is some amazing Pinot Noir coming out of Marlborough, and it is definitely one to watch.
NORTH CANTERBURY / WAIPARA Slightly bigger than Nelson but smaller than Martinborough in the Pinot game, this area accounts for 7 percent of production. There are two main parts: Waipara, where the majority of the region’s Pinot is produced, and north Canterbury, which currently consists of two vineyards and a bucketload of potential. The soil throughout is a combination of gravel, limestone and clay, with the northern vineyards having a higher percentage of limestone. Waipara can produce wonderful, fruit-driven, round-edged styles that make delicious early drinking and often exceed expectations with their quality-price ratio.
CENTRAL OTAGO You’d think, with all the noise coming from Central Otago, that more of the production was from here (it’s probably the loud shirts and big personalities we’re hearing). When you include Waitaki, 29% of our Pinot Noir production comes out of Central. With the extremes in weather, Pinot likes living here, revelling in the freedraining soil and difficult terrain. Driving through the region, it’s not hard to note the variation, from Gibbston, through the Cromwell Basin, out to Bendigo and on to Waitaki. The wines from the above-named sub-regions are starting to show real character and definition, with these tendencies on an upward trajectory as the vine age increases. There are, as well, a number of producers going down the blending route, believing the whole is better than the parts; and it’s working for many of them. With such a youthful winegrowing region, there’s really no right or wrong. Yet.

BURGUNDY
A SNAPSHOT OF 2010
Ask the globe’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers where they draw their inspiration from, and many will tell you, ‘Burgundy.’ Upon the aptly-named ‘golden slopes,’ the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, Burgundy’s greatest wines are produced. Burgundy is the narrowest and longest wine region in France, but one of the smallest, most fragmented and difficult to understand. With more than 1,000 producers and over 100 appellations it’s easy to see why. Inheritance laws have seen the vineyards divided into ever smaller family parcels, and within a sea of small producers, it is not uncommon for a single vineyard to have numerous owners. When it comes to the grapes in Burgundy, things get a little simpler. There are three main varieties grown; Pinot Noir for red wine, Chardonnay for white and Gamay for Beaujolais. There are various levels of quality in Burgundy. At the very top sits Grand Cru. Next on the excellence ladder is Premier Cru, followed by wine from a specific village, and then the generic Burgundian appellations. Hundreds of growers accessing tiny plots of land in a place where terroir is the best predictor of quality means knowing your vineyard and knowing your producer will stand you in good stead. Then, it’s just a matter of knowing your wine. With that, we can help. It is also important to ensure the provenance of the wines. We religiously ship all of our stock in refrigerated containers; in fact, in recent shipments we’ve even added temperature gauges to monitor the proceedings, and have printed the results in our Burgundy offer. Complete peace of mind, then, for all.

Tasting through the 2010 wines with our suppliers, it was clear that many of them loved the vintage, often preferring it to the much-hyped 2009 vintage. There is much to like with the 2010s, the forward fruit pinned together with structured tannins and a taut, acidic backbone. The red wines from this vintage are going to be excellent mid- to long-term options for cellaring; with excellent structure and complexity, they will undoubtedly benefit from aging. The whites, though, are the quiet achievers, with the best being snapped up as we speak.

Inspired by the Kiwi can-do attitude, Dane Soren Eriksen quit his biochemistry research position at the University of Auckland to establish his own craft brewery. In 2005, the nomadic Soren was living in Perth and frequently visited the Little Creatures Brew Pub, where he became convinced there was a bit more to beer than the usual ubiquitous suspects. Xmas 2008 brought the gift of a home brewing kit from wife Monique. That, and a trip through the United States checking out brew pubs, proved to be the catalyst that hooked Soren into become serious about craft brewing. New to New Zealand , these are wines for Riesling aficionados. You’d have to be a tad obsessed to base yo ur entire venture on a variet y that normally flies somewhat unde r the rad ar, and yes, John Hughs – the man be hind the brand – is indeed a self-confes Riesling freak. A collec sed tion of wines from dif ferent regions and in dif ferent styles, the No 3 is a dry style from Cla re Valley, while No 4 comes from from Eden Valley. Strictly on allo cat ion, we’ve managed to secure a small parce l of these lovelies.

CHÂTEAU ROC BORDEAUX 2010
Currently working the 13th generation of the family business, SéguinotBordet have been producing wine in the commune of Maligny since the 18th century, with records showing the family’s roots in Chablis stretching back as far as 1590. With that much tradition to keep track of they could be accused of falling asleep at the wheel, but in fact the current steerer, the brilliant Jean-François Bordet, has forged a wonderful union between the old and the new and taken his family house to another level.

case of 12 $18.49 a bottle At this price it’s a steal, a Merlot, Cab Sauvignon, Cab Franc blend that is deliciously approachable. Ripe berry and cassis aromas are enhanced by spice and cedar, with the fruit complemented by easy tannins and a savoury finish. Great food wine.
Jean-François has installed a brand new winery in Maligny and established a strict viticultural regime in the vineyards, with cropping levels reduced and the Chardonnay harvested later. With the exception of the Grand cru, all the wines are cool fermented and matured on lees in stainless steel to achieve fresh, clean fruit underscored by the minerality that characterises the classic Chablis style.
CHÂTEAU BRIOT BORDEAUX 2009
A good portion of S-B’s wines are sourced from their own 16-hectare Maligny vineyard and from growers in the Chablis and Petit Chablis appellations, but their signature Chablis comes off the Premier cru vineyard Fourchaume, which they part own. With demand for their product at an all-time high, Séguinot-Bordet have had to start allocating their elegantly expressive, benchmark wines.

The Bourillon wines abound with signs of elegance and finesse. Exclusively Chenin Blanc, this is a great alternative to Chardonnay, the honeyed palate weighty, with nuances of chalk and lime and a mouth-tingling texture, all signed off with a stunningly long finish.
40477
case of 12 $27.49 a bottle In the pursuit of excellence, Séguinot-Bordet produce just 10,000 cases of wine per vintage, which is small even by Burgundian standards. The Chardonnay fruit for each of the domaine’s cuvées is stringently selected to reflect its terroir, with the fruit for this expression coming off vines with an average age of twenty-five years. Rich and elegant, with notes of honeyed flowers and spice, creamy textures and a fresh mineral finish.

TAYLORS
TAYLORS clare valley innovators
This iconic and much lauded Australian winery is the brainchild of the Taylor family, who had long been convinced that the Clare Valley had massive potential with its unique combination of geography, geology and climate. The Clare is a warm region that, through its altitude, experiences cooler conditions, delivering ripe, intensely flavoured fruit. In 1969 the Taylors took the plunge and purchased their first 300-hectare property. The Taylor Family are regarded by their peers as pioneers – for their development of the Clare Valley region, their part in screwcap initiatives and for their environmental focus via the Eighty Acres range, the world’s first 100% carbon neutral wines. Today the family oversees 750 hectares of vineyard, and with a medal haul exceeding three-and-a-half thousand, their various ranges (Promised Land, Eighty Acres, Taylors Estate, Jaraman and the ultrapremium St Andrews) are renowned for their quality and consistency.
