Our (almost) new Kingsland store is approaching its first birthday, and it’s time for a new face at the helm. For you regulars out there thinking, ‘what’s up with our Danielle?’ do not despair; Danielle has merely hopped the railway lines to head up our Newmarket Store. In charge at Kingsland from this month you’ll find Will McIntosh. When Will started with us two years ago, he applied for a job as a Barista at our Herne Bay Dida’s Food Store. It’s only now that he admits that it was just a ploy to get a foot in the door at Glengarry. What drew him to us? ‘It’s the family company, the size of the business and the focus,’ he says. Will grew up in Gisborne surrounded by the Wine industry, and had always had an interest in it. After college Will headed for bigger pastures to study for a Bachelor of Science, specialising in Forensics. Towards the end of that degree, he fortuitously met Richard Gardener, a professor in the Biology Department that was, at the time, enjoying a government grant to study yeast genetics, with a particular focus on New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Will freely admits that the fact the government had dropped $4 million into the project did grab his attention somewhat. Drawn to Richard’s discourse, Will changed horses and finished his degree in Oenology, loving every minute of it. Will has enjoyed working for Glengarry, and in particular, learning all about the international wines we import. Ready for his next challenge, Will has been promoted to manager and is heading to Kingsland. He’s excited about the change, looking forward to learning all about craft beer and ready to meet his new community.

PEREGRINE WINEMAKER NADINE CROSS
With auspicious beginnings, Peregrine’s inaugural 1998 Sauvignon Blanc won the Champion Trophy at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards. Since then the winery has continued its winning ways, amassing a hoard of domestic and international goodies for the trophy cabinet. The ultimate goal of owners Lindsay McLachlan and Greg Hay has been to produce hallmark Central Otago wines off their own organically certified vineyards, augmented with fruit from selected growers.

Harvested in prime condition from the Cromwell Basin, Peregrine’s PG was cool fermented and lees-aged in stainless steel to retain freshness and textural complexity. Stonefruit and pear aromas are edged with mineral notes, while the off-dry palate explodes with tropical flavours tarted up with grapefruit and quietened slightly by firm acid. Appealingly sensuous.
With their eye locked firmly on sustainability, Peregrine are major sponsors of the Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust, an organisation dedicated to preserving endangered species, including New Zealand’s native falcon, the Karearea.

Though they refer to themselves as the House of Pinot Noir, the sparkling wines of Quartz Reef are among New Zealand’s very best. Austrian émigré Rudi Bauer has made himself right at home in the Bendigo sub-region of Central Otago since arriving back in 1985. Something of a pragmatist, Rudi’s sparkling project was a way of having a Plan B to fall back on if the Pinot didn’t fly. Fortunately for Rudi, they both worked, with the Quartz Reef Pinot Noir currently benchmark Bendigo and their méthodes featuring in any list of the New World’s top sparkling wines.

PAUL MAS SOUTH OF FRANCE
WAS $21.90 NOW DIDIER DAGUENEAU
DAGUENEAU POST-PR ANDIAL GENIUS The Sauvignon Blanc wines of the Loire’s risk-taking perfectionist Didier Dagueneau are legendary. Meeting an untimely end in a plane crash in 2008, his legacy has been kept alive by his family, and to this day Dagueneau’s Silex is hailed as the pinnacle of Sauvignon production. In 2002, Didier teamed up with his friend Guy Pautrat to produce benchmark dessert wines in the Jurançon region, located at the foot of the Pyrénées and home to some of the world’s great sweet wines. As with their Sauvignons, the Dagueneau approach to the enterprise involves exacting and uncompromising dedication.

The estate’s spectacular ampitheatre of terraced vineyards was the inspiration for the name of the wine. Here, the balance between sweetness and acidity is of paramount importance and is key to the region’s distinctive style, with the botrytised fruit picked as late as November. The variety is Petit Manseng, which thrives on the steep mountainous slopes. The wine itself is rich, full bodied, its sweet, viscous tendencies beautifully countered by a streak of natural acidity that is quite remarkable. An epic wine worthy of a great cellar.

Kevin Mitchell’s whole life has revolved around wine production; he was born and raised in the Clare Valley, playing and working in the vineyard with his father Mort. The Kilikanoon property Kevin purchased in 1997 included mature vines planted in the 1960s by Mort.
CASE OF 6 $13.49 A BOTTLE
Today Kilikanoon and its partners own or control over 2000 hectares of prime vineyards throughout South Australia. Kevin’s vision is to craft terroir-styled wines from low-yield, mature vineyards; which translates as careful maturation, with no fining, clarification or filtration.
COOKOOTHAMA
Since its initial releases, the winery has won countless awards. This includes the rather astounding feat of taking six of the seven trophies on offer at the 2002 Clare Valley Wine Show. In 2005, the astute Robert Parker described Kilikanoon thus: ‘This is one of the most brilliantly run wineries in Australia, and the quality of the entire portfolio is impressive thanks to the enviable talents of winemaker Kevin Mitchell.’
